Stars: Melora Walters, Jocelin Donahue, Joe Swanberg, Richard Brake | Written and Directed by Mickey Keating
Offseason, the new film from writer/director Mickey Keating opens with Ava Aldrich addressing the viewer in a scene that recalls Marianna Hill’s warning at the start of Messiah of Evil.
That film involved a woman’s trip to a touristy coastal town in search of her missing and presumed dead father, Offseason opens with Marie Aldrich heading to the touristy island where Ava is buried. It seems her grave was desecrated and her presence is required to remedy it.
As she and George arrive their trip is almost derailed. It seems the drawbridge to the island is raised during the offseason and the Bridge Man only relents and lowers it after finding out why she’s there. He also warns them that after tomorrow it’ll be locked until spring.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s international distribution company Telepool is investing in a genre slate from indie producer Eric B. Fleischman, along with Maurice Fadida’s Kodiak Pictures, Variety has learned exclusively.
Fleischman was a Sundance Film Festival breakout star in 2016, when at age 26, he made a strong showing with “Sleight” and “Carnage Park.” His company, Defiant Studios, will receive a cash infusion for several horror-thrillers, beginning with the film “Phobias,” which is currently in production.
The Smiths acquired Telepool in late June, with Marc Forster and his shop Elysian Fields. This marks the first significant investment and U.S. expansion for Telepool, a standalone theatrical and multi-platform distribution entity with a big presence in Europe. Kodiak is a producer on David Ayer’s upcoming “The Tax Collector,” starring Shia Labeouf, as well as Gerard Butler’s “Keepers.”

Actor and filmmaker Pat Healy seems to pop up everywhere, but a corporate office ceiling is a new surprise — even for him. Hot off a bit reporter part in Steven Spielberg’s “The Post,” Healy lends his oddball comedic talents to “Man in Ceiling,” a short film that turns office mundanity into the loopy stuff of surreal comedy. Healy stars as a disgruntled office worker shirking his responsibilities by hiding in the ceiling above his desk.
It’s the kind of role Healy excels in; that ubiquitous face practically screams disheveled corporate renegade. A filmmaker in his own right, Healy recently brought his madcap sensibilities to “Take Me,” which he directed and starred in opposite Taylor Schilling (“Orange is the New Black”).

If you have been paying any attention to the independent horror scene over the last five years, you are undoubtedly familiar with the work of actor Graham Skipper. From his star-making turn as Dr. Herbert West in the stage version of the Re-Animator musical to his leading man turns in the films of director Joe Begos (Almost Human, The Mind’s Eye) to his role in Jackson Stewart’s Beyond the Gates to seemingly countless supporting roles in everything from Tales of Halloween to Carnage Park to The Devil’s Dolls, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to watch a modern independent horror movie and not have Graham Skipper show up. While I’m always delighted to see him pop up in something I’m watching—I know that for however long he’s on screen, I am in good hands—that kind of ubiquity doesn’t automatically lend itself to talent behind the camera.

At the age of just 26 or 27, writer/director Mickey Keating already has five feature films under his belt. These aren’t just homemade backyard projects shot with his buddies for $200, either; these are movies with major stars of the indie horror scene (Graham Skipper, Lauren Ashley Carter, Pat Healy, Larry Fu**ing Fessenden) and getting actual distribution through companies like Glass Eye Pix and IFC Midnight. While his previous films have shown major chops behind the camera, they’ve also all had an air of familiarity about them; Keating is a director who wears his influences proudly, and some of his past work has played more like him riffing on an existing piece than like something borne of his own interests and obsessions.
With his fifth feature, Psychopaths, Keating has really come into his own as a director. It is his most original, most ambitious, most audacious work to date...

"You look like a friendly crowd!" Samuel Goldywn Films recently debuted this official trailer for the new horror thriller titled Psychopaths, which first played at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. This is also the latest film from Mickey Keating, director of the films Ritual, Pod, Darling, and Carnage Park, which was also released this year. Psychopaths is about seven different serial killers whose paths cross over one single, blood soaked night. This looks flashy and stylish, though it's hard to tell what exactly is going on in this trailer. The ensemble cast includes Ashley Bell, Angela Trimbur, James Landry Hebert, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Jeremy Gardner, Ivana Shein, and Larry Fessenden. If you're into indie horror, and masks, and serial killer films, then this is for you. But if you're not into that, well, maybe not. Have fun. An American couple accidentally disturbs a deadly spirit in Thailand in the new horror film Ghost House, and with the supernatural thriller out now in select theaters from Vertical Entertainment and on DVD and VOD platforms from Lionsgate, Daily Dead caught up with director Rich Ragsdale to discuss filming in Thailand, the presence of ghosts on set, and working with Scout Taylor-Compton and James Landry Hébert.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Rich and Kevin! What attracted you guys to the story of Ghost House and made you want to tell this story on screen?
Rich Ragsdale: Ghost Houses (also known as spirit houses) are ubiquitous in Thailand, but are pretty much unknown in the west, so we thought they would make a...

