The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.
Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.
“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.
“And I’ve been part of it for something like three years, I think,” adds Øvredal.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

The Vampire’s Kiss episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Nicolas Cage has brought us some truly unhinged performances. From Castor Troy in Face/Off, to his supporting role as Eddie in Deadfall, and even Edward Malus, a woman-punching policeman in the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man. There is no stopping his extreme method acting. But where did it all come from? In 1989, Nicolas’ seedling was born in the horror comedy Vampire’s Kiss (get it Here). Back in the 80’s, some would say that his performance was too chaotic and horrendous. If you were to ask a millennial’s opinion today, they would tell you it’s one of the greatest films ever made. Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.
The Josh Brolin-starring Outer Range premieres April 15 and looks like it could be a wild ride. The synopsis is terse and reads “A rancher fighting for his land and family stumbles upon an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness, forcing a confrontation with the Unknown in ways both intimate and cosmic in the untamable American West.” That, combined with an enigmatic first trailer, has our interest piqued.
Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...

The nonfiction book that inspired the Juliette Binoche movie “Between Two Worlds” resulted from nearly six months of undercover reporting by Florence Aubenas. The respected French journalist wanted to understand how roughly one-eighth of the country’s work force — those who rely on non-contract jobs — got by during the recent economic crisis. To observe the situation firsthand, Aubenas moved to the coast, presented herself at employment centers, and tried to get hired, taking practically any gig that was offered — which wasn’t much, and hardly enough to survive on. In the end, she wound up cleaning the ferry out of Ouistreham, describing the experience and those she observed in her book “The Night Cleaner.”
Now, were someone to make a movie of that book, they would almost certainly start by removing Aubenas from the picture. As in American journalist Barbara Ehrenreich’s similar, celebrated eye-opener “Nickel and Dimed,” the writer...

Director Chris McKay is making his live-action directorial debut with “The Tomorrow War.”
The “The Lego Batman Movie” director’s upcoming film is set in 2051, a time in which mankind is losing a war against an alien army and the world’s only hope for survival are the present-day soldier and civilian recruits being transported into the future to join the fight. Among these recruits is high school teacher and veteran Dan Forester (Chris Pratt), who teams up with a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons) to save the planet for his young daughter and wife.
Intent on telling a human story alongside a story of deadly aliens from the future, McKay says he changed the whole third act of the script to properly detangle Dan’s complicated relationship with his father and give each character a moment to pop back up and in a way,...

Less than a week after Anthony Hopkins won his second Academy Award for “The Father,” a dud called “The Virtuoso” arrives to make you wonder if they gave it to the wrong guy. The lousy-follow-up phenomenon happens all the time, but rarely does an Oscar winner have a turkey already waiting in the wings to undermine a career-high achievement.
Hopkins isn’t awful in “The Virtuoso,” but the movie that surrounds him is. It’s a cut-rate thriller about a nameless hit man (Anson Mount) so busy telling audiences how professional he is — via such affirmational observations as “You’re a professional, an expert dedicated to timing and precision” — that he doesn’t seem to notice his latest assignment is a setup.
The killer in question lives in a cabin in the woods, as so many movie assassins do. But instead of having to fight off younger comers eager to speed his retirement along,...

The Live Playoffs for Season 18 of “The Voice” concluded last Tuesday, leaving nine artists in contention for the title. One member from each team was voted through by America and each coach then had a chance to save another artist they wanted to move forward. That left Blake Shelton, John Legend, Nick Jonas and Kelly Clarkson each with two artists on their teams before the live instant save.
In that instant save leading into the semifinals, the remaining member from each team with the most audience votes earned a chance to compete. Joanna Serenko from Team Blake ended up defeating Mandi Castillo from Team Legend, Michael Williams from Team Nick and Cedrice from Team Kelly. That bumps Team Blake up to three contenders, but does that increase his odds of winning his seventh title?

