On May 31, 2024, “The Great Lillian Hall” premiered on HBO to predominantly positive reviews from critics. In the film, Oscar, Emmy and Tony winner Jessica Lange plays the titular character, a Broadway star battling dementia as she prepares for a big role on the Great White Way. The movie reunites Lange with her “American Horror Story” co-stars Kathy Bates and Lily Rabe, who play Lillian’s assistant and daughter, respectively. Pierce Brosnan and Jesse Williams also star.
The HBO movie is loosely inspired by actress Marian Seldes, who was the aunt of the film’s screenwriter, Elisabeth Seldes Annacone. Michael Cristofer directed the movie for HBO Films. Read our full review round-up below.

When Emmy voters get spooked, it’s often frighteningly good. Take a tour through our photo gallery below featuring 14 of the Emmys’ scariest acting wins in the history of the TV Academy.
Of course we had to include the various wins from “American Horror Story.” The horror franchise’s various installments have thus far reaped victories for Kathy Bates as a hate-spewing witch and James Cromwell as a deranged Nazi doctor, plus Jessica Lange makes our list twice as both a murderous neighbor and a malicious sorceress.
Also making the list twice is Michael Emerson, who scared the pants off us as a serial killer in “The Practice” before making our skin crawl as the mysterious leader of the Others on “Lost.”
Another multiple-murderer to make the cut is John Lithgow for his terrifying guest role in “Dexter”.
And let’s not forget sci-fi classic “The X-Files,” which brought trophies...

“I thought at least once, I should try a brand new play,” reveals Jessica Lange of her return to Broadway in “Mother Play.” The acclaimed actress won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Mary Tyrone in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” but she had only ever worked on the classics when it came to theater. So this new play by Paula Vogel provided the “perfect opportunity” to originate a role on stage and present audiences with something they had never seen. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Lange portrays Phyllis in the play, a woman based on Vogel’s own mother. We see Phyllis spend decades moving her children (played by Celia Keenan-Bolger and Jim Parsons) from one run down apartment to the next, struggling to offer them proper maternal care, and battling a drinking habit.

Jessica Lange may have hinted at her own retirement for years, but the legendary actress is actually playing it out onscreen with her latest film “The Great Lillian Hall.”
Lange stars as the titular (fictional) iconic stage actress who grapples with her own legacy amid a dementia diagnosis. Her daughter (Lily Rabe) struggles with separating her mother Lillian from her Broadway fame, while Kathy Bates, Jesse Williams, and Pierce Brosnan round out the cast.
“I have lived my entire life in a place that creates illusions,” Lange says in the trailer as Lillian. Yet upon her cognizant decline, what’s real anymore, anyway?
“The Great Lillian Hall” is directed by Michael Cristofer. The official synopsis reads: “As beloved Broadway star Lillian Hall (Lange) pours her heart, soul, and time into preparing for her next big role, she finds herself blindsided by confusion and forgetfulness. As a Virgo, I’m all about order. As a kid, I created my own card catalog for my collection of books, as if I were a library. I still alphabetize and catalog all of my music on Discogs. Even my Emmy notes are neatly organized by year, going all the way back to 1996.
That’s why I wasn’t happy in the late 1990s when hourlong shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Desperate Housewives” entered the Emmy comedy race. Hourlong dramedies are not comedies! No one ever called “All in the Family” — which had some deep, dark moments — a drama, and yet there were a couple of laughs in “Desperate Housewives” (which opened with a death!) and suddenly it’s a comedy?
Sadly, I lost this battle years ago. And as we know, the comedy race is really now a dramedy race. The frontrunner, FX’s “The Bear,” is famously...

