Standout Performances Here
9 December 2023
This movie was a slow burn for me, but when things started happening it got more and more intriguing.

I must say that Julia Roberts and Myha'la Herrold deliver standout performances. Really, really good. They played off of each other quite well.

Ethan Hawke was good but his character just faded into the background, in my opinion. Mahershala Ali was also good but his performance seemed restrained and you keep waiting and waiting for him to finally fess-up and spill the beans about what was probably going on.

But for a movie that is well over the 2 hour mark, the ending just didn't deliver and provide any closure. It was familiar because it's been done before - several times.

Pointless and mundane
16 September 2023
The only reason why I watched the entire movie was to see if the ending would tie up loose ends or somehow explain the inexplicable....but nope!

What was it trying to be? At first I thought it was going for a 'Truman Show' type story, which it kind-of-sort-of had elements from that movie, but it turned out to be an acid trip near the end. Why not present us the mystery and then solve it for us at the end?

Instead what we get is this mundane, pointless, head-scratcher. And if they were there so long, why didn't the couple's hair grow longer?? It remained exactly the same length and style throughout the entire damn movie! What is going on?!!

Wow!

Holy moley this movie came out of nowhere and really packs a punch - or even a few bodies blown to bits. If you liked Kill Bill and John Wick, this is your kind of movie. There is never a dull moment and some scenes will have you cheering, while others will have you wincing. Great movie, though. A lot of fun.

SO GOOD!
25 January 2023
I went into this movie with no expectations and it was surprisingly good. The mechanical M3GAN was creepy and fascinating to watch. There were a few times I caught myself screaming at the TV encouraging the characters to punch her in the face or slam a heavy object over her head. LOL! And the scene that takes place in the forest - holy crap it is spine chilling and just wild - has one of the best lines delivered by M3EGAN. The movie doesn't take itself seriously and is actually a dark comedy with some intentionally hilarious scenes. The actors are good (except for the boss named David - in my opinion). The story moves along and is never boring. I will definitely watch it again.

Implausible But Engaging
20 January 2023
Even with the 100% implausible plot and situations, it actually held my attention until the very end. There are scenes that are nicely done and the suspense is through the roof. There are other scenes that you simply have to suspend all disbelief and just be entertained. The final battle between the heroine and the maniac coroner ends in a very well done makeup effect that is both gruesome and also a lesson in anatomy. Although I wasn't familiar with the lead actress, she did well in the role. Most will recognize the evil coroner, Jerry O'Connell, from television and other movies. His deadpan delivery and reserved portrayal was effective.

Warning: extreme anxiety ahead!
3 September 2022
So I have this fear of falling - can't even stand close to the edge of a balcony - so naturally I choose to watch a movie called (ironically) Fall.

Well let me tell ya, my palms were drenched with sweat throughout the entire movie. The dizzying special effects were THAT good. I had to look away a few times because the anxiety was just too much.

Now for the movie itself. I thought it was well done. Some of the dialogue and "drama" were eye-roll worthy. The impending doom was purposely obvious, but there was an unexpected twist revealed at 2,000 feet that was pretty cool. Check this one out. I've watched it a few times now.

Boring & Pointless

Warning: Spoilers
Wow - what a letdown! So let me get this straight. The alien is a territorial flying Roomba that plays hide-and-seek in the clouds and then it appears as flying drapes?? Ay yi yi. This movie was painful to sit through and made absolutely no sense. How do you go from the amazing 'Get Out', to the stupid 'Us', to this pointless snoozer?? I would have walked out, but I watched it at home!

Enjoyable Tale
7 August 2022
This installment of the Predator series was better than I thought it would be. With enjoyable characters and some intense action sequences, the film held my attention and was surprisingly good. One missed opportunity, however. When the lead female character gets into a situation that results in her being covered in mud, why wouldn't they have used that situation to show that it then made you undetectable to the Predator, like it made Arnold Schwarzenegger undetectable in the original film? Instead this movie uses an alternate method, but it would have been cool if they had used both.

The magnitude of the rescue efforts were mind blowing. And when you think of how many things that could have gone wrong - OMG. This is a fantastic movie that will fill you with anxiety and make you feel like you're right there with the heroic rescuers.

Scared Me As A Child - Great Film

All these years later I remember the escape using the barrels. It scared me so bad as a child. I still watch this movie at least once a year. Love this film!

Wow - FINALLY a movie worth watching. Non-stop action, witty dialogue, and an excellent cast. This should receive Oscar nods for film editing and sound. Loved it!

