Sony Pictures Television is shutting down TriStar TV, the studio behind projects including Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty” and AMC’s “Lucky Hank.”
TriStar will be absorbed into the company’s centralized development group. Development on the current TriStar slate will be handled by Sony Pictures Television’s drama development department going forward.
Jennifer Turner, who has led TriStar TV since January 2022, and senior vice president of development Nicole Norwood, who joined in November 2022, are exiting the studio as part of the move. Additional staff cuts related to Tristar TV’s closing are not expected.
Spt’s decision to change course with its boutique label strategy comes after the company’s Gemstone label was folded into the main studio in November 2022.

Belt-tightening and cost-cutting continues across Hollywood as the Peak TV era has come to a close, and another legacy TV brand is being shuttered as a result.
Sony Television is shutting down its TriStar Television banner, which recently has been responsible for series like “Lucky Hank” (AMC), “The Afterparty” (Apple TV+), “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” (Showtime), “The Last Tycoon” (Amazon), and “Good Girls Revolt” (Amazon). In its heyday, TriStar TV produced and distributed “The Nanny,” “Mad About You,” and many more series.
A source says the decision is part of a larger shift around Sony Pictures Television’s boutique labels, not unlike the shuttering of the Gemstone brand several years ago, and that the hope is to weave all of TriStar’s values and goals into the bigger studio.
As THR first reported, TriStar TV’s active productions will be absorbed into the larger Sony Television operation,...

After a nine-year revival, Sony’s TriStar Television label, which was behind such series as The Afterparty, is being phased out again. Its two top executives, EVP Jennifer Turner, who ran the unit for the past two and a half years, and SVP Nicole Norwood, will be departing the studio. TriStar Television has no current series on the air. Its development slate will be taken over by Sony Pictures Television’s drama development team.
This marks the second such move of centralizing development under Katherine Pope since she became President of Sony Pictures TV in July 2022. The TV studio’s other boutique label, Gemstone, was folded into Spt in November 2022.
After being dormant for more than a decade, the TriStar Television brand was revived in 2015 as a boutique production unit within Sony Pictures Television. Suzanne Patmore Gibbs led the division from its relaunch until her sudden death in 2018, making it...

Sony Pictures Television is closing TriStar Television, the studio behind Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty” and AMC’s “Lucky Hank.”
As Sony shutters the division and folds the studio into the larger TV org, executive vice president Jennifer Turner and senior vice president of development Nicole Norwood are exiting the company. Other staff cuts are not expected as a result of TriStar TV closing and the Sony TV drama department will take oversight of current TriStar’s current TV projects.
Sources tell Variety that the move to shut down TriStar TV, which also produced series including “On Becoming a God in Central Florida,” “Good Girls Revolt” and “The Last Tycoon,” is part of an overall strategy shift at Sony Pictures Entertainment regarding its boutique labels.

“More stars than there are in heaven” was once the slogan for Hollywood’s largest studio. Larger-than-life celebrities like Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn, Jean Harlow and Gene Kelly were common fixtures at MGM. Today, MGM is an IP outpost purchased by Amazon for $8.5 billion in 2022, but in its day, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had the biggest lot in Hollywood and produced some of the most extravagant films. Located in Culver City, MGM’s famously sprawling lot began as it grew from the 40 acres owned by Samuel Goldwyn. The legendary MGM property was 3 miles long and housed more than 45 buildings and 14 stages, in addition to numerous outdoor sets that would be built over the years.
MGM was home to countless classic films, and in 1939 alone, the studio backed the timeless fantasy The Wizard of Oz and distributed the Oscar-winning Gone With the Wind, the Ernst Lubitsch/Greta Garbo comedy Ninotchka,...

If Hollywood truly suffers from a leadership malaise, as some charge, would the return of Monroe Stahr resuscitate the system? Filmmakers respect his judgment, stars his panache and investors his discipline, so Stahr’s return may ignite a new Irving Thalberg-like era.
Whoops — he’s not available.
The manic and manipulative hero of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon ruled MGM in its ‘30s heyday, but Stahr’s fictional reign was short-lived. So was Fitzgerald’s brilliant but never completed 1939 novel, which modeled Stahr after Thalberg.
Having achieved literary stardom with The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald’s decision to write a Hollywood novel, while simultaneously working as a script doctor, plunged the novelist into alcoholic paralysis. He never managed to finish his book and even his screenplays were unrealized.

Any movie with an opening sequence featuring a close-up of an elephant’s anus spraying diarrhea on hapless bystanders is certainly announcing itself as something, and by the end of the three hours and eight minutes of Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” viewers will have been exposed to any number of bodily secretions, including urine, vomit and tears.
The tears come at the film’s climax, no doubt in the hopes that the audience will follow suit, but of all the aforementioned emittances, they feel the least organic to this bloated, hyperbolized and ultimately dreary extravaganza of decadence and nostalgia.
Both a valentine and a poison-pen letter to the American film industry in its infancy, “Babylon” aspires to the grandiosity of “The Last Tycoon” and “The Day of the Locust,” though it more often recalls Ryan Murphy’s embarrassing and wildly ahistorical “Hollywood” miniseries.

Imogen Reid will star opposite Ellen Pompeo in the untitled orphan limited series at Hulu that was announced on Aug. 3.
The series is inspired by the true story of a Midwestern couple who adopts a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism (Reid). But as they begin to raise her alongside their three other children, they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they question her story, they’re confronted with hard questions of their own about the lengths they’re willing to go to defend themselves and protect their own narrative, falling into a battle that’s fought in the tabloids, the courtroom, and ultimately their marriage.
Reid trained at the Miskin Theatre at North Kent College. Her work has been featured across regional theatres in the UK. Her onscreen credits include “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Crimes of Grindelwald,...

