The cinematic journey of Hiroyuki Sanada and his contribution to the fusion of Western and Eastern storytelling have been nothing short of remarkable. Fresh off the heels of his presence in John Wick: Chapter 4, Sanada’s Shōgun success has been a cultural touchstone. But does this success guarantee his quick return to the producer’s chair?
Sanada is involved as a producer and cast member of the acclaimed FX limited series. With a career as dynamic as the Japanese actor’s, his keen sense of storytelling speaks volumes. Indeed, his dedication to cultural integrity and his case-by-case approach to production roles serve as a deliberate blueprint for his future endeavors in the film industry, as he enjoys shaping narratives.
Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in Shōgun
But, despite his success with Shōgun, Sanada’s desire to create from scratch as a producer may not be realized in the near future.

Johnny Depp has responded to recent accusations from actress Lola Glaudini, who claimed the actor berated and mistreated her while filming a scene for the 2001 film Blow.
In a resurfaced episode of the Powerful Truth Angels podcast from Jan. 30, Glaudini recalled one scene where the film’s star Depp was doing a monologue and director Ted Demme (who died in 2002) instructed her to “burst out laughing” when he said a specific line.
“I hear the cue, and I go hahaha, I do a big laugh or whatever,” Glaudini said, noting that she did it for several takes. “Johnny Depp, when they say cut, walks over to me, comes up to me, sticks his finger in my face — and I’m in a bikini on the ground like this — and he comes over and he goes, ‘Who the fuck do you think you are? Who the fuck do you think you are?...

An episode of the “Powerful Truth Angels” podcast from earlier this year has resurfaced in recent days for featuring actor Lola Glaudini recounting a story from the set of the movie “Blow,” where Johnny Depp allegedly berated her for laughing during a take. Glaudini, who was in the background of a scene in which Depp gives a monologue, said that she was instructed by “Blow” director Ted Demme to “burst out laughing” when Depp said one of his lines during the take.
“[Depp] says his monologue. I hear the cue, and I go haha, I do a big laugh or whatever,” Glaudini said, noting she performed the scene this way during a few other takes. “Johnny Depp, when they say cut, walks over to me, comes up to me, sticks his finger in my face and he goes, ‘Who the fuck do you think you are? It is no news that Hollywood has had a long-raging racism problem; one that is still yet to be completely uprooted. While some actors and actresses have stepped forward to try to talk about this problem, their words have only made so much of a difference. However, Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada isn’t one to just sit straight and watch racism unfold.
Hiroyuki Sanada in Shogun
For one who has been one of the most notably commended and respected actors in all of Hollywood and Japan, Sanada doesn’t fear risking his fame when it comes to matters like these. If anything, he shows more guts in calling out Hollywood over its racist practices and problems than perhaps all of Hollywood’s actors and actresses themselves!

Netflix has picked up rights to Japanese financial drama series “Trillion Game” from leading local broadcaster Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) and will begin airing it from Saturday.
The show involves two young men – one a computer programming ace, the other a self-centered but charismatic entrepreneurial type – who have their early career moves thwarted by Dragon Bank and instead start their own company with the seemingly impossible ambition of building a trillion dollar company.
They have no business plan and no capital and must come up with innovative ways to raise money and get ahead.
The story was based on a manga originally written by Inagaki Riichiro and illustrated by Ikegami Ryoichi that was serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior magazine from 2020.

In about four years time, Andrea Iervolino hopes to launch a stadium and TV studios into orbit and broadcast the world’s first zero-gravity Mma fight from space. He’d originally thought that Galactic Combat — his idea for reality-show-meets-sports-tournament following a group of spacebound fighters — would be ready sooner, within two or three years, but he’s says some “technical issues” among his aerospace partners has pushed his expectations back. “But it’s not really far away.”

Russell Crowe is standing on a stage, playing an electric guitar. He’s singing “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash, accompanied by a trumpetist, a drummer, someone at a keyboard, another guitarist, and even four backing singers. From indoor ice skating feats to Russell Crowe rocking the crowd, the 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival has launched with all its unconventional charisma intact.
Audiences who had to weather a downpour clearly showed no signs of dampened spirits as they cheered the fest’s opening gala dancers on ice skates, then rose to their feet to applaud guests Crowe and Alicia Vikander, both of whom accepted honors for their robust range of film work.
Vikander, in accepting the award of fest president Jiri Bartoska, said she was moved to be celebrated in the Czech Republic, where her international career first took off with the 2012 shoot of “A Royal Affair.”

