In 2015, producer Kevin J. Walsh was clearing out a last-minute parking lot location for Manchester by the Sea’s most memorable scene, and just seven years later, he found himself on one of several battlefields that would define Ridley Scott’s latest historical epic, Napoleon.
Financed by Apple Original Films and distributed by Sony, the Joaquin Phoenix-led film just outperformed expectations with $32.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving window, and Walsh believes that Napoleon’s production and distribution arrangement is the ideal way forward for streamers who want to make big-budget plays. With the possible exception of Netflix, the remaining streamers haven’t been able to justify the expense of streaming-exclusive blockbusters, but Napoleon has now established that streaming services and traditional studios can work together in mutually beneficial ways.

Anya Taylor-Joy has been in increasingly high demand over the past few years. The 26-year-old's star began to rise with roles in projects like "The Witch," "Split," "Glass," "Peaky Blinders," and "The Queen's Gambit." She's also starred in movies like "Thoroughbreds," "Emma," "The New Mutants," "The Northman," "The Menu," and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," and she's also been cast as Furiosa in the highly anticipated "Mad Max: Fury Road" prequel.
Over the years, Taylor-Joy has mostly kept her dating life low-key, though details have emerged here and there. In 2018, before "The Queen's Gambit" made her a household name, Taylor-Joy told The Guardian that she purposely chooses not to share too much about her personal life. "There's a beauty in being anonymous," she said. "There's a reason why we're actors, we're playing other people so I think the idea of someone being interested in me, I'm quite a private person,...

The “invisible hand of the marketplace” is a favorite term of laissez-faire globalized economics, but Landscape With Invisible Hand is a dark comedy science fiction tale about a teen-aged artist living on a near-future Earth transformed by twenty years of occupation by creatures from another planet. We expect invaders from space to be scary monster with big weapons but what if the space aliens who came to conquer the Earth weren’t monsters with ray guns but annoying, harmless-looking bureaucrats who used economic soft power and brought advanced technology which made most human jobs obsolete?

"At some point it starts being domination." Indeed - and I wonder if that's where we are now with society? MGM has unveiled a final official trailer for the audacious sci-fi film Landscape with Invisible Hand, directed by Cory Finley (of Thoroughbreds and Bad Education previously). The film opens in US theaters nationwide this Friday, on August 18th. This is adapted from the book of the same name by M.T. Anderson (which comes highly recommended), and it first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (our review). "Welcome to the future, where the entertainment is us." When an occupying alien species' (who are called Vuvv) bureaucratic rule and advanced technology leaves most of Earth impoverished and unemployed, two teenagers hatch a risky plan to ensure their families' futures. It's a clever commentary on capitalism and art and how we sacrifice our integrity just to make money. Even though...

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Love is a purely human emotion that can’t be faked — such is the theme at the center of the first trailer for Cory Finley’s “Landscape With Invisible Hands,” released Tuesday.
The film is based on the book by M.T. Anderson and, per the official synopsis, it takes place years into a benevolent occupation of Earth by an alien species. “When 17-year-old artist Adam Campbell (Asante Blackk) and new girlfriend Chloe Marsh (Kylie Rogers) discover the Vuvv are particularly fascinated with human love and will pay for access to it, they decide to livestream their budding romance to make extra cash for themselves and their families. Life is good, for a while, until the flame of their teenage love fizzles out and they’re forced to make very different, absurdly life-altering sacrifices for their families.”
The trailer looks like a quirky romantic comedy, albeit with an alien invasion in the middle of it.

The Sundance Film Festival has wrapped up, and overall their first year back in person since the pandemic was a rousing success. Several of the movie’s big films have been snapped up for distribution in record-breaking deals and will be seen soon. However, the two biggest deals (so far) have been for streaming services, so while you may not be seeing a lot of these on the big screen, but they should create a lot of buzz when the drop.
Here’s a list of highlights from the festival and when you can expect to see them:
Flora and Son
John Carney’s follow-up to his trilogy of music-driven romances, Once, Begin Again and Sing Street, was one of the most beloved films to play Park City this year. Eve Hewson, Jack Reynor and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in this story of a divorced mother in Ireland who signs up...