Director Mickey Keating is a rising star in the indie horror arena, turning in fantastic films like Ritual, Pod, and the 2016 survival thriller Carnage Park. The last time we caught up with composer Giona Ostinelli, he discussed his intriguing collaborations with Mickey Keating, and after the release of Carnage Park last summer, Ostinelli has kept busy creating unnerving music for Spike's The Mist TV series. Daily Dead had the pleasure of touching base with Giona once again for our latest Q&A to discuss conjuring creepy chords for the Stephen King adaptation.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us again, Giona. How did you get involved as the composer for Spike’s new The Mist TV series?
Giona Ostinelli: Thank you for having me, it’s always a pleasure! Well, I was hiking and suddenly the sun disappeared under a thick layer of fog. I tried making a phone call but, of course, there was no phone reception whatsoever and so I decided to wait it out until the sun comes back again.

Over the last few weeks, the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival celebrated the best that the indie filmmaking world has to offer, and during the fest’s run, I had the chance to check out just a few of the genre-related offerings on Tribeca’s lineup: The Endless from Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, Pat Healy’s feature film directorial debut, Take Me, and the psychological thriller Tilt from Kasra Farahani. Read on for my thoughts on this trio of thought-provoking cinematic treats.
The Endless: Before I start discussing The Endless, I want to take a moment and say that I feel like the best way to experience the latest from Benson and Moorhead is to go in knowing as little as possible, because that’s how I saw it, and it 110% blew my mind. That being said, part of my job is reviewing movies, so I promise I will keep...

Residents of Los Angeles, beware—there may be some Psychopaths on the lose. So it is in the Tribeca-premiering feature from writer/director and horror master Mickey Keating, who has managed to bring five features to life while still in his twenties. Following Carnage Park, starring Ashley Bell—which premiered at Sundance last year—Keating’s latest entry follows a band of serial killers out for blood in the City of Angels on one truly terrifying night. “It's a very…...

Toward the end of Mickey Keating’s latest horror film, the narrator apologizes “if the violence was too gratuitous and the story was too ambiguous.” It’s a kind enough gesture, really, even if it threatens to make the role of film critic superfluous. Nonetheless, it comes as too little, too late for Psychopaths, receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Psychopaths, the latest film from writer/director Mickey Keating, recently enjoyed its world premiere at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. Daily Dead had the chance to speak with Keating and Psychopaths co-stars Ashley Bell and Larry Fessenden, and the trio discussed reteaming for their latest collaboration (both Bell and Fessenden were in Keating’s previous genre effort, Carnage Park) and what fans can expect from Keating’s latest slice of horror-fueled fun.
For those who may miss out on Psychopaths during Tribeca, the film heads to The Overlook Film Festival later this week.
Great to speak with you today, guys, and I can’t wait to see the movie. So, Mickey, can you discuss what inspired you this time around? From what I've seen from the clips and different publicity materials, this feels like a complete 180 from Carnage Park and your other previous projects.

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

This has easily been the hardest time I’ve ever had whittling down my favorite genre offerings for the year. I was fortunate to watch so many great movies throughout the course of the last 12 months (over 150—new and old!), and considering the quality of projects from both the studio and independent sides of the business was exceedingly high, I probably could have featured 20 films on this list, and still would have at least a dozen more I could recommend to fellow fans. 2016 was definitely one of the best recent years in horror and that’s pretty rad.
Beyond the realm of movies, horror also had a strong showing on TV, as it seems almost every single network these days has something of interest if you’re looking to immerse yourself in horror on the small screen. I was also fortunate enough to attend several amazing genre events in 2016, making...

Walking blind into Beyond The Gates, with little knowledge of the film besides its poster featuring Barbara Crampton’s spooky visage hovering over a cartoon VHS tape, you might expect a self-consciously broad cotton-candy fantasy of a horror movie of the sort perfected by Stuart Gordon in the 1980s. And you will get that, eventually, underscored by a synthesizer soundtrack and lit in lurid shades of neon pink, purple, and blue. In between, though, you’ll also get estranged siblings, an abusive father, and some heavy talk about alcoholism.
