Is there any entertainment force more seemingly unstoppable than true crime? Humanity’s most dastardly deeds have fascinated audiences for centuries. And in the modern age, the streaming wars and social media are feeding, accelerating, and encouraging that fixation at an unprecedented scale and rate. The result is an unending cycle of notorious crimes revisited via documentary that’s punctuated by real-time internet clips showing everything from minor fights in grocery stores to homicides carried out by police.
As the world gets darker, many TV and movie lovers have turned their attention to this increasingly macabre subject matter to simultaneously distract themselves from the news and lean into the fraught reality of narratives considering real crimes. From podcasts and documentaries to prestige dramas and sitcoms lampooning the genre, true crime is everywhere. Learning about its most frequented subject areas — corrupt police, biased justice systems, unreliable evidence, and the like — is...

Skye Borgman’s deep dive into an unsolved serial killer’s crimes unearths a whole family tree of pain, pathos, and progress.
“A cold case is no substitute for a warm life.”
True crime documentaries and serial killer investigations have become the latest cash cow for streaming services. Dozens of these slickly-packaged products flood streamers as they elicit shock and awe through sensationalized storytelling. That’s not to say that all of these serial killer docu-series are disposable, but there’s definitely a right and wrong way to engage in these investigative narratives. The Truth About Jim benefits from its accomplished director, Skye Borgman, who’s responsible for the gripping true crime documentary, Abducted in Plain Sight, which unpacks the complicated tale of the Broberg family, as well as Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries revival. The Truth About Jim tells a story that’s comfortably in Borgman’s wheelhouse that attempts...

A quick and partial mea culpa to Amazon’s Lore, Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries reboot and several other semi-recent spooky, based-on-fact anthology series to which I gave mixed reviews for general unevenness and because I’d seen the same format used on many superior shows over the years.
It isn’t that Lore and Unsolved Mysteries have suddenly become good shows in my memory. But watching Peacock’s new spooky, based-on-fact anthology series John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams, I was struck by how often episodes had me yearning not for installments of the genre’s top-tier programs but just for the proficient comforts of uneven mediocrity.
Having John Carpenter’s name atop Suburban Screams isn’t wholly symbolic. He co-wrote the series’ forgettable musical theme and he directed one of its six installments. The truth, though, is that affixing the “John Carpenter” brand makes it only worthy of being reviewed,...

Plot: John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams is a genre-busting, unscripted horror anthology series from the mind of legendary director, writer, and producer John Carpenter. The series explores the dark secrets and unspeakable evil that sometimes lurks beneath the surface of the sun-drenched streets, manicured lawns, and friendly neighbors of suburbia. Each episode focuses on one true tale of terror, told by the real people who lived through it. Their firsthand accounts are brought to life through premium cinematic scene work, news clips, home photos, and archival footage, combining the visual language of horror films with the tools and techniques of documentaries, creating a uniquely frightening experience for viewers.
Review: As one of the most famous horror directors of all time, John Carpenter’s name carries enough weight that placing it above the title of a film or series is enough to make it worth checking out. Despite not having directed...

“No One Will Save You,” the tale of a young woman (Kaitlyn Dever) battling extraterrestrial foes, just premiered on Hulu. In many ways it’s the ultimate scary alien invasion movie, throwing in menacing extraterrestrial intruders, abductions, ominously hovering UFOs and even a creepy “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” motif with gooey creatures nestled in your throat. It’s very scary and very good – so good, in fact, that you’ll probably have a hankering for more creepy stories of alien visitation.
To that end, here are five more scary-as-hell alien movies to watch after you finish “No One Will Save You” – and where you can watch them right now.

Last month, we learned that Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Television is teaming up with Boardwalk Pictures and Vice Studios to bring the four-part docu-series Encounters to the Netflix streaming service on September 27th. With that date right around the corner, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for the series and you can check it out in the embed above.
Yon Motskin, creator of the Max series Generation Hustle, has directed the four episodes of Encounters, which will explore four extraordinary true stories of encounters with otherworldly phenomena. Each episode tells a single story: strange lights in the sky over small-town Texas; submersible space crafts haunting a coastal Welsh village; an alien encounter with schoolchildren in Zimbabwe and non-human intelligence reportedly interfering with a nuclear power plant in Japan. Told from the perspective of firsthand experiencers – in the places where the sightings occurred – and guided by scientists and military personnel,...