Charisma, star talent, and a notably humble personality: At just 26 years old, Anya Taylor-Joy seems to have it all. “The Queen’s Gambit” starlet has become the face of Viktor & Rolf, garnered an Emmy nomination, and won a Golden Globe award — all in just six short years after her first feature role. The Miami-born, Argentine-raised, and London-based international film star landed on the scene in 2015 with Robert Eggers’ directorial debut “The Witch.” The breakout role from the Sundance hit cemented Taylor-Joy’s striking screen presence, with IndieWire’s review calling her “standout” performance “exquisitely ominous and unequivocally haunting.”
Taylor-Joy quickly became an indie darling with subsequent films “Morgan” opposite Kate Mara, “Thoroughbreds” by writer-director Cory Finley, and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” and “Glass.” In an interview with IndieWire, she lamented that she refuses to be typecast, but rather follows the “magic feeling” of reading the right part.

What would life on Earth look like in a future where humans are still very much alive but no longer in charge? Landscape With Invisible Hand — directed by Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds, Bad Education) and based on the 2017 young adult novel by M.T. Anderson — depicts a depressed, dryly humorous society crumbling away at a steady pace. Little aliens called “the Vuvv” have landed and torpedoed the economy, leaving most humans either underemployed or out of work entirely. The wealthy have already abandoned the planet to live “up there” with the aliens, while everyone still on Earth is left to forage for what’s left of the money, land and food. Instead of fearsome creatures with horrifying lasers and military might, the Vuvv are tiny bureaucrats with no empathy for the poverty their soulless business practices have created.

One travels to the Sundance Film Festival in the dead of winter for numerous reasons, chief of them being the promise of a front-row seat to confident debuts like Cory Finley’s delectably dark “Thoroughbreds.” Indeed, the playwright-turned-filmmaker demonstrated himself an original voice with his first cinematic outing in 2017, proving his promise with the equally sophisticated “Bad Education,” about a real-life public school embezzling scandal.
Marking Finley’s homecoming to Sundance, “Landscape with Invisible Hand” feels less like a return for the writer-director, and more like a swing-for-the-fences departure with mixed results. On the one hand, this impressively scoped science-fiction/satire blend with some old-school visual craft signals Finley’s natural aptitude for shepherding big Hollywood productions, being the largest scaled project of his still-ascendant career. Refreshingly, “Landscape with Invisible Hand” looks and feels like a big-screen experience complete with spaceships and creatively designed dystopian locales, an increasingly rare accomplishment...

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. MGM releases the film in select theaters on Friday, August 18.
Cory Finley’s extremely welcome mission to make every conceivable kind of high school movie — at a time when few other serious filmmakers are bothering to make any kind of high school movie — continues with the young director’s third feature and first misstep. Like “Thoroughbreds” and “Bad Education” before it, “Landscape with Invisible Hand” leverages the ecology of American teenagedom into a satirical and/or breathtakingly sad class comedy that explores the value of empathy in capitalism. Unlike either of those two films, it’s full of slimy little aliens who look like a frozen supermarket turkey made out of tongue.
They’re called the Vuvv, and by the time this story begins in 2036, these squat pink colonizers have been holding Earth’s economy hostage for more than five years.

When IndieWire conducted its annual survey of all the cameras used by cinematographers at the Sundance Film Festival, a striking trend quickly emerged: Over 75 percent of the DPs with narrative films at the festival utilized either the Arri Alexa Mini or its large format sibling, the Alexa Mini Lf, as their camera of choice. The Mini was introduced in 2015 as a compact version of the Alexa designed primarily for use on drones and gimbals, but its combination of a traditional Alexa sensor with increased mobility eventually led to its use as the A camera on Hollywood studio movies like “A Star is Born” and “Get Out” — and now, it seems, for a majority of cinematographers in the independent realm.
The Mini’s presence in independent film began to be felt at Sundance’s 2017 iteration, where festival favorites “Patti Cake” and “Thoroughbreds,” among others, were captured with the camera. “It was a very ambitious shoot,...

For the last seven decades, aliens have been observing humanity, waiting for the right moment to touch down. When they finally do, after the world’s best military efforts to scare them fail, they broker deals with those wealthy enough to live high above the planet in their floating cityscapes. The less fortunate are left to fend for the scraps that remain of Earth, which now relies on the synthetic, cheap mass production of cubed food the aliens invented, along with other “innovations” to improve productivity and labor costs. This is the world of Cory Finley’s third feature Landscape with Invisible Hand, an adaptation of M.T. Anderson’s novel that initially intrigues with its lo-fi sci-fi ambition but has too much on its mind without saying anything interesting at all.