Sarah Paulson is recalling an “outrageous” interaction she had with a fellow actor who watched her performance in a play.
During a Monday appearance on the Smartless podcast, with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, the American Horror Story star was asked if she would accept feedback from celebrities who come backstage to meet the cast after a theater show.
“I did do a play once. The last time I was on stage, I did a play called Talley’s Folly at the Roundabout, and the actress — and I’m going to say this, and I’m not going to ask you to cut this out, because I don’t fucking care — this actress came to the play. Her name is Trish Hawkins. ‘Hi, Trish! Hi, Trisha!’” Paulson said. “Trish Hawkins came to the play … am I going to get sued? I don’t care, because I think this is outrageous.

The new “God’s Not Dead” film follows the series’ protagonist, Rev. David Hill (played once again by David A.R. In 2019, Sandra Oh simultaneously received her seventh and eighth acting Emmy nominations for “Killing Eve” (drama lead) and “Saturday Night Live” (comedy guest). Five years later, her performance bid total is set to reach an even dozen thanks to her respective lead and supporting performances in the telefilm “Quiz Lady” and the limited series “The Sympathizer.” Earning TV academy recognition for these two roles would make her the eighth woman to compete for both possible limited program acting awards at once.
In “Quiz Lady,” which premiered on Hulu last November, Oh plays Jenny Yum, a vivacious yet reckless woman who reunites with her estranged younger sister (Awkwafina) to resolve their mother’s gambling debts. “The Sympathizer,” which began airing on HBO in April, features her in the role of Sofia Mori, a 1970s Japanese American secretary who becomes entangled with a communist spy (Hoa Xuande).

Showrunners are the creative visionaries of a series.
They might not be the original creators, but they cover all aspects of the creative elements, evolve the show's vision, and decide where the story and character arcs will go.
They run the writing rooms, head the development, hire writers, and ensure actors are kept happy and that the budget is not exceeded.
Series are usually a collective effort, with writers giving their thoughts, but showrunners have the final say and are essential.
Where would the industry be without people like Shonda Rhimes, Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), and Ryan Murphy?
It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.

James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name is the basis for Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks‘ “Shōgun,” and it makes for exquisite television. Set at the end of the 16th century in Japan, the FX limited series follows several factions in the five Regents all vying for control and power. Intricate world-building and political machinations combine to make “Shōgun” the next “Game of Thrones.” What the two shows also have in common is a collection of superb performances from their extensive casts. Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis lead the way in the show’s leading performances but several supporting players could also be up for an Emmy nomination, including Takehiro Hira.
Hira plays Ishido Kazunari, a former peasant who has now become a powerful bushō (a warlord). Kazunari takes charge of one of the five Regents and is the main rival of Sanada’s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

Jessica Lange is calling out modern Hollywood for not valuing the “creative process” of filmmaking.
The “Feud” actress told Vulture that “artistic impulse” is squashed by the “corporate profit motive,” much like Warner Bros. Discovery canning almost-completed films like “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme” for tax write-off purposes. Of that in particular, Lange said, “There should be a law against it.”
“We’re living in a corporate world and it certainly has rolled over into the film industry,” Lange said. “So much of the industry now is not about the creative process. Obviously, this is not across the board, but there are many instances where I feel like the artistic impulse is overwhelmed by the corporate profit motive.”
Lange instead cited international features for being more bold in their storytelling.

Jessica Lange spoke critically of present-day Hollywood during a recent interview with Vulture, saying “there should be a law against it” when the topic came up about Warner Bros. Discovery axing already-shot movies like “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme” for tax write-off purposes. This topic became a launching pad for some of Lange’s wider criticisms of today’s entertainment industry.
“We’re living in a corporate world and it certainly has rolled over into the film industry,” Lange said. “So much of the industry now is not about the creative process. Obviously, this is not across the board, but there are many instances where I feel like the artistic impulse is overwhelmed by the corporate profit motive. ‘AHS: Delicate’ concludes with one of ‘American Horror Story’s’ most disappointing finales that makes up its own rules, hammers in rote themes, and then turns to dust.
“When are they going to let us tell our own stories?”
A pregnancy brings genetic material together until it culminates into a person and American Horror Story: Delicate also tells a story where its success is dependent upon the season’s ability to tie all of its ideas together into a satisfying finale. Pregnancy stories are all about the ending and one’s enjoyment of “The Auteur” really comes down to what you want out of an American Horror Story finale. Anyone who’s watched the series has been burnt by past finales that are underbaked or overwrought. There are also only so many places that a season finale that begins with Anna in labor can go. Most pregnancy horror stories are...

