When Arte Germany CEO Wolfgang Bergmann approached Toronto director Larry Weinstein in January 2023 about making a documentary to mark the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the filmmaker didn’t exactly break into a chorus of “Ode to Joy.”
Nor could he have anticipated that his film “Beethoven’s Nine: Ode to Humanity,” which premieres in Toronto at Hot Docs on April 28, would be not only his first to break the fourth wall but also his most personal to date.
A prolific director-producer since his early years with Canada’s Rhombus Films, Weinstein has made numerous acclaimed creative music docs, including “Beethoven’s Hair,” a 2005 forensic adventure exploring the composer’s physical and psychic woes. The prospect of making a second Beethoven film, especially with several “Ninth films” already in circulation, seemed dim.
“There wasn’t a lot of time to come up with a big idea,” he told Variety in early April.

When The Jonas Brothers open their show in Brisbane by walking out to your animated kid show’s theme tune, then that theme song and that show have done way more than entertain some 6-year-olds. The show in question, “Bluey,” has been a phenomenon for a while — it’s approved by the kids of “Abbott Elementary” as well as millions worldwide — and the music by composer Joff Bush and a coterie of talented collaborators has fueled two albums and untold instances of “Dance Mode.”
Music has always anchored the wordless sequences where “Bluey” reaches its most poignant heights — whether gently cribbing from Gustav Holst as younger sister Bingo swims past the planets in her dream in “Sleepy Time” or ever-so-slightly tweaking a recurring theme as Rusty walks off the cricket pitch in “Cricket” and high fives his future self as that Rusty steps up to a much bigger stage. But the latest,...

Billy Joel‘s Madison Square Garden (Msg) concerts are coming to an end, but there’s still time to see him at the famous New York City arena.
The New York local first began performing for Msg in 2014 and, in October, started the countdown to his last ten shows. The “Uptown Girl” singer currently holds the record for most appearances at Msg.
“Madison Square Garden is the center of the universe as far as I’m concerned,” Joel is known to have said. “It has the best acoustics, the best audiences, the best reputation, and the best history of great artists who have played there. It is the iconic, holy temple of rock and roll for most touring acts and, being a New Yorker, it holds a special significance to me.”

The countdown to Billy Joel’s last Madison Square Garden concert has begun.
On October 20, the first of Joel’s last ten concerts at Msg kicked off to a nostalgic start as he sang his top hits like “Uptown Girl” and “Piano Man” throughout the show. That Friday, he told his fans he had “bad news” and “good news.”
“The bad news is I don’t have any new songs for you,” he said during the concert. “The good news is you don’t have to sit through songs you didn’t know that you don’t want to hear in the first place.”
Since 2014, the Grammy singer has played one show at Msg every month. The 74-year-old currently holds the most appearances at Msg and is planning to end at 150 shows next year.

Since 2007’s Sky Blue Sky, Wilco has settled into a more straightforward musical style defined by stripped-back, acoustic instrumentation and Jeff Tweedy’s confessional songwriting. The band’s latest, Cousin, seeks to fold Tweedy and company’s past into their present, exploring a more experimental and messy sound than their other recent releases.
This is due in no small part to Cate Le Bon’s varied production style. Cousin opens with the dense “Infinite Surprise,” whose main melodic hook is buried within layers of guitars, feedback, synths, and cacophonous strings. Tweedy’s vocals sound frailer than usual, almost frightened, which complements the track’s unsettling atmosphere. It’s perhaps the grandest opening statement to any Wilco album since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’s “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.”

When Alfred Hitchcock fired the composer behind “Vertigo” and “Psycho” over creative differences during the production of “Torn Curtain” in May 1966, it was clear that film music was changing. Although Bernard Herrmann’s theremin-laden score for “The Day the Earth Stood Still” had changed the game, his rugged determination not to succumb to rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, or (God forbid) “theme tune” scores that were quickly becoming all the rage in Hollywood made him an enemy of serial pragmatist Hitchcock. They never worked together again.
Three months later, The Beatles released “Revolver,” with what The Village Voice called a “bent and pulverised sound” — and pop music had gone electronic. Amid times a-changin’, Herrmann dug his heels in. His final score a decade later, for “Taxi Driver,” is as classic as they come.
When the synthesizer again altered the sound of film music in the 1980s, Herrmann’s fingerprints were, ironically,...

Xavier Henry-Rashid’s London-based sales agency Film Republic has closed deals for multiple territories on “F*cking Bornholm,” a tart comedy of social discomfort. The film had its international premiere in the main competition section of Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where it won the Europa Cinemas Label award.
In his review, Variety’s Guy Lodge commented that Polish writer-director Anna Kazejak‘s “precise, piquant film deserves wider festival exposure and discerning distributor interest.” It has now been acquired by Iceland’s Bio Paradis, Arsenal for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Lithuania’s Garsas, Slovenia’s Rtv, Israel’s Yes and Sweden’s Lucky Dogs. The international trailer has its debut below.
In the film, two couples with kids go away for a short holiday on the Danish island of Bornholm. Each person has different goals and expectations, and each one of them and their relationships will be tested.

