Sea Patrol (2007)
Mostly awful, frankly, but with a couple of redeeming features
If they'd worried less about trying to cram a couple of hours' worth of storyline into 43 minutes, but without the necessary money or talent in the effects department, it would have been vastly improved.
In the same vein as ER, in that it concentrates on a small group of people working together in a fairly confined space, unfortunately it reaches neither the excitement nor personal interest levels achieved at County General.
There were a few redeeming moments (at least in Seasons 1 and 2 - I have yet to see Season 3).
You can at least believe that some of the cast could actually handle life on an Australian warship - notably David Lyons (ET), Jeremy Lindsey Taylor (Buffer) and Matthew Holmes (Swain), but I'm afraid the rest of them may have looked more at home in an office, or on the sales floor at a department store.
From a very shallow point of view, at least David Lyons provided some much needed eye candy, plus a clear indication of the fine actor he was in fact becoming.
On the whole, though, this series really isn't worth investing much time in.
Mr. Forbush and the Penguins (1971)
Carry on Up the Antarctic!
This film is thought-provoking yet remarkably sweet and funny. The first half is like a Carry On film, then, once deposited in the Antarctic, John Hurt goes from womanizing man-about-town, to eccentric, slowly-unravelling biologist very convincingly. Some remarkable wildlife photography and the baby penguins give the 2nd half of the film great 'Aah' potential. Given that I only saw this on DVD because a friend is mad about penguins, it was a great surprise! If it doesn't make you want to rush off to the South Pole, I'll be very surprised!
Insomnia (2002)
Insomnia? I couldn't keep my eyes open!
The scenery was great. The idea of it never getting dark was weird. But that was about it. I think they must have sacked the make-up artist early in the proceedings as dear old Al never even started to look tired. He may have been hallucinating but where were the bags under the eyes? And the plot was so predictable I could have left after half an hour and still known what happened at the end. Robin Williams was pretty credible as a bad guy though. Can't believe this was made by the same guy as Memento. No comparison. Waste of two hours.
