Horror fans are well catered to in this month’s slimmed-down selection of film premieres on Sky Cinema, with serial killer body-swap comedy Freaky, The Forever Purge, and Ben Wheatley’s pandemic weird-fest In the Earth. Joining those is the latest from Steven Soderbergh, whose Contagion enjoyed a surge of interest early on in the pandemic. His new feature is Kimi, a thriller starring Zoe Kravitz set during the time of Covid-19.
For half-term viewing with the kids off school, there’s Space Jam: A New Legacy and Dream Horse, as well as the many archive titles already available. Speaking of which, save Book of Love, there doesn’t seem to be a big Valentine’s night-in premiere this year, so perhaps look out one of our picks.
And here’s what else is coming to Sky Cinema in the UK this February.

Bergman Island (Mia Hansen-Løve)
Parenthood, relationships, and the creative process: three key elements of the cinema of Mia Hansen-Løve casually combine in Bergman Island, a playfully self-aware meta-portrait of the filmmaker and, indeed, of filmmaking itself. Introspective, inventive, and effortlessly calm; it follows a couple, both screenwriters, on an idyllic work retreat to Fårö, an island in the Baltic Sea (population: 498) just off the South East of Sweden. It’s the place Ingmar Bergman called home for the majority of his life, where he made many films and eventually died. – Rory O. (full review)

Home viewing competition this week was stiff. It included the HBO Max same-day premiere of “The Suicide Squad” and ongoing availability of Disney’s “Black Widow” and “Jungle Cruise” for an extra $29.99 for Disney+ subscribers. The two titles that could break through were “Pig” (Neon/$6.99) and “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” (Focus/$19.99), both of which added VOD play after three weeks in theaters.
Many Nicolas Cage movies are genre-exercise VOD exclusives, but “Pig” stands out with excellent reviews (82 Metacritic) and his performance as a truffle hunter in search of his beloved pig received some the best reviews of his career. It placed on all three charts and as high as #2 on iTunes.
“Roadrunner,” released Friday, is #7 on iTunes. Vudu reports that though the title is just below its top 10, it was their third-highest ranked new release.
Samba TV, an app that tracks home viewing, estimates 2.8 million U.S. households saw “Squad” this weekend.

Helen Mirren (The Queen) will star as “The Iron Lady of Israel.” The film shoots in October in Europe.
Written by Nicholas Martin (Florence Foster Jenkins), Golda is a ticking-clock thriller following the intensely dramatic events and controversial decisions Meir faced during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. “Together,” a new comedy from “Billy Elliot” director Stephen Daldry, will be distributed by Bleecker Street after the indie studio secured North American rights to the film.
“Together” stars James McAvoy (“Wanted”) and Sharon Horgan (“Catastrophe”). The film follows two partners who are forced to re-evaluate themselves and their relationship during lockdown, an experience that should resonate with moviegoers still shaking off the linger effects of Covid-era quarantine.
“Stephen Daldry has brought together two of the most engaging performers to bring to life the story of a family going through what we all went through over the last year,” said Andrew Karpen, CEO of Bleecker Street. “The biting comedy, the never-ending uncertainty and the intense frustration of being stuck in quarantine are at the heart of Daldry’s finely attuned film about the complexity and importance of human connections.”

Universal Pictures’ ninth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise more than set the pace at the Australian box office on the weekend, raking in nearly $9 million, including an opening day total of $1.48 million.
The film’s opening overtakes Warner Bros.’ Godzilla vs. Kong as the highest of any film post-Covid, and is only slightly below that of The Fate of the Furious, which took $10 million over the Easter long weekend in 2017.
Director Justin Lin’s latest contribution to the saga has Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, Little Brian, when a threat forces him to confront the sins of his past in order to save the ones he loves most.
F9 shared its opening day with Madman Films’ local documentary Valerie Taylor: Playing With Sharks, which took in $39,403 from 64 screens, or $73,474 with previews.

New releases Dream Horse and Spirit Untamed failed to make a major dent in the box office over the weekend, with audiences continuing to flock to The Conjuring 3, A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella.
In Melbourne, cinemagoers were treated to all the aforementioned titles for the first time, with results suggesting some pent up demand. Cinemas reopened on Friday following more than two weeks of lockdown, albeit under restriction – theatres can only reopen up to 25 per cent of capacity, or 50 people per venue.
Dream Horse, starring Toni Collette and Damian Lewis, follows the true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely racehorse bred by small-town bartender Jan Vokes. The drama bowed on a reasonable $684,875 for Sony (Thursday-Sunday) from 301 screens, and with previews is on $771,581.
Close behind was Dreamworks/Universal’s animated feature Spirit Untamed, the second film in the franchise, which amassed a respectable $663,711 from 234, taking it to $1.3 million with previews.

