The Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) is getting a market.
TIFF on Thursday confirmed that it will add an official film market to run alongside its festival program, billing the venture as the “North American hub for buying and selling screen-based projects, intellectual property, and immersive and innovative content across all platforms” that aims to “elevate Canadian and international talent while driving global distribution and sales.”
Toronto has long been a spot where business gets done — major deals for the upcoming The Crow reboot and Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut Woman of the Hour were inked at or just before TIFF last year — but unlike Cannes or Berlin, the festival has never had an official bazaar where buyers and sellers can set up shop. Instead, U.S. and international film buyers and sellers networked and did business informally while circulating around the festival or in hotel rooms, rather than under one roof.

Things have begun to pick up at the summer box office, and three new wide releases will try to keep things rolling along. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big movie this weekend is the latest from director John Krasinski, once again teaming with Paramount Pictures for his family film “If,” starring Ryan Reynolds. “If” stands for “Imaginary Friends” – not to be confused with the recent horror movie “Imaginary” – although this is a family-friendly version of the same general concept, about a little girl named Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) who begins working with Reynold’s character to help pair IFs who have been abandoned by their childhood friends with new kids.
Following his run on “The Office” and directing a couple of indies, Krasinski directed “A Quiet Place” for Paramount in 2018, which opened with $50.2 million and went onto gross $188 million domestic and $334 million globally, based on a $17 million budget.

There’s a trap inherent to making a musical biopic. On the one hand, there’s something undeniably thrilling and crowd-pleasing about seeing a cultural icon like Freddie Mercury, Whitney Houston, or Elvis Presley come alive on the screen. On the other hand, when audiences buy a ticket to see a movie about a famous musician, they expect to hear their songs. More importantly, they expect to hear their voices.
Music history is filled with artists whose vocal qualities have become iconic in their own right, immediately distinctive and filled with incredible personality. Think of Mercury’s bombastic, four-octave vocal range that very few people on the planet are capable of replicating. Or Houston’s soulful, gospel-inspired technique, or Presley’s often-parodied stuttering Southern drawl. It’s not only difficult for an actor cast as these artists to live up to their singing — sometimes, it’s quite literally impossible.

When Sam Taylor-Johnson started working on her Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, she asked screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh to listen to one of Winehouse’s tracks, “Tears Dry on Their Own,” before he started writing. “I kept saying in those early days, ‘I feel like this song is our path to understanding her,’ ” Taylor-Johnson says.
In the deceptively upbeat single about Winehouse’s tumultuous relationship with her on-again, off-again love, Blake Fielder-Civil, she sings, “It’s my responsibility/And you don’t owe nothing to me.”
For Taylor-Johnson, 57, that line spoke to something largely misunderstood about Winehouse, the English singer who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011: Just 27, she left behind an outsize cultural impact. Winehouse’s defining album, Back to Black, sold more than 16 million copies worldwide, and her unique mix of jazz and soul with punk-era defiance would go on to influence artists like Adele, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish.

Since then, he’s been to a couple of Super Bowls, was selected to multiple Pro Bowls, and has become an absolute defensive force on the gridiron. Bosa also made some headlines for his life off the field as well.

Vivian Oparah is aware of the spotlight on her following her BAFTA Film Awards nomination for her breakthrough performance in Searchlight’s romance movie Rye Lane, but she feels it’s imperative that she “stay grounded” because it’s a more disparate path towards stardom for Black actresses.
“For me, this is just the beginning of my career in so many ways, and to be recognized at this level so early on feels super special,” she tells me, “But I still understand that the trajectory of a Black female actor is very different to everyone else’s, so you can’t rest on your laurels because there isn’t a well trodden track that you can just jump on.”
Raine Allen-Miller’s debut feature Rye Lane, a rom-com scripted by Nathan Byron and Tom Melia and set in South London, sees Oparah playing opposite David Jonsson as strangers who have a chance encounter in a gender-neutral toilet and spend the day getting to know each other. Deadline critic Anna Smith called it “a big, energetic bounce forward” for the rom-com genre and called in a “sunny, irreverent take on life and love” that’s at its “most exhilarating when playing out in real time, Before Sunrise-style.” Oparah and Jonsson were lauded for their performances, landing them a Best Joint Lead Performance nomination and Oparah a Breakthrough Performance win at British Independent Film Awards, where the film competed in 16 categories. Then came the BAFTA nom.
“I’m grateful but you also need to stay grounded,” Oparah tells me from Los Angeles, where she’s been meeting her U.S. reps at CAA. She’ll be back in time for the BAFTA ceremony at London’s Southbank Centre on Sunday, February 18.
Yes, the attention that winning the BIFA for Breakthrough Performance and being up for a BAFTA brings is indeed “super special” but Oparah’s mantra is simply: Stay proactive, level-headed “and hard-working.”
I wonder, perhaps somewhat provocatively, whether she felt that a young white female actor in her situation would have had her face splashed all over the British press? Maybe, she answers, but then white female actors “have been working visibly for a lot longer time.”
And, she notes, that “if a moment like this happens in someone [from a traditional acting background]’s career” there’s “a clear path” to their next job. “I feel like for us, because we’ve we’ve only just been let into these spaces, that path hasn’t really been defined yet. It’s just a matter of continuing to work hard and sometimes defining that path for yourself.”
The good news is she is up for the challenge. ”That doesn’t intimidate me,” she says. “It excites me. The playing field still isn’t level and that’s fine. I don’t really internalise it. I just know that I can’t get swept away in the moment.”