Gary Oldman is one of the greatest film actors of all time. His versatility is so established now that there are internet memes about his uncanny ability to just simply vanish into a role. No other actor could convincingly play real-life figures as diverse as Lee Harvey Oswald and Winston Churchill, let alone such contrasting literary characters as Dracula and George Smiley. It's this versatility that has led to his success and longevity as an actor; he can play the hero, the villain, a supporting role, or a mere cameo, and never gives a part anything less than his all, whether he's playing Beethoven or a CGI peacock.
It's true that he displayed a propensity for playing villains in outlandish science fiction romps like "The Fifth Element," popcorn actioners like "Air Force One," or serial killer thrillers like "Hannibal." However, more recently he has received long overdue recognition for his...

Update, writethru: With an estimated 58.2 of the vote, Emmanuel Macron has been reelected as President of France, defeating extreme right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen who amassed 41.8. Macron now becomes the eighth French incumbent to win a second term.
Coming into today’s final round of the election, independent centrist Macron was leading in the polls, but throughout her campaign, Le Pen had gained momentum compared to the first time the two faced off in 2017. Today marked the second runoff between candidates from parties other than the traditional left and right.
Voter abstention today was estimated at 28.7, according to media reports. This is higher than in 2017, and is also more than the first round of voting two weeks ago. However, it is not a record breaker.

Despite all the high-tech tricks, political posturing and pyrotechnics, the best part of the Closing Ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics proved to be the athletes.
Competing the past two weeks amidst rising international tensions, pandemic quarantines and with a heavy-handed host, the participants injected a bit of fun this morning into the tightly scripted affair. Following the traditional flag waving parade of nations into the reasonably full Bird’s Nest, American flag-bearer, Elana Meyers Taylor and her fellow masked team members from around the globe let off some stream cavorting on the giant stadium’s floor to a loop of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy” over the protests of Chinese officials who repeatedly asked everyone to take their seats.
This year’s Winter Olympics was unique in many ways, but it may not be a bad idea for future games to let the actual athletes rule the roost more often.

Since the first Oscar for Best Actress was presented to Janet Gaynor at the 1929 ceremony, 77 different women have heard their names called on the big night, 14 of whom have won more than once. In 1982, Katharine Hepburn became the first, and to date only, individual to win four acting Oscars, all in the leading category. She held the record for most competitive acting nominations (12) from 1982 until Meryl Streep tied her in 2000, and then surpassed her in 2003. Streep currently holds the record for acting nominations with 21, 17 as a lead and four in supporting. However, it’s one of her contemporaries who is right behind Hepburn for most wins for Best Actress.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. Using Leonard Bernstein’s own voice, collected from his myriad interviews throughout his life, as well as personal letters, many of which were published in the 2013 book “The Leonard Bernstein Letters,” Douglas Tirola’s “Bernstein’s Wall” works as both a broad overview of the famous conductor’s life, as well as a deep dive into his political activism. Framed around Bernstein’s famous 1989 “Ode to Freedom” concert that coincided with the Fall of Berlin Wall – and saw Bernstein change Schiller’s “Ode to Joy” to reflect the word “Freedom” – Tirola’s documentary allows Bernstein to create a political bildungsroman, as he talks through his entangled interests of artistic creation and social change.

Five competitive local titles have announced as of Monday that they will be vying for box office supremacy in China over the May 1 Labor Day weekend, a public holiday.
They include a long-anticipated video game adaptation, an omnibus pandemic film helmed by three different female big shots from China, Hong Kong and the U.S., a sleek Aaron Kwok-starring thriller, a TV series adaptation and the first title from helmer Li Yu not to star the now-disgraced Fan Bingbing in 14 years.
Their sales will be worth tracking, as holiday periods tend to be the most money-making in the world’s largest film market, where the February Chinese New Year box office set world records with an impressive $1.2 billion in sales in just six days.

Elisabeth Röhm’s new Lifetime movie “Girl in the Basement” is “a call to action about abuse on a very significant level,” the director told TheWrap.
The film stars Judd Nelson as a father who locks his daughter (played by Stefanie Scott) in the basement for 20 years, raping and assaulting her, and even fathering multiple children with her. Meanwhile, her mom and sister live upstairs and believe she ran away to start a new life away from them.
To many, this story might ring a bell. In 2008, Elisabeth Fritzl told Austrian police she had been held captive by her father for 24 years, which resulted in the birth of seven children who remained in captivity with her. While “Girl in the Basement” takes elements from the Fritzl case, Röhm said there were actual multiple stories that inspired the screenplay for her movie.

Jeff Tweedy has shared two new songs, “Guess Again” and “Love Is the King,” from his upcoming solo album, Love Is the King, out October 23rd via dBpm Records.
In a statement Tweedy said the album came about at the start of the Covid-19 lockdown when he began “writing country songs to console myself. Folk and country type forms being the shapes that come most easily to me in a comforting way.”

