You guys can back off David Zaslav for a minute: Bob Iger says Disney too has “killed a few projects.” The difference? They’ve done it quietly and at (presumably) a much earlier stage than, say, “Batgirl” or “Coyote vs. Acme,” the two most infamous (and most egregious) last-minute movie cancellations in recent Hollywood history.
“When we talk about improving our film slate there are really three approaches, one is you have to kill things you no longer believed in and that’s not easy in this business, because either you’ve gotten started, you have some sunk costs ,or it’s a relationship with either your employees or with the creative community, and it’s not an easy thing, but you’ve got to make those tough calls,” Disney CEO Iger said Tuesday at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. “We’ve actually made those tough calls,...

Let’s start at the end. We’re at the base of the Ngorongoro Crater, a two-million-year-old collapsed volcano in Tanzania. A heavy downpour is thumping the roof of our safari vehicle. Yes, it’s raining in Africa. Before we begin the steep ascent up the walls of the crater along muddy brick roads, our tour guide breaks and turns off the ignition. He gestures toward an unseasonably lush clearing where a committee of elephants is assembled to wish us adieu.
For the last week, we’ve been on a press trip in the Serengeti with one unique wrinkle: National Geographic embedded our excursions with the creative talent behind their new natural world series, Queens. In addition to local guides, we were accompanied by National Geographic’s filmmakers, who are brave enough to tackle assignments like night shoots in open-sided vehicles amongst lions and hyenas. We were in safe hands.

Music and movies will take turns being Kid Cudi’s main creative priority. The musician announced on Friday that his next studio album is nearly complete, but he isn’t looking to release it until 2026. His latest release, the long-delayed Insano, arrived last month, which makes 2025 a movie year in his alternating schedule.
“My next album is already about 80% done, and it’ll be out in 2026. As always, we’re takin it someplace new,” Cudi wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Just wanted to let yall know, expect an album from...

Phil Lord has a question for David Zaslav:
Is it anticompetitive if one of the biggest movie studios in the world shuns the marketplace in order to use a tax loophole to write off an entire movie so they can more easily merge with one of the other biggest movie studios in the world? Cause it Seems anticompetitive.
— Phil Lord (@philiplord) February 10, 2024
Lord’s tweet, of course, is about “Coyote vs. Acme.” Warner Bros. Discovery shelved the completed film, a la “Batgirl” — although, unlike that DC Comics production, the Looney Tunes movie was supposedly shopped and according to some reports, received offers. Wbd denies the reports of official offers being made.
Into the Accounting-Verse, we go.
A person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire that Warner Bros. screened the film for a dozen distributors. Of these, 10 passed; the other two expressed interest in acquiring it, but for less...

Exclusive: Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi (Entergalactic) will star in and produce the new animated feature Slime which will serve as animator Jeron Braxton’s (Baby Demon) feature directorial debut. Brian Ash (The Boondocks) penned the script and will executive produce.
The project hails from Mescudi’s production banner Mad Solar alongside Hammerstone Studios and Capstone Global.
Slime is described as a classic monster movie decked out in fashion-forward video game skins that are wickedly satirical, scary as hell and trippy Af. In a not-too-distant, but all-too-dystopian future, Muna, an optimistic, but broke young woman, signs up for a paid medical trial. Hope turns to horror when she is unknowingly injected with a foreign creature’s slime and begins to have visions she does not understand and unleash destructive powers she cannot control.

Christopher Nolan made headlines earlier this month when he took a playful jab at streaming platforms while discussing the upcoming home release of “Oppenheimer.” The atomic bomb drama, which grossed a staggering $950 million in theaters worldwide, is hitting Blu-ray and other digital platforms this month. Nolan said at a recent “Oppenheimer” screening that it’s important to own the film on Blu-ray so that “no evil streaming service can come steal it from you.”
“It was a joke when I said it. But nothing’s a joke when it’s transcribed onto the internet,” Nolan recently told The Washington Post in a follow-up interview.
“There is a danger, these days, that if things only exist in the streaming version they do get taken down, they come and go,” the director added.

