Famed for his portrayal of FBI agent Fox Mulder, David Duchovny has branched off into quite a few successful stints as an actor, writer, musician, and producer. In his latest tryst with fate, the X-Files actor kick-started his podcast Fail Better. In a reflection of his trials and missteps, his latest venture goes as far as to invite esteemed guests and talk about failures. The unconventional approach, however, has a deeper meaning, especially to him, on a personal basis.

To answer the burning question as to why he switched his tracks from being a popular actor to now hosting a talk show of sorts, the 63-year-old opened up on the same. Additionally, he also dished out why he would invite some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry and have them walk him through their defeats and constraints, in front of a global audience.

Maggie Gyllenhaal has added another cast member to her upcoming take on The Bride of Frankenstein, and it's someone she knows very well.
In a new piece on the Spider-Man: Far From Home and Roadhouse star, THR reports that Jake Gyllenhaal has joined the cast of The Bride!, but don't reveal any details on his character.
Gyllenhaal (Maggie) recently took to Instagram to share the first ever production stills from the film, giving us a glimpse of Christian Bale as Frankenstein's Monster, and Jessie Buckley as the misunderstood creature's titular Bride.
We first heard about this project back in 2022 when it was being developed for Netflix, but a follow-up report indicated that the film had been shelved shortly after the Hollywood strikes got underway, and was being shopped elsewhere. More recently, we'd learn that Warner Bros. had acquired The Bride!, which is now set for a theatrical release on October 3rd,...

There's been chatter online for a while that James Gunn's Superman might include Steve Lombard. While it's still not confirmed, a new behind-the-scenes photo of the movie's cast has sent speculation into overdrive.
As you'll see below, Saturday Night Live alum Beck Bennett was spotted alongside the cast and crew, leaving many fans convinced he's playing the Daily Planet's cocky sports columnist.
He may have just been visiting friends, of course, but the facial hair does feel like a dead giveaway!
In the comics, Lombard - created by Cary Bates and Curt Swan in 1973's Superman #264 - is a sports reporter and later sports anchor for the Daily Planet, the same newspaper where Clark Kent and Lois Lane work.
Known for his brash and often arrogant personality, Steve is depicted as a former professional football player who brings his jock mentality to the newsroom. He is notorious for playing practical jokes on his colleagues,...

While Ben Stiller has seemingly shifted into filmmaking full-time, he directed most of the hit sci-fi psychological thriller series, “Severance,” for Apple TV+; he’s obviously known for a celebrated comedy career. Directing and starring in hit comedies like “Zoolander,” “Tropic Thunder” and “The Cable Guy” (though only a tiny part in the latter), the comedian has reflected on the failure of “Zoolander 2” in a new interview with Fail Better podcast.

"Zoolander 2" didn't have the best debut back in 2016. The sequel to Ben Stiller's 2001 comedy classic made just $55 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. Considering movies generally need to double their budget in order for the studio to start seeing a return on investment, that isn't all that great. Such a poor box office showing was made worse by the critical response, with the film currently sitting at a dismal 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. Indeed, /Film's review criticized "Zoolander 2" for being as stupid and out of touch as Derek Zoolander himself.
There was no reason why "Zoolander 2" needed to be as bad as it was, though. The sequel reassembled the stars of the original, with Stiller joined by Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell. Like its predecessor, the film also featured multiple celebrity cameos, including one particularly distasteful turn from Benedict Cumberbatch as a non-binary character. Okay, maybe there...

Ben Stiller still can’t get over just how much “Zoolander 2” flopped.
Despite the writer/actor/director previously crediting the critically-panned sequel for jumpstarting his dramatic directing career with “Escape From Dannemora” and “Severance,” Stiller revisited the box office bomb during David Duchovny’s “Fail Better” podcast (via People).
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said of the 2016 sequel to his 2001 classic comedy. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really fucked this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.'”
Stiller even questioned his own comedic take given the reception to the feature.
“It really freaked me out because I was like, ‘I didn’t know was that bad?’” Stiller said. “What scared me the most on that one was l’m losing what I think what’s funny, the questioning yourself … on ‘Zoolander 2,’ it was definitely blindsiding to me.

It is quite a common occurrence that if a comedian is extremely funny, they have probably dabbled in writing, creating, and directing at some point. While a lot of them see great success through this, there are the rare few who fail miserably and never look that way again. Unfortunately for Ben Stiller, his case was the latter.