Netflix has landed the television series “Calabasas,” TheWrap has learned. The series, which is executive produced by Kim Kardashian and her “American Horror Story” costar Emma Roberts, is based on Via Bleidner’s book “If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous By Now” and is set in the SoCal town most closely associated with the Kardashians.
Two major offers were on the table when Netflix closed out the deal on Friday, according to sources close to the story. The book follows the story of 16-year-old Via, a young Catholic girl whose life is changed after her family moves from the Midwest to Calabasas, California.
The series will also be produced by “Pretty Little Liars” creator I. Marlene King and Alexandra Milchan. King’s partner Lauren Wagner via Long Lake Media will also produce, as well as Belletrist Productions for Roberts, Karah Preiss and Matt Matruski.

The hit Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady” showcases Sandra Oh and Awkwafina by giving each a chance to play against type. They’re a pair of sisters forced to compete on a game show to pay off their mother’s gambling debts. Awkwafina is the quiet, reserved Anne while Oh featured is the wild and crazy Jenny. Oh delivers a pitch-perfect performance and critics showered her with praise.
Marya E. Gates (Roger Ebert) proclaimed: “The film works largely thanks to the irrepressible charm of star Sandra Oh… Oh, on the other hand, is clearly having a blast playing this hot mess. She nails her pratfalls and plays the comedy as broad as possible with aplomb. However, Oh can also find the hurt, love, and complexity beneath Jenny’s superfluous surface.”
Kristy Puchko (Mashable) observed: “From the moment she storms onscreen, Oh is game to go outrageous… Often mesmerizing for her electrifying screen presence,...

‘AHS: Delicate’ enters early labor with a fun, frenzied episode that finds the perfect tone and goes for broke as its water breaks.
“I’ll figure it out. Women always do.”
American Horror Story is no stranger to remixing real-life history with ludicrous, heightened Murphy-isms, whether it’s AHS: 1984’s incorporation of Richard Ramirez, AHS: Cult’s use of Valerie Solanas, or AHS: Coven’s prominent role for the Axeman of New Orleans. Accordingly, it’s very much par for the course for AHS: Delicate to riff on other pop culture touchstones and infinitely warp them to its wicked whims. That being said, it takes real guts to do a postmodern feminist version of Rosemary’s Baby and then actually put Mia Farrow – while she’s filming Rosemary’s Baby, no less – into the narrative. This is the type of gonzo bullshit that I want out of American Horror Story!

Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.
Tania Hussain (Collider) exclaimed: “While Awkwafina has shown audiences a whacky, often one-dimensional side in some of her roles like the sitcom ‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,’ she is able...

‘AHS: Delicate’ turns out its best episode of the season with a flashback-focused installment that recants Adeline’s brutal backstory.
“We don’t have to stay where we’re born…”
Hestia, the namesake of AHS: Delicate’s antepenultimate episode of the season, is the Greek goddess of the hearth, home, and hospitality. This may seem like a benign thing to celebrate, but what is a family without a proper home? A home is the safe support system that keeps a family secure. To take this one step further, what is a womb if not a baby’s first home before they’re thrust into the world? Hestia is regarded as a goddess who’s both soft and strong, which are extremes that are forced upon every mother, whether it’s Anna, Adeline, or even Ivy. It’s a fundamental dichotomy that very likely will be the key to Anna’s...

