To be fair, you know what you’re in for with any Asylum movie that is homaging a bigger-budget Hollywood flick… After all it’s become de rigueur for David Michael Latt and co. to produce what have been affectionately dubbed “mockbusters” for all the big Summer blockbusters: films such as Transmorphers, American Battleship, The Terminators, Almighty Thor, Battle of Los Angeles, and Avengers Grimm. But watching a mockbuster from The Asylum doesn’t neccesarily mean audiences are in for a terrible time, there are often sparks of genius within their films – be it some great casting or an inspired plot.

NBA fans won’t be caught talking crochet with Aunt Millie this Christmas. Not if they’ve seen Espn and ABC’s five-game December 25 schedule, which features a rematch of the 2016 Finals, a Boston-New York clash and the Battle of Los Angeles. That’s just one part of the sprawling, 100-game regular-season NBA package the Disney corporate siblings unveiled today. It’s the most games ever slated for the networks. The schedule features 82 games on Espn, which generally includes…...

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla — one of the top independent promotions in the country — held their annual Battle of Los Angeles tournament this past weekend, August 29th through the 31st. The prestigious event saw Ricochet vanquish five other wrestlers to win the tournament. However, it was a speech by frequent Pwg competitor, Willie Mack, which has drawn the attention of the wrestling community.
Reportedly, Mack gave a farewell speech during the third night of the tournament. Milk Chocolate — as he occasionally calls himself — has been competing for Pwg since 2010. He’s also spent time in the Championship Wrestling from Hollywood promotion, as well as a few visits to Mexico.
Mack attended a WWE tryout camp some months ago, alongside Kevin Steen, Roderick Strong, and a handful of other indy standouts. Steen has since been signed by the company, and now Mack has as well. It was reported some months ago that Willie...

Rey Mysterio recently made waves for defying his WWE contract — which he wants out of — and appearing at Aaa’s Triplemania event. Reportedly, there has been no punishment handed down to Mysterio since his act of defiance and apparently, there has been no communication or contact made at all.
Now, WWE contracted star, Brad Maddox has made a similar move. Maddox was spotted at last evening’s Pro Wrestling Guerrilla event in Reseda, California. Pwg is one of the most popular independent wrestling promotions there is. The company operates exclusively out of Southern California — or SoCal.

Last night, August 29th, was the first event in Pwg’s Battle of Los Angeles series for 2014. The Bola series, as its often called, is a single elimination tournament held over multiple nights. This year represents the 10th annual incarnation of the series and will conclude on Sunday, August 31st.

I’ve had my eye on the career of actress and burgeoning scream queen Jamie Bernadette since we met on the set of the upcoming film Axeman at Cutter’s Creek back in 2012, so it’s little surprise that my curiosity was piqued by the drop of the trailer for Mile Marker Seven, the latest horror feature she’s headlining. Bad things seem to happen in the forest, and she sat down with us to give us the 411.
Written and directed by first-time feature filmmakers Anthony Scarpulla and Anthony Torrez and produced by Petter Anderson, Matthew Helderman and Luke Dylan Taylor, Mile Marker Seven follows (according to the synopsis) the character of "David (actor Wil Daniels), an independent oil contractor, on the brink of semi-retirement, is brought the opportunity of a lifetime by his friend and former business partner, Barry. To celebrate the release of the spectacular action sci-fi Battle of the Damned starring the killer combination of Dolph Lundgren, zombies and robots (seriously) – out on DVD & Blu-ray 26th December – we have a copy on Blu-ray to give away to one lucky winner!
Following a deadly viral outbreak, private military soldier Max Gatling (Lundgren) is enlisted to rescue a female survivor from the confines of the contaminated zone on the outskirts of civilisation. Now the British summer has made a belated reappearance, we can expect a few downsides such as hay fever, sunburn and insect bites - but no flying pests in our gardens can rival Dragon Wasps. And a can of the standard repellent probably won't do much good either.
This giant creature feature is written by Mark Atkins. His previous genre outings include numerous hit-inspired 'mockbusters' such as Snakes on a Train, 30,000 Leagues Under The Sea, War of the Worlds 2, Allan Quartermain and the Temple of Skulls, Princess of Mars (an alternative version of John Carter), Battle of Los Angeles and Avh: Alien vs Hunter.
He's also been involved in several dragon-themed productions including Dragonquest, Merlin and the War of the Dragons, and Dragon Crusaders.
Now offering an insect slant on the concept, the cast of Dragon Wasps features Corin Nemec (Stargate Sg-1, Smallville, Supernatural), Dominika Juillet (Dark Angel), Benjamin Easterday...

