Exclusive: After landing the villain role in Ryan Coogler’s next project, Jack O’Connell continues to fill out his dance card. Sources tell Deadline that he is set to join the cast of 28 Years Later, a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes also star in the pic, which is part of a planned trilogy.
Danny Boyle is directing the first movie from a script by Alex Garland. Sony will release the film in theaters globally.
While plot details are vague, the original 28 Days Later, directed by Boyle, written by Garland and released in 2002, centered on a bicycle courier (played by Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover the world had been overrun with zombies following the outbreak of a virus. The pic grossed more than $82 million worldwide and led to the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, on which Boyle and Garland served solely as EPs.

Universal Pictures has tapped renowned British filmmaker Andrew Haigh (All of Us Strangers) to write and direct a Leonardo da Vinci film based on Walter Isaacson’s bestselling 2017 biography of the artist, Deadline can confirm.
Based on thousands of pages from Da Vinci’s notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, the biography looks to connect his art to his science, showing how Leonardo’s genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy.
An icon of the Italian Renaissance, Da Vinci was not only a prolific painter but also a polymath excelling in various fields including science, engineering, and anatomy. His masterpieces, the “Mona Lisa,” and “The Last Supper” are among the most recognizable and influential works of art in history.
Christopher Hampton wrote a previous draft of the Da Vinci script.

Universal Pictures has found its director for the high-priority Leonardo da Vinci film. “All of Us Strangers” helmer Andrew Haigh has signed on to direct and adapt Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography of the Renaissance man.
Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Isaacson’s book became one of the hottest literary properties when it hit the market in 2017. At the time, Universal was outbid by Paramount, which developed the project with Leonardo DiCaprio for years before putting it in turnaround. Universal quietly picked it up last year. The runaway bestseller connects da Vinci’s transcendent art, which includes the Mona Lisa painting hanging in the Louvre, to his trailblazing science — and shows how his genius was driven by an insatiable curiosity, careful observation and a whimsical imagination. In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

Exclusive: Jack O’Connell (Ferrari) is in talks to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler’s untitled event film for Warner Bros, sources tell Deadline.
While both the plot of the film and O’Connell’s role remain under wraps, we’re told it’s a period genre pic in which he’ll be playing the villain. Deadline was first to tell you about Warners’ acquisition of the project, following a heated bidding war.
The film brings Jordan and Coogler together following their collaboration on the Creed and Black Panther franchises, having first worked together on the acclaimed Sundance pic Fruitvale Station. It’s also the second project from the collaborators that Warner Bros Film Group co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have championed, after greenlighting the box office hit Creed III during their time at MGM.
Coogler is writing and will also produce alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.

Two of Ireland's national treasures, Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott, are gearing up for their upcoming film "All of Us Strangers." The indie film, directed by queer British filmmaker Andrew Haigh, will see the pair of esteemed actors getting close after a chance encounter changes everything. If Haigh's previous projects, including "Weekend" and "Lean on Pete," are anything to go by, it's likely to be another LGBTQ+ film that needs to be on your watch list.
Oscar nominee Mescal and Emmy nominee Scott are the dynamic duo in the lead roles, and they're joined by Claire Foy ("The Crown") and Jamie Bell ("Rocketman"). Foy and Bell play Scott's parents, who died when he was just 12. As he tries to write about them - and falls in love with Mescal's character - his parents visit him as ghostly presences. Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal have undeniable chemistry in “All of Us Strangers,” according to writer-director Andrew Haigh.
The film, which follows a screenwriter (Scott) who falls for his mysterious neighbor (Mescal) and revisits his childhood in a surreal way, features “fearless” sex scenes, as Haigh told Vanity Fair.
“There was chemistry between the two of them literally the second I saw them together,” Haigh said of Mescal and Scott. “Both of them were pretty fearless. There was no sense of them being afraid of approaching those scenes. They knew how important they were.”
Haigh added that he approached love scenes differently than past films like “Weekend” for “All of Us Strangers,” saying, “I’ve been more objective in how I’ve shot sex scenes in the past. Here, I really wanted to feel the subjective nature of having sex and what it feels like — the nervousness and the excitement...