Since Ava DuVernay’s latest dive into the social justice system, “When They See Us,” dropped on Netflix on May 31, the criticism and backlash toward former New York prosecutor Linda Fairstein has been swift and strong.
Fairstein was painted as the villain in DuVernay’s four-episode limited series, and she has since been the subject of a #CancelLindaFairstein hashtag online.
When producers of “When They See Us” reached out to the prosecutor-turned-author, Fairstein made it clear she would talk to them if they were not also going to talk to the five accused (and exonerated) men in the case: Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Yosef Salaam, Kevin Richardson and Raymond Santana. Felicity Huffman plays Fairstein in the series.

Here's the trailer for a new horror thriller called Patient Zero that tries to do something a little new and different with the zombie genre. The story follows a man played by Matt Smith who has the unique ability to speak "the Infected's new language" and leads the last survivors on a hunt to find Patient Zero and a cure. Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) is helping him on his journey. The big twist is, the infected don't feel they are diseased, they feel that they are the solution and the cure to get rid of the human infection.
This actually looks like a solid movie worth checking out. It was directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky and this is the synopsis:
In this new pandemic thriller, humanity is battling intelligent, adrenaline-fueled creatures born from a viral super-strain. After being bitten, human survivor Morgan (Matt Smith) realizes he is asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected,...

Patient Zero has to be one of the most unoriginal titles for a movie. I nearly scrolled right past it thinking it was an old movie but it's not and if anything, it actually looks like it could be a good one.
Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, the movie stars Natalie Dormer as Dr. Gina Rose, a doctor who, with the help of a military officer played by Matt Smith, are trying to find the titular patient zero of the zombie apocalypse. Enter Stanley Tucci, a new breed of zombie that isn't your typical mumbling brain eater but rather, the next step in the evolutionary ladder and the goal: rid the world of the pesky humans!

With the upcoming Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell movies coming out over the next few weeks, one might want to take a look back to the '70s and '80s as a time when Asian productions were frequently brought to American shores.
One of the originators of that tradition was the cartoon Star Blazers, based on the Japanese anime Space Battleship Yamato.
The Star Blazers animated show only had three seasons that ran from 1979 to 1984, but it created an avid fanbase with the related toys, comic books and other iterations, all of which followed the adventures of the crew of the Argo, an old battleship turned into a starship that is used to fight against the forces of Gamilon, a distant planet that attacks earth sometime in the future.

Two legends of very different fields are getting biopics.
First up, Variety reports that Warner Bros. Pictures are developing an untitled drama about legendary late astrophysicist Carl Sagan who hosted the original "Cosmos" series.
Specifics of what parts of his life the film would cover are being kept under wraps. Zach Dean ("Deadfall") penned the script while Lynda Obst and Sagan's widow Ann Druyan are producing.
Meanwhile The Wrap reports that Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is in discussions to play Aretha Franklin in a biopic from producer Scott Bernstein ("Straight Outta Compton") for his Smb Films banner.
The film will deal with the famed singer's rise to fame in the 1960s and 1970s and delve into her relationship with her abusive ex-husband Ted White.
Hudson has not been officially cast as there is no deal in place as yet, but a rep has confirmed that conversations have taken place.

A Russell T Davies TV project is always something to be excited about. From gifting us Queer as Folk to saving Doctor Who, he has given us a lot to be grateful for over the years. Hence why his various comeback series on Channel 4, E4 and online later this month are being greeted with such a sense of anticipation.
Cucumber, Banana and Tofu come 16 years after Davies shook up TV with Queer as Folk and his new shows look likely to be just as exciting, exploring the passions and pitfalls of 21st century gay life with a candid sense of humour.

Donning the cape and tights to play a big screen superhero was often seen as career suicide for actors. This idea is mined to brilliant effect in Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman, with a former comic book star looking to relaunch his career with an ambitious Broadway play.
Adding extra spice to Birdman is the casting of Michael Keaton, himself a former Batman whose post-tights career has been somewhat hit and miss. This film, however, is a stunning reminder of just how good an actor Keaton is and proof that careers don't end when on-screen superpowers fade away.

Since leaving the massively popular British sci-fi series Doctor Who in 2013, Matt Smith has been racking up an impressive number of major roles in buzzy tentpoles like Terminator: Genisys and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and now the actor has added one more exciting project to his schedule.