She truly is her mother’s daughter. A fashion model through and through, Kaia Gerber has often shown that she can turn any activity into a fashion moment. And by any activity, I mean even watching a celestial event unfold.
On Monday, Cindy Crawford’s 22-year-old daughter was beaming as she left the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” studios after promoting her new Apple TV show Palm Royale. She seemed to be headed to see the total solar eclipse, much like many other people in New York.
Looking excited, Gerber showed the awaiting crowd her blue Iso-approved solar eclipse glasses, all set to witness the rare phenomenon where the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun and casting a shadow on Earth.

Noah Cyrus’s relationship with Pinkus was kept under wraps until April 2023. Since then, the couple has announced their engagement and made several fashion-forward appearances at media events. Most recently, the 24-year-old singer and fashion designer went low-key with a date night at an LA Lakers basketball game. And by low-key, we mean Cyrus looked pretty unimpressed throughout the evening.

David Lynch is claiming Netflix didn’t want to greenlight his “wacky” animated feature, “Snootworld.”
The “Twin Peaks” and “Blue Velvet” auteur told Deadline that his long-awaited animated debut has been two decades in the process. Lynch co-wrote the script with “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “The Addams Family” scribe Caroline Thompson; the feature has a strict three act structure, with Lynch penning act two.
Lynch revealed that Netflix allegedly “rejected” the project most likely since “old fashioned fairytales are considered groaners.” IndieWire has reached out to Netflix.
“I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge,” Lynch told Deadline. “I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this so I presented it to Netflix in the last few months but they rejected it.

Disney merged with Fox in 2019. Since then, most of the more adult-oriented Fox shows and movies went onto Hulu while the more family-friendly offerings went onto Disney+. However, more recently, the streaming service merged with Hulu, and people subscribed to both can see everything on the app. This means there are some shows available that some parents remain concerned with.
One of the more controversial additions has shown up on the main screen as an option to advertise the Hulu merging, and parents are protesting.
Parents Not Happy About New Disney+ Addition
After the Fox acquisition, this brought in a lot of shows and movies that might not be what people think of when they consider the Mouse House. Movies like Alien and TV shows like Archer and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia found a home on Hulu. Now, fans can see these shows, and more, on the Disney+ streaming service.

If you’ve been anywhere near a television in the last couple of years, odds are you’re already familiar with Dominic Burgess. The British actor broke through in 2017’s “Feud: Bette and Joan” as actor Victor Buono, before popping up in a number of memorable appearances — playing everything from serial killer John Wayne Gacy in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” to an accident-prone man on “The Good Place” whose hideous red boots create an existential crisis for Chidi.
Most recently, the actor has been stealing scenes as Grayman, the stylist to the grande dames (including Kristen Wiig and Allison Janney) on Apple TV’s “Palm Royale” — and as Hamish Moss, a director on the rise on “American Horror Story: Delicate.” That is, he was on the rise before the April 3 episode, in which Moss met a gruesome death at the hands of Kim Kardashian’s devilish publicist.

With American Horror Story on an extended hiatus, the FX hit teased a kiss between Emma Roberts and co-star Kim Kardashian to promote the series’ big comeback.
Now that the first episode has aired, Roberts is speaking out about it.
Roberts appeared on The Tonight Show, starring Jimmy Fallon, on Wednesday night and wasted no time telling the host about the big scene.
Throughout the American Horror Story: Delicate, Kardashian’s Siobhan has seemingly posed a significant threat to Roberts’ Anna.
Despite being Anna’s publicist, Siobhan has been shown to have ulterior motives, and the footage for the second part of the season teased as much.
While the kiss got plenty of people talking, Roberts said it wasn’t as “intense” to film as it looked.

Like an old friend you barely remember, if you ever really knew them at all, American Horror Story returned on Wednesday with the second half of Delicate — which is also a good word to describe the impression this season is likely to leave on its viewers.
Part 2 kicked off with a bit of backstory for Emma Roberts’ Anna, and in true AHS fashion, it was a total bummer. A flashback to White Plains, N.Y. in 1988 introduced us to Anna’s mother (played by a Gummer, if ever we’ve seen one), who died from a pulmonary embolism shortly after she was born.
