“Fantastic Four” is close to finding a new director, as “WandaVision” filmmaker Matt Shakman is in early talks to direct the film at Marvel, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The MCU film is scheduled for release on Nov. 8, 2024.
Marvel did not return a request for comment.
“Fantastic Four” will arrive after Phase 5 closes with “Thunderbolts” on July 26, 2024. And while Marvel Studios did not reveal their full Phase 6 lineup, they did reveal that it will close out with two “Avengers” films: “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” on May 2, 2025, and “Avengers: Secret Wars” on Nov. 7, 2025. In the comic book world, the Fantastic Four are known as Marvel's first family, but at this point, they're some of the last major heroes to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We still don't know who will be playing the new incarnations of these beloved characters in Marvel Studios' upcoming movie, but at least we know who's going to be in the director's chair, per Deadline: Matt Shakman, the filmmaker behind every episode of "WandaVision" and several episodes of "Game of Thrones" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."
Fox delivered two "Fantastic Four" movies back in the 2000s, and the studio tried and failed to reboot the franchise in 2015, meaning there have been three attempts already at bringing the Fantastic Four to the big screen. When Disney acquired Fox in 2019, however, it raised hopes that Marvel would finally be able to do the Fantastic Four right on celluloid.

Matt Shakman has reportedly closed a deal to direct the next “Star Trek” film, capping off a bustling Tuesday for the director who guided “WandaVision” to 23 Emmy nominations earlier today. Deadline reported on Tuesday that production on the still-untitled film is set to begin in spring 2020. The film, which hails from Paramount and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions company, has a script by Geneva Robertson (“Captain Marvel”) and Lindsey Beer. The publication reported that Shakman chose to direct the upcoming “Star Trek” movie over several other offers.
The news marks a significant return to film for Shakman, who previously directed the 2014 thriller “Cut Bank.” Shakman has primarily directed television shows in recent years and has worked on several of the industry’s highest-profile titles, including “Succession,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Boys,” “Billions,” and “Fargo.” Shakman also directed all nine episodes of Disney+’s recently-released “WandaVision,” which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When filmmaker Mel Gibson decided to tell the World War II story of Desmond Doss, a brave soldier who saved 75 of his company at the battle of Hacksaw Ridge in Okinawa, Japan, he made the choice to return home to Australia to do it. In doing so, he also ended up hiring some of Australia’s finest talent, including Hugo Weaving and Rachel Griffiths.
Another one of the film’s Australian cast is actress Teresa Palmer, who was able to break into Hollywood earlier in her career with roles in Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the young adult films I Am Number Four and Warm Bodies.
In Hacksaw Ridge, she plays Dorothy Schutte, the eventual wife of Andrew Garfield’s Desmond Doss. She’s a nurse Desmond meets and falls for, and whose work inspires him to go to war as a combat medic, while sticking to his...

There is very little to discuss in terms of new releases this week, especially since I haven't seen the two new Costa-Gravas titles or Rainer Werner Fassbinder title from Criterion, which lead off the "Even More" section below. I have, however, updated the upcoming release schedule with several new titles including Ex Machina, the "Rogue Cut" of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Insurgent and Slow West. Hopefully there's something that catches your eye. The Loft I never saw this, but the way Universal treated it pretty much said all I needed to know. Then I talked to someone that did see it and I know to stay away for good.
Seventh Son This one I did see and it is quite the trainwreck.

The Postman Always Dies Twice: Shakman’s Noir Infused Debut Underwhelms
Seasoned television director Matt Shakman (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) makes his narrative feature debut with Cut Bank, a rural neo-noir written by fellow television writer Robert Patino (“Sons of Anarchy”) that draws comparisons to the work of the Coen Bros. but pales considerably beyond its devious narrative. Sometimes as darkly comedic as its origins would portend, the film hits too many false notes as it chugs through several twists that don’t seem all that surprising. Set within the small town façade we’ve seen countless times before, where greed and general malcontent are barely contained beneath the superficial veneer of lip-serviced hospitality, Shakman and Patino gather the usual suspects and toss them about in the kind of impossible scam that suggests these players have never bothered to watch classic film noir.