Fox Corp.’s Tubi is widening the streaming audience for The Joy of Painting, the hushed classic hosted by the late Bob Ross.
Thirty of 31 seasons, totaling almost 400 episodes, will be on Tubi by the end of the month. The first season of the show, which launched in 1983, is not part of the launch.
Cinedigm’s Docurama Channel, which is already on Tubi, will feature the Painting episodes. All 31 seasons of the show already are on YouTube, and Hulu and Amazon also have select seasons for subscription streaming. Cinedigm earlier this year created a Ross-branded streaming channel, which started out on Samsung smart-TVs.
In 1983, Ross and partners Annette and Walt Kowalski debuted Joy on public television, making 400-plus episodes through 1994. Standing before the camera in a locked-off shot, Ross takes viewers through the process of painting landscape scenes, describing his color choices and brush strokes in a calm, even and encouraging tone.

Before production on Jimmy Kimmel Live was shut down due to coronavirus, the late-night show had scheduled Wilco to perform. Since that could no longer take place, Kimmel tapped singer and guitarist Jeff Tweedy to virtually perform his song “Evergreen.”
Tweedy opted to showcase the song, which comes off Tweedy’s 2019 solo effort Warmer, from his bathroom with the help of his two sons, Sam and Spencer. Titled “Live From the Lavatory,” the segment is ambient and lovely, especially as Tweedy’s kids join in on the harmonies.

Wilco delivered a tender rendition of their cautionary love song “Love Is Everywhere (Beware)” on Late Night With Seth Meyers Monday.
The performance found the band in fine form as guitarist Nels Cline laced bright finger-tapped licks over the song’s soothing country rock sway. “Right now, right now/Love is everywhere,” frontman Jeff Tweedy sang, “Right now, I’m frightened how/Love is here, beware.”
“Love Is Everywhere (Beware)” appears on Wilco’s most recent album, Ode to Joy, which was released in October and marked the band’s first LP since 2016’s Schmilco.

After three Jeff Tweedy solo records and a memoir, Wilco’s first album since 2016 arrives like a reunion. It sounds like one too: simple, straightforward songs, most with acoustic guitar at the core, other melodic tendrils and rhythms and harmonic drones curling up like ivy, a long-running conversation being picked up, slow but sure. The sound recalls Sky Blue Sky, the very first album by the band’s current lineup, and the spirit definitely feels informed by its bandleader’s recent path: Tweedy’s deep dive into Tweedy. These are all positives.

It’s been two and a half years since Sherlock was on our screens, and ever since we’ve been told much the same thing from those involved with the show: don’t expect any more for a while. As time has gone on, we’ve understood that they really mean that. In fact, the latest word on the series’ future comes from Doctor Watson himself, Martin Freeman, who thinks that a fifth season shouldn’t happen unless it’s “really, really special.”
While speaking with Collider to promote his new movie Ode to Joy, Freeman was asked if there’d been any recent discussions between the cast and the crew about Sherlock season 5. The actor admitted that there hadn’t been due to how busy everyone is, and also explained the following:

We’ve still got a whole lot of time to find out what Marvel has planned for Black Panther 2, as fans were quick to notice that the highly-anticipated sequel was left out of the studio’s Phase 4 slate at San Diego Comic-Con, but given that Ryan Coogler’s first film made $1.3 billion worldwide, a return to Wakanda’s pretty much guaranteed. And apparently when it happens, Martin Freeman’s CIA agent Everett Ross will be tagging along again for the ride.

Contrary to popular belief that insists upon their demise, first-rate romantic comedies are still alive and well. Sadly, Jason Winer’s perplexing farce “Ode to Joy” — on the misadventures of a tedious male lead with a self-sabotaging biology that opposes happiness — makes it harder than ever to dispute the mourners of the supposedly vanished genre. Humorless to a paralyzing extent, this joyless effort (developed under the title “The Pursuit of Unhappiness”) illustrates how a bad-on-paper idea can turn into something cringe-inducing onscreen. It also reminds that pulling off a smart, intoxicating happily-ever-after tale with sexual chemistry, refined contemporary jokes and lovably quirky sidekicks (à la “The Big Sick” or “Crazy Rich Asians”) is much tougher than we often imagine.
Inspired by a true story featured on the “This American Life” podcast, the labored romp follows the Brooklyn librarian Charlie, played by a deliberately monotonous Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit”) sans an emotional range.

Jason Winer’s Ode to Joy has a typical romantic comedy setup: man meets woman, they fall in love, a complication arises to drive them apart, they ultimately reconcile, cue happy ending. Only this time the obstacle to true love isn’t the usual harpy girlfriend or asshole boyfriend who are obviously wrong for the leads, but an actual sickness. Charlie (Martin Freeman) suffers from cataplexy, a symptom of narcolepsy that causes him muscle weakness and paralysis whenever he experiences strong emotions, such as joy. It basically means that Charlie has a perpetual black cloud over his head, since he can’t even look at a cute dog in the street without falling over himself. His self-made boring life takes a turn when he meets and falls for...
