The 8G Band will be playing its last tunes on Late Night With Seth Meyers this summer.
NBC-imposed budget cuts to the show mean that the house band — keyboard player Eli Janney, guitarist Seth Jabour and bassist Syd Butler — will be going away when Late Night begins its new season in the fall. The trio have been part of the show since its debut in 2014; Fred Armisen was the bandleader for much of that time but has been more of a guest performer in the past few years.
“Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker, the showrunner, brought us in in person to talk about it. They expressed their regret and frustration about it,” Janney said in an interview with Vulture. “They had been trying to work it out for months, but in the end NBC was adamant about where they wanted the budget to go. The fate of CBS owner Paramount Global remains way up in the air, and the future of broadcast TV in general remains a big question mark. But as CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said on Tuesday at the Banff World Media Festival, that’s not stopping her from plotting her primetime development plans way into the future.
“What’s great as we’re talking about 2025-26, in some cases, we’ve even pinpointed places where we want to be developing for 2026-27 already,” she said. “That’s the joy of working at CBS, and with the schedule and the stability that we have on the schedule, that we can think that far in advance. We’re crazy if we’re not taking advantage of that.”

“After Midnight,” the late night show hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson, has been renewed for its second season at CBS.
The series is a revival of “@Midnight,” which was hosted by Chris Hardwick on Comedy Central from 2013 to 2017. Like its predecessor, Tomlinson’s show features celebrity guests as they compete in pop culture and internet trivia games. “After Midnight” premiered in January and airs directly after “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” with Colbert serving as an executive producer.
Tomlinson recently spoke to Variety about vying for a Season 2 renewal — and what that would mean for the TV landscape, given that she’s currently the only female host in late night TV.
“It feels like pressure when people ask me about it,” she said. “Should I be more worried about that? I’m more worried about how we get a second season so that this crew of people gets to keep working together.

Taylor Tomlinson didn’t imagine herself as a host when she first met with CBS about their “@Midnight” reboot last year. She assumed the filming schedule would interfere with her first love — stand-up — but it was worth taking the meeting to meet new people and maybe score some panelist appearances.
But when the executives in charge revealed they’d create a filming schedule that would allow her to still perform comedy gigs on the weekends, an entirely new world opened up.
“I took this job because I wanted to develop new skills and grow as a person,” Tomlinson tells Variety while walking around her set. “I think I have definitely experienced that. I am able to work on a team of people that I really like, respect and enjoy.”

It is getting down to Emmy voters’ moment of truth as we are now less than a week away from the start of Emmy nomination voting on June 13, with all ballots due to be completed by 10 p.m. Pt on Monday, June 24. Nominations will be announced on July 17. In fact, the TV Academy just sent their first warning shot to voters, urging them to “Get Ready To Vote!”
The 76th Emmy Awards airs September 15 on ABC, exactly eight months since the strike-delayed previous Primetime Emmy show in January, and it seems just like yesterday doesn’t it? I can’t swear on it, but I believe this is the first year ever to have two Primetime Emmys in the same calendar year, and certainly the first to have two so close to each other. George Russell, one of the most prominent characters in HBO’s sprawling period ensemble “The Gilded Age,” is many things: a self-made man; a loving husband; a titan of industry. But Morgan Spector, the actor who plays George in Julian Fellowes’ fictionalized tale of 19th century New York City, is comfortable calling the character out for who he really is. “Robber baron,” Spector declares on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “You can say it!”
The first season of “The Gilded Age” made clear George was no one to trifle with, using his sharp elbows and iron will to get his way with the Russells’ new neighbors on the Upper East Side. But in Season 2, he’s not just a David punching up against Manhattan’s stuffy, hidebound old money; he’s a Goliath facing off against his own employees, who have started organizing for better wages and a more humane working schedule.

