Beowulf (1999)

There are better ways to waste your time...
9 December 2004
This film is not at all what I had expected.

What I thought I was getting was a historical film in the style of what I have seen of Das Niebelungenlied, only then of course with the Beowulf story.

What I got was a futuristic techno-film which was also, very unfortunately, extremely boring and stupid: The music was annoying, increasingly so as the film dragged on. There was not even a beginning of any depth in the story. And the parts that were supposed to be sexy just weren't.

All in all a cardboard box is considerably more entertaining.

Does not do it for me !
16 August 2003
This film is not as bad as people say it is. However, it is certainly not good either!

The acting somehow seemed on a much lesser plan than any given episode. And that is a great pity! It's a bit like early Seinfeld episodes, where the actors haven't yet completely found their way to their character. It's a process. Only here it is the other way around. The actors seem to have lost touch with their characters a bit through the passage of time.

Of course, the fact that cohesion of the story is so low does nothing towards remedying that. And I was not charmed by how the story was introduced: they just happened to be going to a wedding, really accidentally still all together on the Enterprise for the last time, when they have to make a detour, and that detour is our story. Contrived and neither very inventive nor inspired, rather more insipid!

Personally, I would very much like the next Star Trek movie to be based upon the Voyager-series. The final double-episode was already more than I had hoped for and I just know that it could be the very best ever made!

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Simply Sublime !
15 August 2003
If you look at the story in an emotionless way then it is 'La Dame aux Camélias' meets contemporary music in an abundantly colourful background.

Only I can't look at it emotionlessly. It is just too spectacularly wonderful!

For me, this film lets euphoria take possession of me! It flows all through me and I feel sadness and bliss at the same time as it has me both smiling and crying ecstatically. It makes me yearn for "La grande passion" and, at the same time, feel that passion through Satine and Christian.

This is perfection!

Absolutely Fabulous!!!!
14 November 2002
Great and memorable characters, good stories, t.v. at its best! Comedy, romance, adventure, struggle, violence, love. It has everything and more, for it has Janeway!!! I'm only sorry it didn't last longer. And the final episode only made me want more!!!!

It might have been funny...
14 May 2002
I gave this a five out of ten, a no pass, because of what it could have been. All this talent, all this money and all these resources available and what do we get: utter mediocrity! The jokes were just barely funny. The storyline is messy. The romance is completely underdeveloped. In fact the whole movie is underdeveloped. As if it was made on weekends after everybody's daytime job was over. For a real romantic comedy watch "Notting Hill" or "The Sure thing" or "Bridget Jones' Diary" or "You've got mail" or "While you were sleeping".

Ridiculous drivel
25 April 2002
I read the plot and it sounded good. What I saw, though, was ridiculous drivel. The visualization of the whole "hacking-thing" was puerile. Bits of the story were initiated but never followed up on. Actually, the entire film is an insult to one's intelligence. And if I ever saw non-functional nudity it is Ms. Berry's breasts, nice though they are. I rate it two out of five.

nice, but no more than that.
11 April 2002
It's a nice movie, but that's it. It's been done and better at that. At some places attempts at jokes seem to be made, but they don't come off. The female part was embarrassing in it's minimal consequence (to the movie). If anything, that's my biggest critique. Kudos to Ms. Bassett for making what she made of it! That said, it's a diverting movie.

Are you going to sing Feelings for me?
12 February 2002
This film consists of several different stories that are very loosely connected to each other. I was drawn into each individual story but would have liked to have known more about them. What would have made this film really good in my opinion is if there had been a single strong story line woven through all the stories; an interconnection that would have kept the coincidence intact, but would have made it an unseparable whole. That is what I missed. I am very happy though that at the end there was a kind of closing to each of the stories, but that really deserved more time. So a good film, with interesting characters and good portrayals, but it lacked the depth and interconnection that it made me both expect and hope to find.

Just because a film has a message doesn't make it a good film!
6 October 2001
Apart from the fact that I nearly lost my dinner watching this garbage, I really don't think that the mere fact of a film having a message makes it a good film. If you try to warn someone about something you have to make them see the relevance to their own situation. However, the characters in this film are so far removed from most people's everyday life, that I fail to see how this can convey its message to anyone. It's dreary, dismal and revolting, which no doubt is what was intended, but it holds NO appeal to me!

Yentl (1983)
Wonderful!
6 October 2001
A great feat of achievement by Ms. Streisand. This film is warm and funny, with beautiful music that underlines the film extremely well. It left me with a feeling of hope, expectation and thoughtful joy as I watched Yentl fly. I loved it!