The film was a hit and became a cult classic in the best of ways. This is why, when the decision to make a second film was announced, fans were excited. However, when Zoolander 2 hit theaters, the reaction was concerningly negative.

If so far you never knew that Ben Stiller, apart from being a great comedy actor, is also quite a prominent director — this news is for you.
The recent rumors have it that Stiller will be back to the director’s chair of a feature film after a break of almost ten years — his most recent movie, 2015’s Zoolander 2, was probably his biggest disaster so far.
Now that the filmmaker is ready to make his way back to movies afresh, his next feature seems to be much more brutal than anything before — and it might star Jeremy Allen White.
According to The InSneider’s reports, Stiller is having the first preparations for his collaborative work with Amazon on a presumably criminal drama called The Seven Five while Allen is currently in early talks to get the leading role.
Right now no details about the upcoming project have been revealed,...

Ben Stiller’s Zoolander is an infinitely quotable cult classic among comedy aficionadoes, and a sequel should have been easier to pull off than turning left. Still, the film failed epically, creating a reckoning for Stiller. Speaking with David Duchovny on the actor’s Fail Better podcast, Stiller says he was “blindsided” by the box office bombing of Zoolander 2 after thinking it would surprise fans more than David Bowie’s cameo in the original film.
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said about the sequel to his 2001 meme-worthy comedy. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really f—ed this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.”

Ben Stiller has opened up about the film which turned him onto TV: the controversial comedy Zoolander 2. More below…
With a career packed with some of the most beloved comedies of the 2000s (including the original Zoolander in 2001), it’s safe to say that Zoolander 2 doesn’t find itself gracing many Ben Stiller “best of” lists.
As it turns out, the critical and commercial flop of the modelling industry follow-up came as a bit of a shock for Stiller, as the actor-director reportedly told David Duchovny on an upcoming podcast (per People).
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really fucked this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.'”
Critics and audiences alike rejected the 2016 sequel, which debuted to pretty sniffy reviews and grossed just $56.7m off a $50-55m budget.

Ben Stiller has said in the past that “Zoolander 2” flopping at the box office was “not a great experience,” but he now admitted on an upcoming episode of David Duchovny’s “Fail Better” podcast (via People) that he was blindsided by the disastrous results that met his 2016 sequel. An intriguing creative duo are in line to collaborate on The Seven Five, a crime drama that could mark Ben Stiller’s return to film directing.
According to Jeff Sneider (via World Of Reel), Ben Stiller has signed up to helm The Seven Five, a crime drama that will be ‘set in the 1980s in New York City. The story’s about a corrupt police precinct and its ringleader, Michael Dowd, who was arrested in 1987 with a handful of other dirty cops who stole money and drugs. He served 14 years in prison, and his arrest exposed widespread corruption within the NYPD.’
It sounds intriguing, right? Add to this the talents of The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White in the lead role and you could have something special. Allen White was exceptional in last year’s The Iron Claw and his work in TV’s The Bear is no less remarkable.

This article contains casting spoilers for all eight episodes of Fallout.
The Fallout gaming franchise presents a big storytelling universe to play in. And that’s exactly what drew showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner to the Prime Video TV adaptation in the first place.
“It’s more creatively interesting to be able to build our own story in the world that they’ve carved out for us,” Wagner told Den of Geek. “That’s historically been the trajectory of Fallout. It’s traded hands many times, with different creative teams taking it over. It’s kept it fresh, kept it relevant. We chose to just vainly look at this as our Fallout.”
Of course, a big storytelling universe also requires a big cast to fill it up. Prime Video’s Fallout isn’t wanting for compelling lead characters thanks to Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and The Ghoul...

"Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" usually tops lists of the best Will Ferrell movies, but for many, the silly, raucous classic that is "Step Brothers" is simply unbeatable. The tale of 40-year-old man-children Brennan Huff (Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) struggling to get along after their parents marry and move in together solidified its two stars as the perfect pairing. Ferrell and Reilly had worked together on "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" but it was 2008's "Step Brothers" that truly tapped into their shared talent for sheer buffoonery.
There are other movies like "Step Brothers" but none quite manage the absolute stupidity of two 40-year-old men living with their parents and acting like spoiled 14-year-old brats. With Adam McKay directing and co-writing, the film was in good hands from the outset, especially since the man behind most of the best early-2000s comedies, Judd Apatow,...

