Adam Sandler has set a new comedy special at Netflix — this time directed by Josh Safdie.
The project continues Sandler’s string of collaborations with Safie, who co-directed him in 2019’s “Uncut Gems” alongside his brother Benny Safdie. Sandler also starred in the brothers’ 2020 short film “Goldman v. Silverman” and is set to lead an upcoming feature set in the world of sports memorabilia to be directed by Josh and produced by Benny, though the latter told Variety in January that the film was “on pause.”
Currently untitled, the special will be Sandler’s second at Netflix, following up on his 2018 set “100% Fresh” — which went on to receive a 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sandler has worked on numerous projects for Netflix: In 2023, he led the voice cast of the streamer’s animated musical comedy film “Leo” and starred opposite Idina Menzel in “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,...

You wouldn’t expect an animated film about a talking iguana to draw equal inspiration from Andy Kaufman and “It’s a Wonderful Life,” but that just might help explain the wide appeal of Netflix’s smash hit “Leo.” It also makes perfect sense when you consider the creative minds behind Adam Sandler-led project, which includes his longtime collaborator and comedy’s not-so-secret weapon, Robert Smigel.
Though perhaps best known to audiences for his work as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the foul-mouthed canine puppet who began life on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” where Smigel was the first head writer. But Smigel was also behind some of the most memorable comic moments of the last 30 years. On “Saturday Night Live” he created countless indelible sketches and the animated segment “TV Funhouse,” which received its own spin-off series on Comedy Central. Adam Sandler fans are in for a very “Hubie Halloween” when the upcoming family comedy film hits Netflix on October 7. Sandler stars in “Hubie Halloween” as Hubie DuBois, a well-intentioned but dopey and frequently-mocked community volunteer who spends each Halloween exhaustively ensuring his neighbors celebrate the holiday safely. The film will follow Hubie as he finds himself at the center of a real murder investigation during one Halloween night.
Sandler stars in “Hubie Halloween” alongside Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Maya Rudolph, Rob Schneider, Kenan Thompson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Chiklis, Tim Meadows, Noah Schnapp, Paris Berelc, China Anne McClain and Shaquille O’Neal. The film marks Sandler’s first film with Bowen in over two decades; the duo last starred as love interests in 1996’s “Happy Gilmore.”

There’s still no release date for the fourth season of the widely acclaimed “Fargo,” but FX Networks’ latest teaser for the upcoming season promises an installment as hilarious as it is action-packed.
The new teaser, titled “Big Fish,” primarily consists of criminals threatening violence, interspersed with slapstick comedy — be it four adults awkwardly hanging out on see-saws or someone haplessly tripping on a pile of snow. The 30 seconds of material offer little in the way of revealing plot details, but there’s more than enough gun-toting and goofiness to warrant plenty of excitement for the upcoming season, whenever it ends up premiering.
Per FX, the fourth installment of Fargo is set in 1950 Kansas City, where two criminal syndicates fighting for a piece of the American dream have struck an uneasy peace. Chris Rock stars as Loy Cannon, the head of the African American crime family who trades sons with...

Proving that taste is somewhat relative, Netflix subscribers have reportedly consumed over 2 billion hours of Adam Sandler material since the 2015 release of his movie The Ridiculous 6 on the streaming platform. Sandler, who has a deal with Netflix for original content, has produced the likes of The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler, The Week Of, Murder Mystery, and 100% Fresh since 2014, and has four new movies in development. What, then, can account for the un-satiable interest in Sandler’s output among Netflix subscribers?
Although the Happy Madison pics for Netflix have been routinely slammed by critics, they’ve been delivering significant audiences to the streaming site, and also featured in the most popular overall content on the platform last year with Murder Mystery. In terms of Sandler’s popularity, we were surprised (and even a little dismayed) by Netflix extending his deal in 2017, but the millions of people turning up for his comedies may actually be onto something.

Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, together again? When it comes to combined star power, Netflix’s “The Week Of” can hardly compete with “The Avengers”, and yet this latest reteaming of the two former “Saturday Night Live” comedians should earn its share of eyeballs this weekend, at least among those who weren’t clever enough to get their “Avengers: Infinity War” tickets in advance. Meanwhile, it allows Sandler to cross off yet another commitment in his eight-picture deal with Netflix — a steady source of mediocrity briefly interrupted by the release of Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” last year, in which the actor reminded everyone of his actual potential.
Back in autopilot mode, Sandler phones in what may qualify as the lowest-concept comedy of his career — which, thankfully, is not the same as the lowest point in his career. He and his “Longest Yard” co-star play fathers...

After 85 minutes of mediocrity, “The Week Of” finally lands on one inspired bit, and then there’s another half hour to go. Long Island family man Kenny Lustig (Adam Sandler), joined by his wife (Rachel Dratch) and kooky brother (Steve Buscemi) attempt to sabotage town hall by capturing a bunch of bats and unleashing them into the building’s chimney in the middle of the night. It doesn’t really matter how, or why, this scheme comes together — the out-of-nowhere cartoonishness speaks for itself, and stands out in a sea of mediocrity in yet another half-hearted Sandler project for Netflix that underserves the wealth of talent involved.
If that cast doesn’t hook you, Netflix has more bait: “The Week Of” also features Chris Rock, another recent addition to the Netflix Cinematic Universe (Ncu) with his far more endearing standup special “Tambourine.” In that one-hour set, Rock lands more effective...

In some ways, you’ve probably seen The Week Of before. Adam Sandler and Chris Rock essentially play themselves in this paint-by-numbers comedy centring on the crucible of a wedding. Sandler plays Kenny, an Everyman with a good heart (if an anarchic life), whilst Rock plays the more suave, successful but emotionally disengaged Kirby. The film’s first punchline is “that’s what she said”, and if that isn’t a cast iron reflection of what to expect over the following two hours, then I don’t know what is.
It’s impulsive comedy in the sense that it latches onto things which have always been ‘funny’, at least to fans of Sandler’s work. His uncle Seymour is missing both of his legs and Sandler can’t ever open the wheelchair, for example. The Manager of the hotel where the wedding is supposed to be held is foreign, barely understandable,...

Last summer, in IndieWire’s review of “The Meyerowitz Stories,” this critic wrote that “It remains hugely frustrating how great Adam Sandler can be when he’s not making Adam Sandler movies.” If it didn’t seem necessary to hash out the distinction between a movie with Adam Sandler, and an Adam Sandler Movie, that’s only because the difference between the two is ridiculously obvious.

Plot specifics for “Uncut Gems” are being kept under wraps, although the film is set in New York City’s diamond district. The screenplay was written by the Safdie brothers and their regular collaborator Ronald Bronstein. A24 is backing the drama after the company’s success with the Safdies on “Good Time” last summer. Producers include Scott Rudin and Eli Bush through Scott Rudin Produtions and Sebastian Bear-McClard and Oscar Boyson through Elara Pictures.