Oparah’s table at the BIFAs was next to where I was seated, and the stunned surprise on her face when her name was called brightened into the most gorgeous smile. If she initially looked stunned, it’s because, well, she was.
Equally, she calls the BAFTA nomination “insane and disorienting” because the category has so many people on it “that I am inspired by or look up to. I’m just so happy to be there, man, honestly.” It’s indeed top-level competition: Fantasia Barrino for The Color Purple, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan fir Maestro, Margot Robbie for Barbie and Emma Stone for Poor Things.
The movie’s also up for outstanding British Film, and those recognized on the nomination sheet are director Allen-Miller, producers Yvonne Isimeme Ibazebo and Damian Jones, and screenwriters Bryon and Melia.
The film was shot the film in 2021 during the Covid pandemic, with additional photography filmed a year later. Oparah laughs when she notes, “And now here we are three years on.”
The film’s available on Disney+ and every now and again I sneak a look at it, not only to marvel at the fact that a romcom featuring a Black, seemingly mismatched, couple of strangers — who meet cute in a lavatory in — got made, but also that the characters aren’t your stereotypical Black drug dealer or single mother with five kids. That’s a theme, by the way, that director Cord Jefferson observes in his brilliant American Fiction.
In Allen-Miller’s feature debut, Oparah’s Yas is a costume designer, who offers David Jonsson’s Dom, an accountant, a shoulder to cry on when she hears him wailing in the loo. Yes, Black people lead normal lives.
Yas is a bit of a live-wire, and Oparah loves that she’s not a measured, strait-laced romantic lead. ”She is messy and chaotic and is unapologetic in her mess, and I loved that they wanted to portray that,” she says, though she confesses it required “a lot of stamina.”
“They’re picking us because they want us“
When her agent at Independent Talent Group suggested she send in a self-tape to audition for Rye Lane — remember this was during lockdown and self-taping was novel — she scoffed at the idea, thinking, ‘No-one’s watching all of this’.”
Lo and behold, a month later she was meeting casting director Kharmel Cochrane, who was telling her to “just act cool” reading for the audition. “I was like, ‘I don’t know what that means… Have you been in my house?,'” she says laughing over our Zoom call.
After the audition, she did a chemistry read and got the part. She’s still shocked she got it.
“I was like, ‘You would want me to be in a romantic comedy?’ Usually, if you have a dark-skinned male lead you might have a light-skinned woman, and we’re both dark-skinned. I was like, ’They’re picking us because they want us.”
She admires Allen-Miller for creating “such a loving set” and because the director “cherry picks people that she thinks are extremely talented” but also has “a ‘no dickhead’ policy,” which was felt during filming as “everyone was so warm and collaborative.” For that reason, Oparah happily refers to the shoot as “my best filming experience.”
Hailing Allen-Miller as the “captain of the ship,” she was cheered to see “so early in my career, an example of someone who’s incredibly talented and unwavering in their kindness,” she says warmly. “Everyday you’re looking forward to be at work and seeing someone crafting something really masterfully.”
Meeting with her CAA agents has given her a boost, she says. “I have a lot of writing aspirations and everything that I thought that I wanted, but didn’t know how to access now seems accessible, and that’s the most exciting part for sure.” She adds, “I really want to actualise these writing projects.”
Writing was her first career arc, she jokes, “when I was literally a kid, when I was ten.” While she was appearing in a junior production of Snow White, gleefully playing the Wicked Witch, she and a friend wrote a book called Roxie and Dynamite, about two girls who were adopted and left to their own devices by the mother. “That was so fun to write,” she says, adding: “And I won a poetry contest when I was in primary school — I was like a book worm.” The tome has been carefully preserved by her mother.
Upcoming is a TV series, a comedy thriller called Dead Hot for Amazon’s Prime Video, directed by Sam Arbor and David Sant, and written by Charlotte Coben. Oparah plays Jess — “a very insecure, grief-stricken girl,” according to the actress. The role follows key parts in television shows that include Intelligence season 2, I May Destroy You and Class, a Doctor Who spin-off series.
I saw her at the Old Vic in Fanny & Alexander, but I really noticed her in Brandon Jacobs Jenkins’s exhilarating An Octoroon at the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, my old stomping ground, and when it transferred to the Dorfman at the National Theatre.
She’s definitely up for more theatre. “Something boundary-pushing. I’d be down for that, for sure,” she says.
Out of nowhere, a line she utters in Rye Lane comes into my head [very mild spoiler follows]. It’s where Yas announces that she’s always wanted to own a restaurant called Maggots by Candlelight. I dunno, it’s silly and just makes me smile. I wonder whether some of the lines in Rye Lane will catch on with the public, the way, say, people quote from Notting Hill and Love Actually?
Oparah indulges me, and thinks my point isn’t as daft as it sounds.
“Rye Lane means so much to people in our community and that means the world to me,” she says. “The Black community isn’t a monolith, and we know that, and there are different pockets that this film still manages to resonate with: People from 17 to 60. I hope that it chrysalises in British culture.”
Now this is important: Oparah is a north Londoner, now based in Tottenham, though her early childhood was spent in Highbury. Soccer fans will know where this is headed.
Is she a Tottenham Hotspur supporter? Anticipating the question, Oparah quietly announces that she’s always been a follower of Arsenal. I raise my arms in delight.
“Oh, wow, you too!,” she cries.
Vivian Oparah will go far.

