A sweet if somewhat inconsequential entry into the annals of English comedy, Warren Fischer’s A Family Affair – no relation to the Nicole Kidman film set for release later in the year – makes the bold move of setting up a farce with tough economic realities and grief at its core. Set in an undisclosed rural location and populated by English television actors, it explores territory which will feel uncomfortably close to home for many viewers, but does so with a warmth and light-heartedness which hints at ways of coping and, perhaps, moving on.
Edward (Joe Wilkinson) has put everything into his dream hotel, a little island of tranquility which, with the aid of hippy guru Rhys (Colin Hoult), he markets as a spiritual retreat – but whilst they’re running naked yoga sessions in the garden, customers are running to review sites to complain about everything imaginable. I always like to give British comedy a go because, in amongst plenty of poor shows and films has been a whole lot of great stuff. British comedy often feels a little bit different from many other countries, so with A Family Affair and debut writer and director Warren Fischer, I was hoping for the new British comedy director to take the World by storm. The story goes like this:
“A cash-strapped hotel manager (Joe Wilkinson) is forced to stave off interest from wealthy buyers at a public auction whilst hosting his in-laws on their wedding anniversary.”
I was also glad to see Joe Wilkinson on the cast list, and he does indeed play one of the main roles as Edward. After previously enjoying his work on Him and Her, and Ricky Gervais’ Derek and After Life,...

With the release of MaXXXine less than two months away, Ti West is setting up his next project, which sounds like another helping of pure ’80s sleaze. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Zac Efron is reportedly in talks to star in Night Business, a series adaptation of the cult graphic novel by Benjamin Marra, which Ti West will direct.
A24 will produce the Night Business series with Nathaniel Halpern (Legion) writing the script and serving as showrunner. Here’s the logline: “In this 1980s-trash-culture homage where a knife-wielding killer is on the loose, committing extreme acts of violence on exotic dancers. Only one man has a will powerful enough to stop this psychopath: Johnny Timothy. But can Johnny mete out his vengeance before more innocent victims have to die? A nasty brew of power, passion, vigilantes, and dangerous men raining street justice down upon their enemies.” Zac Efron would play Johnny Timothy,...

Netflix has been dropping romcoms by the minute, and viewers are totally here for it, and the next in line is A Family Affair! With a theme reminiscent of that time when Michael Scott dated Pam’s mom in The Office, Netflix’s A Family Affair is delightfully unhinged with a hefty dash of sizzling chemistry. Starring Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman and former Disney heartthrob Zac Efron in a whirlwind — albeit slightly inappropriate — romance. A Family Affair also stars Joey King, who plays the mortified daughter whose mother dates her ex-boss. A Family Affair was initially scheduled to be

What will you ask the brilliant actor, author, cake decorator and star of new film A Family Affair?
Jane Asher has been on our screens for almost 73 years – her first role was aged five, in Mandy, and she turns 78 on 5 May. But it was aged 17 she really shot to big screen prominence, opposite Vincent Pryce in The Masque of the Red Death.
Then, two years later, in 1966, came Alfie, in which she plays a hitchhiker who becomes the latest in Michael Caine’s litany of conquests; in 1970 she was the lead in Jerzy Skolimowski’s suburban psychodrama Deep End.

Joey King Flaunts Inner Sideboob in Black Cutout David Koma Dress at 49th AFI Life Achievement Award
Joey King’s attendance at this year’s AFI Life Achievement Award Gala honoring Nicole Kidman made perfect sense, as the two are co-starring in the upcoming Netflix movie A Family Affair.

What didn’t quite make sense was her choice of ensemble. Although she looked amazing, I thought the dress was too provocative for the event, and it seemed like she was overshadowing the night’s honoree.
I must admit I like the dress a lot; it’s not your typical red-carpet black dress, and I think it captures Joey King’s daringly feminine yet edgy sense of style. The thing is, I find it inappropriate for the occasion.

"Today better go off without a hitch." Strike Media has revealed an official trailer for a British indie comedy titled A Family Affair, made by filmmaker Warren Fischer who coms from South Africa. This is set to debut in the UK first on VOD this May, after originally opening on VOD in South Africa back in February this year. It's only 72 minutes! A financially distressed guest house manager is forced to stave off interest from wealthy buyers at a public auction while hosting his in-laws for their wedding anniversary and his own difficult father on the same weekend. Starring Joe Wilkinson, Laura Aikman, and Jane Asher. "On a superficial level, the film is a farcical romp but at its core, this is a story about love, loss, reconciliation and the complexities of family." There's still no US release set yet, though it'll probably end up on VOD at some point this year.

