Dear friends, we've been waiting for this for an incredibly long time, and it's finally happened! The long-awaited third season of Bridgerton landed on Netflix yesterday, May 16, two years after Season 2 was released. But amidst all the incredibly high and loud excitement among viewers of one of Netflix's flagship series, there has been fan angst over the streaming service's policy. After all, we waited two full years to finally get... just four episodes of the new season.
Yes, folks, back in December 2023, it was announced that Bridgerton Season 3 would be split into two parts, with a one-month difference in release. For many, this is very disappointing news, and while the Part 1 finale left many on the edge of their seats, such a long wait left an underwhelming impression. So why was Season 3 split in half, and is Netflix's decision to do so putting Bridgerton's popularity at risk of plummeting in the near future?...

We’re now at the end of 2023, and the list of canceled Netflix shows for the year is now complete. Below, we’ll look at all the high-profile cancelations (that have been announced anyway) as of December 2023.
Cancelations are a painful part of being a Netflix subscriber. There’s nothing worse than starting a show only to discover that it’ll never properly conclude. Netflix isn’t the only network by any means to cancel, but given the scale of the service globally and the amount of content it produces, it’s easy to see why Netflix is the boogeyman.
With that said, Netflix does renew plenty, with over 150 shows at any given time set to return for future seasons.
There will also be lots and lots of shows that fall outside of this list into two camps.
Naturally ending shows include The Crown, Firefly Lane, and Never Have I Ever.

How do you measure a year? At IndieWire, it’s in shows streamed and movies watched; every year we get to December and find ourselves exclaiming “That came out this year?!” while measuring the year’s cultural highs and lows through what we consumed on-screen.
In 2023 alone, Netflix premiered more “Ginny & Georgia” and “Firefly Lane,” Emmy hopefuls “Beef” and “The Diplomat,” the heartfelt conclusions of “Never Have I Ever” and “Sex Education,” as well as breakout hits like “The Night Agent,” “One Piece,” and “Wednesday.” It was the year of Joe Goldberg taking London in “You” Season 4, of spinoffs “Queen Charlotte” and “Xo, Kitty,” of “The Witcher” switching leads and “The Crown” ending its reign. Many of those titles, while expected, didn’t even have public release dates at the beginning of the year.
2024 will be no different, and as always we’re starting early and looking ahead. On Netflix,...

New insights are still being unearthed after Netflix dumped the viewership data for nearly its entire catalog from the first half of 2023, which includes more than 18,000 titles.
One of those observations is that young adult and female-centric content are doing especially well for the streamer. In fact, though The Night Agent is ranked No. 1 in terms of hours viewed, that’s really only because the data separates individual seasons of a series. Ginny & Georgia was actually the most-watched title from January to June on Netflix, with a combined 967.2M hours viewed between Seasons 1 and 2.
Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia debuted on January 5, and it alone racked up 665.1M hours viewed.
Season 1 tallied 302.1M (aka 30M “views”), likely reinvigorated by those catching up before watching the new episodes, as well as audiences who were introduced to the title for the first time.

We’re one step closer to getting a new season of Sweet Magnolias on our screens with news today that filming on the fourth season of the series is set to begin in January 2024 and run through to the summer.
In case you missed it, Sweet Magnolias was given a fourth-season renewal on October 19th, following the third-season premiere in the summer on July 20th, 2023. Since that renewal, the writers on the show have been quietly working away.
The last update we had regarding any production was shortly after the renewal, where we got our first look at the crew behind the show on a Zoom call.
Now, courtesy of ProductionWeekly, we’ve got a filming window for season 4, and it looks like it’s a lot longer than normal. Just as a reminder, season 3 began filming in July 2022 before wrapping in October 2022, and season 2 filming...

Netflix’s popular romantic drama Sweet Magnolias has been picked up for a fourth season. Like the first three seasons, Season 4 will consist of 10 episodes. The renewal comes three months after Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias debuted on July 20.
The delay in the announcement was due to logistics, including the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but the pickup was never in doubt as the series continues to draw large, passionate female audiences. Across its three seasons to date, Sweet Magnolias has been in the Global Top 10 for 10 weeks in over 60 countries, with the most recent third season debuting at No. 1.
Still, fans had a mild reason for concern as the Season 3 finale largely wrapped storylines in a nice bow, ending on a dance and a kiss vs. major cliffhangers for the Season 1 and Season 2 enders, including a car crash with lives hanging in the balance and a surprise marriage proposal.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first TV series got off to a strong start in the United States.
Fubar, the action comedy featuring the Terminator star, led Nielsen’s streaming charts for its premiere week of May 22-28 (the show debuted on May 25). Succession was steady in the week leading up to its series finale, and Prime Video’s big-budget Citadel joined the rankings for the week its season finale dropped.
Fubar amassed 1.53 billion minutes of viewing for the week, which equates about 25.57 million hours — about 29 percent of the worldwide total Netflix reported for the show during that week (Nielsen and Netflix use different methods to calculate viewing time). Netflix has renewed the show for a second season. Swat, which joined the rankings the previous week, more than doubled its viewing time to 1.35 billion minutes across Netflix, Hulu and Paramount+. It was the only other title to crack a billion minutes of viewing.

