Patricia Clarkson in Karlovy Vary: Indy films “keep our industry on its toes.” Photo: Film Servis Karlovy Vary
American Indy stalwart Patricia Clarkson tonight (6 July) received a Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema during the closing prize-giving ceremony of the 54th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
After establishing herself as a gifted character actress, Clarkson made the leap to leading lady, fuelling a long and varied career in film, television and theatre. In Karlovy Vary, she presented Learning To Drive, a feel-good drama directed by Isabel Coixet.
She believes that indie cinema is "the blood, heart and soul of our industry. As you see, many indy films go on to win the Academy Awards. They keep our industry on its toes, they remind us where we should be."
A New Orleans native, Clarkson graduated from Yale drama school before honing her skills on stage in New York.

Isabel Coixet's The Bookshop, loosely based on the novel by Penelope Fitzgerald and starring Emily Mortimer, Bill Nighy and Patricia Clarkson (who starred in Learning To Drive with Ben Kingsley) is dedicated to John Berger. Isabel also dedicated her 2005 film The Secret Life of Words, starring Sarah Polley and Tim Robbins, to Berger. In 2010, Isabel created From I to J an audio-installation of Berger's letters in From A to X at Casa Encendida in Madrid with readings from Tilda Swinton, Penélope Cruz, Isabelle Huppert, Monica Bellucci, Sophie Calle, Maria de Medeiros, Clarkson, and Polley.

Opening on August 24 is director Isabel Coixet’s The Bookshop. The film will debut in St. Louis on August 31.
England, 1959. Free-spirited widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open a bookshop in a conservative East Anglian coastal town. While bringing about a surprising cultural awakening through works by Ray Bradbury and Vladimir Nabokov, she earns the polite but ruthless opposition of a local grand dame (Patricia Clarkson) and the support and affection of a reclusive book loving widower (Bill Nighy).
As Florence’s obstacles amass and bear suspicious signs of a local power struggle, she is forced to ask: is there a place for a bookshop in a town that may not want one?
Based on Penelope Fitzgerald’s acclaimed novel and directed by Isabel Coixet (Learning to Drive), The Bookshop is an elegant yet incisive rendering of personal resolve, tested in the battle for the soul of a community.

As evidenced from the first rate drama Learning to Drive, director Isabel Coixet knows how to craft finely tuned and subtly evocative drams. One hopes she strikes a similar chord with The Bookshop, a 1959 tale about Florence Green (Emily Mortimer), a widow who opens a bookshop in a conservative, English coastal town.

"You make me believe once more in things I thought forgotten..." Greenwich Entertainment has released an official Us trailer for this lovely book-lovers film The Bookshop, the latest feature from Catalan filmmaker Isabel Coixet. This had a major premiere at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, but it was rather poorly received, and hasn't been highly regarded by many critics unfortunately. The Bookshop stars Emily Mortimer as an independent woman living in England in 1959 who fights to keep a bookshop open and running in a small town that doesn't really seem to need one. The full supporting cast includes Bill Nighy, Patricia Clarkson, Hunter Tremayne, Honor Kneafsey, James Lance, and Reg Wilson. It's described as "an elegant yet incisive rendering of personal resolve, tested in the battle for the soul of a community." This will probably connect most with die-hard book lovers. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for...

When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 37, and his brother, Daniel, 33, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures two summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical about its prospects. When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 37, and his brother, Daniel, 33, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures two summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical about its prospects. Few summer 2016 releases have grabbed more advance attention that Sony’s female “Ghostbusters” reboot. During this feast-or-famine summer, its modest initial performance is far from great, but mainly positive.
For one thing, “Ghostbusters” failed to unseat top-grossing animated film “The Secret Life of Pets” as #1. The superlatives for the animated family genre continue unabated.
The weekend brought few new releases, another reason grosses fell short of the same weekend last summer.
But more strong openers are coming, including “Star Trek Beyond” and “Suicide Squad” is guaranteed to soar). But the ongoing uncertainty continues.

While The Jungle Book didn’t quite amaze in the way that some hoped, but it was definitely one of the more interesting efforts of the year, and the home release has some interesting bonus features that look to make this family-friendly movie a must-own.
The commentary track on this one is probably worth the price of admission all on its own, especially given the complexities of putting this together, and Favreau’s proclaimed love for the story.
You’re also getting a featurette that runs through the adaptation process, which covers the years spent working on bringing the film to life. And, another featurette that takes us through Neel Sethi’s journey to land the role, and his experience being involved in making the film, and what that does to your life.
I imagine there may be more by the time it hits, but it looks like a solid release already.

“The Maze Runner” actress Patricia Clarkson is the latest performer to speak out on sexism in Hollywood, stating that while women have “risen,” they are still “underpaid” and a “minority in this business.” “Women have risen,” the actress said in an interview with The Guardian, “but we’re still underpaid and we’re still a vast minority in this business.” The interview to promote her new film, “Learning to Drive,” quickly turned to the discussion of the female-led “Ghostbusters” re-boot that has caused furor among many fans of the original films, especially men. Patricia Clarkson and Ben Kingsley give the 50-something drama a gentle gear change
Let’s hear it for small, cosy, comfy, B-minus-ish independent movies that punch a little above their weight. Such is Isabel Coixet and Sarah Kernochan’s Learning To Drive, which, at 89 minutes, is exactly as succinct as it needs to be, and not long enough to wear out its welcome. It’s a modest drama with relatively few surprises, but that’s not to say it is predictable or rote, as it lives or dies on the excellence of its leads – and Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson are rarely anything but brilliant.

Warner Bros is set to be the latest studio to gamble on fewer blockbuster movies. But there's a big silver lining, Simon argues...
Last week, the news landed that Warner Bros was considering reducing its output of films, focusing its slate primarily on DC, Lego and Harry Potter movies.
The argument runs that it’s had a bumpy few years, with expensive films such as Pan, Jupiter Ascending and In The Heart Of The Sea leaving the office copy of Excel looking decidedly red and distressed. The box office tail off of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is said not to have helped, either. It actually looks like we're officially in the era where a movie will end up making just under $1bn and end up being called a commercial disappointment.
If and when Warner Bros follows such an approach – and it’s not confirmed that it will,...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
The Diary of a Teenage Girl (Marie Heller)
Writer-director Marie Heller paints an accurate, honest, and vibrant portrait of her young protagonist, Minnie (Bel Powley), in The Diary of a Teenage Girl. With the use of some beautiful hand-drawn animation, an enlightening and funny narration, and Powley’s versatile performance, this is about as intimate as a subjective picture gets. We experience the world as this young girl does.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the nominees for their 2015 Eda Awards recognizing the amazing work done by and about women -- both in front and behind the camera. According to their site, "the EDAs are named in honor of Awfj founder Jennifer Merin.s mother, Eda Reiss Merin, a stage, film and television actress whose career spanned more than 60 years. A dedicated foot soldier in the industry, Eda was one of the founders of AFTRA and a long-standing Member of AMPAS."
Todd Haynes' "Carol" led the pack with nine nominations, followed by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with six, "Room" and "Spotlight" with five each, and "The Martian" with four.
I wish I can vote for the Eda Awards because their Special Mention Awards are just too darn fun with categories like "Best Nudity," and "Actress Most In Need of a New Agent!"
