Belt-tightening and cost-cutting continues across Hollywood as the Peak TV era has come to a close, and another legacy TV brand is being shuttered as a result.
Sony Television is shutting down its TriStar Television banner, which recently has been responsible for series like “Lucky Hank” (AMC), “The Afterparty” (Apple TV+), “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” (Showtime), “The Last Tycoon” (Amazon), and “Good Girls Revolt” (Amazon). In its heyday, TriStar TV produced and distributed “The Nanny,” “Mad About You,” and many more series.
A source says the decision is part of a larger shift around Sony Pictures Television’s boutique labels, not unlike the shuttering of the Gemstone brand several years ago, and that the hope is to weave all of TriStar’s values and goals into the bigger studio.
As THR first reported, TriStar TV’s active productions will be absorbed into the larger Sony Television operation,...

After a nine-year revival, Sony’s TriStar Television label, which was behind such series as The Afterparty, is being phased out again. Its two top executives, EVP Jennifer Turner, who ran the unit for the past two and a half years, and SVP Nicole Norwood, will be departing the studio. TriStar Television has no current series on the air. Its development slate will be taken over by Sony Pictures Television’s drama development team.
This marks the second such move of centralizing development under Katherine Pope since she became President of Sony Pictures TV in July 2022. The TV studio’s other boutique label, Gemstone, was folded into Spt in November 2022.
After being dormant for more than a decade, the TriStar Television brand was revived in 2015 as a boutique production unit within Sony Pictures Television. Suzanne Patmore Gibbs led the division from its relaunch until her sudden death in 2018, making it...

Other staff cuts are not expected as a result of TriStar TV closing and the Sony TV drama department will take oversight of current TriStar’s current TV projects.
Sources tell Variety that the move to shut down TriStar TV, which also produced series including “On Becoming a God in Central Florida,” “Good Girls Revolt” and “The Last Tycoon,” is part of an overall strategy shift at Sony Pictures Entertainment regarding its boutique labels.

Grace Gummer has been cast in the “Let the Right One In” pilot at Showtime, Variety has learned.
She joins previously announced cast members Demián Bichir and Anika Noni Rose. The series centers on Mark (Bichir), a father and his 12-year-old daughter, Eleanor, whose lives were changed forever 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Locked in at age 12, perhaps forever, Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with the minimal amount of human blood she needs to stay alive.
Gummer will play the role of Claire. The heiress of a pharmaceutical empire, Claire is a brilliant scientist who turned down the family’s billion-dollar business to pursue a humbler, nobler career in disease research. But her life gets turned upside down when her estranged, ailing father summons her home and reveals a terrible secret.

Written by Wilson and directed by Betsy Thomas, Bucktown centers on Amy (Woodward), who, after being dumped by her boyfriend and kicked out of her apartment on the eve of a big promotion, finds refuge at her mom’s house in the blue-collar neighborhood where she grew up.
Gonzalez will play Jessie, Amy’s opinionated best friend who works beside her as an assistant at the ad agency.
Capanna is Jodeci, Amy’s quirky, off-beat seventh-grade niece. She’s had a few knocks in life, but that hasn’t dimmed her optimism.

By the time the credits roll at the end of this week’s This Is Us, you’ll either be supremely bummed or significantly uplifted. After the year we’ve had/are having, I’m choosing the latter.
The hour focuses on Nicky, both in the present and throughout his very sad past. It’s one thing to know that his Vietnam War experience scarred and shaped Jack’s brother’s life in profound and lasting ways. It’s another thing to watch that play out in a series of near-misses, poor choices and deep regrets that pile up as the years pass.

When I was a child, my best friend, who happened to be a boy, loved “Toy Story,” to the extent that it was literally the only movie we would watch and a good amount of our conversations revolved around the movie and its characters. After one such screening, he asked me which character I would want to be. I was as dumbfounded as a talkative small child could be; it’s not like I didn’t enjoy the movie, I did, but I didn’t relate to or want to be any of the characters. So I responded, Andy’s mom. A character who has few lines and even less screen time. I didn’t see myself in Woody’s fragile masculinity or relate to Buzz’s single-minded exuberance. But my inability to relate to the movie’s main characters never hindered my enjoyment of it, or stopped me from continuing to patron the sequels.
