Although more than one actor 'plays' the Curious - the masked child who bookends each episode - the character is in fact a real life legend, about a hooded masked figure that has shown up in photographs and accounts of the unexplained all over the world for more than a century. It was the program-makers conclusion that the presence of this unearthly child was a signifier that a paranormal event was about to take place, but that his presence was not malevolent.
The Creeped Out universe is interconnected. For instance, Patty Peterson is mentioned in both Slapstick (2017) and Kindlesticks (2018). The setting of Karter Bay appears in both Slapstick and The Call (2017). And Zucco's - a restaurant - is mentioned in several episodes.
According to creators Bede Blake and Robert Butler, a big inspiration was Steven Spielberg and Amazing Stories (1985) in particular, as they wanted to explore the wonder of the supernatural as much as the psychological horror.
Episodes are full of 80s movie and 70s horror references. Including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Big (1988), The Fly (1986), The 'Burbs (1989), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Back to the Future (1985), Carrie (1976), The Shining (1980).