After Midnight might seem like an off-the-cuff show, but Taylor Tomlinson revealed the panelists get a bit of help to set them up for success.
Tomlinson participated in a Reddit Ama on Tuesday, where she fielded questions about her career as a comedian and After Midnight. One fan was curious about how much information (if any) the show’s panelists are given ahead of time in order to think about their responses.
“We have an amazing writers room full of hilarious comedians who help prep all of the panelists so they go into the show with great jokes prepared,” Tomlinson replied. “There’s still plenty of room to improvise and make jokes off-the-cuff, too though. And certain games specifically call for improv.”
After Midnight‘s writers room is led by Jo Firestone, who was a writer on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and head writer for Ziwe.

Nearly all of the late-night hosts are turning Memorial Day Weekend into an extended break, with all but one show off the entirety of next week.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyers, After Midnight, The Daily Show, and Watch What Happens Live are all dark next week. In Meyers’ case, it’ll be the second week of a two-week hiatus.
The only late-night show airing new episodes next week will be Jimmy Kimmel Live!— Kimmel will air new shows on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday next week.
While Kimmel was new Monday through Wednesday this week, he got an early start to the long weekend, taking off on Thursday this week.
Last Week Tonight and Real Time with Bill Maher are also dark this weekend.

Two of the most celebrated shows in Emmy history are set to experience a weird awards season.
Saturday Night Live, which has won more Emmys than any other show in television history, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which has won in its category eight years in a row, could both face the indignity of not being officially nominated for an Emmy as a result of submission rules.
The number of submissions in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category is expected to be significantly lower than last year. In addition to SNL and Oliver’s HBO show, the only other shows understood to be submitting in this category are CBS’ Taylor Tomlinson-hosted After Midnight, HBO’s Painting with John and The Magic Prank Show with Justin Willman, which launched in April.

Four months after premiering, Taylor Tomlinson’s After Midnight is making some changes that bring it a little bit closer to the traditional late-night talk shows.
While episodes of the comedy panel show have historically started with the host standing behind her podium and introducing the night’s panelists, last night’s show opened with Tomlinson performing a 7-minute trending-topic monologue, complete with some comedy club-style crowd work.
“Everyone wants to cut down on their screen time, so we’re here to help. We have rounded up the biggest stories from the internet,” Tomlinson explained as she kicked off a roundup of social media videos, “so you can chat with your barista tomorrow and be informed.”
Tomlinson riffed on Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s discriminatory college commencement speech, a viral video of kids excited to visit Four Seasons Orlando, and JoJo Siwa getting drunk at Disney World.

Everyone’s in the Emmy race, but Netflix and the Television Academy feel John Mulaney is better suited for a different category than intended — and that may only benefit his awards run.
Netflix’s live smash “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A,.” featuring the Emmy-winning stand-up comedian celebrating the quirks and unique personality of his beloved city, was massively popular on the platform. The streaming giant had planned to submit the show into the scripted variety category, where it would compete against the long-running “Saturday Night Live” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” However, Variety has learned exclusively that Netflix and the creative team felt the show was better suited for the talk series category and, as a result, will now compete against late-night hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon.

Seth Meyers isn’t going anywhere.
The Late Night host has extended his deal with NBCUniversal through 2028, the company announced Monday. Meyers, who skewered the network (among others) during NBCU’s upfront presentation Monday morning, will remain host of Late Night through 2028. Additionally, Meyers’ Sethmaker Shoemeyers production company has extended its deal with Universal Studio Group and will continue to create and develop scripted and unscripted programming for the company’s vast portfolio.
“Over the last 10 years, Seth has resonated with his audience night after night with a sharp monologue and established segments such as A Closer Look and Day Drinking,” said Katie Hockmeyer, executive vp late night programming at NBCUniversal Entertainment. “We’re so happy to continue this legacy franchise with Seth at the helm and watch him continue to elevate the success of Late Night.”