"I know that house, and I know what it's capable of." Peacock has unveiled a quick 60-second official trailer for their Halloween streaming series called John Carpenter's Suburban Screams - out in October (obviously). After releasing the two new Halloween movies directly streaming on Peacock, the service has now partnered with Carpetner to let him develop his own horror anthology series - basically the same thing Netflix did with Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. "Each episode will delve into the monstrous evil that lurks beneath the surface of friendly suburbia through the lens of one frightful tale... In addition to firsthand accounts, the episodes will include cinematic reenactments, personal archives, and historic town press coverage." One description says this is like Unsolved Mysteries from John Carpenter, with dramatic recreations. Scary! Episodes by John Carpenter, Michelle Latimer, Jan Pavlacky, Jordan Roberts. The anthology cast: Chloe Zeitounian, Paul A Maynard,...

It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.
Before the era of televised paranormal investigators like Zak Bagans of "Ghost Adventures" or "Kindred Spirits" stars Amy Bruni and Adam Berry, there were Ed and Lorraine Warren. Ed was a professed demonologist, while...

Hersha Parady, who won the hearts of Little House on the Prairie viewers with her 1977-1980 portrayal of Walnut Grove schoolteacher and Ingalls Family friend Alice Garvey, died yesterday in Norfolk, Virginia, following surgery last month for the brain cancer meningioma. She was 78.
Her death was announced by her son Jonathan Peverall. Parady died in Peverall’s hometown of Norfolk.
In a Facebook post last night, co-star and friend Alison Arngrim, who played the troublemaking Nellie Oleson on Little House, wrote, “Our wild, untameable, talented Hersha has left us. Rest in power.”
Although Parady made her TV debut in 1971 on the series Bearcats! and appeared that decade on Mannix, The Waltons and CBS Afternoon Playhouse, she debuted in her signature role of the Little House teacher in 1977, beginning a three-season run that would end with one of the series’ most shocking and well-remembered installments: The February 4, 1980, episode titled “May We Make Them Proud: Part I.

Hersha Parady, whose three-season run as Walnut Grove schoolteacher Alice Garvey on Little House on the Prairie came to an unforgettable, dark end for fans of the beloved NBC drama, has died. She was 78.
Parady died Wednesday in the Norfolk, Virginia, home of her son, Jonathan Peverall, he told The Hollywood Reporter. She had been dealing with a brain tumor, and he had set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.
Parady and former NFL star Merlin Olsen were introduced as wife and husband Alice and Jonathan Garvey on the Michael Landon-created Little House on the Prairie during the season-four opening episode, “Castoffs,” in September 1977.
On the sixth-season installment “May We Make Them Proud,” which aired as a two-hour episode during a sweeps ratings period in February 1980, Alice races into the School for the Blind, which has caught fire, to save some children inside, including Mary and Adam’s (Melissa Sue Anderson,...

Two questions linger over the new ABC News Studios/Hulu limited docuseries Demons & Saviors. Did Christina Boyer possess some kind of telekinetic power? And, more pertinently, did she murder her three-year-old daughter, a crime for which she has been incarcerated in Georgia since 1992? Demons & Saviors does its best to merge these two stories, largely by suggesting Boyer’s sensationalist labeling as “the poltergeist girl” helped a small-town Georgia legal system railroad her behind bars. The end result sometimes feels like two different documentaries, but the impact is still considerable,...

From "Making a Murderer," to the trend-setting "Tiger King," to the 2020 revival of "Unsolved Mysteries" (and its sometimes-questionable relationship with mental health), Netflix has become home to many a true crime documentary series. The latest, "Missing: Dead or Alive?," hit the streamer earlier this month, and it's been burning up the Netflix Top 10 recently with an approach that's more cinematic -- though whether that pays off is another question entirely.
According to Netflix's own stats, the series was watched for a total of 15.29 million hours during the week of May 15-May 21,2023. To give a bit more context to that otherwise largely useless metric, there are four episodes in total with a runtime of 3 hours, so if everyone who watched the series saw it through to the end, that means "Missing: Dead Or Alive" has been viewed by at least 5 million people.

And so the focus will not be on them and they will not be named. It is solely to focus on a film, not the actions of the filmmaker. It’s a hard line to walk with art and the artist when it comes to this film and wherever you land on how you view this is fair. But as a monster movie, we will review as just that… a movie.