On the surface, it might appear that little changed with home viewing this weekend. At least as far as can be told with “In the Heights” (Warner Bros.) on HBO Max. Even with theaters of great interest, unlike its disappointing gross, results at home remain a mystery.
But a second glance reveals a few nuggets of note. A handful of new releases arrived, including “Queen Bees” (Gravitas Ventures) on Premium VOD, which also placed in the theatrical box-office top 10.
Meanwhile, some positions suggest how different pricing strategies may have an impact on results, including possible consumer resistance to prices higher than normal. That might be the case with “Mortal Kombat” (Warner Bros.).
“Wrath of Man” (United Artists/$19.99) edged out “Nobody” (Universal/$19.99) as the top performer. Both had two #1 placements across the charts. But “Wrath” did slightly better, taking two #2 positions, while “Nobody” was #3 on two charts. (See the rankings below.

“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” which opened in theaters along with HBO Max, bested the second weekend of theatrical exclusive “A Quiet Place Part II.” There’s positive signs in the results for both films as well as the #3 title, “Cruella,” but signs are mixed in the broader picture.
Theaters in the U.S./Canada (the latter still mostly shut down) took in around $69 million this weekend, a sum that represents 42 percent of the gross for the first June weekend of 2019. Similarly, Memorial Day weekend 2021 represented 45 percent the same period in 2019. Theaters have every reason to expect further improvement, and no one expects short-term parity, but viability will require hockey-stick growth.
This “Conjuring” is the eighth film in an eight-year-old franchise that includes three “Annabelle” titles, “The Nun,” and “The Curse of La Llorona.” It opened with parallel streaming, and faced off another major title in a similar genre.

Paramount’s thriller sequel opened on Thursday 3.
Thriller sequel A Quiet Place Part II will look to replicate its success in international markets when it opens in 563 UK cinemas this weekend.
The film took $48.4m (£34.3m) across its opening three-day weekend in North America. This represented the best debut in the territory since the pandemic began; and, given social distancing measures, compares well with the $50.2m three-day opening of the first film in April 2018, which went on to gross $188m (£133.1m) across the US and Canada.

Warner Bros.’ chiller “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” topped the box office with £2,708,455 in its opening week as the U.K. basked in late May sunshine and a long bank holiday weekend.
The good weather that traditionally keeps audiences outdoors did not appear to have a detrimental effect on the box office, with Sony’s family-friendly “Peter Rabbit 2” scoring £2,045,999 in its second week in second place, according to numbers released by Comscore.
However, if going purely by weekend numbers, “Peter Rabbit 2” collected £2 million, a shade over the £1.9 million taken by “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.”
“Peter Rabbit 2” has now collected more than £7,484,061 in the U.K. Upcoming key market releases for the film include China (June 11), Japan (June 25), France (June 30), Germany (July 1), Italy (July 1), Spain (July 16) and Brazil (August 26).
Disney’s “Cruella” opened simultaneously on streamer Disney Plus and in cinemas and collected £1,453,635 in third place.

Those who placed bets on John Krasinski as the savior of movie theaters, collect your winnings. While you’re at it, tip your hat to Paramount. “A Quiet Place Part II,” similar to its predecessor directed by and starring Krasinski, finally was released more than 14 months after its original date. One of the earliest titles to be jettisoned after the onset of Covid-19, it was ultimately placed this weekend after Universal vacated “F9” for June 25.

“Dream Horse” is exactly what you expect from a movie called “Dream Horse.” It’s light, sweetly frisky, and warmly inspiring, with a lead performance from Toni Colette keeping things on track.

Photo: 'Dream Horse'/Bleecker Street The Story of Dream Alliance? I’ve always been a sucker for feel-good animal films. From ‘Seabiscuit’ and ‘Secretariat’ to just about any tear-jerking movie about dogs, I am almost always bound to be a fan of a film where an animal is the main attraction. This is partially why I was so excited to hit the theaters and watch one of this weekend's new releases ’Dream Horse’ directed by Euros Lyn starring Emmy Award-Winning and Oscar-nominated actress Toni Collette and Damian Lewis. This film tells the heartening true story of Dream Alliance, the unlikely racehorse who goes on to race and ultimately win the Welsh Grand National after a significant amount of trials and tribulations. Collette portrays Jan Vokes, a woman going through her monotonous everyday routine working at a grocery store during the day and bartending at night at the local pub.

The end is near.
No, not of theaters. The end of minuscule grosses and reports laying out numbers in which the total for all films is less (by far) of what the number-one film alone normally would gross in late May.
It was, with no new studio wide openings (with a unique asterisk), the lowest turnout at theaters since March after getting as high as $58 million. This weekend will come in around $21 million ($17 million of that in the top 10). The results for the equivalent three days in 2019? $181 million.
Next weekend with “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount) and “Cruella” (Disney) opening, the three-day figure could approach that number from those two alone. And there’s another reason to put aside the current results as a last gasp of the worst of the pandemic.

