“Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know…” from Chidananda S Naik, a student from Ftii, Pune, India, has received La Cinef Award for best short, sparking thunderous applause, at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The film, the director told Variety, was “challenging to shoot.”
“We had only four days. I was basically told not to make this film. It’s based on folklore from Karnataka [in India]. These are the stories we grew up with, so I was carrying this idea since my childhood.
In the film, an elderly woman steals a rooster and deprives a village of sunlight.
Jurors Lubna Azabal, who was the president, Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, Claudine Nougaret, Paolo Moretti and Vladimir Perišić, also decided to award joint second prize to “The Chaos She Left Behind” by Nikos Kolioukos (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – Greece) and “Out the Window Through the Wall” by Asya Segalovich (Columbia University – U.S).

While the actor has shared that every film represents him in a way, there is one that stands out for its profound connection to the filmmaker’s own life and his love for cinema, The Fabelmans.

Released in 2022, the film follows Sammy Fabelman, a character based on Spielberg, as he navigates through family dynamics, friendships, and his passion for filmmaking. Spielberg has shared that working on the movie was deeply cathartic, likening it to a costly but invaluable form of therapy.

Cannes — For years, reports of MipTV’s terminal decline were somewhat exaggerated. Now, however, they’re real. On March 26, Rx France, organizers of MipTV, announced the launch of Mip London, over Feb. 23-28, 2025. MipTV’s 2024 edition will be its last.
Attendance, once 10,000 in 2018, 9,500 in 2019, had plunged to 5,510 on-site delegates last year. That still made it the second biggest TV event in the world. Still dwindling participation this year, is down to around 3,000.
What a MipTV swan song, bulwarked by Canneseries, can deliver, is another question. 10 takes on this year’s edition:
MipTV Sticking to Its Guns
Traditionally, MipTV delivered a straight sales market where sales companies or divisions hold back-to-back meetings with distributors who get links to their shows. History has hardly been on MipTV’s side. As simply raising the finance for a show in an environment of rising costs and declining commissions has become more and more of a challenge,...

Darkest Hour have announced their 10th studio album, Perpetual | Terminal, arriving February 23rd via Mnrk Heavy. The video for the title track can be streamed now.
The song serves as the album opener and melds melodic guitar leads with crushing technical metalcore. According to the band, it’s the sound of “a whole Darkest Hour album in one song.”
“It felt like the perfect album opener,” the group stated via a press release, “eventually became the title track, and therefore is the perfect place to start as we present this new album to the world.”
Perpetual | Terminal is Darkest Hour’s first record in nearly seven years and “centers around the duality of ‘survival while embracing rebirth,'” in the words of guitarist Mike Schleibaum.
“We keep killing parts of ourselves to make new parts and survive,” he elaborated. “The story of the record is the story of the band.

November 1st is a tough day for horror hounds. The decorations are still up, the air remains crisp, but the spirit has seemingly moved on, perhaps vanquished by the sun. Alamo Drafthouse says to hell with all of that and has announced two month’s worth of genre joy that’ll take you from Dia de los Muertos to Christmas Eve with minimal whiplash.
Terror Tuesday is a weekly slash-and-thrash through the world of horror, and they’ve booked a number of holiday-tinged forever classics mixed in with new canon-busting entries, many of which are screening from new, sparkling scans. Highlights include Lake Mungo, Tales from the Hood, The Changeling, and a pre-Thanksgiving feast with the Sawyers.
Weird Wednesday is similarly a weekly exploration of exploitation, pop oddities, and underloved gems. (Think of it as channel-surfing a transmission from a better dimension). And like Terror Tuesday, they’ve loaded it...

"Who's responsible for fixing it? Who's responsible for paying for it?" A new official trailer is available for a documentary film called End of the Line, which first premiered last year at the Doc NYC Film Festival. It's finally out on VOD this June. If you live in New York City, you already know how awful the subway has become. If you don't live there, you've probably heard everyone else who does live there complaining about it. End of the Line is a character-driven political drama about the NYC subway crisis and a reckoning on its infrastructure. "Filmed from 2016 to 2021, this story is emblematic of tumultuous times felt across urban America, as the struggle to overcome decay gives way to existential peril in the 11th hour with the advent of a global pandemic." It features current NYC Mayor Eric Adams, actress / former NY gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso,...

From Warren Zevon and David Bowie to Gregg Allman and Pop Smoke and Mac Miller, posthumous albums recorded during an artist’s final months have become a sadly inevitable part of the pop landscape. That’s also the case with Things Happen That Way, the album Dr. John was working on when he died of a heart attack in June 2019. Now, three years after his passing, the album, which includes covers as well as some of his last newly written songs, will finally be heard when Rounder Records releases it on Sept.

