Exclusive: After landing the villain role in Ryan Coogler’s next project, Jack O’Connell continues to fill out his dance card. Sources tell Deadline that he is set to join the cast of 28 Years Later, a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes also star in the pic, which is part of a planned trilogy.
Danny Boyle is directing the first movie from a script by Alex Garland. Sony will release the film in theaters globally.
While plot details are vague, the original 28 Days Later, directed by Boyle, written by Garland and released in 2002, centered on a bicycle courier (played by Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover the world had been overrun with zombies following the outbreak of a virus. The pic grossed more than $82 million worldwide and led to the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, on which Boyle and Garland served solely as EPs.

Back when he was finishing “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, Jeff Daniels was ready to leave show business. “I’m done,” he told Jim Carrey. “You can’t stop man,” Carrey said. “You can’t, you’re creative, you’re going to create something, you’ve got to keep creating. That’s what we do!”
These days, Carrey’s off in Hawaii painting. And when Daniels is not acting, he’s writing songs and plays, which he mounts at his Michigan hometown’s Purple Rose Theatre Company. “It’s what keeps me going,” Daniels told me on Zoom. “It keeps me alive. It’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s helped me between the phone calls for the acting jobs. Because you can go insane staring at that phone. They’ll call you when they need you. Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.
Michael Starr (New York Post) stated: “My advice is to sit back and enjoy Douglas as he admirably chews the scenery and...

Exclusive: After six years as a manager at More/Medavoy, Stephen Belden is going it alone, having launched his own management and production company, Death Wish Entertainment.
“The dream,” Belden said, “has always been to work with a core group of clients that I absolutely adore as artists and as human beings and to be able to produce projects with and for those clients. With this company I get to focus on exactly that and I couldn’t be more excited.”
Belden explained that the name Death Wish is “a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fact that it’s harder than ever to be working in the entertainment industry right now,” underscoring at the same time that he “couldn’t be more optimistic about what the future holds for the up and coming generation of actors, writers, directors, and producers that I work with.”
Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to those at his former company.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct – have been developing a new project in secret. Coogler has written the script for this project, which is being described as both a genre picture and a period piece that Coogler will be directing and Jordan is attached to star in. The project is set up at Warner Bros., is expected to have a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 7, 2025. We still don’t know exactly what this movie is going to be about… but Deadline reports that Jack O’Connell is in talks to play the villain in it.

Exclusive: Jack O’Connell (Ferrari) is in talks to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler’s untitled event film for Warner Bros, sources tell Deadline.
While both the plot of the film and O’Connell’s role remain under wraps, we’re told it’s a period genre pic in which he’ll be playing the villain. Deadline was first to tell you about Warners’ acquisition of the project, following a heated bidding war.
The film brings Jordan and Coogler together following their collaboration on the Creed and Black Panther franchises, having first worked together on the acclaimed Sundance pic Fruitvale Station. It’s also the second project from the collaborators that Warner Bros Film Group co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have championed, after greenlighting the box office hit Creed III during their time at MGM.
Coogler is writing and will also produce alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.

What happens when you take a San Francisco detective and retire him to the South of France? When the rights to the Dashiell Hammett character made famous by Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon” (1941) became available, writer-director Scott Frank, perhaps emboldened by his Emmy-winning successes with his western series “Godless” and chess sensation “The Queen’s Gambit,” convinced his friend Tom Fontana (“Oz”) to co-create a limited series, “Monsieur Spade” about an older Sam Spade in France.
These two writers had a blast making Spade (Clive Owen) middle-aged and grumpy — his doctor wants him to give up smoking. He’s grieving his lost wife, a Frenchwoman (Chiara Mastroianni) who left him a lovely estate. He reluctantly acts as a father figure for a teenage girl (Cara Bossom) whose mother Brigid O’Shaughnessy sent him eight years ago to Bozouls to deliver her child to her father (Jonathan Zaccaï). For a character who is at the center of one full-length story, The Maltese Falcon, Sam Spade is as iconic as it gets in the world of detective fiction. Dashiell Hammett’s book, and John Huston’s 1941 movie adaptation with Humphrey Bogart, loom impossibly large over the gumshoe genre, to the point where Spade is just as famous as Philip Marlowe and Mike Hammer, who have appeared in far more novels and films over the years.