Johnny Depp returned to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Friday, kind of — onscreen, not in person.
The opening ceremony of the 57th edition of Central Europe’s biggest cinema celebration in the Czech spa town on Friday featured the much-anticipated premiere of its annual trailer starring the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.
It was directed by film and advertising director Ivan Zachariáš and is set in the Hotel Gellért, an art nouveau hotel in Budapest. With Depp working in Europe at the time of production, a stopover in Hungary fit into his work schedule, the fest noted. “Right at the start of the shoot he told me that he would prefer to improvise,” said Zachariáš. “I was initially a bit taken aback, but it turned out to be a great idea, since Johnny ended up putting even more of his own personality into the trailer.”
Concluded the director: “We had great fun.

Get your torches and canisters of snuff ready because Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, a period piece starring Johnny Depp as King Louis Xv, is opening the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Maïwenn directs the feature in addition to co-starring as Louis Xv’s courtesan lover. Filming began in July last year in locations ranging from Versailles and other chateaux in Paris to France’s Why Not studio. Jeanne du Barry is Depp’s first production in three years and is bound to cause quite a stir upon release. Depp won his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard last year and is rebuilding his Hollywood reputation. While some filmmakers continue to see Depp as box office poison, Maïwenn is confident he will deliver a top-tier performance in the upcoming film.
During his time, Louis Xv reigned for 59 years, the longest in the history of France after that of Louis Xiv. Though nicknamed “the beloved,...

Japan’s Hiroyuki Sanada has become one of Hollywood’s most familiar Asian actors, with action roles in franchises like “Mortal Kombat,” “Avengers: Endgame” and now “John Wick 4,” as well as nuanced character turns in “Minamata” and “The Railway Man.”
“John Wick” star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski created a role especially for Sanada so that he could join the action-packed universe. But it is the upcoming “Shogun” series for FX and Hulu that has given the Hollywood-based Sanada a new calling.
What do you like most about your part in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’?
There’s a scene between John Wick and my character Shimazu Koji, up on the roof top where the two old friends are drinking whiskey. Just talking. Talking, not fighting. That’s a very rare thing in this movie. It created atmosphere and established their chemistry.
As an action franchise, “John Wick” is pretty intense.

The Strays is a thriller movie written and directed by Nathaniel Martello-White starring Ashley Madekwe.
The Strays appears to be a classic tv film with an actress that has been in hundreds of these and, however, the film has a look and theme that is more film centered close to Don´t Worry Darling or Us (the Jordan Peele movie) in its subject, although it is more English in its aesthetics.
Movie Review The Strays (2023)
This movie poses interesting considerations in a thriller, a little like the “new horror” of Peele, with intrigue that basically revolves around a greater vindication, which is entertainment in the form of a nightmare in English suburbia.
However, the great director with his ironies and suspense formulas is absent in this pic. Here the suspense is more horror and the intentions posed in the first third of the movie (especially in the look of the...

“When you start looking in the darkness, you’ll see something. That’s the idea I wanted to depict and convey,” Kogahara Takeshi told Variety, after the screening of his debut “Nagisa,” a movie where darkness and silences play a crucial role.
The plot follows a young man (played by Yuzu Aoki) who suffers from guilt related to the death of his adored sister (Yamazaki Nanami), and encounters her ghost in a haunted tunnel. Thus, he keeps on visiting the tunnel to re-experience his past.
“The core idea came up when I was studying at the film school, a long time ago – 20 years ago or so. The idea was to [have a character] go into a tunnel and there see someone else, a ghost of someone special, [someone] you belong to.”
“Nagisa”
While continuing his career path, this idea remained stuck in Kogahara’s mind, until he managed to write a first draft of “Nagisa” eight years ago.

A new image (seen above) of Johnny Depp as Louis Xv from his upcoming film Jeanne Du Barry has surfaced and it shows Depp in full costume.
The photo of Johnny Depp as Louis Xv in full costume, just one of many elaborate ones that Depp has worn throughout his career. A previous teaser photo showed Depp as Louis Xv in profile, his powdered makeup and wig encapsulating the era.
Directed by French actress and filmmaker Maïwenn, Jeanne Du Barry (also known as La Favorite) tells the story of “the life of Jeanne Bécu who was born as the illegitimate daughter of an impoverished seamstress in 1743 and went on to rise through the Court of Louis Xv to become his last official mistress.”
Maïwenn will co-star with Johnny Depp as the titular Jeanne Du Barry, Louis Xv’s mistress who was executed during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror.