War of the Worlds. Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Independence Day. Signs. All of these films depict alien invasions as they are happening, but what happens after the fact? And what if, by some small miracle, we come to an agreement with the invaders and find a way to live alongside them? That’s exactly what Cory Finley‘s Landscape With Invisible Hand aims to find out, albeit to mixed results.
Taking place a few years after a hyper-intelligent alien race known as the Vuvv took over planet Earth, Landscape With Invisible Hand subverts expectations by informing us that they did so through soft economic power rather than brute force, bringing wondrous technology to Earth that only the wealthiest could afford. This technology rendered most jobs obsolete, leaving the rest of humanity to scrape together money in the tourism industry.

Sundance film festival: thoroughbreds and Bad Education director Cory Finley makes an ambitious misstep with a jumbled comedy about controlling aliens
It’s become a depressingly familiar rite of passage for a director of vim and promise to stumble when they ambitiously decide to adapt a book that should have probably stayed on the shelf. Back in 2018, Blue Ruin and Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier came a cropper when he tried to wrangle William Giraldi’s unwieldy Hold the Dark to the screen. At Sundance in 2020, Dee Rees followed Pariah and Mudbound with a clunky, critically loathed attempt to turn Joan Didion’s The Last Thing He Wanted into a coherent film. And just last year Andrew Dominik and Noah Baumbach made their worst films to date with Blonde and White Noise respectively.

After only two years of being online only, the Sundance Film Festival is again happening in Park City, Utah. As usual, JoBlo is going to be there to check out all of the coolest movies to emerge from the indie scene. I’m excited to get my boots on the ground and watch some movies. While the online edition was fun, nothing beats discovering these movies with an audience. I almost got to attend the festival in person last year, only for a late Covid surge to result in the fest being canceled at the last minute. Nevertheless, the fest is back in full swing this year, with an impressive lineup with a few genre heavy-hitters mixed in among more high-brow fare.
Here are some of the titles we’re most excited to see:

When we were first introduced to the character of Imperator Furiosa in 2015's "Mad Max: Fury Road," her backstory was hinted at being a harrowing one. This isn't exactly surprising –- after all, everyone in the hellish post-apocalyptic world of "Mad Max" has had a rough go of it. George Miller's upcoming prequel, "Furiosa," will pull back the curtain on the beloved character, whose younger self will be portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy.
And boy, was she pumped for the role. In an interview with IndieWire, Taylor-Joy recounted her experience preparing for and working on "Furiosa" after production began in Australia back in June 2022. Yes, that included driving in the desert without a driver's license. She joked (?):
"I've been on a different planet for the last seven months. I think I need to sit down and attempt to try and digest what's happened over the last seven months."

If you remember “Project Popcorn” – the strategy that saw all 2021 Warner Bros. movies stream on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters – then “Mortal Kombat” and “Those Who Wish Me Dead” will sound familiar. The martial arts reboot and Taylor Sheridan thriller, respectively, will be leaving the streaming service this month.
It’s also final call for Martin Scorsese’s “Bringing Out the Dead,” the extended version of Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” and Edgar Wright’s terrific sci-fi action-comedy “The World’s End” if auteurs are your thing. “Planet Earth” and “Planet Earth II” are also leaving the streaming service soon.
Here’s the full list of what’s leaving HBO Max in December 2022.

Over the 5-day Thanksgiving stretch, Netflix’s one-week sneak preview of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery buried all new and old major studio adult counterprogramming with an estimated 13.3M over 5-days for what is projected to be a 15M first week by Tuesday.
Far and away, this is the best theatrical launch ever for a Netflix pre-streaming movie. Last year‘s Dwayne Johnson-Ryan Reynolds-Gal Gadot action title Red Notice is arguably their best, with a 1.25M-1.5M 3 day opening. That pic is also their most-watched worldwide at 364M-plus hours. Glass Onion‘s 3-day of 9.3M is the 10th-best for a title opening in less than 900 theaters, notching just above such movies as TriStar’s The Doors in 1991 (9.1M at 840 theaters) and Universal’s 2004 Nov. 12-14 launch of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, which posted 8.68M at 530 theaters.