Why this was a bad movie...
10 July 2022
I guess I care more about a plot (it was all over the place so basically there wasn't one), the original Jurassic Park magic (zero here just a show and tell of beasts and the exact same escape situations you've seen 100 times before), the acting (the little girl was HORRIBLE, Chris Pratt was wooden and seemed irritated that the other actors were in the movie, Laura Dern thought she was in a fashion show instead of a movie, Jeff Goldblum was just plain weird and must have gone off script so the film editor hacked up his dialogue). All of those in a movie are distracting and not enjoyable.

The only good things were Sam Neill at 74 looked AMAZING and I loved this black lady who was a pilot (yet she only had about 8-minutes of screen time).

Also, I absolutely hate it when a movie preaches to me and then ends the movie with what they THINK is an original, profound statement that you've seen and heard a 1,000,000 times before which was - "we can all get along and live in harmony no matter how different we are". Yawn.

FAILS TO IGNITE
14 May 2022
Are there just no talented screenwriters in Hollywood anymore? I mean come on - the book is already written! This is a terrible adaptation of the Stephen King novel, and I can just picture Mr. King sitting in a screening of this mess of a movie throwing his hands up in the air and cursing. If I hadn't read the book and went to see this movie, I would have been asking everyone, "What the hell's going on?" No character development. No story set up. No meaningful scenes. No meaningful dialogue. Even the casting is dreadful. And it's evident that John Carpenter probably wrote the music to the movie because it sounds like it's from the 80's and sounds almost exactly like the music from his blockbusters 'Halloween' and 'The Thing'. Well this movie will by no means be a blockbuster. I bet it ends up on 2022's Top 10 Worst Movies list.

Lame.
26 April 2022
No idea why the talented Jake Gyllenhaal would want to be in this mess of a movie. Cardboard cutout characters who utter painfully stupid dialogue in an underdeveloped plot. Its attempt to pay homage to paramedics, police officers, and surgeons is obvious and eye roll worthy. The most laughable scene is an operation being performed in the back of the ambulance while FaceTiming with a surgeon who is on a golf course and he's walking them through it. No wait - maybe its the paramedic using her hair clip to clamp a squirting artery. Not kidding. It's THAT bad!

REALLY REALLY BAD
30 March 2022
Uhhgh! I couldn't wait to see this movie, but turns out I couldn't wait for it to end. Oddly most of the actors have expressions on their faces like they are suffering from a really bad migraine. Maybe they knew the movie they were making was painfully bad? And Halle Berry...oh lort. She's had so many Botox injections that her face literally does not move. Expressionless. She tries to cry - nope. Face won't work! The dialogue is cringe worthy and most of the scenes make no sense. They did hit the diversity quota with the casting, however. Even that is laughably obvious! Oh, and when you can tell you are looking at a movie set in a scene...whelp... you know it's gonna be a bad movie. Seriously ya'll. Don't waste your time or money on this one. Buy yourself a gallon of gas instead. At least it has some redeeming value.

GOOD BUT VIOLENT
27 February 2022
Not the greatest thriller ever, but it kept our interest and had a nice twist. The only negative was that it was so gosh dern violent. And it was surprising that the movie portrayed the use of an illegal drug to get out of a 'painful situation'. Drugs should never be glorified in a movie - ever.

BORING
31 December 2021
I was so bored watching this movie. I literally stopped it twice and went back to it until it was finally over. YAWN. And the ending. Whahh??

The description that the sex in the movie was "severe" is an overstatement. Good lort. Reading the comments made it sound like an X-rated movie! It was your typical R-rated movie, however.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Seeing is believing

Warning: Spoilers
I grew up in Kentucky and every year during tornado season we were subjected to weather alerts advising us of tornado watches and of course the dreaded tornado warnings. As kids we would occasionally peek out our living room windows anxiously looking for funnel clouds and at times actually descend into our basement crouching in a corner next to our furnace waiting for disaster to hit from above. This happened time and time again, but we never saw a funnel cloud nor experienced the terrifying monster that we nervously awaited. As we grew older, each weather alert became less and less impactful because nothing ever resulted from it. We had grown numb and dismissive. This movie reminded me of that chapter of my life.

The movie opens with a Michigan State PhD candidate (Jennifer Lawrence) discovering a comet while surveying the nighttime sky by an observatory telescope. An astronomy professor (Leonardo Dicaprio) calculates its orbit only to discover that it has a 100% chance of impacting Earth at an extinction level event (ELE) in only 6 months/14 days. From there, the movie has us witness how such a serious discovery is believed, communicated, and handled.

The President of the United States (Meryl Streep), annoyed by the timing of the news of the planet-killing comet, decides the best solution is to sit tight and assess. Popular daytime talk show hosts Jack & Brie (Tyler Perry & Cate Blanchett) have the astronomy pair on to discuss their revelation, but instead of finding the story terrifying and unsettling, the bubbly hosts find the news exciting and pompously reject the threat to humanity. The CEO of a cell phone company named BASH and third richest human on the planet (Mark Rylance) plans a mission to send drones to the comet to drill explosives deep inside it that when detonated, will splinter the giant into smaller meteoroids that will then be steered into the Pacific ocean where they will be recovered and knowingly worth trillions of dollars. A win-win, right? Save the planet and help the rich get richer.