The energy bouncing around San Francisco’s Chase Center for Metallica’s second 40th anniversary concert felt electric even before the band took the stage Sunday night. The first concert on Friday was all about anticipation — how could the thrash-metal pioneers commemorate their legacy in a fresh, exciting way? Well, that night they played a career-spanning set list in chronological order, blending big hits (“One,” “Nothing Else Matters”) with deep cuts (“Trapped Under Ice,” “Fixxxer”). Now that the group’s fans knew what to expect, Sunday night’s concert was all about catharsis.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 8
Well, damn. This is a real heartbreaker of an episode, isn’t it? If you haven’t heeded the spoiler warning above, here’s another one for you: Major Spoilers Ahead for this episode. If for some reason you jumped straight to this review without first watching “The Door,” I strongly recommend that you rectify that right now.
In a show that so often trucks in death, this one hurts a lot. Yes, John Dorie is dead.
Unlike Morgan’s somewhat ambiguous fate in last season’s “End of the Line,” there’s absolutely no shred of doubt here. And unlike Madison and Nick, there are no hinky time jumps, no red herrings. By hour’s end, John isn’t just dead, he’s undead—and we all know there’s no amount of plot armor...

Fear the Walking Dead season 6 delivered its first big reveal of the season at the very end of “Alaska.” After months of searching for his long lost wife, Dwight finally reunited with Sherry (Christine Evangelista) in a surprising manner, connecting via walkie basically out of nowhere. Whatever you might think of the way the reunion was executed — I found the matter-of-fact way Dwight ran into Sherry to be a bit underwhelming — this cliffhanger ending marks a major milestone in Dwight’s story of love lost. Now reunited with Sherry, perhaps the former Saviors can finally begin to do what Morgan begged that they do at the end of season 5: live.
But where has Sherry been all of this time? In case you don’t remember, she’s been missing since The Walking Dead season 7 episode “Hostiles and Calamities.” After freeing Daryl...

If you’ve watched Fear the Walking Dead’s season 6 premiere, “The End is the Beginning,” you’d be forgiven for experiencing a bit of déjà vu during Morgan’s return. Fear the Walking Dead is fond of killing off its protagonists—Madison, Nick, and Travis immediately spring to mind. So it was reasonable to assume that the events of last season’s finale, “End of the Line” spelled certain doom for Morgan.
But as it turns out, being grievously wounded and left for dead as walkers slowly drew closer was not enough to end Morgan’s journey. Not that there weren’t red flags pointing to his possible survival.
First of all, AMC made a very big deal when Morgan crossed over to Fear the Walking Dead to become its new star back in season 4. It just didn’t seem likely...

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 1
After everything the world has endured these last several months, it just doesn’t seem productive to harp on what did or didn’t work about last season. I’m even willing to give John Dorie’s San Antonio Split a pass at this point. If anything, we’re lucky we have anything new to watch at all, especially with some series being outright canceled because they’re too difficult to produce in the age of Covid-19.
With that being said, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the way “The End is the Beginning” kicked things off for Fear the Walking Dead‘s sixth season. And that’s certainly something I don’t think a lot of us expected—that a spin-off prequel to The Walking Dead would have legs. But here we are,...

Ripped arms, crazy wigs, backless dresses, crying while causing carnage … as Jessica Chastain stars in Ava, our writer wonders why female contract killers never wear clumpy shoes
You’re probably looking forward to seeing Scarlett Johannson and Florence Pugh in skintight neoprene and thigh-holsters. I know I am. But while Marvel’s postponed Black Widow movie hovers perpetually on the horizon like a black ops chopper, hitwoman completists can get their fix from Ava. Jessica Chastain plays a contract killer who, in between assignments, juggles father issues, sister issues, ex-boyfriend issues, alcohol issues and Ptsd. No wonder the stress is starting to show.
It’s hard not to have a sneaking admiration for the way Ava shoehorns in every hitwoman cliche in the book: posing as a sex worker, killing in a red backless frock, crying while killing, disco carnage. The only trope missing is Killing While Showing Stocking Tops,...

Variety reports that Lily Collins will be joining Simon Pegg in a new indie film called Inheritance.
“Inheritance explores what happens when the patriarch of a wealthy and powerful family suddenly passes away, leaving his wife and daughter with a shocking secret inheritance that threatens to unravel and destroy their lives."
The script was written by Matthew Kennedy, with Vaughn Stein behind the camera. Interestingly, Stein is coming off his debut film, Terminal, which also starred Pegg. Stein also worked with Highland Film Group to sell Terminal and will be working with them again on Inheritance, so it sounds like they all enjoyed the experience last time and are keen to do it again.
Collins’s recent projects include the (non-musical) BBC adaptation of Les Miserables soon to premiere on PBS (it just finished airing in the UK). She is also in the Ted Bundy biopic starring Zac Efron with...

The actor is in serious awards contention for his role in “Black Panther,” but also most recently starred in “Creed II,” “Fahrenheit 451” and “Kin.”
Josh Brolin
We all know Josh Brolin played the villain in both “Deadpool 2” And “Avengers: Infinity War” (which is a feat in itself), but he also starred in “Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado” and “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter.”
Tessa Thompson
Thompson seems to have been in every movie this year, and that’s for good reason: She starred in “Annihilation” alongside Natalie Portman, as well as “Sorry to Bother You,” “Little Woods,” “Furlough” and “Creed II.”
Patrick Wilson
Wilson is now just making the rounds as King Orm in James Wan’s “Aquaman,” but the actor also starred in “Insidious: The Last Key,” “”The Commuter,” “The Nun,” “Nightmare Cinema” and he is currently filming the Untitled “Annabelle” film.

After years of working as assistant director on numerous big budget films, director Vaughn Stein finally managed to realise his life-long ambition of writing and directing his own feature film.