Good luck trying to slow Sling Freestream down. The hub for free ad-supported TV (Fast) channels added 16 new channels during the last week of March, and apparently liked that number so much that it is replicating the addition this week. Freestream is free, or you can simply enjoy the add-ons if you subscribe to the full Sling TV, which is a budget way to watch your favorite cable channels.

Entertainment, news, and the paranormal are connected more than you might think. I find it interesting that every person in the paranormal community I’ve talked with is also a horror nerd like me—the horror genre and belief in the unexplained are undeniably intertwined.
That’s why for this month’s Dead Time, I wanted to talk with paranormal journalist, TV host, podcaster, and fellow spooky nerd Aaron Sagers.
During his extensive career as a journalist, Sagers has appeared on numerous TV shows and online videos. You’ve probably seen him analyzing bizarre videos on Paranormal Caught on Camera on Travel Channel and Discovery Plus or hosting shows like Discovery’s Paranormal Lockdown: Evidence Revealed or the web series Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Ripley’s Road Trip. Sagers has a new show on Netflix called 28 Days Haunted, which is an intriguing experiment using three paranormal teams...

Like so many business success stories, FilmRise started with a huge failure.
It was 2009, and City Lights Media, the TV production and distribution company founded and run by Danny Fisher and his brother Jack, had just gone bust. The company was nearly 30 years old and an industry staple, the producer of dozens of shows, including the Food Network hit Chopped, and home to one of the biggest postproduction operations in New York. It had more than 400 employees.
But City Lights didn’t survive the financial crash. The company was heavily leveraged, with some 15 million in debt personally guaranteed by Danny. When the world’s economy pancaked, he was forced to file for personal bankruptcy. His savings were wiped out. He was left with 1,700 in his checking account and no idea what to do next.
“I was luckier than most,” says Fisher. “My wife, Barbara, was still working as a psychologist.

A potential writers strike would be incredibly harmful for many in Hollywood, but there’s one sector of the entertainment industry that is quietly optimistic that it could lead to a boom for them: the unscripted television makers.
As history has shown, there’s also precedent for an uptick — from the 1988 strike that led to the creation of Fox’s Cops and the 2007-08 strike, which bolstered unscripted shows such as The Amazing Race and Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

I was fourteen years old. I had just gotten home from a friend’s house after dark and noticed my parents weren’t home. Nice. I flipped on the cable TV with the clicker, not even bothering to find a channel. I’m loafing around, snacking or whatever. Then I hear blood curdling screams and the TV finally catches my attention.
Now, what I was about to experience could not have happened today. Today I would just whip out my phone and Google it and understand this situation. Then I’d hop on Twitter to see what everyone thinks. Instead, what I was about to see scared the living shit out of me the same way I would imagine witnessing a murder in the middle of the woods would. It would also send me on a weeks long goose chase of pure unadulterated fear and culminate in me feeling extremely stupid.

The documentaries released in 2022 are a versatile mix. Sure, the year saw the expected Netflix true-crime series (including the return of the hit "Unsolved Mysteries" reboot) and celebrations of trailblazers, but we also got the light-hearted, high-spirited stories of unbelievable fraudsters ("The Tinder Swindler"), deeply disturbing stories of human evil ("Our Father"), and scandalous stories of corporate evil ("White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch").
The genre is in undergoing a bit of a boom. For lovers of non-fiction filmmaking, it feels like we have more options now than ever. Last year's critical hit "Flee" redefined what a documentary film looks like, paving the way for the critically acclaimed Canadian animated documentary, "Eternal Spring (長春)." Apple TV+ released a speculative nature documentary series depicting an imagined cretaceous period with "Prehistoric Planet." Neon's trippy indie hit "Moonage Daydream" celebrates David Bowie in a manner wholly unique and fitting for the experimental pop star.

