Keshet Studios, the U.S. scripted arm of Keshet International, has acquired the U.S. remake rights to the French romantic fantasy thriller series “Vortex” from France TV Distribution.
Based on an original concept by Franck Thilliez, “Vortex” centers on a police captain who stumbles upon a time warp while examining a VR crime scene. He realizes that he can communicate with his lost love, just before her death in 1998. Determined to alter her fate and prevent her murder, Ludovic risks everything, including his life with his new family.
The deal, negotiated by Keshet Studios and Michelle Palant, international sales manager at France TV Distribution, marks Keshet Studos’ first remake deal for a French show.
“Within the first few minutes of watching ‘Vortex,’ I knew this had to be Keshet Studios’ first French adaption for the U.S.,” said Heather Brewster, Keshet Studios’ SVP of scripted. “A deeply emotional, inventive,...

Paramount+’s spy thriller The Department is starting to fill out its ranks.
The drama series, based on the French hit Le Bureau des Legendes, has tapped Joe Wright (Atonement, 2005’s Pride & Prejudice) as director of the first two episodes and Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (Ford v. Ferrari, Edge of Tomorrow) to write all 10 installments. The series, which comes from Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, is aiming for a premiere date later this year on Paramount+ With Showtime.
The Department snagged a straight-to-series order in February 2023 at Showtime (shortly after Paramount Global announced the premium cabler would effectively be folded into Paramount+). At the time, George Clooney was announced as director, but he has ceded those duties to Wright. Clooney and producing partner Grant Heslov remain executive producers of the series, via their Smokehouse Pictures.

The inevitable M&a question came toward the end of Paramount Global’s hourlong conference call with Wall Street analysts on Wednesday — a session that undoubtedly would have been more contentious for Paramount leaders if they hadn’t started out by serving up sacrifices for the greater good of free cash flow and profit.
Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish waved off the inquiry from Bank of America Merrill Lynch media analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich about the tidal wave of media speculation about suitors coming (and going) for the company with a breezy “We’re always looking for ways to create shareholder value.” But it was clear from the earlier commentary and business updates from Bakish and chief financial officer Naveen Chopra that they are charting a course for this year and next to take streamer Paramount+ to the promised land of profitability and keeps the company entact as a standalone entity.

After the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year, and with every streaming service now laser-focused on profitability, Hollywood has been keeping a close watch on efforts to adjust content spend, either reducing spend overall, or finding ways to change the cost structure.
At Paramount, reducing that programming spend has now become a top corporate priority, according to CEO Bob Bakish and CFO Naveen Chopra, speaking on the company’s earnings call Wednesday.
“As we move into 2024, we’re focused on producing content more efficiently and magnifying the impact of our slate,” Bakish told analysts.
“2023 presented an opportunity to experiment with alternative lower-cost entertainment programming across our linear networks,” Chopra added, referencing the moves made by the company at CBS and its other networks during the strikes. “The performance we saw gives us confidence we can continue to reduce cost going forward while also delivering a consistent volume of high quality content.

Having returned from an acting break in a big way last year via Next Goal Wins and David Fincher's The Killer, Michael Fassbender is headed for TV. He's in talks to star in George Clooney's next stab at the small screen, espionage drama The Department.
If he makes a deal, Fassbender will lead the series, adapted by Eric Rochant from his show The Bureau, which was a big hit when it ran in France between 2015 and 2020, and starred Mathieu Kassovitz.
Assuming it keeps to the storyline of the original, the series would follow a spy who is great at his job, but has trouble when he returns home from a years-long mission. Caught between agencies and an illicit affair he had while pretending to be someone else, he struggles to let go of false personalities. The show will likely also touch on geopolitical themes and psychological issues.

