When Inspector Vivaldi leaves the optician shop where Ida works, and learns that Zoran is missing, he walks by a bronze statue seen in close-up. The statue is that of the famous Irish writer James Joyce, at Via Roma 16. Joyce lived in Trieste on an off between 1904 and 1915, teaching English at the Berlitz School. The statue is the work of the Trieste-born sculptor Nino Spagnoli, and was placed on the bridge in 2004 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Joyce's arrival in Trieste.