I love a good teaser poster, and these three pieces of key art for Vasilis Katsoupis' debut feature deliver a satisfying tease. The film, Inside, is a one man, one room heist film starring Willem Dafoe, who slowly goes crazy after he is locked in an upscale penthouse full of expensive art. The posters were designed by Arsonal, who typically traffick in prestige TV work but occasionally do excellent feature film work; see their one sheets for Tully, or Thoroughbreds. The teasers here, each feature an object with the films title embedded. Note the excess type elements which fade into the posters creamy background offer a trapped/escape motif. I think it is safe to guess that these objects (like the animal posters...

Currently on view at the Swiss Institute, multidisciplinary artist Karen Lamassonne’s exhibition “Ruido / Noise” is one of the season’s essential gallery shows. In addition to a life-spanning survey of paintings, photography and sculpture by the Colombian-American artist, the show details Lamassonne’s work as an art director, perhaps most famously on Luis Ospina’s pitch-black 1982 vampire parable Pura Sangre (Pure Blood). Lamassonne was a key figure in the storied Grupo de Cali, a posse of artists, writers and filmmakers based in the city of same name, notorious both for their hard-partying lifestyle and their bottomless appetite for the macabre. Ospina […]

"Game of Thrones" may have one of the most widely derided series finales in the history of television, but that hasn't stopped HBO from searching for ways to continue expanding the universe of this still massively popular show. I was not a fan of the way the original series — which I loved — wrapped up and I have to admit that tempered my expectations for "House of the Dragon." I'm happy to report that the prequel is not only pretty great, but rather than being a retread, is building on the world original author George R.R. Martin created in unique and exciting ways.
The show has featured several major time jumps and while Olivia Cooke was cast first as Alicent Hightower, the younger version of her character was played by Emily Carey for the first half of the season. As far as I'm concerned, the Olivia Cooke Emmy campaign began the day she took over the role of Alicent Hightower in "House of the Dragon." Much like "The Crown," the Thrones prequel series is taking a generational approach to its storytelling, swapping out its performers when a massive time skips calls for aging the characters up. While it was a shame to see Emily Carey go, Cooke has more than stepped up to the plate, just in time to play a character that's spiraling into darkness. The latest episode of the series gave Cooke some real time to shine: watching...

Olivia Cooke says that during her early 20s while working on projects like Bates Motel, Ready Player One and Thoroughbreds, her filming schedules and more led to an “awful” mental health experience.
The House of the Dragon actress opens up about the conditions that led to her increased isolation and eventually depression while working on A&e’s contemporary prequel series to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho in a recent interview with The Guardian.
“I’m so grateful for that job, but I had a really tough time on it,” she tells the outlet. “The way the schedule worked, we all had different storylines, so a lot of my time was spent in this apartment in Vancouver, working once every two weeks.”
Cooke explains she had earlier memories of not always feeling “100 percent” and was grappling with the stakes of her career at the time.

This article contains spoilers for episode 5 of House of the Dragon
Episode 6 of House of the Dragon is about to take the series’ biggest time jump yet. “The Princess and the Queen” will be set 10 years after the deadly brawl at Rhaenyra’s wedding feast, Alicent’s dramatic entrance, and King Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) latest health scare. While the series has jumped forward before, it’s only been by a few years or so at a time, so actors Milly Alcock and Emily Carey have been able to portray the young Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, respectively, without issue. But now that we’re halfway through the first season, and House of the Dragon is jumping forward an entire decade, it’s time to say goodbye to these young actors we’ve come to know so well.

Olivia Cooke couldn’t stomach even pretending to be a Trump supporter.
The “House of the Dragon” actress, who took over the role of Alicent Hightower from Emily Carey due to a series time jump, revealed that co-showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal advised her to find inspiration from the disgraced former president. The series creators told Cooke to view the character Queen Alicent like a “woman for Trump.”
“I just didn’t want to give them any more mental real estate than they already had,” Cooke told Entertainment Weekly about calling back to the Trump family. “So I tried to find a different route into her, but I could see what they were saying with this complete indoctrination and denial of her own autonomy and rights. I just couldn’t be asked to go down that road.”
Cooke noted that Alicent has been “bittered and twisted over time” due to her prescribed gender role.