Showtime, one of the most trusted premium cable channels this side of HBO, is rebranding. The channel, owned by Paramount Global, is officially set to relaunch with a new name in January 2024. Get ready for the Paramount+ with Showtime era. This is a title that the company had already been leaning into on the streaming side, but now the long-standing cable channel is taking on the new branding as well. For better or worse, it's a corporate synergy move.
On January 8, 2024, Showtime will officially rebrand as Paramount+ with Showtime, so anyone who subscribes to the channel will need to be aware of the title change. That means the cable channel will have the same name as the company's top-tier streaming offering. Paramount+ also has an "essential" plan with ads that does not feature Showtime's original series. Showtime’s linear network will officially be rebranded to Paramount+ with Showtime on January 8.
The linear version of Paramount+ with Showtime will feature new Showtime titles, including “A Gentleman in Moscow,” George Clooney’s “The Department” and “The Women in the Wall” as well as “Fellow Travelers,” “The Chi,” “The Curse,” “Yellowjackets,” and “Your Honor,” among others.
It will also include access to Paramount+ original series including “Sexy Beast,” the first and upcoming second season of “Halo,” seasons 1 and 2 of “Mayor of Kingstown,” seasons 1 through 4 of “Star Trek: Discovery,” season 1 of “Wolf Pack” and more.
The latest change comes after Showtime’s streaming offering was integrated into Paramount+ in June. The Paramount+ with Showtime streaming tier costs $11.99 per month, while the cheaper, ad-supported Essentials tier, which does not include Showtime, costs $5.99 per month.

As of Jan. 8, 2024, Paramount Global will rebrand the linear Showtime cable network as Paramount+ With Showtime — the same name as the company’s top-tier streaming package. With the name change, the premium cable network will add select Paramount+ original series.
Confusingly, however, some subscribers of the linear Showtime channel will not have access to the Paramount+ With Showtime streaming plan. Instead, Paramount+ With Showtime cable subscribers will be able to access programming online via the authenticated streaming apps of pay-tv partners. Emily Atef, who is presenting her latest film, “Someday We’ll Tell Each Other Everything,” in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, just moved to Paris to direct “La Maison,” a series depicting a fictional family-owned French luxury fashion empire.
While discussing “Someday We’ll Tell Each Other Everything” ahead of its world premiere, Atef told Variety that “La Maison” will be filled with a lot of drama and tragicomedy. “It’s very Shakespearean. There’s so much beauty and luxury with old mansions in Brittany, Parisian ‘hotel particuliers,’ and then behind all that there’s so much human poverty, and you see them ripping each other appart for power,” said Atef, who will direct the pilot and three more episodes.
The series was created and penned by Jose Caltagirone (“Les Combattantes”) and Valentine Milville (“The Bureau”), and will star a high-profile French ensemble cast, including Lambert Wilson (“Benedetta”), Carole Bouquet (“En Therapie...

‘The Conners': Will George Clooney’s Booker Return and Shake Up Jackie’s Marriage? (Exclusive Video)
Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie on “The Conners” finally has the marriage to a stable guy who adores her. But there is one man from her past that, if he returned to Lanford, could pose a serious threat to her happily ever after. That man is her former boss and boyfriend Booker Brooks played in 1988 by a then little-known actor named George Clooney.
“Neville would be absolutely furious to see an old boyfriend [of Jackie’s] who looks like that,” showrunner Bruce Helford tells TheWrap. “He’s an insecure guy to begin with.”
On Wednesday night’s episode of “The Conners,” Jackie’s moral fortitude is put to the test when Becky takes a spill at The Lunchbox, and Neville points out that what she is doing is wrong. (Check out the exclusive clip at the top.) As far as significant others go, Neville has been rock-solid. But as fans of the Og “Roseanne” remember from its first season,...

MTV Entertainment Studios and Showtime’s creative leadership teams are merging, with four more executives being laid off as the latter company’s upcoming consolidation with Paramount+ looms. Nina L. Diaz and Keith Cox will take on expanded roles as chief creative officer/president of content and president of scripted for Showtime/Mtves, respectively, reporting to Chris McCarthy.
News of the restructuring quickly follows McCarthy’s announcement earlier on Monday that Showtime co-presidents of entertainment Gary Levine and Jana Winograde’s roles would be eliminated; the former executive will take on a senior creative advisor role at the cable-streamer, while Winograde was let go as her position was consolidated. The shake-ups are a result of the larger ramifications of Showtime’s upcoming integration with Paramount+ later this year.