As TV academy voters fill out their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, they will have to consider 163 shows for Best Drama Series. This is only down by eight compared to last year. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.
2020 and 2022 champ “Succession” is in the hunt for its third win in this category and will potentially only have to fend off two of its seven rivals from last year. “Better Call Saul” and “Yellowjackets” returned in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, while “Euphoria,” “Severance,” “Squid Game,” and “Stranger Things” did not. The last remaining 2022 contender, “Ozark,” officially finished its four-season run last April. Also back in the running are former winners “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2017) and “The Crown” (2021).

Swat made its first appearance on Nielsen’s streaming charts a week after CBS briefly canceled the series.
The crime drama cracked the overall top 10, and came in fourth among acquired series, for the week of May 15-21 with 635 million minutes of watch time. On May 5, CBS said it was canceling Swat — then reversed course three days later and picked up a shortened final season of the show. The series’ first five seasons arrived on Netflix on May 17; it also streams on Paramount+ and Hulu.
Jennifer Lopez’s movie The Mother rose to No. 1 overall, swapping places with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which led the previous week. Both declined some week-to-week, but The Mother’s 19 percent dip (to 1.16 billion minutes of viewing) was much smaller than the 44 percent drop (to 1.06 billion minutes) for Queen Charlotte.

The series follows four moms, Kate (Reitman) and Anne (Dani Kind), married to Ryan Belleville, Frankie (Juno Rinaldi), and Valerie (Sarah McVie). In this series, they realize that their lives will move forward despite their challenges with their children.

Laura Benanti has left Amazon’s upcoming TV adaptation of “Cruel Intentions.”
The Tony-winner was set to appear in the recurring guest star role of Caroline’s (Sarah Catherine Hook) mother, Claudia.
“Unfortunately due to a scheduling conflict, I’m no longer able to participate in ‘Cruel Intentions,’” Benanti told me Thursday afternoon. “I’m sure they’ll find a wonderful actress to play this role.”

Netflix’s Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte spent a second straight week as the top title in Nielsen’s streaming rankings — with a viewing time rank almost identical to its opening week. The parent series also rejoined the top 10.
Queen Charlotte recorded 1.88 billion minutes of viewing for the week of May 8-14 — nearly equal to the 1.89 billion minutes from the prior frame. (Taking the numbers out one more decimal point, the series had 1.883 billion minutes for May 8-14 and 1.888 billion for May 1-7.) Missing for the third week in a row from Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings is “Citadel,” Amazon Prime Video’s $185 million spy series starring Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden.
The May 8-14 viewing window marked the series’ second full week of availability and its third week with a chance at making the chart, as it premiered on April 28, meaning that viewership during its first three days of availability would have counted towards the April 24-30 charts. During that first window, Nielsen noted that “Citadel” just missed the streaming originals chart (not to be confused with the overall Top 10 chart) bringing in 306 million viewing minutes and losing out on the tenth place position to John Mulaney’s “Baby J.” Nielsen did not provide information regarding the series’ viewership for the May 1-7 or the May 8-14 windows.

Netflix’s Bridgerton prequel had a big opening — one that also boosted interest in its parent show.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story debuted at No. 1 in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for May 1-7. The six-episode prequel, which premiered May 4, had 1.89 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week, easily outpacing every other title. Nielsen also notes that viewing for Bridgerton tripled for the week, coming in at 125 million minutes (though well outside the top 10 original series).
The 1.89 billion minutes of viewing for Queen Charlotte is equal to 31.47 million hours, a little over 20 percent of the worldwide total (148.28 million hours) that Netflix reported for the show’s opening week (Nielsen and Netflix use different methodologies for their measurement, so the Nielsen figure is a rough estimate of how much of the show’s audience came from the U.S.).
The previous week’s top title, Netflix’s The Diplomat,...

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story was crowned No. 1 on Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week of May 1 to May 7.
The Bridgerton prequel series debuted on May 4 and saw an impressive 1.9B viewing minutes in its first few days on Netflix. That’s quite the feat for a title with only six hour-long episodes. The series was already declared a certified hit by Netflix, which reported earlier this week that it has racked up 432.2M hours viewed to date.
June 1 marks the end of the 28-day measurement period for Queen Charlotte, so the series’ final viewership tally will be in next week from Netflix.
To that end, Season 1 of Bridgerton amassed 125M viewing minutes in the week that Queen Charlotte was released. While that wasn’t enough to boost it onto any of the streaming lists, it was still triple the previous recent weekly viewership averages for Daphne and Simon’s love story.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Fubar” performed an action-packed coup on top of Netflix’s English TV list during the May 22-28 viewing window, taking down “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” for the No. 1 position after a three-week run. The action-comedy, which marks Schwarzenegger’s first-ever TV series, opened to 88.94 million hours viewed in its first four days of availability, making it the most-viewed title this interval.
“Queen Charlotte” fell to third place in the rankings with 42.9 million hours viewed, which is still a solid performance despite the significant drop from the previous week’s 82.39 million hours viewed. Since its debut, the series has had over 66M overall views and was in the Top 10 in 91 countries. Netflix calculates total views by dividing the total hours viewed (432.2 million) by the runtime hours (6.49 hours). Season 2 of “Bridgerton” also remained on the list in 10th place with 12.54 million hours viewed.
