“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.

In the early days of January, Universal Pictures closed the first major Hollywood deal of 2024 by pre-emptively purchasing the short story package Long Lost, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners producing alongside Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Pictures, as well as Scott Glassgold of Ground Control Entertainment. Colin Bannon, who previously wrote and directed the 2009 comedy Love Conquers Paul, is on board to write the screenplay adaptation of his own 50 page short story, which is said to be “in the vein of What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby“. Now Deadline reports that Universal has scored another Colin Bannon deal, pre-emptively purchasing his short story thriller package Don’t Look, with Janelle Monáe in talks to star and M3GAN, Malignant, and The Nun 2 writer Akela Cooper writing the screenplay, based on an unpublished Bannon short story.

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, real-life husband and wife, are reuniting onscreen for the second time. The Oscar-winner (Vikander for “The Danish Girl”) and the Oscar-nominee (Fassbender for “12 Years A Slave”) will star in “Hope,” a mostly Korean-language feature from Na Hong-Jin.
The picture, about a mysterious delivery made on the outskirts of a remote harbor town, is the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since “The Wailing” earned rave reviews and $49 million worldwide in 2016 from a $6 million budget, with $48 million of that coming from South Korea.
“Oftentimes,” noted Hong-Jin, “a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen.”

Alicia Vikander (Blue Bayou) is replacing Michelle Williams as Queen Catherine Parr in the royal thriller Firebrand from Brazilian helmer Karim Ainouz (The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão), Deadline has confirmed. She’ll star alongside Jude Law, who is set to portray King Henry VIII.
Ainousz’s first English-language feature, based on Elizabeth Fremantle’s bestselling historical novel Queen’s Gambit, centers on Parr—Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife, who was the only one to avoid banishment or death.
By the time young Catherine Parr (Vikander) married the deteriorating, increasingly despotic King Henry VIII (Law), she had no assurances of a happy marriage; in fact, she had no assurances of surviving this marriage at all. Of her predecessors, two were thrown out, one died in childbirth and two were beheaded. While Catherine tried to keep her head about her to navigate the politics of her position, she brought a secret agenda.

Janelle Monáe is the latest addition to the ensemble cast of Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” sequel for Netflix.
Monáe joins Daniel Craig in the film, who reprises his role from the original whodunit movie as detective Benoit Blanc. Edward Norton and Dave Bautista are also set to appear in the new installment, written and directed Johnson. Johnson and Ram Bergman will also produce the film under their T-Street banner.
Netflix had no comment on Monáe’s casting.
In March, the streamer bought the rights to “Knives Out 2” and “Knives Out 3” for $468 million, after the original “Knives Out” — starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Ana de Armas and the late Christopher Plummer — earned more than $300 million at the box office. The 2019 murder mystery also garnered an Oscar nomination for Johnson’s original screenplay.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pieces, including last year’s winner “Little Women.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Costume Design.)

What will the costume design branch of the Academy favor this year? Will it be the lushness of period, or will voters favor something else, something contemporary? Or will they pick a winner who lands in the history books?
Whoever they choose, there are a plethora of eras to select from. David Fincher’s “Mank,” n will most likely nab a wealth of craft nominations and maybe even go home with Oscar in several categories.
Costume designer Trish Summerville is no stranger to Fincher’s world, having worked on “Gone Girl” and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” Summerville brought the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood with gowns and suits to “Mank.” Her costumes on the grand black-and-white “Mank” have been garnering awards buzz since the first photos were released. And many consider her the front-runner in this category.

Matteo Garrone’s retelling of “Pinocchio” got a surprise boost when his spin on the children’s classic made the Academy shortlist for hair and makeup.
Rather than rely on visual effects, he called on Mark Coulier to realize his vision and transform the actor into the puppet who becomes a boy.
Coulier, who has worked on “The Mummy Returns” and “The Iron Lady,” says, “We wanted to keep it grounded in performance rather than in complex technical effects.
His process began taking a computer scan of actor Federico Ielapi’s face and shoulders. Coulier spent months on a sculpture from the scan, making tweaks and changes. “We looked at everything, from the length of the nose, the angle of the eyebrows, the nose, the gap between the nose and his upper lip.”
Four weeks before filming Garrone signed off on the sculpture and Coulier began building silicone pieces for the actor.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till this year). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. Apologies that we missed this announcement but the Makeup and Hairstylist Guild announced their nominees this past week. It's an interesting peek at what the makeup professionals in the industry think since it's not super reflective of what the Academy's smaller makeup branch thinks given that Four of Oscar's ten finalists are nowhere to be found. Other films that makeup and hair artists clearly did like such as Mulan, Bill & Ted Face the Music, The Prom, Promising Young Woman, and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm somehow all missed Oscar's finals.
The categories with six nominees in the list after the jump are due to ties in voting...

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

A Guide to Avoiding #OscarsSoWhite: Instructions for Academy Voters Before Filling Out Their Ballots
⊗ Film is supposed to be inclusive. But if you can’t see yourself on-screen, do you feel as if you even exist? One-third of our lives is spent at work, and the artists who express their creativity through cinema deserve to have their work seen, and not just because of the color of their skin or their gender but because when you are exposed to an experience different from your own, your creativity grows. Take a moment to review this list of eligible films, putting a check mark on the ones you have seen from this year. Ideally, that will leave you with a clearer picture of how you are contributing to cinema’s evolution with your votes.
Your goal should be to watch all of these films, but let’s be realistic. Try seeing at least 60% of them. All meet the Academy’s diversity requirements — in front of or...

Exclusive: HBO is bolstering the supporting cast for Mare of Easttown, its upcoming limited series starring Kate Winslet. Mackenzie Lansing (The Deuce), Kate Arrington (Billions), Ruby Cruz (Castle Rock), Eisa Davis (Betty), Enid Graham (The Glorias), Justin Hurtt-Dunkley (High Flying Bird), Izzy King, Jack Mulhern (The Society), Anthony Norman (Broadway’s The Prom), Drew Scheid (Halloween) and Madeleine Weinstein (Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) join the series, which is a co-production of HBO and Paul Lee’s wiip. It will premiere April 18 on HBO.
Written by Brad Inglesby, and directed by Craig Zobel, Mare of Easttown stars Winslet as Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective whose life crumbles around her as she investigates a local murder. The limited series is an exploration into the dark side of a close community and an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, make sure you’re doing work on Jared Leto. That might be one lesson from the Oscars shortlists, where Leto’s film “The Little Things” was included among the 10 semi-finalists in that category. If it ultimately receives a nomination and wins, it would be the third Leto film in less than 10 years to win this exact award.

The first was “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013), which famously won Best Makeup and Hairstyling despite a makeup budget of only $250. Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews prevailed for that film in no small part for transforming Leto into transgender character Rayon, for which Leto also won Best Supporting Actor. Though in the years since, as trans actors, artists and activists have gained more visibility in the industry,...
