A new CNN documentary series that examines the 2003 Space Shuttle disaster is the latest effort by the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet to help its original-production arm regain momentum.
“Space Shuttle Columbia: The Final Flight” relies on footage that has never been broadcast before as well as exclusive interviews. The four-part series will air Sunday April 7 and Sunday April 14,both at 9 p.m. eastern, with two hours broadcast each evening. The program is co-produced by BBC and Mindhouse Productions.
“This chapter in the Space Shuttle Program captured the nation’s attention and is equally as captivating in the retelling, with storytelling fueled by those who lived it firsthand and newly revealed footage from the NASA archive,” said Amy Entelis, executive vice president of talent, CNN Originals, and creative development for CNN Worldwide, in a statement. “Our viewers have long been fascinated by stories of space exploration and this series is...

Piano-playing comedian and political satirist Mark Russell died Thursday at the age of 90, his wife Ali Russell said.
For more than 50 years, Russell took shots at all sectors of the political spectrum with stand-up monologues and song parodies. He was best known for his PBS specials, which he taped six times a year from 1975 to 2004. His routines, which he sang and performed on piano, covered the latest political news with timely lyrical updates of classic songs.
Russell was a member of the National Comedy Center Advisory Board, and was remembered by fellow member Jon Stewart, who said, “Mark Russell was a DC institution who did the hardest thing a comic can do… relentlessly and righteously mock his neighbors.”

Maybe people are interested in watching a show about the media.
The final broadcast of CNN’s long-running “Reliable Sources,” a show that examines the media industry and has aired on CNN for about three decades, was the most-watched program on the network’s Sunday schedule. CNN said last week it was canceling the program as it plans a revamp of parts of its Sunday schedule.
According to Nielsen, the final broadcast, anchored by host Brian Stelter, generated an average of 769,000 viewers overall, as well as 105,000 viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, the demographic most coveted by advertisers in news programming. “Reliable Sources” has more viewers overall than the 8 p.m. hour of Sunday’s “Newsroom,” which lured an average of 521,000 viewers and 78,000 in the advertisers demo. When W. Kamau Bell got started, he just wanted to make people laugh. At 21, he began with a goal of being a stand-up comedian. Then everything changed.
“We had a Black president, then we had an orange president,” he says. “I got motivated in different directions. It would be hard to explain to the young me what this is.”
Bell always knew he wanted to be in showbiz and even took a class in filmmaking at Columbia — but at that point, it wasn’t for him.
“It was back in the days when you had to cut film with razor blades and tape it together and I was like, ‘I don’t want to do any of this!’ I definitely had ideas,” he says, noting that eventually, he knew he wanted to do comedy but also talk about important issues.

Adler, who has been with CNN for 10 years, “has helped build a successful and recognized brand which has become an essential part of the fabric of CNN,” Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent and content development at CNN Worldwide, wrote in a memo to staff.
“With the expansion of our mandate to create premium long-form programming for CNN+, Jon’s experience developing distinctive content for CNN linear will now benefit our newest platform,” she wrote.

Stanley Tucci’s next trip to Italy will face a slight delay.
CNN will bump the debuts of a handful of looming original documentary projects due to its ongoing coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The second season of “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy,” will premiere on CNN later in the spring, as will the new series “Nomad with Carlton McCoy.” Meanwhile, the WarnerMedia network will push back the debut of “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” to Sunday March 13 at 9 p.m., a week later than its previously scheduled March 6 launch.
The network has built a new business out of documentaries and docuseries, but it must balance those projects with the demands of the news cycle.

W. Kamau Bell expected Bill Cosby to respond to the four-part Showtime docuseries that Bell has produced about the pioneering but now disgraced entertainer. But Bell was surprised by how Cosby chose to comment following the Jan. 22 Sundance Film Festival premiere of “We Need to Talk About Cosby.”
“On the list of things I thought he would call me, ‘PR Hack’ did not make my list,” says Bell, a stand-up comic and host of the CNN series “The United Shades of America” who began working on the docuseries in 2019. “So, I guess I give him credit for originality.”
“We Need to Talk About Cosby,” which debuts on Showtime Jan. 30, examines the comedian’s life, work and legacy in the wake of accusations of rape, drug-facilitated sexual assault and sexual battery by more than 60 women. Through interviews with commentators and through his own voice-over, Bell attempts to make sense of Cosby’s rise and dramatic downfall.

“The idea being if I’m to really learn the lessons of Bill Cosby then this is a part of that,” W. Kamau Bell says of the trenchant We Need to Talk About Cosby.
“This is about being smart, being aware, caring about your community,” adds the director of the four-episode docuseries, which is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday and on Showtime on January 30.
Already one of the most anticipated offerings of this year’s virtual festival, We Need to Talk About Cosby uses a very large canvas to paint a portrait of Bill Cosby, the onetime imprisoned and convicted sex offender, including the creation of his posture as “America’s Dad” decades ago and the contradictions that linger after two trials and Cosby’s early release last year.
To that end, the United Shades of America host employs a number of circumspect techniques to tell the sometimes-sordid tale.

Showtime has debuted the official trailer for W. Kamau Bell’s four-part documentary series “We Need to Talk About Cosby,” which is set to world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival this month. November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...

W. Kamau Bell has won three Emmys for his CNN show United Shades of America, a docuseries which sees him deploy incisive commentary and humor to explore complex social issues, especially ones relating to race and racism. His show is nominated again this year, for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special, but an industry giant stands in the way of him taking home a fourth Emmy: Oprah Winfrey.
Oprah and team are nominated for her much talked about Royal sit down, Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special.