With Blood Simple and Fargo, the Coen brothers so effectively staked their claim on the rural noir that it's difficult not to think of them when the small-town con in Cut Bank starts to go bad. In his first feature, Matt Shakman (who directed episodes of FX's Fargo) envisions the real Cut Bank, Montana, as an outpost of Coen country, with eccentric residents, comfortably worn décor, and a kitschy penguin statue. But Shakman trades their comic violence and bleak humor for benevolent empathy and powerful vulnerability. When Dwayne McLaren (Liam Hemsworth) and girlfriend Cassandra Steeley (Teresa Palmer) capture the shooting of squirrelly mailman Georgie Wits (Bruce Dern) on camera, they see the footage as their chance to finally leave town and ...

You’re about see Liam Hemsworth like never before. In the upcoming film Cut Bank, the actor stars as Dwayne McLaren, a former high school football star whose life changes forever when he happens to catch a murder on video tape in Cut Bank, Montana. In perhaps his darkest, most suspenseful film yet, it’s the thrill of watching him take charge that will make you fall in love. Again and again.
Rounding out the cast are Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies), Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire), John Malkovich, Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Dern, and Oliver Platt. With a roster like this, the performances will likely more than deliver. Until we’re able to see the film, let’s just stare at our favorite Aussie some more.

[Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Directv and the suspenseful thriller, Cut Bank, which is available exclusively on Directv.] Longtime television director Matt Shakman makes his big screen debut with "Cut Bank," a Coenesque thriller that, oddly enough, is actually premiering on the small screen via Video On Demand. Before directing Liam Hemsworth, Billy Bob Thornton, John Malkovich, Michael Stuhlbarg and Bruce Dern in this nail-biter about a man who witnesses a small town murder, Shakman directed dozens of TV episodes for series including "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "Revenge," "The Good Wife," "Mad Men," "Six Feet Under," "Psych," "House," "New Girl," "Ugly betty," "Weeds" and "Childrens Hospital," to name a few. Good folks. Bad deeds. I have to give credit where credit is due. A24 has whipped up some solid posters for the crime thriller Cut Bank (see the trailer), co-starring Teresa Palmer and Liam Hemsworth as some small town people who get mixed up with "good folks" and "bad deeds". Whenever a studio actually releases artistic posters it's worth pointing out because it's still a unique decision, and I still like seeing these. The eye-glasses poster below is an obvious riff on the classic Straw Dogs poster but I quite like the way it looks, along with the bloody mailbox. These make me more interested in the film than any floating heads design. Here's the two new posters for Matt Shakman's Cut Bank, both released officially by A24 Films: You can also watch the first official trailer for Cut Bank here, for those interested in seeing this film. So far, Australian stars Liam Hemsworth and Teresa Palmer have starred in two movies together. There's Love & Honor from a few years ago and Kill Me Three Times coming this year. Now you can add one more to the mix with Cut Bank, a new thriller about a former high school football star turned mechanic who just wants to get out of the titular small Montana town. Of course, things finally get interesting when he stumbles across a murder, and ends up in serious danger. There's an interesting supporting cast here too with Bruce Dern, Billy Bob Thornton, Oliver Platt and John Malkovich co-starring. Watch below! Here's the first trailer for Matt Shakman's Cut Bank from A24: A son of tiny Cut Bank, Montana, "the coldest spot in the nation," handsome young Dwayne McLaren (Liam Hemsworth) yearns to escape small town life with his sweet, vivacious girlfriend (Teresa Palmer...

Director Matt Shakman’s (TV’s The Good Wife and Fargo) upcoming small-town thriller possesses all of the necessary qualities to gather advance attention. It’s got a quirky indie crime premise, a solid director at the helm, and a starry cast. Does this mean that Cut Bank will deliver the goods? With the film’s release date looming closer, a new trailer has landed (via Yahoo! Movies) that muddies the moral waters of its story…

Watch: Liam Hemsworth & Teresa Palmer Deal With Small Town Murder In Trailer For Thriller 'Cut Bank'
Liam Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer, Billy Bob Thornton, John Malkovich, Bruce Dern, Oliver Platt, and Michael Stuhlbarg —that's a cast worth getting interested in, particularly when they gather for a small town-set thriller like "Cut Bank," and the first trailer has arrived. Based on the 2009 Black List script by Roberto Patino and directed by TV helmer Matt Shakman ("Fargo," "The Good Wife") making his feature film debut, the film tells the story of Dwayne McLaren (Hemsworth), a young auto mechanic and former high school football star who wants to get the hell out of the frozen-in-time town of Cut Bank, Montana. But he stumbles across a murder and is caught up in a spiral of dangerous events. Reviewing the film last summer at the Los Angeles Film Festival, our Charlie Schmidlin wasn't impressed, calling the picture "a dozy small town caper that never gains a sense of location or thrills." "Cut Bank" arrives.

