Earlier this year, it was revealed that frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct – have been developing a new project in secret. Coogler has written the script for this project, which is being described as both a genre picture and a period piece that Coogler will be directing and Jordan is attached to star in. The project is set up at Warner Bros., is expected to have a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 7, 2025. Coogler has been assembling Jordan’s supporting cast over the last couple of months, and Deadline reports that the latest actor to sign on is Lola Kirke, whose credits include The Leftovers, Gone Girl, American Made, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,...

Freevee isn’t going away, Amazon says.
With Amazon’s Prime Video launch of ads by default last month, rumors and speculation have heated up that the tech giant would no longer have a strategic need for Freevee — its free, ad-supported streaming service that is separate from Prime Video. A Feb. 21 report by Adweek, citing anonymous sources, said that Amazon will “sunset” Freevee, likely in the second quarter and possibly before the NewFronts in late April.
Asked for comment, Amazon said the Adweek report is inaccurate.
“There are no changes to Freevee,” the rep said in an email to Variety. “Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and originals, all for free.”

There are a few elements of the Golden Globes that, while relevant to only people in Los Angeles and the wider entertainment industry, explain the show’s lasting appeal to the town’s starriest names. It’s often billed as LA’s drunkest night.
That’s been the grin-and-bear-it aspect of this awards show at its height: Suffer through courting favor with the often offbeat and invasive former Hollywood Foreign Press Association; gain access to a genuinely fun night on the town.
The trophies themselves? Almost a consolation prize, one that can market select dramas, musicals, and comedies as must-sees in theaters before the Oscars, rather than serving as a reliable barometer for where Academy voters’ heads are at.
In recent years, the awards body came under fire for its conduct and lack of diversity, faced a couple of ownership changes (resulting in the dissolution of the HFPA), and found...

In director Roger Ross Williams’ Cassandro, we first meet Saúl Armendáriz — the real-life luchador portrayed by Gael García Bernal — when he’s still scraping his way through the amateur circuit. He’s got an uphill battle ahead: Not only is he smaller and lighter than most of his brawny opponents, he’s also openly gay and the subject of taunts and jeers from his leotard-clad colleagues.
And then, about 20 minutes in, Cassandro arrives. Armendáriz decides to embrace a new identity as one of lucha libre’s exoticos, extravagant male fighters...

Ayo Edebiri‘s upgrade to lead for Season 2 of “The Bear” has already cooked up some good results. She earned her inaugural Golden Globe nomination in Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress, setting up the FX hit to achieve a rare Globe hat trick: sweeping three comedy categories in the same year.
And “The Bear” is expected to do just that in the early odds, sitting in first place in Best Comedy/Musical Series, Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress for Edebiri and Best TV Comedy/Musical Actor for Jeremy Allen White. The last show to accomplish this was “30 Rock” in 2009. The NBC comedy won its only series Globe then and earned lead acting honors for Tina Fey (her second of two) and Alec Baldwin (his second of three). Prior to this, you have to go all the way back to 1993 for another comedy triple play, when “Roseanne” and stars Roseanne Barr and John Goodman prevailed.

The International Chopin Piano Competition is the closest thing that concert pianists have to the Olympics. You might even say that, since the prestigious contest only happens every five years, the Olympics are the closest thing that athletes have to the International Chopin Piano Competition. Twice a decade, the world’s greatest virtuosos descend upon the city of Warsaw for a grueling three weeks of trials in which every mistake is placed under the world’s largest microscope. Contestants are limited to performing the works of Frédéric Chopin, so there’s little room to mask errors with creativity. Win the contest, and you’re on a fast track to classical music superstardom. Play a wrong note? Your dreams of glory are instantly dashed.
“Pianoforte,” Jakub Piatek’s documentary about the 2021 competition (postponed from its original 2020 date), follows a group of young musicians during their three weeks in Warsaw vying for the title.