According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, “Queer Eye” is the heavy favorite to win its fourth Emmy in a row for Best Structured Reality Program. If we’re right, that would tie for the most victories in the category. The record happens to be held by another nominee in the race this year, “Shark Tank,” which could block the Fab Five and extend its record instead. Which way do you think it will go?
“Queer Eye” gets leading odds of 31/10 with unanimous support from the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets as of this writing. The Netflix series has additional nominations for casting, directing, editing, cinematography, and Best Reality Host. “Shark Tank” has half as many total nominations: its only other bids are for casting and Best Reality Host. So chances are good that “Queer Eye” will continue its winning streak and match the all-time record,...

No Black artists have won more Primetime Emmys than multi-camera cinematographer Donald A. Morgan and reality star RuPaul Charles. As it happens they both have multiple nominations this year. Will they add to their historic awards hauls?
Morgan currently holds the record as the most awarded Black individual at the Emmys with 10 trophies on his mantel, and a whopping seven of those came for his lighting direction for “Home Improvement”. Recently he won three more times for his multi-camera cinematography on Netflix’s “The Ranch” and is the defending champion in his category.

The show that taught 1980s kids not to hide in an abandoned old refrigerator — or, at the very least, learn CPR in case one of your friends does sneak into one of those scary old latch iceboxes — will not continue with its revival. The updated “Punky Brewster,” which Peacock brought back as part of the streamer’s first-year lineup, will not be renewed for more episodes.
Peacock debuted all 10 episodes of the new “Punky Brewster,” featuring original star Soleil Moon Frye (who also served as an executive producer), on Feb. 25. The show reunited Frye as Punky with her old friend Cherie (Cherie Johnson), and updated her story to focus on Punky raising her three kids after separating from her husband (Freddie Prinze Jr.). A photographer like her foster dad Henry in the original series, Punky brings a foster child, Izzy (Quinn Copeland), into her home.

The Film Experience Team takes a look at Emmy categories.
Netflix won Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program last year with "Cheer." Can they repeat with "Selling Sunset" (above) or "Indian Matchmaking"?
By Christopher James
I’m done feeling guilty about it, I love reality TV. Weekly Bravo nights with friends have become a staple of my social calendar. Fill my TV screen with Real Housewives, realtors Selling on Sunset or hot singles looking for “blind” love. I want it all.
Admittedly, the Unstructured Reality Program category skews much less… colorful… than my tastes in reality TV. Shows like CNN’s United Shades of America and Discovery’s Deadliest Catch have won the prize three times each, the current record. They tend to go more for “inspirational” than “drama-filled.” They were able to split the difference a bit with two wins for Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, which was when...

Most of the Emmy producing credits in top program categories are yet to be announced, but we already know who will collect the trophies in the race for Best Unstructured Reality Program. Oprah Winfrey’s bombshell interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may not have pleased the British Crown, but it did appeal to Emmy voters. Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS PrimeTime Special earned an Emmy nomination today for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special.
Winfrey, along with executive producers Tara Montgomery, Terry Wood, co-EPs Brian Piotrowicz and Brad Pavone and producer Lindsay Flader, shared the nomination. More than 17 million people watched the sit-down interview when it aired in March. It subsequently was r-broadcast on CBS and also aired in the UK.
In the interview, Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, spoke of mental health struggles as she dealt with relentless attacks from the British tabloids and an unsympathetic or antagonistic royal household. She told Winfrey that she had contemplated suicide at one particularly low point. The couple reflected on racist invectives directed at Markle by the British press and...

Update, 1:03 Pm Pt: Rick Santorum has responded to the pushback he’s received over comments he made about Native American culture.

Peacock’s “Punky Brewster” revival is getting a little more power with the addition of “NYPD Blue” alum Sharon Lawrence, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
The streaming series is a continuation of the iconic ’80s sitcom about a bright young girl raised by a foster dad, featuring Punky (played by original “Punky” star Soleil Moon Frye) as a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track when she meets Izzy (Quinn Copeland), a young girl in the foster system who reminds Punky a lot of her younger self.
Lawrence will guest star on Episodes 9 and 10 of Season 1 of the “Punky Brewster” revival, which launches Thursday on Peacock, playing Susan, a woman who helps Izzy find her lost dog at an ’80s themed block party that Punky organizes.

Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

Netflix won its first Emmy in the unstructured reality category with Cheer, the reality docuseries following the Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer team.
This comes 24 hours after Jerry Harris, one of the stars of the show, was arrested on child pornography charges.
Cheer, which launched in January, beat Netflix compatriot Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up, VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked, Food Network’s Amy Schumer Learns To Cook: Lunch Break and Pasta Night and HBO’s We’re Here in the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program category.
It comes a year after Somebody Feed Phil scored Netflix’s first Emmy nomination in this category last year and comes after CNN’s United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell won the category for the last three years.
Cheer creator, exec producer and director Greg Whiteley, applauded his “team of incredibly talented people” that make the show.

A few weeks ago, WWE superstar John Cena earned a Daytime Emmy nomination: Best Game Show as a producer of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” on Nickelodeon, which he also hosts. And pretty soon he could be joined by a couple other sports entertainment alums: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin are both on the ballot for Best Reality Host.
Johnson is a contender for “The Titan Games,” NBC’s athletic competition series in which men and women go through endurance challenges in the hopes of winning a $100,000 grand prize. The show was first eligible last year, and though it wasn’t nominated, it’s the kind of physical competition that academy members might gravitate towards having nominated “American Ninja Warrior” for the last four years in a row. And the current season started airing in May, so it would have been fresh in mind...