The domestic box office was quiet this weekend as theaters await a critical Memorial Day weekend that will set the tone for the first summer blockbuster season since the pandemic. With no new films in the top 5, Lionsgate’s “Spiral” will take No. 1 again with $4.5 million from 2,991 theaters, giving it a 10-day total of $15.8 million.
MGM/UA’s “Wrath of Man” is in second with $2.9 million and an $18.8 million total after three weekends. Warner Bros.’ “Those Who Wish Me Dead” continues to struggle with $1.8 million in its second weekend and a 10-day total of just $5.5 million.

The domestic box office isn’t going to get interesting until next weekend when Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II and Disney’s Cruella launch the summer season. From that point on, we largely won’t have any weekends where the major studios are taking a break from releasing wide entries, which is the case this weekend as Lionsgate’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw repeats in its second frame with $1.38M yesterday, -63%, and an expected 3-day of $4.7M, -46% (actually a pretty good hold for a horror film which typically drops -60% or greater) and a running total of $15.9M. Spiral is booked at 2,997 theaters (+186). All the action is overseas where Universal’s F9 is heading to $160M this weekend in 8 markets, charged by China where it’s set to become the second biggest opener for the studio and the Fast franchise, already counting $105M. F9 parks itself at U.

The 2015 Sundance-winning documentary “Dark Horse” was such an obvious candidate for an inspirational biopic that the question wasn’t whether it would be remade, but how well. Euros Lyn’s heartwarming “Dream Horse” doesn’t rewrite the genre, but it’s feel-good filmmaking of the sort many may be inclined to seek out at the moment. Although overly familiar and openly sentimental, it’s also an easy watch that’s gently appealing.
There were two breakout stars in Louise Osmond’s documentary: Jan Vokes and her racehorse, Dream Alliance. For the dramatization, Dream is played by seven horses while Jan is played by Toni Collette, so most of the movie’s focus stays on her. But that’s Ok, because Collette is charming as an initially-wan resident of Cefn Fforest, a former mining town in South Wales.

about a lovable group of working-class stiffs and red-faced retirees in a former South Wales mining village who find new reason to get out of bed in the morning when they pool their resources and invest in breeding a thoroughbred, Euros Lyn’s “Dream Horse” is more than a little hackneyed for something based on such an amazing true story. And yet, the Rocky-like theatrics that dominate the home stretch — already familiar to anyone who remembers Louise Osmond’s equally winsome 2015 documentary on the subject, “Dark Horse” — are perhaps the least compelling aspect of a light matinee that can fray around the edges as it strains to thread the needle between “The Full Monty” and “Seabiscuit.” On the contrary, “Dream Horse” hits its stride off the track, where the paint-by-numbers drama of winning and losing takes a backseat to a more nuanced tale about the need to get back in the race.

Bleecker Street has acquired U.S. rights to Fran Kranz’ Mass, which made its world premiere at Sundance back in January. A fourth quarter theatrical release is currently planned.
Years after an unspeakable tragedy tore their lives apart, two sets of parents agree to talk privately in an attempt to move forward. In Fran Kranz’ writing and directing debut, he thoughtfully examines their journey of grief, anger and acceptance by coming face-to-face with the ones who have been left behind.
Kranz also wrote and produced Mass with other producers being Casey Wilder Mott, Jp Ouellette and Dylan Matlock. The deal was brokered between Kent Sanderson and Avy Eschenasy of Bleecker Street with CAA and The Gersh Agency on behalf of the filmmakers.
Bleecker currently has the Sundance title Together Together starring Ed Helms and Patti Harrison in theaters. Earlier this year,...

Warner Bros has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming feel-good story ‘Dream Horse’ featuring Toni Collette with a Welsh accent.
The story follows Jan Vokes, a cleaner and bartender, who recruits her initially reluctant husband Brian and local accountant Howard Davies to help her bring together a syndicate of local people to breed a foal – which they name Dream Alliance. On the racetrack, he proves himself to be more than a match for the multi-million-pound racehorses he comes up against – a true working-class champion, taking on the establishment at their own game. But much more than this, Dream begins to alter the lives of everyone in the syndicate, not least Jan’s. He is everything to her: friend, confidant and an escape from a life of always putting other people’s needs first.
Directed by Euros Lyn the film also stars Damian Lewis, Owen Teale, Joanna Page, Karl Johnson,...

Bleecker Street has acquired U.S. rights to Maria Schrader’s “I’m Your Man,” which won the Berlinale’s Silver Bear for leading performance for Maren Eggert. The film, which also stars Dan Stevens, will be released in theaters later this year with a VOD release to follow.
In the film, Eggert plays Alma, a scientist coerced into participating in an extraordinary study in order to obtain research funds for her work. For three weeks, she has to live with a humanoid robot tailored to her character and needs, whose artificial intelligence is designed to be the perfect life partner for her. Enter Tom (Stevens), a machine in human form in a class of its own, created solely to make her happy.
“Maria has created such a funny and touching story of love and connection that one questions what it means to be human,” said Andrew Karpen, CEO of Bleecker Street.