The iconic private detective famously played by Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon is coming to AMC in Monsieur Spade (premiering this Sunday at 9/8c), with Clive Owen taking on the role. No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story (“Erin Brockovich”) and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey (“The Girlfriend Experience”).
In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie “Behind the Candelabra” (which isn’t included on this list of big screen outings). He’s also been nominated twice as a director on “The Knick,” as a cinematographer on “Behind the Candelabra” and as a producer on “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” “His Way” and “Godless.”

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”
Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). “You need spiritual realignment— you’re too far from Christ,” has become an increasingly rare statement to hear in contemporary horror films, yet in this year’s Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism— in which a woman with diagnosed schizophrenia is subjected to a violent exorcism of her internal “demons” that goes awry— once again, we’re being confronted with just how scary it must be to completely lose autonomy over one’s own body and belief system. Exorcism movies enjoyed a long streak of popularity in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, as movies like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Last Exorcism, and anything else with the “E” word in the title seemed to attract both the casual and devout horror crowds and dominated box offices. But for the last handful of years, mainstream horror has largely evaded these types of movies, save for The Conjuring franchise and things less...

If you like narrative storytelling of any kind, either in movies or TV, chances are you’re a fan of writer/director/creator Scott Frank, whether you know it or not. Frank had success in movies—he’s a two-time Oscar nominee for writing “Out of Sight” (1998) and “Logan”— and earned the respect of peers like Steven Soderbergh and Tony Gilroy, among many others, but it’s arguably not until Netflix started expanding their movie ideas into series form—which is precisely what Frank did with 2017’s Western “Godless,” that he really started to stretch his wings and shine.

Bye-bye, Peak TV. After more than a decade of unprecedented production growth, the international television industry is bracing for an era of tighter budgets and more bean counting.
“Instead of subscriber growth at all costs, now the focus is on production and investment and getting the balance sheet right,” says Cathy Payne, CEO of Banijay Rights, the sales arm of the production giant behind reality TV hits Big Brother and high-end dramas Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. “I hate using the phrase because everyone says it, but the focus now is on ‘fewer, better, bigger shows.’ ”
The variety of shows on offer at this year’s global TV market in Cannes, MIPCOM, suggests every buyer, at every budget, should find something to fill their slots. And while THR’s annual hot list of the market’s best new drama series ranges from a by-the-book NBC procedural to an erotic comedy...

“You’re like one of those brainwashed missionaries,” Georgia Eyers’ character Lara fumes to her husband Ron (Dan Ewing). Her remark cuts deep into Ron’s faith. But he never wavers. He doubles down on his delusions, even if they harm those he loves. The conversation, during which Lara convulses and seemingly switches personalities, brings up questions about blind religion, science, and mental health. Throughout Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism, director Nick Kozakis confronts extremism and how it so easily spreads like a contagion.
Set in 1994, the film takes place in Eastfield, Australia and follows Lara and Ron as they contend with Lara’s ailing mental health and Ron’s belief that it’s a spiritual matter. Don’t let last year’s Emmys, where “The White Lotus” star had it in the bag as much as any nominee possibly could, cloud one’s judgment of the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie race. This is often one of the most unpredictable acting categories year-to-year.

Jeff Daniels is ready to tell his story. The actor, who has been in everything from “The Purple Rose of Cairo” to “Dumb and Dumber,” is readying his audio-only memoir, “Alive and Well Enough,” as a 12-part series for Audible, with the first season debuting in September (with a second season on the way).
According to the official release “Alive and Well Enough” “mixes storytelling, original music and performance, [and] is like nothing you have heard before.” Would it be too much to ask for several chapters devoted to the making of “Arachnophobia?”
“Audible is the only place where I get to do everything I do,” said Daniels in an official statement. “’Alive and Well Enough’ is an audio adventure of an accidental artist who one day looked up and realized he had a sense of humor, a passion for writing and stories to tell.”