I can't remember the last time I had eight major titles to report on in an MPAA ratings bulletin, but today is that day with the most notable being the PG-13 for Furious 7 and all its "prolonged frenetic sequences of violence, action and mayhem", another PG-13 for Jupiter Ascending and its "suggestive content and partial nudity" and a PG for Paddington, which appears to be taking a small page out of Ted's book with some "rude humor". There's also the PG-13 rating for the much buzzed about (and worthily so) Selma from Ava DuVernay. In addition to that we have A24's Cut Bank starring Liam Hemsworth and Teresa Palmer as well as their action thriller Son of a Gun starring Brenton Thwaites, Alicia Vikander and Ewan McGregor. Warner Bros. has a couple in the mix with Jaume Collet-Serra's reteaming with Liam Neeson after Non-Stop in yet another "aging hitman" movie,...

Three times lucky and fourth time the charm? Depending on who ask, The End of the Tour, the book to screen adaptation of David Lipsky’s “Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself” would be welcomed with both anticipation and trepidation (the Wallace clan haven’t warmed up to the idea). James Ponsoldt, a specialist in the human condition, has a road-tripper that fills out a certain quota: high profile sales items (at this point we have no idea if Sony might be selling or keeping) with attention-getting topliners in Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg. Ponsoldt’s entire feature filmography has screened in Park City, but this is perhaps the least likely candidate to premiere this January as the shooting budget on this road-tripper was perhaps larger than that of Off the Black (2006), Smashed (2012) and The Spectacular Now (2013) combined. Production began at the beginning of ’14 and Sony acquired all...

Editor’S Note: This is a capsule review. The full review will be released once the film hits theatres.
It speaks to the conceptual issues facing Cut Bank that, even if it didn’t feature Coen brothers actors Michael Stuhlbarg and Billy Bob Thornton, and the latter hadn’t recently starred in the recent Fargo TV series (which Cut Bank helmer Matt Shakman directed two episodes of), it would still play like a bad imitation of Coen small time crime. Making the jump from TV along with first-time feature writer Roberto Patino, Cut Bank is rife with screenwriting 101 plot points: fake bullets, an implausible get-rich quick scheme, and hokey small town stereotypes are all present and accounted for.
Liam Hemsworth stars as a Montana mechanic who gets himself into a fix involving a murdered mailman (Bruce Dern, having more fun than you will) and a missing parcel. As a pretty blank face,...

It may be called the coldest spot in the nation, but “Cut Bank” serves as a setting for a good thriller mystery movie.

Cut Bank, Montana might be the last place we’d expect to witness an “Office Space” reference, and yet halfway through “Cut Bank” there it is—actor Michael Stuhlbarg asking after a parcel just as Stephen Root’s Milton did with a stapler. The line is meant as a source of both laughs and menace, but the minute Stuhlbarg’s villainous get-up lumbers into frame—heavy-lensed glasses, trucker hat, grimy fingernails—to a sting usually reserved for Jason Voorhees, we know towards which side of the spectrum director Matt Shakman’s leans. It’s just a shame that screenwriter Rodrigo Patino’s Black List script cribs from twenty other sources besides Mike Judge, planting accomplished actors in a dozy small town caper that never gains a sense of location or thrills. Stuhlbarg’s backwoods creep Derby Milton makes up the most mystical aspect of Shakman’s feature directorial debut, his...

It's no easy task to write a crime thriller script that is both tense and comedic. But even when a writer is able to pull it off on the page, an even more difficult task awaits a director to nail that tricky tone. In his Black List-gracing feature screenplay Cut Bank, Rodrigo Patino, a writer on the FX series Sons of Anarchy, delivers on the first task. Luckily, TV and theater director Matt Shakman, perhaps best known for his work on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is no slouch either. The result is the perfect mix of those two popular television shows; a tense and captivating thriller that is also filled with laughs. While it might sound like a macabre title, Cut Bank actually...

Though he has directed countless television shows, including "It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia," "Fargo," "Mad Men" and "The Good Wife," Matt Shakman only recently directed his first feature film, "Cut Bank," which is screening this week at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Before he started filming the noir thriller, which stars Liam Hemsworth, Billy Bob Thornton and John Malkovich, he consulted his mentor, veteran writer-director-producer Ed Zwick ("Legends of the Fall," "Blood Diamond"), who had given Shakman his first shot at TV directing (on his show "Once & Again") and helped him produce "Cut Bank."