It’s not long before T.I.M. is taking it upon himself to do more than re-up groceries and sweep the floors, becoming obsessed with Abi and having a marked distaste for her formerly wayward husband. Things soon spiral out of control in the spotless smart home while Abi is distracted by the wild demands of her boss. Can T.I.M. be stopped from doing something deadly before it’s too late?...

Fame is far from the only occupational hazard in Hollywood.
Lately, it seems there’s a new headline every week detailing the varying degrees actors have suffered for the craft — everything from the psychological torture of getting in character to broken limbs or back injuries while filming and even the mental gymnastics required to decompress from a difficult role. Or, simply fainting while watching another actor suffer.
After the first public showing in New York of A24’s Beau Is Afraid, auteur Ari Aster admitted during a Q&a that Joaquin Phoenix passed out during a scene in which his title character was not in front of cameras but rather just present to help co-star Patti LuPone through her own intense scene. “All of a sudden, he fell out of frame,” Aster recalled. “I knew it was bad because he was letting people touch him and people were tending to him.

Colin Farrell was virtually unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, in 2022’s gritty “The Batman” film from Matt Reeves. Now they’re bringing the character to the new Max streaming service for an eight-episode series in 2024. An in-production preview of the series was unveiled on April 12 exclusively during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles. Watch it above.
In “The Batman,” Farrell played the Penguin as a lieutenant for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) who ran Falcone’s Iceberg Lounge. Spoiler alert: Falcone doesn’t make it to the end of the film, perhaps opening the door for other criminals to take control of Gotham City’s underworld. The film earned a trio of Oscar nominations: Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the last of which was largely in recognition of the extensive prosthetics worn by Farrell.

Before he received his first Academy Award nomination for "The Banshees of Inisherin" — and lost to Brendan Fraser for "The Whale" — Colin Farrell put on real weight for his role as a whaler in the underseen AMC+ miniseries "The North Water" in 2021. When it came time for Farrell to play the Penguin in five or six scenes of "The Batman," however, he'd had enough, so he "decided on a fat suit" instead. At the time, he explained, "I didn't want to naturally go big again cause I had a few little health things as a result of 'The North Water.'"
Another reason why Farrell was maybe hesitant to bulk up again is that he already had experience gaining weight for his role as corrupt cop Ray Velcoro in HBO's "True Detective" season 2. In 2015, while serving as the chic spokesman for Dolce & Gabbana's Intenso fragrance, Farrell told...

If you love the 1980s – specifically, the neon-lit, Talking Heads-blaring, Delboy swagger of the 1980s Cockney – then Sky’s new crime thriller A Town Called Malice is right up your street.
Meet the Lords
Created by The Sweeney’s Nick Love, this eight-part drama centres on the Lord family, a South London gang whose criminal heyday might be behind them, but who are still up for causing trouble. After a spot of bother with a rival gang (and leaving a policeman for dead), they flee to Spain’s Costa del Sol to lay low, and in amongst the pina coladas and palm trees realise they have a chance to recapture their former glory and become criminal top dogs once more.
The series premiered on Sky Max at 9pm on Thursday 16th March, and the full box-set is already available to watch on Now.

To prepare for Yorgos Lanthimos' 2015 dark comedy "The Lobster," Colin Farrell gained over 40 pounds in just eight weeks. He guzzled cola, fries, cheeseburgers, chocolate cake, and microwaved cartons of ice cream to hit the target. It was "not that fun," Farrell remarked at Cannes that year. But "The Banshees of Inisherin" star is far from the only actor to undergo such a brutal body transformation. The likes of Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, Anne Hathaway, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Natalie Portman have done as much -- and have later voiced how the process took a toll on them.
Wouldn't it be easier for everyone involved to just hire an actor who already has the body shape the character's supposed to have? (Or at least someone within the general range.) Even if that's not an option for whatever reason, surely regular movie magic — make-up, prosthetics, forced perspectives, and so on — is better than...