In a casting that raises several questions, Ben Stiller is in final talks to star in “Three Identical Strangers,” a limited series adaptation of the acclaimed documentary film, according to Variety.
The 2018 film, which was directed by Tim Wardle and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland — three identical triplets who meet by chance as adults, and the revelation of the undisclosed scientific experiment that separated them by birth. Upon its release, “Three Identical Strangers” received positive reviews, and made the shortlist for the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category.
Stiller will play all three of the brothers as adults. What makes his casting unusual is that Galland died by suicide in 1995, when he was 34. Stiller is currently 57, nearly 25 years older than Galland was at time of death. In addition, the meat...

The Sanderson sisters put another spell on “Hocus Pocus” fans — but did Disney miss out by bypassing theaters for a streaming-first release?
The straight-to-Disney+ sequel to the 1993 movie — a theatrical flop (45 million global on a 28 million budget) that later became a beloved cult phenomenon — debuted on the weekend of Sept. 30 with Nielsen viewership of 2.75 billion minutes viewed. The film dropped hard the first full week after that opening weekend, which isn’t unexpected, yet still posted a terrific 1.099 billion minutes viewed from October 3-9.
“Hocus Pocus 2” was also the fourth most in-demand movie over the month of October, behind Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” Sony/Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Warner Bros./DC’s “Black Adam” — all big-screen blockbusters, according to data from Parrot Analytics. “Hocus Pocus 2” even finished ahead of Warner Bros.’ big-screen hit “The Batman” in terms of demand, which Parrot measures by factoring in consumer research,...

It’s been 18 years since “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” opened in theaters, and the film remains a bonafide classic for a generation of moviegoers who were teenagers in the early 2000s. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, the sports comedy stars Vince Vaughn and a deranged Ben Stiller as rival gym owners who face off in a dodgeball tournament. The supporting cast includes Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Rip Torn, Stephen Root and Alan Tudyck. According to Long, a “Dodgeball” sequel idea has been been ironed out by Vaughn and is just waiting on Stiller’s approval.
“Of course I would love to do it and I hope that it ends up happening, but I think Ben [Stiller] is a little… what he told me on that podcast was that he’s a little trepidatious about doing a sequel to something so beloved, something that people enjoy so much,” Long told ComicBook.com...

Justin Long is ready to duck, dip, dive, and dodge when it comes to convincing Ben Stiller to star in a “Dodgeball” sequel.
The “Barbarian” actor confirmed that former co-star Vince Vaughn is spearheading an idea for a follow-up film featuring the rivalry between Average Joe’s Gym and Globo Gym. However, after the flop of “Zoolander 2,” Stiller is hesitant to revisit the beloved 2004 sports comedy.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.
Per an official synopsis: “The Peripheral” centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart, ambitious, and doomed. She has no future; until the future comes calling for her. “The Peripheral” is...

Ben Stiller's 2001 comedy "Zoolander" was an ode to hot people everywhere. The movie, which centers on Stiller as a dim-witted supermodel named Derek Zoolander who is brainwashed and trained to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia in order to ensure that stricter child labor laws are not passed in the country, is one of the strongest comedies of its era, and perhaps Ben Stiller's best work. Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson as well as Stiller turn in comedic performances that are as hilarious as they are absurd.
The movie is also full of celebrity cameos, from Lance Bass to Cuba Gooding Jr. to Donald Trump. Many big names had minor speaking roles in the movie as well, including Vince Vaughn and Alexander Skarsgard.

Ben and Ella Stiller turned the 2022 Emmys into a family date night. The actor and his 20-year-old daughter attended the award show on Sept. 12, walking the red carpet together before heading into the ceremony at Microsoft Theater. They subtly coordinated outfits for the big night out, with Ben sporting a classic tuxedo and Ella wearing a black strapless gown featuring a prominent leg slit. With her blond hair color and wispy bangs, Ella looked so much like her mom, Christine Taylor, circa the early 2000s - the resemblance was hard to miss.
Ben's work on Apple TV+'s "Severance" earned him an Emmy nomination for outstanding directing for a drama series this year, up against "Ozark" director Jason Bateman and "Squid Game" director Hwang Dong-hyuk, among others. During a red carpet interview with E! News, he addressed the possibility of starring on the show, saying, "I don't know. I love directing it.