“Grey’s Anatomy” has covered hundreds of social issues over 18 seasons and 400 episodes, and more topical stories are on the way as the show gears up for its Season 19 return. However, Ellen Pompeo said on the latest episode of her “Tell Me” podcast that the long-running ABC medical drama series needs to change the way it approaches stories about social issues. Pompeo is tired of episode one-offs and wants social issues to be more “subtly” threaded through a season.
“I think if I had any desire honestly it would be to be less sort of preachy in one episode about certain things,” Pompeo said. “It’s like, we do one episode about let’s see… Asian hate crimes is one that we did this past season that was really moving. I think I’d like to see things happen a little more subtly and over time. You know, consistently and less...

Starz has unveiled the trailer for the upcoming historical drama “The Serpent Queen” starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici. The wicked new drama series will premiere on Sunday, September 11th.
A historical drama with an edge, “The Serpent Queen” puts a contemporary spin on conventional storytelling to tell the tale of Catherine de Medici’s (Morton) rise to power. In the series premiere, “Medici Bitch,” Catherine’s tale unfolds through flashbacks as she defends her actions and imparts the lessons she’s learned to her new servant confident, Rahima. At 14, the young, orphaned Catherine marries into the 16th-century French court. Despite her commoner status, her uncle Pope Clement, has negotiated a large dowry and a geopolitical alliance in return for the union, and with it comes the expectation of many heirs. However, on her wedding night, Catherine learns that her new husband is in love with Diane de Poitiers,...

The new “Orphan Black” series in the works at AMC has found its writer.
Variety has learned exclusively that Anna Fishko is onboard to write and executive produce the potential new iteration of the series, which was first reported as being in the works back in 2019. A writers’ room for the project is now open, though exact plot details remain under wraps.
It is known, however, that the project is not a reboot of the original show, but rather a new story set in the same world. Boat Rocker Studios, a division of Boat Rocker Media, will produce.
Fishko is no stranger to working with AMC, having been a writer and supervising producer on “Fear the Walking Dead” for the basic cabler during the show’s fourth season in 2018.
Most recently, she worked as a writer and co-executive producer on the Netflix series “The Society,” which had been renewed for...

Jack Nicholson has had a long career playing brooding rebels, crazed villains and sneering charmers on screen. Soon he’ll star opposite Kristen Wiig in a remake of “Toni Erdmann.” He’s a fixture of American cinema and the Lakers courtside seating. For his 80th birthday, we aimed to rank all of Jack’s major, already iconic roles, from worst to best.
“Man Trouble” (1992)
“Man Trouble” is a ridiculous screwball crime comedy in which Nicholson and Ellen Barkin get upstaged by horny dogs. It seems impossible the same guy who did “Five Easy Pieces” made this.
“A Safe Place” (1971)
This bizarre, formless ’70s relic based on a play stars Tuesday Weld and Orson Welles opposite Nicholson about a girl living a fantasy in which she never grows up.
“The Terror” (1963)
Nicholson gives a stiff performance in this Roger Corman picture opposite Boris Karloff, but he gets to kiss a woman who transforms into a corpse.

Mike Fenton, the legendary casting director who worked on the “Back to the Future” franchise, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and scores of other classic movies and TV shows, has died. He was 85.
Fenton co-founded what is now known as Casting Society of America in 1982. He was a prominent casting director for more than 40 years, with a mile-long resume that stretched from “The Andy Griffith Show” and “That Girl” to “Chinatown,” “American Graffiti,” “The Godfather II,” “Blade Runner,” “A Christmas Story,” “Norma Rae,” “Footloose,” “Honeymoon in Vegas” and “Chaplin.”
“Working with Mike Fenton was like working in a candy store — he made casting a blast,” Steven Spielberg said in a statement. “His fervent support of actors was the stuff of legend, and after landing a part, any actor’s smile was rarely as wide as Mike’s. He didn’t just support actors, he launched crusades.

Oscar-nominated screenwriter and The Comey Rule writer-director Billy Ray is urging WGA West members to mobilize through the guild’s political action committee to “rid the Senate” of GOP incumbents Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue in next month’s dual runoff races in Georgia.
Loeffler and Perdue “are fairly loathsome,” he said today in a mass email to the guild’s members. “Both are millionaires who have abused their office to enrich themselves illegally, using intel from a Senate Covid briefing last January to improve their stock portfolios while simultaneously telling their constituents that the pandemic was nothing to worry about. They have to go. And we have to do our part.”
The guild’s Pac endorsed their Democratic challengers, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, in the general election, and is supporting them again in the runoff. Ray called them both “great Americans.”

Last week, just before the President’s diagnosis consumed us, Hollywood leaders joined in asking that Congress send coronavirus relief funds to exhibitors. Those were described as a life-and-death issue for theaters. A mortal threat. And who can doubt it? If the White House isn’t safe, movie houses are certainly still a question mark.
But the dramatic language of the plea—“our country cannot afford to lose the social, economic, and cultural value that theaters provide” warned a joint letter—couldn’t help but recall a peculiar truth about the movie business. That is, it is usually dying of something.
Strikes. New technology. Piracy. Star salaries. Something.
In fact, morbidity is an old habit in Hollywood. The trick is to know what is really an existential threat—this one certainly seems real—and what is just another stage death in an industry that is forever deciding the show is finally over.
