Sophia Bush has nailed down her TV return.
The beloved One Tree Hill and Chicago Pd actress has joined the cast of the Love, Simon sequel series at Disney+, according to Deadline.
The series will be set in the same universe as the 2018 movie and will center on Victor (Michael Cimino), a new student at Creekwood High School.
The teenager is on his own journey of self-discovery as he faces adjusting to a new city, as well as challenges at home. He is also struggling to come to terms with his sexual orientation.
To make things easier, he reaches out to Simon (!) to get assistance with navigating the trials and tribulations of high school.

Sophia Bush will not return to law enforcement after all: CBS has officially passed on the Chicago P.D. alumna’s drama pilot Surveillance, which was in contention for the 2019-2020 TV season.
Surveillance tested “through the roof,” according to Variety, but the end product was not seen as a good fit for the network. The would-be spy thriller centered on Bush’s Maddy, the head of communications for the Nsa, who was torn between protecting the government’s secrets and her own. The cast also included Dennis Haysbert (The Unit), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Catalina Sandino Moreno (The Affair...

When CBS made its new series pickups last month, the network passed on all remaining pilots with the exception of conspiracy thriller drama Surveillance, starring Chicago Pd alumna Sophia Bush. After further deliberation, the network has decided not to proceed with a series order. CBS was considered the only viable home for the project, which is now dead as leading studio 20th Century Fox TV faced the expiration of the cast’s options this weekend.
The pilot, an off-cycle pickup by CBS last summer, had solid testing and had supporters at the network despite its genre being a departure for CBS. The network’s brass looked for ways to take it to series, focusing on non-conventional models, including a possible summer run. CBS does have a pressing need for next summer as its new summer drama series, Blood & Treasure, has done well and was recently renewed for a second season.

Every pilot season has one common thread in that a handful of the biggest frontrunners inevitably wind up being tossed aside. This year was no different as comedies with some of the season's most in-demand stars and new takes on beloved series all wound up filed under "passed over."
While there have been decisions on most pilots, a handful of high-profile projects — ABC's NYPD Blue update, John Mayer's Heart of Life, high-concept Triangle; CBS' Surveillance and Emperor of Malibu; The CW's Glamorous and The Lost Boys — remain in contention or are being ...

With the WGA-Ata war fully raging, diversity discussions at the forefront of the industry and numerous new rivals entering the original-content game, there is arguably more pressure than ever on the broadcast networks to make the right call when it comes to pilot pickups.
Here’s what Variety’s insiders are saying about this season’s offerings.
ABC
On the comedy front, three female-led pilots look to charge ahead at ABC.
An untitled Hannah Simone project has enjoyed support within ABC from the start. Simone’s “Greatest American Hero” pilot at ABC last year was ultimately passed over, but she still has many supporters at the network.
Another hot prospect comes from writer Jessica Gao, fresh off an Emmy win for her work on “Rick and Morty.” Hopes for the untitled pilot are bolstered not only by Gao’s recent success but also by Brian Grazer serving as exec producer.

The Alliance, the new partnership formed by leading European pubcasters to counter the growing power of Netflix and other players, is revving up with two new international dramas, “Around the World in 80 Days” and “Mirage.”
The Alliance was formed last year by France Televisions, Germany’s Zdf and Italy’s Rai. The partners unveiled their two new ambitious shows Wednesday at Series Mania in Lille, France.
For France Televisions in particular, the series are part of a wider move into high-end international drama that also includes French series like “Germinal,” based on Emile Zola’s classic novel, and the adaptation of Guillaume Musso’s bestseller, “La jeune fille et la nuit,” both of which France Televisions is developing outside of the Alliance.

Mexico’s famed “Tres Amigos” have made a name for themselves in Hollywood and beyond, directing their way to a bevy of Oscars. Less well known: the emerging wave of female auteurs from Mexico.
The directors range from Patricia Riggen and Issa Lopez, both busy with Hollywood projects and gaining their own international recognition, to women from indigenous communities, such as María Sojob, a Tzotzil native, and Elizabeth Piña, of Otomí Hñätho descent. The latter two are making their first documentaries. Also part of this wave: Tatiana Huezo and Variety director to watch Alejandra Marquez Abella.
“It’s just marvelous what’s happening now; there are more female directors in features, and even more making short films,” says Maria Novaro, freshly installed head of Mexican Film Institute (Imcine) and who fought against chauvinism early in her directing career. She is best-known for 1991’s uplifting dance drama “Danzon.”

CBS has ordered three more drama pilots: Republic of Sarah from writer Jeffrey Paul King (Elementary), James Corden’s Fulwell 73, Marc Webb and CBS TV Studios; legal drama Courthouse from writer Greg Spottiswood (Remedy) and Warner Bros. TV; and Frankenstein from writer Jason Tracey, Elementary creator Rob Doherty and CBS TV Studios.
Written by King, Republic of Sarah is said to have a Northern Exposure feel. Exclusive: Fox has given a pilot order to Filthy Rich, a soapy drama from The Help writer-director Tate Taylor, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox TV.
This marks the first greenlight decision since AMC President and Gm Charlie Collier took the reins of the broadcast network as Fox CEO of Entertainment last month. I hear Collier, a big fan of Taylor’s work, committed to a pilot order in the room as he and Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn recently met with Taylor and Imagine TV’s Brian Grazer.
Filthy Rich also marks the fourth early pilot order for 20th TV, which is getting a head start on pilot season 2019. The studio, which is preparing for a move from Fox to Disney, also has pilot orders at CBS for drama Surveillance starring Sophia Bush and at ABC for an NYPD Blue sequel and comedy Happy Accident.

Modine will play Man in a Red Tie, a high level and mysterious government operative whose identity and true mission is shrouded in secrecy. The casting will not impact Modine’s role on Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” where he plays the nefarious Dr. Martin Brenner.