Well this is somewhat unexpected, and yet it's also been a long time coming. By now most movie fans are familiar with The Asylum, a low budget production company that has made a name for themselves by putting out direct-to-video rip-offs of popular Hollywood blockbusters (often referred to as "mockbusters"). Some of their not-so-acclaimed films include Transmorphers, Snakes on a Train, Paranormal Entity and Battle of Los Angeles, and they are usually released just prior to the Hollywood equivalent, creating confusion at video rental stores and on Netflix. Up until now, most studios have not really paid much attention to these atrocities, assuming that most consumers are smart enough to be able to tell them apart. This week, however, Universal Pictures has finally taken up arms against them, slapping them with a lawsuit over their upcoming Battleship clone, entitled American Battleship. According to TMZ, Universal has filed a lawsuit claiming...

Mega Shark has battled a giant octopus and a ferocious “crocosaurus” and, apparently, fans of the franchise have demanded more action from the enormous freak of nature who can leap thousands of feet in the air and destroy half the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Asylum has officially greenlit production on Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark, the third installment in the Mega Shark franchise, following Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus in 2009 and Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus in 2010. An all-star cast will embrace the dangers of living near a Zombie Plantation. Celebrities will invade Los Angeles this weekend for the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. Searchlights will blaze and flashbulbs will pop as Hollywood stars will descend from the heavens -- or maybe just the Malibu hills -- to touch the ground that regular Angelenos walk on each day. They'll smile and snarl our traffic. They'll toss their hair and forget to thank their husbands. They'll praise each other for their bravery, while collecting $75,000 gift bags. L.A. is accustomed to such strange invasions, of course. If you're a movie fan, you already know that L.A. has been invaded over the years by everything from giant atomic ants (Them), to buff cyborgs (The Terminator), to rampaging 3D zombies (Resident Evil: Afterlife). So Angelenos take invasions from movie stars in stride. But this weekend marks an anniversary of an invasion you might not know about: L.A.'s first alien invasion. This...

The search for the bottom of the creature feature barrel continues with “Sand Sharks”, a film which explores the long pondered philosophical question as to what would happen if sharks could in fact swim through sand. Boldly tackling this controversial issue are director Mark Atkins (also responsible for the charming “Battle of Los Angeles”) and writers Cameron Larson (“Mysterious Island”, “Alligator X”) and Joe Benkis (“Shadow People”), with an intriguing cast of television stars and vaguely familiar genre faces that includes Corin Nemec (“Supernatural”), Brooke Hogan (“Brooke Knows Best”), Gina Holden (“Saw 3D”), Julie Berman (“General Hospital”), Nick Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”) and Vanessa Lee Evigan (“Journey To The Centre Of The Earth”). For the brave or curious, “Sand Sharks” hits region 2 DVD in January through Chelsea Films. The plot, such as it is, proudly follows the time honoured “Jaws” formula pretty much to the letter, kicking off with a...

Sand Sharks is directed by Mark Atkins (Battle of Los Angeles) and the screenplay is written by Cameron Larson. The film stars Gina Holden (Saw 3D, Final Destination 3), Vanessa Lee Evigan (Journey to the Center of the Earth), Eric Scott Woods (Dark Metropolis) and Corin Nemec (3-3-3), Julie Berman and Nick Hogan (Hulk Hogans son).