If your favorite movie was pulled as part of Disney+’s cost-saving measures earlier this year, there’s a good chance you can find it on platforms like Prime Video now.
The handbook for turning streaming losses into profits is fairly short. It really only has three main steps: launch an ad-supported tier, raise prices on ad-free customers, and remove titles from streaming platforms that no longer drive sufficient engagement. Disney can check all three items off their list this year; the company is preparing to execute another round of price increases on Thursday, Oct. 12, and has cut big swaths of content from Disney+ and Hulu alike.
Some films cut from Disney+ are now available to rent or buy for as little as $3.99. Era of deepest cuts on Disney+ is likely over. Movies are available on platforms like Prime Video, iTunes and more.

Disney started pulling content from its direct-to-consumer streaming platform Disney+ earlier this year, following the streaming content bubble bursting spectacularly. Now some of it is beginning to reappear – on paid platforms.
Seasons of shows were unceremoniously zapped from the app, along with several high profile made-for-Disney+ movies, including “Crater,” which was erased a little more than a month after debuting on the platform. Those movies are back – and available to rent or buy on the PVOD platform of your choice
Disney didn’t publicize this; they just showed up with as little fanfare as when they were removed in the first place.
The removed titles now available to rent (for around $4) or buy (for $20) are “Artemis Fowl,” “Better Nate Than Never,” “Crater,” “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “Flora & Ulysses,” “Stargirl,” “Hollywood Stargirl,” “The One and Only Ivan,” “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made” and documentary “Wolfgang.” Disney+ original films that have...

If there's one thing to be said for the Disney Studios Showcase at Destination D23 this year, it's that it gave those of us on the weekend news shift a nice quiet start to Sunday.
First, to give some perspective, here's a quick recap of the headlines from last year's D23 Expo. The 2022 event featured the announcement of two new Pixar movies and Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Wish," the first footage from "Elemental," the first footage from the live-action "Little Mermaid" remake, Rachel Zegler presenting the first teaser for "Snow White," Jude Law presenting a first look at Disney's "Peter Pan & Wendy," and the entire original cast of "Enchanted" showing up to introduce the trailer for "Disenchanted." On the Marvel Studios front, the showcase included a first look at "The Marvels," footage from "Loki" season 2, a preview of "Werewolf By Night," and a teaser for "Secret Invasion," among other treats.

Movies and TV shows regularly come and go from streaming services; we all know this, but the trend has taken a disturbing turn in the past year, with content being pulled, sometimes permanently, just to save a few bucks. I know, it’s just business, but for the hundreds of creatives who have had their hard-work yanked from existence, it hurts. Disney+ has taken things to a new level as they have pulled Crater from the service, a movie which was released on May 12th… less than two months ago.
There’s no official word on why Crater was removed from Disney+, but The Independent believes that it’s “an attempt to cut costs relating to licencing deals.” The decision has sparked an outcry on social media, with some wondering why they’re paying for the service that can’t even keep their own content.

Disney+ fans can be forgiven for wondering just what will disappear from the service next. It’s been nearly two months since Disney executives announced during a conference call with investors and analysts that it would start removing titles from its streaming services in order to cut costs. In that time, dozens of titles have been pulled from Disney+ and Hulu.

Update, July 4: Another victim of Disney’s cost-cutting on the streaming front has emerged: “Crater,” a sci-fi adventure film about a group of children that hijack a rover before a member of the group relocates to a new planet. The film, starring Mckenna Grace and Isaiah Russell-Bailey with a featured role played by Kid Cudi, drew mostly positive reviews around its debut on the streaming service on May 12. Roughly seven weeks later, “Crater” has been pulled from Disney+.
The original report follows.
Disney’s content culling from Disney+ and Hulu is coming as early as next week — with the media company pulling off more than 50 titles, including series “Willow,” “The Mysterious Benedict Society” and “Dollface,” and movies such as “The One and Only Ivan.”

The biggest strength of Crater has to be its final ten minutes, which feel like savoring a great dessert after what was a decent meal at best. To a great extent, it feels like a silly attempt at a Stranger Things recreation in a different setting, especially the way the five main characters are written. Sure, kids are all the same, but these five are an awful lot like Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max. There is no Eleven, though, and no demogorgon mind flayer stuff, either. For a movie that is set entirely on the moon, the villains here are rather wordly: class struggle, capitalism, and the exploitation of the poor.
But seamlessly integrating all these in the narrative of a Disney movie, whose target audience is mainly kids and teenagers, is a herculean task. And the movie couldn’t exactly pull off Oscar Martinez explaining “what does surplus...