Joey King has nothing against method acting – it’s just not for her.
Especially for projects like her latest, the Holocaust series “We Were the Lucky Ones.”
Based on Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel of her family’s fight to survive the Holocaust, Logan Lerman stars as Hunter’s grandfather Addy alongside King as his younger sister Halina. Rounding out the cast are Sam Woolf, Robin Weigart, Lior Ashkenazi, Hadas Yaron, Amit Rahav and Eva Feiler.
“I think anyone who is a method actor is truly so brave and amazing, but I’m personally not a method actor,” King tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “And when shooting a show like this, I just don’t know how I could be because having those moments of release in between setups and in between takes with your friends [is needed].”

For a while, it seemed as though Netflix’s sole focus was to become the first streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. With the releases of “Maestro,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” “Roma,” “Mudbound,” “Beasts of No Nation,” and others, many in entertainment felt that the streaming service that disrupted the entire industry was trying to backdoor its way into the good graces of Hollywood by releasing prestige pictures in theaters. Then, as the entire movie theater business was still trying to get back on its feet following the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns, Netflix put “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” into theaters — for an admittedly limited amount of time. However, it appears that the days of the world’s largest streamer making massive efforts to release its films in cinemas might be over.

Netflix has emerged victorious in a bidding war for “The Fifth Wheel,” a comedy starring Kim Kardashian.
Several major players, including theatrical distributors and streamers, were competing for the film, according to Deadline, which first reported news of the sale. But two of the five companies backed out at the last minute before Kardashian and co-writers Paula Pell and Janine Brito signed with Netflix on the dotted line.
Pell, a “Saturday Night Live” alum, is producing “The Fifth Wheel” with Kardashian. The logline is under wraps, but Kardashian is playing the eponymous “fifth wheel” alongside a female ensemble cast. Her co-stars have not been announced.

Updated with new date: The 49th AFI Life Achievement Award honoring Nicole Kidman is now set for April 27, 2024 at the Dolby Theater, with the new date coming after AFI postponed the annual event earlier this summer because of the WGA strike.
Since the original postponement in May, SAG-AFTRA also went out on strike. The writers strike ended September 27 and the actors guild reached a tentative agreement last week.
The AFI Board of Trustees established the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1973.
Previously, May 8: Oscar winner Nicole Kidman will have to wait a little longer to receive her Life Achievement Award tribute from AFI, as the ceremony planned for June 10 has been postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing writers strike.
“For nearly half a century, the AFI Life Achievement Award has convened artists and audiences in celebration of excellence in the art form,” said a spokesperson for the American Film Institute.

At 5’2, Mickey Rooney may have been small in stature, but he had a huge personality and was one of the biggest stars in the heyday of the Golden Era of Hollywood. He had one of the longest careers of any entertainer, with a body of work that spans nine decades in the industry, including vaudeville, films, television, radio and the stage.
Rooney was born Joe Yule, Jr. on September 23, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York. At 17 months old, he made his stage debut in his parent’s vaudeville act, and made his motion picture debut in 1926. In 1927, he starred in the first of several short films in the “Mickey Maguire” series, and adopted the stage name “Mickey Rooney.” He made 78 of these comedies, and also received great notices in films such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1935). For its first-ever upfronts presentation, Netflix took a page out of broadcast networks’ traditional playbook and boasted about not just what series it has launching in the coming months, or even through the end of the year, but specifically calling out its fall 2023 slate.
A staple of upfronts week — though not as much lately, first because of the Covid-19 pandemic and now because of the writers strike — has been the unveiling of ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox’s fall lineups. This was done so advertisers knew what they were buying ads against and therefore what demos and audience size it would be most likely to reach by promoting products during those programs.
For Netflix, which doesn’t follow the September-to-May season that broadcast still lives by but now has an ad-supported tier it needs to supply with commercials, to take this approach is potentially a move for the streamer to...

Don’t expect Netflix to follow the lead of its rivals and embrace a traditional theatrical model as Amazon and Apple are doing.
“The film division is doing great,” Ted Sarandos said during an earnings call Tuesday. “Driving folks to a theater is just not our business. Having big new desirable content drives value for our members and drives value for our business. There are no major changes in play.”
He also said that while it is tempting to make a comparison between services, those other services “simply” don’t have the same scale and reach.
The big streamers have historically focused on making their original movies available quickly to subscribers, versus allowing a lengthy berth in cinemas. Apple Original Films and Amazon Studios are now changing course in dramatic fashion. But not Netflix.
To be sure, Netflix for years has given many of its original movies — and particularly awards...