This has not been a good year for Los Angelino/extraterrestrial relations. First there was Battle: Los Angeles. Then The Asylum’s Battle of Los Angeles. Now there’s Alien Armageddon, which, not surprisingly, was originally titled Battleground Los Angeles.
On the same day that Cowboys & Aliens limps onto store shelves, another alien invasion movie featuring a cowboy battling aliens (judging by the cover art) will be touching down on DVD and Blu-ray via Phase 4 Films.
Starring Rochelle Vallese, Katharine MeEwan, Claudia Wells, Don Scribner, Marilyn Ghigliotti and DeeDee Bigelow, with a cameo by Virginia Hey, filmmaker Neil Johnson’s Alien Armageddon is an impressive looking low budget alien invasion effort about humanity’s last stand in the last remaining city on Earth – Los Angeles.
Have a look at the trailer. Seriously, have a look at it. Really damn impressive for low budget sci-fi movie.

Here is your early warning that The Asylum will be trying to capitalize on another blockbuster release. This time Darren Lynn Bousman's 11-11-11 is being clearly copied to swindle wayward buyers out of their hard earned dollars. The Asylum's doppelganger this time is 11/11/11 and unbelievably, they have another title copying Bousman's film called 11/1/11. Notice the removal of one digit here folks. All three films involve themes of a spiritual apocalypse, with The Asylum's version much lower budgeted.
This reviewer would love to interview someone at The Asylum to find out how well these copies perform financially. Apparently they are successful as this film production and distribution company has created dozens of films that copy blockbustes. To test your film knowledge, try to identify the films copied in the following titles: Battle of Los Angeles, Paranormal Entity, Transmorphers, Titanic II, The Terminators and The Day the Earth Stopped. How well did yo do?...

To test your film knowledge, try to identify the films copied in the following titles: Battle of Los Angeles, Paranormal Entity, Transmorphers, Titanic II, The Terminators and The Day the Earth Stopped. How well did yo do?...

There will be time-travelling, but not the kind featured in the original film on this supposed "true event." Syfy is working on its own version of "The Philadelphia Experiment," bringing in "Heroes" and "Star Trek: Generations" actor Malcolm McDowell to try and draw even more fans to the project. It will be a Saturday "original movie," a popular feature of Syfy that draws typically 2 million viewers or more. The film titles have ranged from the depths of B-Moviedom (like "Sharktopus") to those similar to other movie fans are familiar with ("Almighty Thor," "Battle of Los Angeles"). Using the original story of a project to cloak a warship during World War II (widely believed to be a hoax) as a starting block, this film moves into the 21st century where the military tries to duplicate ...

The Asylum is currently producing an apocalyptic world of zombies with actors Ving Rhames (Dawn of the Dead), Taryn Manning (The Speed of Thought) and Gary Weeks (Deadland). This latest from this mockbuster production company is called The Last Stand or simply Zombie Apocalypse. Fans of the post-apocalyptic zombie thriller can have a look at several photos for this feature below, which shows actor Ving Rhames golfing with zombies and other photos show the zombie make-up effects. This title is slated for a Fall release on DVD.

Amok alien monster loose in the woods on Earth, blue-skinned extraterrestrial female sent to stop it, retro robot sidekick, partying teens, bikini babes, buckets of blood: Aliens vs. Avatars already sounds better than Skyline.
A race of creatures known as the Scythe have become a plague in the universe. Cunning and powerful foes, they possess the ability to transform into anything from which they have consumed DNA. On a mission to stop the plague that her people unleashed, a beautiful alien named Ava has followed the Scythe to Earth.
Meanwhile, six college friends blowing off steam on a camping trip find themselves caught up in a cat and mouse hunt with the Scythe. Not knowing what to do or whom to trust, they struggle to protect themselves and keep it together. Reluctantly joining forces with Ava, they quickly learn what they are up against. Lots of films hitting Blu-Ray/DVD this week, including some very popular theatrical releases from earlier this year.
Battle: Los Angeles: The film stars Michelle Rodriquez, Aaron Eckhart, and Bridget Moynahan. It is based on the 1942 Battle of Los Angeles incident in which a fear enemy attacked later deemed a false alarm caused chaos in the city. DVD bonus features include behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Red Riding Hood: Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family's displeasure. The village is also dealing with the return of a wolf who has traumatized the villagers. DVD extras include an alternate ending, audition tapes, featurettes.