Welcome back to Dead Time! I hope you left a light on because this month things got really weird when I chatted with the co-hosts of the What’s Up Weirdo podcast, John E.L. Tenney and Jessica Knapik. John and Jessica are best friends who decided to record their real-life phone conversations where they discuss everything from the paranormal to UFO’s, true crime, and horror movies—and the What’s Up Weirdo podcast was born.
Over the past thirty years, John E.L. Tenney has become one of the most well-known and sought-after investigators of strange phenomena. He has appeared on many paranormal shows, including Unsolved Mysteries, Sightings, Hellier, and Kindred Spirits, and is the author of more than a dozen books. The Series: "Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel"
Where You Can Stream It: Netflix
The Pitch: In 2013, 21-year-old Chinese-Canadian tourist Elisa Lam was found dead in a water tank on the roof of the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Her disappearance and death was a mystery that made international news, though it later came out — once all the facts were in — that she had, in all probability, accidentally drowned while experiencing a bipolar episode.
In the meantime, compounded by a viral video with the last known footage of Lam, demonstrating erratic behavior on the hotel elevator, the case became an internet phenomenon. The first season of shows and podcasts like "True Detective" and "Serial" was just over the horizon in 2014, and this one,...

The season finale of House of the Dragon nearly equaled a season high in streaming minutes, moving the HBO series to No. 3 overall in Nielsen’s rankings for Oct. 17-23. The Watcher repeated as the top title, and Netflix got a strong opening from its movie The School for Good and Evil.

HBO’s “House of the Dragon” closed its debut season on a high note. During the Oct. 17-23 viewing window, the last day of which saw the “Game of Thrones” prequel air its season finale, placed third on Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 chart and scored just over 1 billion minutes viewed on HBO Max.
Because “House of the Dragon” airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. and drops simultaneously on HBO Max, the finale’s first few hours of availability were included in this week’s figures. That means when Nielsen releases its findings for the week of Oct. 24-30, the chart will reflect how the show fared throughout the seven days after which Episode 10 was released.
Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video’s “The Rings of Power” proved to be a little lacking in staying power, with the “Lord of the Rings” prequel series dropping off the overall chart one week after airing...

Unsolved Mysteries has been airing, off and on, presented in different styles and by different hosts, for thirty-five years at this point. It all began with specials hosted by Raymond Burr, Karl Malden, and Robert Stack in 1987, followed by a series that went for several years with Stack as the host. (And Virginia Madsen being added as co-host eventually.) Dennis Farina hosted a revival that lasted a few years. And now a new version of the show that doesn’t have a host is set up at the Netflix streaming service. We’ve been watching and being disturbed by episodes of Unsolved Mysteries for a long time – and you can find out what we have to say about the Stack era of show in the new episode of the Horror TV Shows We Miss video series. The Zoe Saldaña-led limited series “From Scratch” was Netflix’s top title between Oct. 24 and Oct. 30, bringing in 72 million hours viewed.
This viewing period marks the romance’s first full week of availability on Netflix; last week, it debuted at No. 3 with 32.2 million hours viewed after three days on the streamer. “From Scratch” is based on the memoir of the same name by Tembi Locke, who co-created the series with her sister, showrunner Attica Locke.
“From Scratch” is the first project to outrank Ryan Murphy’s recent output at Netflix. Between Jeffrey Dahmer drama “Monster” and his limited series “The Watcher,” Murphy spent five weeks at the top of the chart. During the Oct. 24-30 window, “The Watcher” dropped to second place on the English-language TV chart with 67.5 million hours viewed — still an impressive showing for its second full week on Netflix. “Monster,” in its fifth full week, took fifth place with 41 million hours.

Ryan Murphy continues to lead the competition for the fifth week in a row.
After toppling “Monster,” the Evan Peters-led limited series on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, to the No. 2 spot, Murphy’s “The Watcher” sits at No.1 on the Netflix top 10 chart for the second consecutive week. During the Oct. 17-23 viewing window, the series garnered 148.2 million hours viewed in its first full week of availability. Co-created with Ian Brennan and adapted from a true story originally told in a 2018 New York magazine story, Naomi Watts and Bobby Canavale star in the mystery thriller as a married couple on the hunt to find the identity of their haunting stalker.
In its fourth full week of streaming, “Monster” racked up 69.1 million hours viewed, furthering its solidified stance as second most-watched English-language series Netflix has ever had behind “Stranger Things” Season 4. The limited series crossed the milestone after hitting 701.4 million hours viewed earlier this month.