Los Angeles is not the first city fans would associate with comedian John Mulaney. That would be Chicago, his hometown and the backdrop to innumerable childhood anecdotes in his stand-up act, or New York, where he broke out as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and shot a special at Radio City Music Hall. But L.A. is where Mulaney now lives; it’s also currently home to the second iteration of Netflix Is a Joke, a massive, weeklong comedy festival organized by the streaming service as a show of genre dominance. (Netflix stand-up head Robbie Praw used to run programming at Montreal’s vaunted Just for Laughs event and has essentially created a West Coast version.) And so we have “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” a weeklong special event combining studio segments, pre-taped sketches and man-on-the-street interviews into a sort of pop-up talk show.

For viewers of The Price Is Right, it’s not uncommon to see contestants get riled up when they’re trying to win big money or prizes.
The popular show features games where viewers guess the prices of various household products or big-ticket items to win prizes.
While most of these games involve skill and smarts, contestants also get to participate in games or rounds involving some luck.
That includes spinning the Wheel, where a contestant’s spins can win lots of cash. Viewers recently saw a contestant in disbelief over his luck spinning the Wheel.
However, another contestant was full of emotion as she yelled on stage to Drew Carey about one of the pricing games.
The game show host even described her reaction to the pricing game as an “out-of-body experience.”

Drew Carey isn’t the same man he was before he attended his first Phish concert. The psychedelic rock band’s shows are trippy enough on their own, but they recently completed a run of shows at the new Las Vegas Sphere venue, a wholly immersive location with LED screens for walls. That twisted combination triggered a rebirth in the comedian. (And Phish thanked him for it.)
“I swear I just talked to God,” Carey posted on X (formerly Twitter) after the show. “Would give you all my money, stick my dick in a blender,...

The audience, host, and celebrity guests weren’t ready for Drew Carey’s crazy description of a Phish concert during his late-night television appearance!
The 65-year-old actor and comedian currently appears as the host of the daytime game show The Price Is Right.
However, he was recently up for a late-night guest spot on After Midnight with Taylor Tomlinson.
Carey appeared as a guest on the show along with singer Weird Al Yankovic and actor Thomas Lennon.
During The Talk Show part of Tomlinson’s show, she asked Carey what he would share if the cameras weren’t filming him at the moment.
From there, the former star of The Drew Carey Show told an outlandish story about his wild experience at a Phish concert.

After well over a decade in the spotlight, Community star Gillian Jacobs surely must get tired of people mangling her first name, which is pronounced with a hard G — as in “gall.” Which is exactly what After Midnight’s closed captioning system, or the people behind it, exhibited when Jacobs introduced herself on Monday night’s show.
After a brief introduction from After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson, Jacobs greeted the crowd with a quick primer on exactly how to pronounce her name: “Yes, I’m Gillian Jacobs,” she said. “That’s hard G, soft J, but the vibe is just right.”
It was an innocuous enough statement… unless you were reading the closed captions.
As first spotted by one eagle-eyed Redditor who was able to snap a quick pic, the vibe may have seemed a bit more salacious if you weren’t actually listening to Jacobs speak.

Next week is shaping up to be particularly quiet one in late night, with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night With Seth Meyers, and Saturday Night Live still on an extended Spring break, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert set to join them.
That will leave just three shows producing new episodes: Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Daily Show, and After Midnight.
That’s not to say that the others will be out on the beach drinking Mai Tais. Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers were both in Los Angeles this past week participating in promotional events for their shows, and Colbert will be following in their footsteps Sunday, as he and The Late Show team are scheduled to talk up their show at LA’s Dolby Theater as part of this year’s PaleyFest.
Meanwhile, at least a half dozen SNL cast members are out on the road.

Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

As you've no doubt heard by now, the royal family is in a state of crisis.
After removing herself from public life for several months, Kate Middleton announced last week that she has cancer.
The Princess of Wales didn't go into specifics with regard to the severity of her condition or the organs affected, but anyone who's ever experienced the ravages of cancer -- either firsthand or by witnessing a loved one's battle -- knows that it's a horrible disease that extracts a devastating toll.
In other words, it's nothing to joke about, which is why Stephen Colbert issued an apology to Kate and her family this week.
In case you missed it, Colbert -- like just about every other public figure in the Western world -- commented on Kate's disappearance and offered some lighthearted speculation about the possible causes.
The clip above is from a monologue that Colbert delivered two weeks ago,...