Colin Farrell will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor at the Palm Springs International Film Awards on Jan. 5, the Palm Springs International Film Festival announced Wednesday.
Farrell will receive the award for his performance in Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” in which he plays a plodding man of simple tastes whose daily trips to the pub take a dark but humorous turn when his best friend (played by Farrell’s “In Bruges” costar Brendan Gleeson) suddenly says he doesn’t want to be friends anymore.
The award is the first to be announced by this year’s Palm Springs awards, which will kick off the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival in the desert resort community east of Los Angeles. The awards were not held in 2021 or 2022 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but will return to the Palm Springs Convention Center in January.

Colin Farrell has been doing some of the most interesting work of his career in the last few years, with his roles in "The Batman" and "The North Water" showing off his transformational ability and "The Banshees of Inisherin" reuniting him with "In Bruges" writer-director Martin McDonagh for a film that is already gaining Oscar buzz. He's also got his own Penguin-centric HBO Max spin-off series on the way, so if you're ready for more Spanish lessons and/or old-time gangster-like "sweethearts," it sounds like the series will be serving as a direct continuation of that mode of Oswald Cobblepot, picking up right where "The Batman" left off.
In an interview with Extra (via Variety), Farrell elaborated on the timeline for "The Penguin," saying, "It starts about a week after 'The Batman' ends, so Gotham is still, somewhat, underwater. I read the first script of the first...

Disney+ is rounding out the cast of its Percy Jackson and the Olympians series with three new additions.
Adam Copeland (WWE Hall of Famer), Jessica Parker Kennedy (The Flash), and Susan Cryer (Silicon Valley) have all joined the cast, according to Variety.
Copeland plays Ares, described as “handsome in a wicked way, and arrogant, despite not always being the sharpest tool in the shed.”
Parker Kennedy plays Medusa in a guest-starring capacity.
Medusa has been "wronged by the dogs" and loves a bitter life away from society, until travelers find her place.
Cryer is set to play Echidna, who is the Mother of Monsters.

"Peaky Blinders" creator Steven Knight has lined up his next TV series with "Rogue Heroes," a World War II drama with attitude about the founding of the Special Air Service (Sas). The series is coming your way this fall on Epix and BBC One, and now the first trailer for it is here.
Knight is also known for his other collaborations with Tom Hardy — the one-man movie, "Locke," and the one-season show, "Taboo." He's been moving toward the war, anyway, in the upcoming "Peaky Blinders" movie, but while you wait for that, you can get to know a new cast of characters in what looks like a British outpost in the Egyptian desert, as judged by the pyramids in the background. There is always a danger when television executives – who live, predominantly, in four-bedroom London townhouses, picking up oat milk flat whites before electric bicycling their way into Soho – decide to depict the lives of working-class northerners. That jeopardy is on full display in ITV’s five-part true crime thriller, The Walk-In, a look at the rise of the National Action terror group in the wake of the murder of MP Jo Cox. Thankfully, this gritty, disturbing drama manages to squeeze pathos out of one of the most troubling stories in recent British history.
Is there a better actor working in British television, right now, than Stephen Graham? After last year’s one-two punch of Time and Help (not to mention The North Water and Peaky Blinders), Graham returns to screens as Matthew Collins, a far-right activist turned antifascist campaigner and journalist. It is a role that suits Graham down to...

