Abril Despedaçado (2001)
Behind the Brazil's sun
Behind the Sun describes conflict between two families seen by boy called Pacu(awesome Ravi Lacerda). Sooner or later, each masculine family's member gets involved into conflict. Salles shows how irrational habits destroys human feelings. Pacu's father and his counterpart in 2nd family don't regret victims. Death of their sons is treated as custom which should be cultivated. Pacu dreams about normal life. Although he is a child, he doesn't want to take part in bloodthirsty, endless series of killings and revenges. Accidental encounter with circus - girl Clara changes his life. The book given by Clara shows him beauty of the world. Boy discovers that fate can be changed and depends of our will. Since then, he tries to persuade his older brother Tonho to leave the hell prepared by his own father and opponents waiting to kill him. Love born between Clara and Tonho changes his point of view. He realizes that normal world is not out of reach and can be reached easily....Walter Salles made an attempt to create masterpiece. Topics like sacrifice, endless duel, lost of dignity are appropriate factors to succeed. Message is clear. Sick pride removes spirit from our body. We give up ability to sympathy and love. Fake faith in God justifies mortal sins. When we discover what we did, it's to late to change the past. We loose everything essential and our shame cannot be erased.
Kôkaku kidôtai (1995)
Border between human and cyborg
Very interesting movie but its main mistake is....fast action(sic!). The most important dialogs are spoken too fast and it's a big likelihood that at first time you won't be able to catch point of some dialogs(some scenes should be viewed several times). However, huge number of philosophical scenes(mainly with Mjr Motoko Kusanagi who often considers her humanity)is an important and stunning part of the movie(showing major's self-consciousness and gripping, animated, futuristic Japan). They are amplified by music which stimulate our imagination and is a great supplement to movie. Mayor(resembles girl from Blade Runner)is not only a cyborg but also developed form of live which desire to connect with Puppet Master. Although he has never been in touch with him, she instinctively feels this need. Puppet Master(originally Project 2501) is precursor of new revolution(created by man demands to be treated like a human, not like something controlled which is sentenced to being damaged). I have to admit that movie forced me to thinking. If we look at the human progress in movie, we will realize that we loose our humanity and self-conscious(memories, feelings can be removed or added without any problems, borderline between AI and human between true and false can no longer exist). What is more, AI is more powerful and might supersede humans. As I mentioned before the only disadvantage are prompt turning points. That's why my rate is 9.
Babel (2006)
Innaritu accuses modern society
A few weeks ago, I went to cinema with a big headache. During 21 Grams premiere a lot of critics accused Innaritu and Arriaga of copying their former ideas. To be honest, the movie had been smashed a long time before premiere.
Fortunately they have committed a mistake!According to me, this movie is much more better that others Oscar's candidates. Innaritu is one of the obscure directors who directly hits a conscious of the Earth residents. He describes problems omitted by other artists. American young couple is a typical modern couple with lack of communication skills - they don't know how to talk, only way of communication is quarrel. They seems to be closer, when tragedy encounters them. Director skilfully captures 2nd heroes of this part - American tourists showing their ruthless behavior and omnipresent rudeness. Next teasing issue is our lost in modern times. Chinko suffering from her mother's death, can't rely on father's support. Illnes and peers pressure damage her definition of love and narrow down it into occasional sexual contact. Her outrageous behavior is a method of searching warmth she can't receive. Fortunately, she founds person who is able to change her point of view and prevent her form sharing her mother's fate. Rest stories can be treat as different category. Innaritu show how quickly and pointlessly we can loose important things. The things for whose we have been working all life. From small, innocent events are born tragedies having tragical effects on our life. Small incident may ruin whole life.
The rope connecting America, Asia and Africa, backs up our throats...Babel is a movie rejected by many viewers whose problems are described brutally by director. They are said to be invented artificially. I suggest them to glimpse at their life carefully. Then they will be able to spot anonymous Tokyo, Marrocan and American desert without man on horizon.
Stalag 17 (1953)
Interesting and funny portrait of German stalag
Stalag 17 is a rare example of fictional war movie which balances between serious drama and black comedy. Although German soldiers seem to be nice guys , they don't hesitate to shoot fugitives. What is the greatest in Wilder's movie? Firstly, riddle. Who is the traitor? Who collaborates with Germany? Wilder gives us many fake clues: amazing Sefton's storage cannot be deliberate, what is the role of handicapped Joey(always ignored but in one great scene he watches mysteriously lynch on Sefton) etc. Secondly, characters. Sig Ruman(corny Sgt. Schulz)always indicates his love to funny Americans and spending time with them gives him a genuine pleasure. Sig Ruman gives us top performance and his dialogs with Shapiro and Animals are one of the funniest moments of whole cinematography. William Holden(Sefton) creates exemplary appeal to opponents:if you want to survive you must learn how to cope with opponents and have rational attitude to your neighbors and war. And last but not the least, Otto Preminger's appearance in film(Col. Von Scherbach)is a blink to audience and critics. Austro-Hungarian Jew as a colonel of German army-it could have done only Wilder!English used by Von Scherbach and Ruman fills us with high spirits. Human portraits of soldiers(especially Animal and H.Shapiro) helps viewers to socialize with them. Stalag 17 is one of the greatest war-camp movie ever.