Seeing a picture of a comet hurtling towards Earth isn't enough to make anyone believe the apocalypse is near. But once the comet can finally be seen by looking up into the sky, the reality of the situation sinks in across the nation, while the President still campaigns at rallies to convince her supporters it is a loss of their rights to look up, and actively ignites a movement to resist and instead look down.

Meanwhile, a joint United Nations deflection mission fails at launch, leaving the planned BASH Mission the only hope to save the planet. It too fails, however, leaving the planet to its forecasted, forewarned fate.

The movie is peppered with well-known actors throughout. Dicaprio and Lawrence are outstanding. Streep, Blanchett, and Jonah Hill, who plays the President's son and Chief of Staff, provide comedic moments. Timothee Chalamet brilliantly portrays a religious skateboarder, and delivers an eloquent prayer at a gathering of characters sitting around a table giving thanks, before enjoying what turns out to be their final meal.

The movie is a metaphor for what is happening around us. We hear about our planet's crisis. We are subjected to media and pictures of the crisis, yet we are slow to act on it, don't believe it, or ignore it all together. We elect leaders who are dismissive or turn a blind eye. We prioritize news stories where a celebrity breakup is more important than saving our planet and in turn ourselves. Sadly, we have grown numb to the sound of the ticking timebomb. It's the tornado that never appeared.

***Be sure to continue watching during the closing credits - all the way to the end***

Really?? What a waste of talent & my time!
11 December 2021
No aliens here. Just a plodding story that wastes everyone's time. Arrgh!!! And I love Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) and Octavia Spencer (The Help) so much! And why does the youngest boy have an Indian accent when his parents and brother do not? Skip this movie if you're looking for a Sci-fi thriller. I thought it would get better or at least have a twist at the end - but nope! Double arrgh!!

One of the scariest opening sequences ever made. It will make you lock all your doors, close every blind, and look in every closet before you go to bed each night. The ending is just as terrifying. Carol Kane is perfection.

The paranoia builds. Who can you trust, when there's no one you trust. Mia Farrow is amazing. Ruth Gordon is indelible. A masterpiece of film making. True to the novel by Ira Levin.

Entertaining but a Weak Villain
13 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
My thoughts:

>It was long. Looooong.

>The first 20-mins were fantastic. True Bond gadgets and stunts.

>The story picked up 5-years later yet Bond & Madeline looked exactly the same. Literally no difference to support the illusion of 5-years in the future.

>The plot was confusing.

>The villain was disappointing.

>Everyone equipped with machine guns yet not one bullet from the bad guys found its mark, however every shot from the good guys was 100% accurate 100% of the time.

>Bond knew that was his daughter. Why not have a father/daughter moment between the two of them where he let his guard down and showed some emotion towards her. This is James Bond's daughter people! A first! Missed opportunity in my opinion.

>I would have preferred to see more of the Agent who had only been on the job for 3-weeks (she was bad ass and funny) instead of the angry, disrespectful female 007.

>I was puzzled why they consistently dragged the scientist around only to end up tossing him into the deadly waters below as they were escaping the doomed island.

>Bond movies are well known for their opening song montage. Most are Oscar nominated and go on to be the winner in their category. You hear them on the radio for years to come. The choice to grant that coveted task to Billie Eilish was not only an obvious attempt to attract the Generation Z audience, but the song was simplistic and familiar in her style. Not memorable at all. Billie might still hit the jackpot, however, because this year failed to produce a song that defined the movie in which it came from. I saw that she had co-written "No Time to Die", so no doubt it will be nominated.

A Twist You Will NOT See Coming
31 October 2021
Probably one of the most annoying mother/daughter duos I've ever seen.

A few examples, they ask the little girl to be quiet to avoid being found, yet she cries hysterically and screams at every clang. The mom calls her daughter Zoeza, yet she reminds her mom to call her Zoe - like 700 times. The mom screams at the top of her lungs, "Run!", as if she was yelling at a football stadium full of people. Not exactly what you should do to remain undetected.

So many times I just wanted them to toss the little girl out of the bunker, just to shut her up permanently. And the mom - so over the top dramatic in every interaction. You, out of the bunker, too, ma'am!

Now that I got that out of my system, the movie does have its mysteries, which reveal themselves in strategic flash backs. The only saving grace of this movie, however, is the twist at the end. I did not see it coming at all. Few movies have pulled it off and this one actually did. Bravo, bravo...