There’s no question that the traditonal broadcast networks are facing unique challenges when it comes to ad sales these days, but one new company is trying to shake up the status quo, and they’re dabbling with CBS in late night.
B-to-b advertisers haven’t historically had much of a presence on broadcast TV, as they’re typically considered a niche sector of the ad business. But these advertisers have money to spend, and as Briain Steinberg at Variety reports today, they stand to benefit from an association with CBS talent.
One of CBS’ buzzier shows on social media right now is After Midnight, which is hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, who boasts 1.6 million followers on Instagram and 2.6 million followers on TikTok.
Advertisers such as Codingscape, a technology consultant, view Tomlinson and the viral clips her show generates as a way to reach new, social media savvy customers.

Taylor Tomlinson has proven herself to be a big draw among younger crowds and those savvy with social media. Now CBS hopes the new “After Midnight” host will have similar appeal with a decidedly niche sector: B-to-b advertisers.
The network is trying to develop partnerships with a cluster of marketers that typically find their customers among decision-making executives at corporations. One such advertiser is Codingscape, a technology consultant that sees an alliance with Tomlinson as something that will help get potential clients to view the company as innovative. Instead of putting traditional TV ads on Tomlinson’s late-night show, however, Codingscape wants to run digital ads with its message posted alongside clips of her in action.
“This is a B-to-b that people haven’t heard of,” says Alan Gould, co-ceo of MutualMarkets, a tech upstart that has developed a system for pairing advertisers with TV programs that suit their products,...

Here's my pitch to sell you on director Benjamin Brewer's Arcadian: it's A Quiet Place but with Nicolas Cage and better creature elements. The last part came as a huge shocker. Writer Michael Nilon sets the stage for an eerily familiar doomsday scenario that feels like Gareth Edwards' Monsters at first but quickly finds its roots as a sibling to John Krasinski's alien invasion franchise. Arcadian does take a bit to reach its full momentum, not as dynamically engaging as a survivalist drama, but once the monsters reveal themselves? Brewer executes what could be a knockout audition to direct the next A Quiet Place sequel, should there be more on the horizon.
We first meet Cage's protagonist, Paul, fleeing a metropolitan city under state-of-emergency sirens. Military rockets are fired towards an invisible foe as Paul escapes the crumbling architecture, eventually retreating to a homestead in farmland...

Exclusive: Change is afoot at Funny or Die, Deadline has learned, with Kathy Goodman now to serve as CEO of the esteemed comedy studio.
After serving as Senior Advisor to owner Henry R. Muñoz III since his acquisition of the company several years back, Goodman steps into the role of Mike Farah, who soon will depart Funny or Die after a run of more than 15½ years. Also departing is Joe Farrell, who has been with the company for nearly 13 years, serving as Chief Creative Officer for the past few.
While transitioning out of their current executive roles, Farah and Farrell will remain executive producers on After Midnight, CBS’s recently launched late-night game show hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, and continue to produce the slate of projects they’ve created. Michelle Rosette remains aboard as CFO, with the search for a new Chief Comedy Officer in charge of development in its final stages.

The series premiere of “Tracker” reached an average 18.4 million viewers on CBS on Sunday.
Titled “Klamath Falls,” the episode hit this height thanks to massive lead-in from Super Bowl Lviii, which aired directly beforehand and became the most-watched telecast of all time, hitting an average viewership of 123.4 million people. “Tracker” retained at least 15% of the game’s audience.
It should be noted that the Super Bowl stat accounts for viewership across CBS, Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univision, CBS Sports and NFL digital properties, while the “Tracker” figure refers only to CBS viewership and will soon increase when data becomes available regarding viewership on Paramount+, CBS.com and the CBS app.
“Tracker” wasn’t the only show to benefit from the Super Bowl’s success: “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” aired next and reached 3.7 million viewers, its best viewership since 2021, while “After Midnight” followed and hit a series high of 2 million viewers.
