Time is running out to stream films like “Lincoln,” “The Fisher King” and “He Got Game” on HBO Max. Below is the complete list of everything leaving HBO and HBO Max in January 2022, which includes some classic “Planet of the Apes” films, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning “Argo” and 1988’s “Married to the Mob,” among others. Most of these titles leave the streaming service on Jan. 31, but departing HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 20 is a behind-the-scenes look at Guillermo del Toro’s new film “Nightmare Alley,” which is exclusively in theaters now.
If you’re looking for noteworthy titles to add to your watchlist before they depart, “Lincoln” is one of Steven Spielberg’s best, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is a handsome and nail-biting spy thriller and “The Fisher King” is a great two-hander with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams.
Check out the full list of what’s leaving HBO Max in January 2022 below.

Orange Entertainment Co. has optioned Asphyxia’s YA novel Future Girl, which explores what it means to come of age as a Deaf teenager against the backdrop of a near-future Melbourne facing an environmental catastrophe.
With Oec, Asphyxia will co-develop the project, currently being prepped as a series, serving as writer, creator, and EP.
Published last year via Allen & Unwin Australia, Future Girl has been described by writer and appearance activist Carly Findlay as “a life-changing book for young Deaf and disabled people…demonstrating the importance of the #OwnVoices movement.”
Asphyxia is excited to bring authentic Deaf characters to the screen, providing a positive representation for the 1 in 6 Australians who have hearing loss.
“I have never even seen a movie in my own language, Auslan, which is poetically beautiful and expressive and begging to shine on the big screen. At last, in Future Girl, it will,” she says.

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

Out this week from The Film Detective comes The Sin of Nora Moran, a 1933 pre-Code, Poverty Row film directed by Phil Goldstone. The Sin of Nora Moran is one of those "fallen women" stories that Old Hollywood was once known so well for, featuring an unmarried lady, who, by no fault of her own, attempts to be self-sufficient and obtain gainful employment. She finds a job after much difficulty, as well as romance, but at an extreme cost. Starring Zita Johann as Nora Moran, the film at first opens on an upset woman, Edith Crawford who's found love letters...

I had never heard of this comedy-thriller, and the good news is that it’s a pleasant surprise, thoroughly enjoyable. The toughest kind of filmmaking must be making comedy seem effortless, and that’s what Eric Blakeney does in this quirky, near-screwball take on the done-to-death drug deal undercover thriller. Liam Neeson is sensational, and producer Sandra Bullock is at her most charming. Even the flatulence jokes are funny.

As the director of films like “Con Air” and “The Expendables 2,” Simon West has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Nicolas Cage and Sylvester Stallone. But for his latest film, “Gun Shy,” he tapped some less-famous people: He crowdfunded. The Saban Films comedy (based on the Mark Haskell Smith novel “Salty”) stars Antonio Banderas as an aging rock star who battles rebels in the South American jungle to rescue his kidnapped wife (Olga Kurylenko). It’s the first time a major theatrical release has been crowdfunded, setting U.K. fundraising records along the way. But West actually started out.

No actor in 2017 wants to hear that his performance made a viewer think of Johnny Depp. Much worse is the thought that the present-day Depp would have been more enjoyable in the role — which is almost certainly true of Simon West's Gun Shy, one hell of a misfire in which Antonio Banderas plays a once-famous rock star who must ransom his wife from Chilean kidnappers. A giant thud of a film that makes one doubt the fact that West ever directed a proper Hollywood movie (proof: 1997's dumb but crowdpleasing Con Air, which had producer Jerry Bruckheimer's paw-prints all...

"Rock out with your glock out." Saban Films has debuted the first official trailer for an action comedy called Gun Shy, formerly known as Salty (which is the title that appears on the very early poster art seen below the trailer). The movie stars Antonio Banderas as an over-the-top rockstar named Turk Henry, with a wife played by Olga Kurylenko. She gets kidnapped while the two are vacationing in Chile, and Banderas recruits some wacky people to help him find and free her. Sounds like a fun straight-to-vhs concept for an action movie, why not. The full cast includes Ben Cura, Mark Valley, Aisling Loftus, David Mitchell, Jeremy Swift, and Jesse Johnson. This really looks ridiculous, but it may be a fun beer-and-pizza rental. Antonio Banderas is ready to go three for three with his creative collaboration with Ambi Media Group, the production company headed up by Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi.
That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that after working together on both Black Butterfly and the Andrea Bocelli biopic The Music of Silence – two projects currently brewing in post-production – Banderas has signed on for Beyond the Edge, a new action-thriller to be directed by Aleksandr Boguslavskiy.
Moviegoers have become accustomed to the Spanish great headlining one drama after the next, but Banderas has dabbled in the action genre before, most recently for Sylvester Stallone’s bonkers Expendables franchise – a series that will purportedly continue with a fourth and final installment. This time around, the actor will assume the role of a deft master of fraud, with the early logline teasing what’s in store for Antonio Banderas’ protagonist.

If you’ve put money into Simon West’s new ‘Spinal Tap meets The Hangover’ comedy – a rare mid-budget film going cap-in-hand to the internet – you might get more back than a complimentary mouse mat
Director Simon West made Tomb Raider, The Expendables 2 and Con Air, and has shuttled stars such as Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie and Sylvester Stallone to some of their biggest box-office successes. He’s a blockbuster film-maker, but his new film – Salty – couldn’t be more indie.
West has invited public investors, by using the equity crowdfunding platform SyndicateRoom, to buy shares in Salty in order to fund production. The project has broken UK crowdfunding records, reaching £1.9m last month. This is the first time members of the public have been given the chance to buy shares in a film’s major returns, so now all eyes are on Salty – to see what West can deliver for his many investors.

Equity crowdfunding has the potential to become an important tool for filmmakers, but still faces regulatory hurdles around the world, said panellists at Busan’s Kofic Industry Forum (Oct 5-7).
During the “Future of Financing through Crowdfunding” panel, the speakers also compared crowdfunding strategies in the Us, UK, China and Korea, and advised filmmakers who use crowdfunding to adopt a hybrid approach.
Stephan Paternot, CEO of Slated, an online platform that brings together investors and projects, explained how equity crowdfunding legislation is slowly making its way through Us Congress. “The Jobs Act [Jumpstart Our Business Startups] will help crowdfunding evolve past donations and rewards, but the rules are still being defined and it hasn’t benefitted many people yet,” Paternot said.
He also explained how crowdfunding in any form still accounts for a tiny fraction of the $14bn spent on making independent movies in the Us each year: “You can raise around 10% through fans and have to raise 90% yourself. Crowdfunding does not...
