The Winchesters (2022)
Supernatural Lite
I love Supernatural. A main feature of the show was the interaction between Sam and Dean. The ups and downs. The quirks. The humor. None of that is evident in The Winchesters. The actors don't have any chemistry. Not to mention the acting being mediocre at best. Worst of the lot is Meg Donnelly's Mary. 2nd is Jojo Fleites over the top Carlos, although I must admit the Holy Water Hair Whip in a recent episode was pretty cool. John and Latika are serviceable. One huge difference is that the original was bloody. VERY bloody. Not much of that here at all. Kind of a sanitized version of Supernatural. And the laugh out loud moments that happened often in the original are completely missing here. Supernatural often made fun of itself. Winchesters takes itself too seriously. Supernatural was a home run. This show is a foul ball.
Columbo: A Friend in Deed (1974)
Plot flaw
This is a great episode with a wonderful twist ending. However, it seems there is a plot flaw. Commissioner claims burglar committed both murders. Columbo makes burglar to fake blackmail 1st murderer, saying he will confess to other burglaries and cause cops to look elsewhere for murderer(s). Cops burst in and arrest burglar for blackmail. But if burglar committed both murders, what is he blackmailing 1st murderer for? Blackmail only valid if guy committed murder, not if he's was innocent. If he's innocent, what could possibly be the motive for blackmail? There is absolutely no reason for 1st murderer to pay blackmail for something he supposedly didn't do.
Von Ryan's Express (1965)
Wrong general?
In the movie, repeated references are made to needing clearance from General Wilhelm von Kleist. According to my research, von Kleist never served in Italy, where the movie takes place. The commanding general in Italy was 'Smiling' Albert Kesselring.
Babes on Broadway (1941)
Mickey Rooney at light speed
This is one of those Hollywood 'Let's put on a show!' movies that were so popular in that bygone era. Such ha sense of sadness, though, when you realize that so many of the stars died young(Judy Garland-47, Ray McDonald-34, Virginia Weidler-41). Mickey Rooney, always a little high-strung, outdoes himself here, as he seems a 78RPM record, while everyone else is moving at 33 1/3. The minstrel number at the end is really quite embarrassing by today's standards, but it was the sort of thing they could get away with in those days. Quite a few of the standard 'view from above' shots common in Busby Berkeley films. I found it interesting as a look back at a bygone time that never really was.
American Wedding (2003)
Just AWFUL!
Hopefully, this awful movie will put an end to this mediocre series that has gotten worse with each sequel. Almost watchable until Stifler shows up. So tell me, you're in a restaurant getting serviced under the table when your Dad walks in and you jump up with your pants around your ankles and your girlfriend still under the table. Not only doesn't the restaurant throw you out on your a**, but the patrons give you a standing O when you propose to her, with your pants still undone? How charming! Funny? Not in the least! But I hang in there for a while until stifler shows up,ranting neverending curses like he was Joe Pesce in Casino. Whatever was appealing in the first two incarnations of this series is certainly missing here.
Keeper of the Flame (1942)
Today's politicians should take note
Tracy's speech at the end of the movie about the American public being able to handle the truth is a point that should be well taken by today's politicians. Nothing is worse than finding out you have been lied to. Instead of sweeping it under the rug, Tracy's character brings the deception to the forefront for all to see. We would all be better off if our media and representaives had the same courage.