As if Battle: Los Angeles and Battle of Los Angeles (the obligatory Asylum mockbuster) weren’t enough for the poor citizens of Los Angeles, now comes an Alien Armageddon… Directed by Neil Johnson, the film stars Katherine McEwan, Don Scribner, Rochelle Vallese, Benjamin J. Cain Jr, Claudia Wells (of Back to the Future fame), Julia Parker, Will Tulin, Marilyn Ghigliotti (Clerks), Eric Nyenhuis, DeeDee Bigelow and a cameo by Virginia Hey (Road Warrior, Farscape).
When the world is invaded by an ancient race of aliens, the city of Los Angeles is fortified as an alien stronghold. The only way to fight is from within.
And hey, what’s not to like about a film that features aliens, monsters, gorgeous women, strong men, blood, guts, stuff blowing up and (of course) flesh-ball babies! Just check out the trailer and images we’ve been sent for the film:

There is another alien invasion film set in Los Angeles, which is set for a theatrical release July 6th. The title is Alien Armageddon and the synopsis sounds strangely like Battle: Los Angeles and also The Asylum's knock-off Battle of Los Angeles. Skyline could also be lumped in with these films and this reviewer is starting to get the sense that certain Los Angeles filmmakers want the City of Angels to burn to the ground. With the financial setbacks for S.E.T.I. (Search for Extraterrestrial Life), director Neil Johnson will have to wait a little longer for Los Angeles to crumble and burn under alien attack. For now, sci-fi fans with similar interests to Johnson, can have their wish fulfillment somewhat satisfied by visiting the Crest Theatre in Westwood July 6th, to watch Alien Armageddon on the big screen!
The short synopsis for Alien Armageddon is here:

A few weeks back we brought you the mind-blowing trailer for the zero budget superhero spoof The Amazing Bulk. While that film still seeks distribution, the filmmaker's next b-movie bonanza already has a trailer. It's not an April Fools Day prank. It's Aliens vs. Avatars, folks!
Director Lewis Schoenbrun was kind enough to pass along a lengthy four-page summary of the Aliens vs. Avatars plot that I narrowed down a bit. A clique of college age friends vacationing in a cabin in the woods become prey for an alien monster called the "Necrosis" that is capable of invisibility and shape-shifting into the form of anything it has clawed or consumed. Ava (Cassie Fliegel), a tall extraterrestrial female with blue skin from a civilization nearly wiped out by the "Necrosis", arrives to kill the space monster once and for all. She'll change her skin color to something more Caucasian to blend in with the humans,...

Yay! More killer shark movies! I’m personally an advocate of shark education and preservation, but after Jaws was shown to me as a kid, I love killer shark movies. Sand Sharks, a new film starring Brooke Hogan has a few new stills released (via Arrow) that shows the hottie being just that…and bloodied! Peep them:
Nice, huh? Directed by Battle of Los Angeles (from The Asylum) helmer, Mark Atkins, the film follows “prehistoric sand-dwelling sharks that are unleashed on the island of White Sands when an underwater earthquake cracks open a crater deep beneath the ocean surface. The most menacing beasts to ever rule the waters, now rule the sand; with their monster appetites they mercilessly munch on anything that crosses their path.”...

From American World Pictures comes Mark Atkins’ ambitious monster flick “Sand Sharks”, a film that the “Battle of Los Angeles” director describes as a “fish out of water” story. Get it? Sand sharks? Fish out of a water? Oh, boy. Then again, what did you expect from someone who used to work for The Asylum? All kidding aside, I’m always down for another cornball creature feature, particularly since this particular adventure stars “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose” alumni Corin Nemec in the lead role. Also on-board to battle these sandy beasts are Gina Holden (“Saw 3D”), Brooke Hogan (“Devour”), and a small collection of extremely pretty faces that are ready and waiting to meet their respective makers in a slew of interesting ways. Fantastic! No word yet as to when or where this one will see the light of day, though I wouldn’t hold your breath for a theatrical release.