Ben Stiller wishes he could sever any memory of auditioning for one 1992 comedy.
The Emmy-nominated “Severance” director revealed during a Q&a panel for the AppleTV+ series that he tried out for “My Cousin Vinny” in a role that went to Ralph Macchio. (It was revealed earlier this year in a Rolling Stone oral history of the film that Stiller was considered for Macchio’s role.)
“I tanked my third callback for ‘My Cousin Vinny’ to play the friend,” Stiller said. “It still bothers me. You go in as an actor and you do your thing and you sometimes feel really good about it and it just doesn’t work.” The conversation was moderated by Kumail Nanjiani.

Natalie Morales will be double-dipping for a while. On Tuesday, she told her fellow cohosts on CBS’ The Talk about an upcoming gig.
“I have some exciting news to share!” Morales gushed. “Starting next month, I have a little role — well, it’s a recurring role — on the CBS Daytime drama The Young and the Restless.”
Morales will portray investigative reporter Talia Morgan, “and I’m investigating Diane Jenkins, played by Susan Walters. You know, she’s the one who faked her own death. She’s returned recently to Genoa City after just being gone for 10 years. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Her new co-stars include Melody Thomas Scott and Michelle Stafford, among others.
“I’m having so much fun, these ladies are incredible,” Morales said. What’s she looking forward to? She noted that she hasn’t yet gotten the opportunity to “do one of those soap opera slaps.

“I first learned about this show very casually at a Halloween party,” admits “Severance” composer Theodore Shapiro. “I was with Adam Scott, who I know because our kids go to school together. I sort of thought, ‘I hope I get that call.’ In late 2019 Ben called and told me about the series and he sent me a couple of scripts. It was immediately so thrilling and sparked so many ideas. I started writing themes immediately.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

There's that saying, "When one door closes another opens" — and Ben Stiller feels like that's exactly what happened to him when "Zoolander 2" absolutely tanked in the court of public opinion in 2016. Sometimes it’s hard to be professionally good-looking, as Ben Stiller discovered following the box office misstep of “Zoolander 2.”
While the 2016 sequel to the classic model mock-drama flopped, writer-director Stiller was free to pursue actual dramatic projects, like the Apple TV+ series “Severance” currently rolling out on the platform.
“If ‘Zoolander 2’ had been a huge hit, and then people were saying ‘Zoolander 3! Do this movie! That movie!'” Stiller told Esquire, admitting watching the film tank was “not a great experience.”
“That might have taken me off the road of having the space to work on developing [‘Escape From Dannemora’]. I might have gotten distracted by other bright shiny objects, but instead it opened a path where I could just do what I’d honestly wanted to do for years and years, which was: just direct something!” Stiller said. “To say, I’m just going to work on this project that I want to work on,...

With a reported budget of $50 million and a U.S. box office gross of only $29 million, “Zoolander 2” is one of the biggest flops of Ben Stiller’s career. The writer-director-actor recently told Esquire that watching his star-studded “Zoolander” sequel fail at the box office around the world was “not a great experience.” Stiller produced, starred in, directed and co-wrote the flop, but he said he has a glass-half-full mentality when it comes to reflecting on the misstep.

Sometimes actors take roles that really aren't a good idea and only realize the depth of their mistake years after the fact. That appears to be the case for Benedict Cumberbatch, who came under fire in 2015/2016 for appearing in "Zoolander 2" as the non-binary character All, a crude and harmful stereotype of transgender and non-binary people.
Even at the time there were calls for a boycott in response to the character's appearance in an early trailer. Activist Sarah Rose elaborated in her online petition against the film:

Benedict Cumberbatch is aware of the controversy surrounding his character in Zoolander 2. In the 2016 comedy—a box office and critical flop—the Doctor Strange actor plays a non-binary, long-haired, eyebrow-less model named All. "There was a lot of contention around the role, understandably now," the actor told fellow Zoolander 2 star Penélope Cruz, during Variety's Actors on Actors series. "In this era, it would never have been performed by anybody other than a trans actor." Cumberbatch continued, "But I remember at the time not thinking of it necessarily in that regard, and it being more about two dinosaurs, two heteronormative...

Benedict Cumberbatch and Penélope Cruz joined forces for Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” series, presented by Amazon Studios, but it was not the first time the two performers had collaborated on screen. Cumberbatch and Cruz both had roles in Ben Stiller’s comedy “Zoolander 2,” a critical flop in 2016 that also bombed at the box office with just $28 million in the U.S. Cumberbatch’s casting as a non-binary fashion model named All proved problematic, and the actor admitted to Cruz that he would not be cast in the role had the sequel been made today.

Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (“Power of the Dog”) sat down for a virtual chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors, presented by Amazon Studios. For more, click here.
Benedict Cumberbatch is so over Zoom. But a new spike in Covid-19 cases with the omicron variant has meant that his planned sit-down with Penélope Cruz will instead unfold over a screen. It’s a change that’s causing some technical hurdles. A vacationing Cruz (who is somewhere in Spain) is battling a weak internet connection, and Cumberbatch is grappling with instructions that require him to upload video to the cloud, check his microphone levels and make sure that his iPad battery doesn’t run out.

Not a single transgender character was depicted in any of the movies released by the major studios last year for the fourth year in a row, according to a new report from GLAAD. The LGBTQ rights organization’s report found that “this remains one of the more glaring ways mainstream studios continue to lag behind other forms of entertainment media.” It also found “a complete absence” of storylines about LGBTQ characters living with HIV – or with any disabilities at all – in any of the films surveyed, while only one of the studios’ animated films featured an LGBTQ character.
Even so, the 20 LGBTQ characters who were featured in last year’s crop of 10 LGBTQ-inclusive films were more diverse, saw a significant increase in screen time and were featured in a higher percentage of films than in 2019. And nine of those 10 films got a passing grade from GLAAD – a record high 90%.

You could be forgiven for thinking that there was some kind of insider trading going on when Justin Theroux was announced to play the lead in The Mosquito Coast, a seven-part Apple TV+ series based on a book written by his uncle: it’s a project, literally, with his name written all over it. But the 49-year-old actor, who has a few years on Harrison Ford from when he starred in Peter Weir’s 1986 adaptation of Paul Theroux’s novel, insists that it came to him just like any other opportunity. “It was really just the normal channels,” he shrugs.
Today, Theroux seems especially nonchalant, taking a Zoom call in his New York kitchen and looking disconcertingly like Super Mario with his black woolly hat and furry Magnum ’stache. “I heard about it, I tracked it, and I asked to read it,” he remembers. “I liked the script a lot,...

Before watching Coming 2 America, try to think of some successful comedy sequels. If the best you can conjure up is Wayne’s World 2 or 22 Jump Street then that really speaks for itself, doesn’t it? More difficult than the traditional comedy sequel is the many-years-too-late variety of retread. Just ask Zoolander 2 or Dumb and Dumber To. Rehashing the same jokes and running them into the ground, reusing the old beloved catchphrases, and hitting the same story beats typically set comedy sequels up for failure, no matter how nostalgic audiences may be for the original. For every Borat 2, there are 10 Hangover 2s.
The team behind Coming 2 America knows this. They even acknowledge it with a joke in the movie. It’s obvious that the everyone involved with Coming 2 America, including returning stars Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall, director Craig Brewer, and screenwriters Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein,...

Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo reteam for a likable but throwaway comedy about two best friends going on vacation
The staggering success of 2011’s Bridesmaids – almost $300m globally, two Oscar nominations, a belated industry realisation that uh yeah women can do mass market comedies too – had an unlikely effect on its breakout star, and co-writer, Kristen Wiig. While Saturday Night Live viewers already cherished her as the show’s hit-after-hit Mvp, global audiences were now too let in on the joke and most of us waited impatiently to see what she would do next, perhaps expecting more of the same. But unlike the more obvious scene-stealer of the film, Melissa McCarthy, Wiig chose not to pursue a career headlining studio comedies, sticking mostly to the outskirts, choosing Sundance over Hollywood (she repeatedly turned down the offer to do a Bridesmaids sequel). There were muted successes but more often disappointments and...

Comedy sequels are arguably the most difficult type of follow-up to pull off, and the risk level increases the longer the gap since the first movie. Action and thriller franchises are almost expected to rehash the same plot and character beats over and over again, whereas a series designed entirely to generate laughs from the audience can’t exactly deliver the same joke a handful of times and expect it to remain fresh.
For every 22 Jump Street, Bill & Ted Face the Music or Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, there’s a Dumb and Dumber To, Zoolander 2 or Son of the Mask at the other end of the scale, and as the years pass, it becomes more and more difficult to justify the existence of a long-delayed sequel to an established comedy hit.
That hasn’t stopped Vince Vaughn from confirming that he’s held talks with co-star Owen Wilson...