Netflix is no stranger to tackling the true crime genre. Over the years, the streaming giant has released a handful of bone-chilling titles that center around mind-boggling true crime stories, ranging from dramatized, acclaimed series like "Mindhunter," to docuseries like "Unsolved Mysteries" and "The Tinder Swindler."
The platform is now bringing the unbelievable true story of serial killer Charles Cullen to the big screen in "The Good Nurse," which is based on Charles Graeber's 2013 book of the same name. The original film, which stars Academy Award winners Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain, centers around Cullen's 16-year killing spree as a nurse throughout several New Jersey and Pennsylvania hospitals and, more specifically, the heroic nurse who stopped him.
"The Good Nurse" is set to hit Netflix Oct. 26. Read on to learn more about the baffling crimes of Charles Cullen.

In 2020 Netflix premiered its reboot of “Unsolved Mysteries,” the popular true-crime series that ran from 1987 until 2002. Host Robert Stack invited viewers to “help solve a mystery,” and its original run — alongside “America’s Most Wanted” and “Rescue 911” — helped launch the national appetite for true crime.
Netflix’s reboot was seen as another move on the part of the streamer to harness the power of nostalgia. But the show’s first season didn’t possess the magic of the original series, focusing on one mystery per episode and generally relying on murder and disappearances.
Now in its third season, “Unsolved Mysteries” is finally leaning more towards the beloved original, blending the usual unexplained murders and disappearances with episodes focused on UFOs and ghosts — though still no sign of “Unsolved” staple “Lost Loves,” which focused on reuniting adopted children with their families. There's a certain nostalgia that comes with "Unsolved Mysteries." The show, in its original incarnation, brought mysterious tales of murders, disappearances, and of course, the supernatural. These stories were hosted by the singular presence of Robert Stack, who stalked around fog machine-heavy sets wearing a trench coat, as if he were really pounding the pavement and investigating these mysteries himself. I can distinctly remember huddling close to our boxy old TV at night, watching "Unsolved Mysteries" with all the lights off, and growing more and more terrified. It was a fun type of fear, even though it shouldn't have been. These were true stories of loss and death (and sometimes ghosts and aliens) that affected real people. In some cases, it ruined their lives. And yet, it was hard not to grow excited as Robert Stack's smooth, deep voice intoned horrors at every turn.

When it comes to spooky, the ’90s just did it best – and ’90s kids couldn’t get enough of it.
We grew up the last decade when being a witch was cool thanks to that “hippie witch” grunge aesthetic and the popularity of Twin Peaks. Bizarre puppet-driven movies like The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and The Neverending Story seemed to endlessly play on TV, meanwhile, were you even a 90s kid if you didn’t have the full set of Goosebumps books and a few of the real scary ones… Point Horror!?
With the resurgence of slasher flicks thanks to Scream, television shows such as X-Files, Buffy and Charmed and “real stories” found on Strange But True in the UK and Unsolved Mysteries in the US, horror had gone mainstream and kids were more than aware of it – we were hooked on it. If you weren’t sharing urban legends at...

Your days of internet sleuthing aren't over just yet! On Oct. 4, Netflix finally released the trailer for season three of "Unsolved Mysteries" after it was renewed in 2021. "Are you ready to solve a mystery? The global phenomenon returns with nine new mysteries in Volume 3. Join the search and perhaps you may be able to help solve a mystery," the trailer's description reads.
Just like the previous two seasons, the third installment of the true-crime series will include more mysterious disappearances, tragic events, and unexplained occurrences. "The 'Unsolved Mysteries' production team at Cosgrove/Meurer Productions couldn't be more excited about developing volume 3 of our successful Netflix series," executive producer Terry Dunn Meurer previously said in a statement.
In a separate statement, 21 Laps Entertainment executive producers Shawn Levy and Josh Barry added, "We feel thrilled and privileged to be filming volume 3 of 'Unsolved Mysteries.' The massive success...

Halloween season is in full swing now that we've entered October. Today, Netflix released a trailer for the third volume in their reboot of the "Unsolved Mysteries" series. As someone who used to watch the old ones hosted by Robert Stack, this new version has been a lot of ... well, I guess "fun" isn't the right word to use, since these are real stories and real people involved. Perhaps the best way to say this is that the mysteries are intriguing to watch and ponder over. The stories in the first two volumes were fascinating, and I also love the idea that these are mysteries that the public can help solve if they gather the right clues.
Public consciousness can be a rough thing when you're talking about social media or politics. Still, if you can get a big chunk of the world to look with millions of fresh eyes at an unsolved crime,...