What if you wanted to knock-off Jonathan Liebesman's Battle: Los Angeles and you only had 1% of the budget? Well, you would still have 700K and you could name your film something very similar like Battle of Los Angeles. This is what The Asylum is known for and 700K is not the budget of their latest.
In 2007, The Asylum tried to capitalize on the blockbuster I Am Legend, with I Am Omega. The result was a decent film (I Am Omega Review). The Asylum has copied other looming big budget films like Transformers, with Transmorphers and James Cameron's Titanic with Shane Van Dyke's forgettable Titanic II (A Titanic II Review). How will Battle of Los Angeles fare? That depends on movie watchers inability to decipher the good, Battle: Los Angeles from the arguably bad, Battle of Los Angeles. The first trailer for the latter is below, courtesy of Quiet Earth.

So there I was looking up Kenan Thompson’s history, for my post earlier today, and I came across this… a recently released DVD titled called Battle Of Los Angeles, not to be confused with the film currently in theaters, Battle: Los Angeles.
The connection here is that Kenan Thompson was once one half of Kenan & Kel, the late 90s comedy TV series, and a number of other big and small screen pairings. The “Kel” in that equation is Kel Mitchell; and Mitchell stars in the above straight-to-dvd release, Battle Of Los Angeles.
I’m betting it’s no coincidence that the film was released about 2 weeks before the mega-budgeted Battle: Los Angeles, if only to take advantage of the fact that the names and the themes are similar (both center on alien invasions, and take place in the same city, as indicated in the titles).
Co-starring alongside Kel Mitchell is Nia Peeples (remember her?...

Slowly but surely I'm finding out that my unabashed love for Battle: La is not a sentiment shared by my friends or colleagues. To them I offer proof that it could have been worse. It could have been this Battle of Los Angeles.
Synopsis:
In February 1942 Us forces engaged an unidentified flying object above Los Angeles. Now almost 70 years later, the alien invaders have returned.
To be fair, the beginning of this first trailer for the Asylum's Battle of Los Angeles actually seems not too bad. But then bad CGI explosions start and the Michelle Roderiguez impersonator take center stage.
For those if you with a strong stomach you can order the film here.
Enjoy!

Looks like another pretty dull week for DVD releases, saved only by an Adult Swim show and a couple of '80s classics on Blu-ray. Major studio titles include Yogi Bear (featuring the voices of Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake), The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, How Do You Know starring Reese Witherspoon, and the low budget alien invasion flick Skyline. If you're thinking that atrocious line-up can't possibly get any worse, you're wrong, because The Asylum's latest Dtv knock off Battle of Los Angeles is also out today. Fortunately, The Venture Brothers: Season 4, Part 2 is also hitting stores (along with The Complete Season 4 on Bd), plus the 25th Anniversary Edition of Stand By Me on Blu-ray and a high-def double feature of Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Goes to Prison. For $7.99, how can you say no? Check out the full release list after the jump.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Meskada" (2010)
Directed by Josh Sternfeld
Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment
When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.

Los Angeles has not seen this much action from aliens since Predator 2 and the beginning of the influx of "coyote" vehicles from Mexico. To keep the close encounters coming (at a reasonable price) Skyline starring Eric Balfour, Scottie Thompson, Brittany Daniel, Crystal Reed, Neil Hopkins, David Zayas and Donald Faison, finally comes home to Blu-ray and DVD this week.
We accidentally jumped the gun last week by talking up the release of Battle of Los Angeles. The Nia Peeples vehicle moves from SyFy channel to your home this week too, while the actual Battle: Los Angeles is still in the theaters.
The last title of note this week is also an alien invasion flick but from 30 years ago that is being released in glorious Blu-ray. Luckily these aliens had bigger ambitions than La.