A bunch of nosy kids get into trouble looking for things they shouldn’t be in Disney’s latest sci-fi adventure film Crater. Directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez and written by John Griffin, the film follows five friends as they travel to a moon crater to find treasure in the 23rd century.
The film starts with Caleb (Isaiah Russll-Bailey), Addison (Mckenna Grace), Dylan (Billy Barratt), Borney (Orson Hong), and Marcus (Thomas James Boyce III) trying to hijack a space rover in the middle of a lockdown due to an oncoming meteor shower. As the group argues why their plan isn’t working, Caleb thinks about how his deceased father, Michael (played by Scott Mescudi). Crater is a film starring Mckenna Grace, Billy Barratt, Isaiah Russell-Bailey and Orson Hon.
Disney, when it does what it knows how to do, does it to perfection, and these films for young people have managed, by repeating the formula, to master it to the exact level of emotion required, almost becoming a cultural icon. Crater does not limit itself to repeating the formula story wise, but it does it in the tempos, achieving the desired effect: to win over the viewer for good.
Others will say it is sentimental, superfluous and a space adventure to forget.
It’s up to them.
As a production, as always and we never get tired of saying it (and it also serves as filler), it’s magnificent on a technical level.

With schools finishing up for their big Summer break many of those kids are dreaming of getting away for a while. How about the ultimate “getaway” from …the planet? It’s not that wild of a fantasy, as this new Disney+ adventure flick offers a look at a colony, almost a small city, on the moon, our big destination for over 50 years now. But how do the kids living up there take a break from the indoors (with plenty of oxygen)? Well, for the five kids in this story, they’re itching to sneak away for a fun frolic at a nearby (it’s not really a walk) Crater.
When the film begins, those kids are sneaking around the transport bay under the dome of an underground lunar colony in the not-too-distant future. The loudspeakers are blaring out an alert that a meteor shower is imminent so everyone needs to...

Within the first four minutes of Disney+ Original film “Crater,” we already have a cavalcade of movie tropes to contend with: dead parents, spaceships, and a 72-hour ticking clock for one newly-orphaned tween to say farewell to his friend group. At least we know Disney hasn’t shied away from its classic storylines.
Part “Guardians of the Galaxy” and part “Goonies” with a dash of “Outer Banks,” “Crater” centers on Caleb Channing (a well-cast Isaiah Russell-Bailey), who was raised on a lunar mining colony by his single dad (Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi). After the death of his father, Caleb becomes a ward of the state, poised to reap the “death benefits” from his father’s work contract with the colony. As part of said benefits, Caleb is supposed to be put in a cryosleep and transported to distant planet Omega, which takes 75 years to reach.

Some straight-to-streaming offerings inspire viewers to bemoan the movie’s fate, wishing it had received a proper theatrical release — to be seen the way movies are meant to be seen, and by the widest audience possible. “Crater” isn’t one of those, but neither is this Disney+ original mere algorithm-created dross. Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s lunar adventure follows five young friends as they hijack a rover to visit an enigmatic crater for one last hurrah before one of them leaves the moon forever. It’s sci-fi informed by a Gen-z sensibility, with a particular focus on those Zoomers who can’t imagine a bright future on the planet they actually inhabit — an ever-expanding demographic, one imagines.

Exclusive: Lifetime has ordered a sequel to its 2018 original movie The Bad Seed, with Mckenna Grace set to reprise her role as Emma. Grace co-wrote the script with her father, Ross Burge and the 2018 film’s writer, Barbara Marshall.
Rob Lowe and Grace starred in Lifetime’s The Bad Seed, written by Marshall and directed by Lowe, which reimagined the cult 1956 psychological horror film that was based on the best-selling novel by William March and its stage adaptation by Maxwell Anderson.
In the sequel, Grace plays 15-year-old Emma, a seemingly typical teenaged girl who is anything but that. Set several years after the murderous events of the first movie which left her father (Lowe) dead, Emma is now living with her aunt Angela and navigating high school. Angela’s husband begins to suspect that Emma may not be as innocent as she appears and suggests sending her off to boarding school.