Johnny Depp reemerged in front of movie and television fans last night, appearing as the astronaut mascot at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Well, sort of. An apparently pre-recorded video of Depp’s head was planted on the body of the Moonperson (formerly known as the Moon Man) strung from the ceiling.
Johnny Depp made three brief appearances throughout the show. During his first appearance, he told the audience, “Hey, you know what? I needed the work.” Later on, he said, “I just want you guys to know I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need. Anything. Fresh off his victory in the Amber Heard defamation suit, Johnny Depp is all set to direct a movie 25 years after he made his first, a neo-Western in which he co-starred with Marlon Brando, reports Variety. Depp’s directorial debut film, ‘The Brave’ (1997), was panned by critics and it also tanked commercially.
The actor will now return behind the camera, with Al Pacino acting as producer, for ‘Modigliani’, a biographical drama about Italian artist and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, who lived between 1884 and 1920.
It is being viewed as an attempt by Depp to restart his life after having seen Hollywood steer clear of him and being left with only European projects, notably French filmmaker Maiwenn’s upcoming film ‘Jeanne du Barry’, a historical romance drama about a royal’s concubine, in which he plays the controversial King Louis Xv, notes ‘Variety’.

French filmmaker Maïwenn is teasing the first look at Johnny Depp as the controversial King Louis Xv in “Jeanne du Barry,” a historical romance drama about a royal’s concubine.
It’s Depp’s first film role since his highly publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. The jury found that Heard had defamed Depp in her 2018 Washington Post opinion piece, which alluded to being a victim of domestic violence. However, the jury also found that Depp defamed Heard, through his attorney, while fighting back against her charges.
“Jeanne du Barry” started shooting at the end of July (after the trial wrapped in June) in Paris and the Île-de-France region, using landmarks like the Palace of Versailles as backdrops. Maïwenn, who also wrote the screenplay with Teddy Lussi-Modeste, is playing the title role.
The story follows Jeanne, a young working-class woman who uses her intelligence and allure to climb the social hierarchy.

Johnny Depp’s return to acting following his defamation trial against Amber Heard is not being backed by Netflix. Bloomberg reported that the Depp-starring French movie “La Favorite” is receiving “financial backing” from Netflix, but a source close to the streaming giant told Variety this reporting is not true. Netflix is not financing the movie but has licensed the film to stream in France only after it completes the country’s 15-month theatrical window. The film is not a Netflix original.
“La Favorite” is set to star Depp as French king Louis Xv. “Mon Roi” filmmaker Maiwenn is directing the movie, which Variety reported earlier this year is filming this summer for three months at locations that include the Versailles Palace. Maiwenn is also starring in the movie as Jeanne du Barry, a countess who was Louis Xv’s last mistress.

And while Depp may have been handed a sweeping legal victory on June 1, that win can’t undo years of a deteriorating public image amid an acrimonious divorce from Heard. The question is whether the verdict wiped off enough dirt for any studio to roll the dice on casting him.
After six weeks of trial revealing salacious text messages and audio recordings of violent altercations, a Virginia jury sided with Depp on claims that he was defamed when Heard wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post in which she called herself a domestic abuse survivor. Although Heard won on one of her counterclaims concerning allegations — via Depp’s former attorney Adam Waldman — that her abuse claims were a hoax, she was awarded just 2 million compared to Depp’s...

Johnny Depp’s agent testified on Monday that Depp was to receive 22.5 million to star in the sixth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, but Disney decided to go “in a different direction” after Amber Heard published an op-ed reviving her domestic abuse allegations.
Jack Whigham, who represented Depp at Creative Artists Agency and later at Range Media Partners, testified that the December 2018 piece in the Washington Post had a “catastrophic” impact on Depp’s career.
“After the op-ed it was impossible to get him a studio film,” Whigham testified.
Depp is suing Heard for 50 million, alleging that she destroyed his career with false allegations of domestic violence. The trial in Fairfax, Va., entered its fourth week on Monday, as Depp’s team continued to call witnesses to support his claims.
Heard’s side has yet to begin offering evidence, and she is expected to tell her own side of the story later in the trial.

The latest act in the very public unraveling of Johnny Depp began last week in a courtroom in northern Virginia, pulling back the curtain on the secretive world of celebrity enablers and hangers-on.
Depp is suing his ex-wife, Amber Heard, for 50 million for describing herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse” in a 2018 Washington Post opinion piece. That revived allegations she made when the couple divorced in 2016 — about which they had each promised to remain silent — and in Depp’s view the public characterization could not go unchallenged.
But after Depp lost a similar case in London in 2020, his public reputation — and career — are in tatters. He has not appeared in a major studio film since “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” in 2018, although he has starred in smaller indies such as “Minamata.” Relitigating these issues, which entails resurfacing text messages in which he called Heard a “c—” and fantasized about her “rotting corpse,...