You might think that the fact the Emmys haven’t yet been handed out might serve to hamstring the Golden Globes. But that presumption would be incorrect, since the Globes are especially difficult to predict because they rarely follow any established pattern. Emmy winners in particular seem to have little impact on which TV series wind up triumphant at the Globes as well.
Consider some recent history. While the Emmys were honoring either ABC’s “Modern Family” (five) and HBO’s “Veep” (three) for eight consecutive years in the Best Comedy Series category, the Globes were paying tribute to fledgling streaming comedies like Amazon’s “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” Sometimes, that makes it a trendsetter in honoring the new and buzzworthy. This story about “John Mulaney: Baby J” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
One man. By himself. On a stage. Talking.
That’s what director Alex Timbers had to work with on “John Mulaney: Baby J,” a Netflix standup comedy special in which actor and comic John Mulaney spends 80 minutes telling a Boston audience about his harrowing trip through drug addiction and into rehab. The elements were simpler than what Timbers had to work with when he directed “Beetlejuice” and “Moulin Rouge! “I fell in love with her,” declares Gbemisola Ikumelo about portraying fan-favorite character Chance Morgan on “A League of Their Own.” For our recent webchat she adds, “A lot of it was in the writing. She jumps off the page and you just go, ‘don’t screw it up, it’s all here!’ But also, there’s a real freedom given to us on set to play and to improvise and to go, ‘Ok, this take is for you guys to mess around, so I think in playing, you’re finding other layers for the character. I didn’t think she was funny. Actually, I wasn’t setting out to play this comic role. But when it’s improvised and you get to see what the bond looks like between two friends, it is funny and you come into the world of in-jokes between two friends, but your audience become...

The place you order replacement phone charger cables and bulk toilet paper from, making TV shows? Oh, how we laughed back in 2014! What kind of shows would Amazon make? The Loneliness of the Long Distance Delivery Driver? Warehouse Wars? Sorry We Missed You: a dating show where contestants can only speak through a letterbox?.
We were idiots in 2014. In almost a decade, Prime Video – as it’s now styled – has invested in some of the best drama around. It hasn’t stuck to one genre or poured everything into a single big-hitter, but has commissioned widely and mostly, very well. There have been bold sci-fi and alt-history that doesn’t pull its punches, from The Man in the High Castle to The Underground Railroad and The Power, as well as culture-redefining LGBTQ+ shows like Transparent, zany comedies like Mozart in the Jungle, action thrillers Reacher and Jack Ryan, and cool collaborations like Swarm.

Wes Anderson is thanking his lucky stars for Covid protocols overlapping with the “Asteroid City” production.
The auteur, whose science-filled out-of-this-world film debuted at 2023 Cannes, credited the global pandemic for inspiring the quarantine plotline in his latest script.
“During the intense part of the Covid period, we were writing the script. I don’t think there would be a quarantine in the story if we weren’t experiencing it,” Anderson said. “It wasn’t deliberate. Writing is the most improvisational part of the whole process.”
The subsequent pandemic protocols on the “Asteroid City” set in Spain also grounded the ensemble feature. The film was shot between August and October 2021.
“The making of the movie during Covid protocols, it really suited us. It worked for us,” Anderson added. “I loved that we formed a troupe and stayed together and sat at a long table and had dinner.”

Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane are starring in “Between the Temples,” a new film from writer and director Nathan Silver that’s being described as “an anxious comedy.” It’s the story of a cantor who is locked in a crisis of faith and finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as his new adult Bat Mitzvah student.

Mafia Mamma is a film directed by Catherine Hardwicke starring the “almost” always great Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci, and this time, as great and wonderful as they are, they don’t manage to save a comedy with jokes that don’t end up being funny.
Bad start for a comedy, don’t you think?
Mafia Mamma Movie Review
Mafia Mamma is a parody crime thriller that without wanting to go anywhere and aware of this circumstance, limits itself to overflow with clichés (it was obvious), to drop more or less funny jokes and that relies on the two stars’ performances (especially Toni Collette’s) to save the movie from sinking.
And no matter how great he or she could be, no actor can save a bad script nor, dare we say, a bad editing at the level of rhythm. Thus, Mafia Mamma is sometimes placed in almost separate scenes without a common nexus that,...

However, they’re not the only ones after the bounty.
Shot in Spanish, the series also stars Juan Pablo Medina, Mabel Cadena, Nicolás Furtado, Andrés Baida, Andrea Chaparro, Juan Pablo Fuentes and Bruno Bichir among others.