BBC Studios, the commercial arm of Britain’s public broadcaster, has marked record growth for 2021/22 with profits up 50 year-on-year to £226 million (267 million) and sales up 30 to £1.63 billion.
The past financial year marks the first time the business has topped £200 million in profits. Meanwhile, the boost in sales, which is up from £1.26 billion in the 2020/21 financial year, is due to a healthy year for production and advertising revenues via BBC Studios-backer broadcaster UKTV.
While there was no cash dividend returned to the BBC last year due to the pandemic, BBC Studios has this year contributed a dividend of £135 million to the broadcaster.
Crucially, the record growth has helped the business reach its target of £1.2 billion in returns to the BBC over the first five years of the current BBC Charter — a goal that was first set in October 2015, covering the period of 2017/18 through to 2021/22.

See-Saw, the production outfit behind shows including Netflix’s “Heartstopper” and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” has posted an income of £79.7 million (97 million) for the year ending June 30, 2021.
The accounts, which were filed at U.K. company registrar Companies House on Wednesday, show that turnover has almost doubled at the U.K. and Australia-based producer. The previous year’s turnover, for the year ending June 30, 2020, was £43.4 million.
The increase in production, however, has also seen the company’s costs increase “significantly” to £92.9 million. The previous year’s costs came to less than half that number, at £43.8 million.
The figures were no doubt also affected by localized inflation in the industry, attributable to the U.K. production boom.
However, thanks to a £16 million tax credit, overall profits for 20/21 came to £2.13 million, a considerable improvement on the previous year’s accounts, which showed a loss of £24,000.

Andrew Haigh surprised everyone with his last project, BBC‘s “The North Water,” a grisly adaptation of a novel about the doomed crew on a whaling vessel in the Arctic. Critics loved the show, but it’s quite a departure from Haigh’s understated earlier work, like 2011’s queer festival darling “Weekend” or 2015’s “45 Years.”

Andrew Haigh, acclaimed filmmaker behind queer festival darling “Weekend” and A24’s “Lean on Pete,” has assembled four U.K. heavyweights for his next feature film.
“Fleabag” breakout star Andrew Scott, “Normal People” heartthrob Paul Mescal, “The Crown” O.G. Elizabeth II Claire Foy, and “Rocketman” actor Jamie Bell are all on deck for “Strangers” — which Haigh has adapted and will direct. Searchlight Pictures, Film4 and Blueprint Pictures are partnering on the project, loosely based on an award-winning novel by Taichi Yamada.
“Strangers” follows screenwriter Adam (Scott) who, one night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Mescal) that punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As Adam and Harry get closer, Adam is pulled back to his childhood home where he discovers that his long-dead parents (Foy and Bell) are both living and look the same age as the...

What’s the verdict on Colin Farrell‘s recent foray into television? On the one hand, there’s season two of “True Detective,” a let-down after the riveting first season; but that’s not Farrell’s fault. Then there’s the BBC “The North Water” from last year, an acclaimed but underseen miniseries with Farrell as the show’s vicious villain Henry Drax. And as fans of “The Batman” await Farrell’s return as The Penguin in the HBO Max spin-off to the film, the actor adds another TV series to his list of upcoming projects.

Apple has formally ordered the drama series “Sugar” starring Colin Farrell to series, Variety has learned.
It was first reported in December 2021 that Apple had won the rights to the series in a competitive situation, though it had not officially been ordered to series at that time.
Exact plot details for the show remain under wraps, aside from the fact that it is described as a genre-bending contemporary take on the private detective story set in Los Angeles.
Mark Protosevich serves as writer and executive producer on the project. Farrell will executive produce in addition to starring. Fernando Meirelles will direct and executive produce. Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Films also executive produce, as do Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich.

Colin Farrell will play The Penguin on the forthcoming movie The Batman, and he's already lined up an encore.
Per Variety, the actor has joined the cast of the forthcoming Gotham-set HBO Max spinoff of the new movie.
The series is set to chart the character's rise to power in the city's criminal underworld.
While details of the project have been scarce, there was word that Penguin would be involved since the beginning.
The series being a prequel, however, meant that Farrell's involvement was always in question.
Lauren LeFranc is set to pen the script for the series, and The Batman director Matt Reeves is set to be an executive producer.
“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and...