Not every TV and film production will stop amid dual strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America. A host of projects stopped work after writers went on strike against media companies for better pay, streaming data transparency and protections against artificial intelligence (among other issues), and many more have paused since actors walked out on July 14.
There are exceptions, however. SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules allow for work on productions covered under different agreements, and the union can grant waivers or sign interim agreements with independent productions. Below is a list of TV shows and films that fall under those designations; this story will be updated as more productions earn waivers.

Bulgarian multi-hyphenate Stephan Komandarev completes his trilogy on social problems and moral ills in contemporary Bulgaria with “Blaga’s Lessons,” world premiering in Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s Crystal Globe competition. Heretic is the sales agent.
After “Directions” (2017), which centers on tough times for some Sofia taxi drivers over a long and eventful night, and “Rounds” (2019), about police officers patrolling the capital, Komandarev and his co-writer Simeon Ventsislavov use an older woman duped by a telephone scam to look at issues afflicting their parents’ generation. Komandarev says: “The Bulgarian pensioners turned out to be the real victims of the so-called ‘transition’ (the time from 1989 to today.) These people, who have worked and created persistently all their lives, have lost basic safety and security, normal food, adequate medical care, heating, etc.”

McNairy’s filmography includes Ben Affleck’s Argo, Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, David Michod’s The Rover and War Machine, Lenny Abrahmson’s Frank, Zack Snyder’s Batman vs Superman, Mike Mills’ C’mon C’mon,...

The company noted that it has invested almost $1.5 billion per year producing films and television series across the United Kingdom – up half a billion dollars each year.
“It’s no secret that the UK produces some of the world’s most iconic entertainment,” Netflix’s vice president of UK Content Anne Mensah said in a statement. “This is true for Netflix, too – from ‘Top Boy’ to ‘The Crown,’ ‘Heartstopper’ to ‘The Tinder Swindler’ – our productions are some of the buzziest, most watched and zeitgeist defining in the world.”

You may not readily group Cheryl Strayed with Elizabeth II, Elvis Presley or Annie Wilkes, but the self-help author could soon have at least one thing in common with them. If Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”) receives an Emmy nomination for playing a version of the role that nabbed Reese Witherspoon (“Wild”) an Oscar bid in 2015, Strayed will join that list of real and fictional personas whose depictions have garnered multiple actors awards recognition across media.
Two-time Emmy winner Merritt Wever could also crash the Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress race for playing Strayed’s mother, a role that earned Laura Dern her second Oscar nomination. According to Gold Derby’s Emmy odds, the two are safer bets than the show itself, which has yet to crack the Limited Series top 10.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “Love,” the finale of the limited series “Tiny Beautiful Things,” now streaming on Hulu.
Hulu’s “Tiny Beautiful Things” ends on a serene note, with a hospital bed in the middle of a horse pasture and a single spoken word: “love.”
The moment is one of the few shared between Kathryn Hahn and Merritt Wever in the limited series, which is based on author Cheryl Strayed’s life and her time writing an advice column called “Dear Sugar.”
Wever plays Frankie, the free-spirited mother of Hahn’s character Clare, who (like Strayed’s mother) dies suddenly of lung cancer at the age of 45. The story primarily takes place in the present day as a grown-up Clare (played by Hahn) grapples with the trauma of having lost her mother, while Wever’s character exists in flashbacks to the 1990s when Clare was in her...

HBO’s five-part limited series “White House Plumbers” has been confirmed for a May 1 launch date, which means Lena Headey could have another shot at finally ascending the Emmy throne.
Headey is arguably overdue for an Emmy win after being paid dust for her iconic portrayal of Cersei Lannister on “Game of Thrones.” She received five — and to date her only — nominations for the hit fantasy series, in the drama supporting actress category, but was denied the crown at every turn. Unfortunately for her and the rest of the “Thrones” cast, the acting branch of the TV academy didn’t care to reward the four-time Best Drama Series champ outside of Peter Dinklage, whose fan-favorite turn as Tyrion Lannister earned him Best Drama Supporting Actor bids for all eight seasons and a record four statuettes. It also didn’t help Headey that her character, the ice-cold, cunning ruler of the Seven Kingdoms,...