Hahahahahahaha!!!!
5 October 2001
This movie started out just like another dismal Tarantino movie. Here I am thoroughly prepared for depression until: The Volta! I am laughing man, LOL, and not WITH the film, no AT the film, just straight at it, it was so stupid!!! Why, oh why did Tarantino do it? Did he run out of ideas for the original film and just went along making another one? Or did he think he was making some kind of filmish "Bohemian Rhapsody"? Or could it be that he actually thought that, yeah man, this is it, this works?! For me, this must be one of the most imbecilic movies I've ever seen!

12 Monkeys (1995)
Really great!
4 October 2001
All I can say is I truly recommend this film. I loved it, it made me think about it (and about the possibility of the time-confusion-thing) and it was very funny at times. My favourite moment is when all those quack-scientists crowd round Bruce Willis in his bed praising him. Just sooo funny!!! One thing though, Brad Pitt's interpretation of how to play his madman-role seemed extremely similar to the "I'm-an-american-citizen-journalist-who's-been everywhere"-guy who appears towards the end in "Apocalypse Now". It seemed really rather copied to me.

romantic comedy...shouldn't both elements be present, then?
25 September 2001
I like the genre of romantic comedy, but for a film to classify as such there must be two elements present: romance and comedy. In my opinion there was neither. It didn't make me laugh and I didn't feel any romance or sensuality. I couldn't care less about the characters and the ending was totally predictable. I fastforwarded the last bit, just to get through. I certainly did not feel these two were made for each other, in fact I would give it 6 months. The most interesting thing about this film was the thirty seconds of Pachobel's canon in D!

violent, lose-your-breakfast why-did-they-make-it type of film
10 November 2000
I had heard hardly anything about this film, when I won a ticket to go and see it in an early morning pre-premiere. I was treated to a film that to me was entirely sickening, for a few reasons, firstly because of its explicit imagery of violence and of its linking sex and extreme violence against women and also of its playing down the seriousness of the violence by focusing on both aestheticism and on the "good child that cannot help what has happenend to him and is therefore no longer responsible for what he has done as a bad man".

This may not be what the film intended to say, but it is what it said to me. And that I find entirely unpalatable!

Holy Smoke (1999)
still pondering its meaning............
22 November 1999
When I went to see this film at the cinema, I, one, had no idea what it was about and, two, was seeing it as the third film in a long night of cinematic experiences. Therefore, by the time it started, it being four o'clock in the morning, I was hitting a middle of the night low, that no amount of coffee or maximum-caf cappucino could elevate.

This film, however, had me right back on the edge of my seat, it was so fascinating. Ms Winslet marvelously plays a young woman, who thinks to have found fulfillment and truth in her life with a sect in India, hoping that she may be so lucky that she might become wife to sect-leader Baba, who's "marrying everybody", transferring his transcendental love on all.

Her family, however, think otherwise and feel she has been ensnared by some weird cult. They devise a plot to get her back to Australia; they tell her her father has had a stroke and is dying. She goes, but because her mother falls ill and needs to be accompanied home.

Her family has hired Mr Keitel who is going to break her bond with India, the cult and Baba. The two of them go to a cabin somewhere in the desert where he will take everything she believes in away from her, break her spirit and then build her up again.

Things take their turn and it's fascinating to watch what happens to whom and how; who "wins" and what that means, if anything. At a certain point you start to feel it's going over the top, but is it???

I am still thinking about those things and about what Ms Campion means by it. But I guess those are the best ones, that make you think............

there is nothing here that is not excellence
19 October 1999
I have seen this film many, many times, and still it is as much sparkling fun as it was the first time I saw it. Each and every time I find myself rolling over the floor with laughter. There is nothing here that is not excellence. Whenever I feel down, this film will always make it better. If you haven't seen it, I have only one advice: make sure you do see it. If you think this sounds incoherently superlative, you are right, but that is how it makes me feel.

....very thankful for having fallen asleep halfway through!
18 October 1999
I know, I am not a Mel Brooks fan, but I was willing to give this film the benefit of the doubt, thinking that a persiflage on "Robin Hood:Prince of thieves" had possibilities. The possibilities were not turned into funny jokes. As a matter of fact, they were not turned into any kind of joke at all. I'm just very glad I didn't go see it in any cinema and very thankful for having fallen asleep halfway through!

brilliant combination of the past and the present
3 March 1999
The combination of adherence to the original text, and placement in a contemporary setting, shows us that feelings, and therefore people, four hundred years ago are much the same as they are today. Verona becomes Verona Beach and two ages merge seamlessly together. It shows you how near such distance can be. The characters are totally believable as we witness their love and their hate.