Sam Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” may have access to the late singer’s globally recognized back catalog, but another legendary musician is lending his talents to the project.
Nick Cave, alongside his long-time collaborator Warren Ellis, is scoring the StudioCanal and Focus Features film, which sees “Industry” star Marisa Abela play Winehouse. Abela is joined by a cast including Jack O’Connell (playing Blake Fielder-Civil), Eddie Marsan (Mitch Winehouse), Juliet Cowan (Janis Winehouse) and Lesley Manville.
Variety has been given an exclusive photo taken of Cave, Ellis and Taylor-Johnson recording in the studio earlier this week.
While Winehouse’s own songs, such as “Back to Black” (which featured in the recent trailer), “Valerie” and “Rehab” will undoubtedly take center stage in the film (with most recorded and performed by Abela), Cave and Ellis are understood to have composed about 20-30 minutes of music.

New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) used a new appeals court ruling made against infamous pharma fraudster Martin Shkreli to support her bid to ban former President Donald Trump from New York’s real estate industry.
In a filing last week, James’ office told Judge Arthur Engoron, who presided over Trump’s civil business fraud trial, about the new appeals court ruling against Shkreli.
In this ruling, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower New York federal court’s order.
The order banned Shkreli for life from the pharmaceuticals industry due to his attempts to block competition for a drug, which he increased the price of by over 4,000% overnight in 2015.
Through his efforts, Shkreli raised the price of the antiparasitic drug Daraprim from $17.50 to $750 per tablet.

Almost exactly one year after HBO Max returned to Prime Video, Max is now also available on YouTube’s streaming hub as well.
There was a time when the erstwhile streaming service known as HBO Max was pulled from non-company-owned platforms in an effort by WarnerMedia to keep all of the streaming revenue (and data) generated from the service to itself. After 5 million people reportedly signed up for the service via Prime Video Channels following its May 2020 launch, HBO Max left Prime Video in August 2021. However, after WarnerMedia was acquired by Discovery in spring 2022, the service returned to the streaming hub almost exactly one year ago.
On Tuesday, it was announced that HBO Max’s successor Max has now found itself on another streaming aggregator, YouTube’s Primetime Channels. The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer will be available for a la carte subscriptions beginning on Friday, Dec. 15. Primetime Channels allows consumers...

