Hackers (1995)

Trash

This film is not only lacking realism. It doesn't come up with either storyline or acceptable dialogues and is an insult to everyone who has a bare understanding of computer fundamentals.

Luckily, over the last years, Hollywood has made the right decision to bring a little more realism into computer-related movies. However, this film is not worth seeing, I would recommend everyone to spend the runtime with anything else - perhaps cooking.

The Dig (1995 Video Game)
10/10
Perfect atmosphere and an epic adventure game
25 April 2002
Warning: Spoilers
(might include some spoilers - read only if you have played the game already)

The Dig is an exceptional adventure I have never before and never after encountered again. I remember buying it at our local dealer for about 30 usd when it was new and I was happy having got the original version with the English speech.

From the very beginning you're caught in an amazingly detailed and epic adventure. As the plot develops, you learn more about each of the three main characters while the music supports every single scene perfectly. What starts off as a simple NASA mission to save the world turns out to be the most exciting challenge I have been confronted with in an adventure game.

The dialogues are unprecedented and unachieved in any other adventure game I have played and while the game lacks the kind of humour you are used to from Indiana Jones or Monkey Island but involves you more deeply into the quest that Maggie, Boston and Ludger are up to.

In my opinion, everyone who has played the game and enjoyed it like me should read the novel by Alan Dean Foster. It comes up with new perspectives on the characters, showing them closer than you have got to know them in the game. Additionally, the book provides you with a slightly different plot that starts off very slowly but you can hardly take a rest for eating or sleeping because it's so well written. How Foster deals with the Cocytan presences is surprising at first, then traps you even in more in the story.

Summary: Everyone who likes thoroughly designed adventure games with a brilliant atmosphere should play this game and then read the novel.

The 6th Day (2000)
6/10
solid action movie
31 January 2002
Warning: Spoilers
The 6th day is with Arnold Schwarzenegger who is one of the last remaining true action heros from the 1980s and early 1990s when action films consisted of cool and sharp guys who had to do a bad job, save the world, kiss a girl and leave some silly quotes wherever they break the neck of someone evil.

I consider this film a solid action film in which I especially liked the way of paying the taxi fare. Despite all the risks arising from a national or even international fingerprint database, I'd very much appreciate such a simple way of paying.

*SLIGHT SPOILER AHEAD* The film's about cloning and its possible consequences. To make it short, there are some very enjoyable moments and there are no incoherencies I found but the helicopter mirror thing scene seemed a little off the way (if this is expressed correctly for: not suiting in the rest).

Cube (1997)
8/10
Enjoyable, twisting suspense
31 January 2002
I wasn't so fond of scary movies when I watched Cube but as it was recommended to me by a friend who runs a movie club at our university I thought I might give it a try.

What excited me most about this movie was the characters and their evolution which actually should not be surprising since you should be able to figure it from a) high rating and b) small cast. This film is enjoyable because it doesn't come up with distracting effects and meanwhile starts to pull you into the cube trying to figure the system for yourself.

All in all, I had fun watching this movie until the end which was a little strange and didn't fit into my ideas.

Titan A.E. (2000)

Quite a nice tale
31 January 2002
Until the day I watched this movie, I had heard a lot about it and the name was kind of present in my head. I then finally took the chance and watched it - surprise: it's a cartoon!

I was surprised with this finding but anyway, this film makes up a solid, enjoyable family film with something for kids and something for adults. The characters are ok, the story is quite predictable at times and some parts of the scenery are awesome. All in all, Titan A.E. has made it to one of my favourite animated films.

So honestly true.
14 May 2000
I've seen a few movies only that moved me like "In Love And War". Probably due to my own life, I enjoyed this film as a moment of understanding - the young Ernest Hemingway who has hopelessly fallen in love with his nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky. Both actors (O' Donnell and Bullock) have proved their ability to do a great emotional show. Everything seems so true, so honest, so real. Anyone who has ever been desperately in love, doing things he/she shouldn't have done and takings risks that are obviously not worth taking them - those people do understand the meaning of love. And this movie shows love in war. And everything gets even more difficult for these two lovers who do not know how much surprises life will offer them...