Buenos Aires — Brazil is beginning to come back as Latin America’s production powerhouse. At Ventana Sur on Monday, representatives of key federal, state and city authorities as well as a leading producer outlined some of the directions the giant would like to take on its return.
That matters. The two words repeated most by the four panelists on a first-day round table at Ventana Sur, Overview Of the Brazilian Audiovisual Industry and Opportunities For Collaboration With São Paulo, were “international co-production.”
Brazil, for other Latin American powers and partners in Europe, can once more bring a lot to the table.
On May 11, the Paulo Gustavo Law, a post-pandemic recovery initiative, released R$2.8 billion ($571 million), for Brazil’s audiovisual sectors. That has now been delivered to Brazil’s 27 states and 5,000 cities, for them to use as they wish, whether in production and distribution incentives or creation of a local knowledge economy,...

The new Alien movie directed by Fede Alvarez began filming in Budapest, Hungary on March 9th and wrapped up in early July, right before the Screen Actors Guild strike began. As far as we know (and here’s everything we do know about the movie that may or may not be called Alien: Romulus), it’s still on track for an August 16, 2024 theatrical release. Alvarez is doing a good job of keeping details under wraps – but over the weekend, he did take to social media to share a picture of the books he was looking through while developing the project.

First, the bad news. A session helping to launch an extended MipJunior on Friday afternoon, underscored just how hard the kids TV business is suffering.
Prefacing a panel discussion on the State of the Kids Entertainment Industry, Challenges & Opportunities, Ampere Analysis’ Cyrine Amor suggested global kids TV commissions were down 48% in August 2023 and down 21% year-on-year for the 12 months period to end of August 2023.
That’s a radically more significant decrease than the 11% decline in commissioning seen across all programs types for the same period.
U.S. SVOD services and pay TV channels are cutting back most sharply, she said. In the U.S. market, public broadcaster commissions of kids programs were down 8% through August. Pay TV commissions, in contrast, had dived 53%, SVOD orders by 33%.
“There are a lot of factors, including inflation,” she said.
Western Europe is also seeing declines, especially in public service broadcaster’s commissioning of kids TV content.

The first look at upcoming horror-thriller What Remains of Us has arrived, with a promotional still showing a short-haired Kit Harington wielding an ax and looking ominously in the distance. Considering the plot, this can’t point to anything good…
As per Arclight Films, What Remains of Us has the following synopsis: “Set deep in rural England, the film is framed from the point of view of Harington’s character’s 10-year-old daughter (Caoilinn Springall). Behind the walls of her family’s isolated, fortified compound, she begins to question her unusual life. She discovers that once a month her father turns into a monster. Her parents say the monster is nothing to be afraid of but when the monster escapes, the girl has to confront the harsh reality of her father’s identity and make a life-altering decision.” Kit Harington plays father to Springall (The Midnight Sky), while Ashleigh Cummings plays the mother.

Workplace dramas are all the rage right now, thanks to films like “Blackberry” and shows likes “Severance,” “The Consultant,” “WeCrashed,” and “Industry.” But who paved the way for works like that? That’s right, Don Draper and “Mad Men,” a series that remains one of the highlights of 21st-century TV. So it’s comforting, in a way, to see Jon Hamm back in a cubicle for “Corner Office,” a new dark comedy hitting theaters and Digital/On Demand next month.

"They don't care about you! You're a number in a column on a spreadsheet...!" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for an indie film called Corner Office, a workplace comedy in the same vein as Office Space and "Severance" with a few tricks up its sleeves. There's been many of these corporate-work-sucks series recently, such as "The Consultant" and "Glamorous" and "WeCrashed" and "Industry", along with all the classics like "The Office". This premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival, and played at the Raindance & Fort Lauderdale Film Fests. In this office satire, Jon Hamm plays Orson, a straight-laced employee at a big, generic corporation who discovers a blissfully empty corner office to get away from his colleagues. But why does this seem to upset them so much? What is really going on? Starring Danny Pudi, Christopher Heyerdahl, Allison Riley, Shawn Macdonald, and Sarah Gadon. That is one magnificent mustache on Hamm,...

Singer-actor Arjun Kanungo’s latest single ‘Danger’ from his album, ‘Industry 2’ has hit the airwaves and exhibits his knack for experimentation.
The song’s music video has been shot in Japan. Following the success of his debut album, ‘Industry’, which garnered over a 100 million streams, Arjun is gearing up for ‘Industry 2’.
The song has a feel of underground funk pop, which is quite a tricky genre to crack.
Reflecting on the song, Arjun shared, “‘Danger’ is one of the first songs we shot for the album. It has a distinct urban pop vibe that I think resonates with everyone. The lyrics and overall feel of the song is classic but still progressive, representing the evolution of music in India.”
The music video showcases Arjun grooving to the beats on the streets of Tokyo. The music video has been shot in an intriguing new-age street style.
