Cold Case: Wishing (2005)
Cold Case at its best
There's nothing on TV like Cold Case anymore. I'm watching this episode 10.5 years after the original air date and it still stands up well. Incredibly touching and sad episode.
Everything that's good about Cold Case is at its peak here - the music, the sad stories, the character back stories.
I love how the writers are able to take seemingly horrible and cruel people and give realistic reasons why they act like they do. I felt absolutely outraged at the beating scene on the tracks. Later you discover that the attackers were actually acting out of good reason - the attackers girlfriend had been sexually assaulted. It transpires that the sexual assault never happened and the victim made a terrible choice due to societal pressures of sexual virtue.
We never get to find out what happens in sentencing in Cold Case, so the ending seems even crueler - that a desperate act of kindness leads to a murder charge.
9/10!
Dark Angel: ...and Jesus Brought a Casserole (2001)
One of the most Memorable Scenes in TV History
It's September 2011 and I just sat down and re-watched this episode for the third time since it originally aired. I can still vividly remember the scene where Zack gives his heart to Max, it was shocking, incredibly touching and thrilling. How the writers took the season long enemy, Lydecker, and turned him into a twisted fatherly figure was a great touch for the season ahead.
One of the best episodes of any show I've ever seen. Even 10 years on it doesn't look dated and if we got a blu-ray copy I'm sure no one could even tell the difference.
10 years on and I was still drawn in by the twist in the episode where Max is actually shot when she imagines she's hanging out with her buddies at crash then getting with Logan.
10/10!
Dark Angel: Brainiac (2002)
Very entertaining episode!
I'm re watching all the Dark Angel eps as I recently got the DVDs. Since I first saw it air on Channel 5 in the UK one episode really did stick with me, it was this one.
Firstly from a sci-fi perspective it's so interesting how complex mathematics can predict the future. That's all Brain did all in his head.
The actual story was one of the best of the season too because it shows how nice of a woman Max is. Brain had a crush on her growing up and he reveals this to Max when they are looking through photos. Rather than be disgusted by it, or ignoring it, Max just acts cool and sweet about it. The ending especially was poignant, Brain decides to save Max's life going against all his genetic programming and living on emotions. That is the very opposite of cold, hard, mathematical calculations. Logan's showing of Brain on eyes only and Max's reaction topped off a very emotional episode.
The episode perfectly illustrates how Max, despite her beauty doesn't care about what people look like in order to care for them. It's the same with Joshua. What others may find frightening or repulsive Max is fine with.
Stargate: Atlantis: Reunion (2007)
Atlantis at its best
I'm rewatching the show. What struck me about this episode is the production values seemed to have stepped up a notch, everything just looked better (lighting, hand held camera for fight scenes). It's also a great episode because of Jason Momoa's performance. This reminded me of Season 3 episode 3 Sateda, which again had a brilliant performance by Momoa.
The final fight scene with his fellow country-men is wonderfully choreographed and so sad at the same time. The scene also made me realise that Momoa would have been great in Avatar, the way he started the fight by tapping his thighs ala All Black dance was very Naavi! James Cameron missed a trick there!
Angel: Shells (2004)
One of the very best episodes of Angel
I really loved this ep. It's not the typical ep I like, it wasn't action bound and wasn't particularly thrilling. It had action moments no doubt but it wasn't one of the big grandiose action episodes. But the storyline was brilliant. I fully expected a formulaic ending: evil Fred (who's not Fred) goes on a rampage to conjure her army, the gang fight it and eventually win. But a really nice surprising twist: we are confronted with an old beast who doesn't know her/his position in the order of things anymore. Good and evil become almost blurred and it's a matter of evolution.
It's more of an evolutionary analysis, but it's as if evil Fred is the used to being the highest in the food chain - the T-rex. Now the T-Rex has come back into an unfamiliar world where they aren't top dog, where cunning, intelligence, back stabbing and greed get one ahead. I took it as not she's evil but just fulfilling a biologically ordained role. Now she has to adapt. She's lost her only connection to the world (her priest) and without her army attempts to befriend Wesley. She needs guidance, she's completely used to killing humans as if they are ants. And to her, she does view them as ants. Would we think twice about crushing an ant? About killing a cow to consume it? To her she is that far up the evolutionary chain to render humans as mere cockroaches to borrow Wesley's simile.
This all links in with how Gunn feels, he tries to be something he's not in a world he doesn't belong. The knowledge of the law can be intoxicating, lawyers are treated as a proud member of society. People of great learning and knowledge. Completely opposite to his original role as 'muscle'.
The one line that really stood out for me in this episode isn't the well written end scene where evil Fred and Wes are discussing humanity but when Harmony says "the girl of your dreams loved you, that's more than most people get".
One of the most brilliant episodes I've seen of the show since it's peak (IMO) of Season 2 and I'd rate it as far up there as Buffy's 'The Gift' in terms of philosophical questions and answers.
Judge Dredd (1995)
The Jurisprudence of Judge Dredd Determined
I gotta say I love this film. Today was the first time I saw it. They just don't make films like this anymore. It's damn funny, doesn't take itself seriously and is just pure action.
I'm a law student and really into legal theory although it's not an original idea of the movie makers since it was a comic before the jurisprudence of Judge Dredd is fascinating.
The law has been deified in the future, the statute book is even has a gold edge to its pages hinting at the sacred status of it. The judiciary are subservient to the law, to the letter. There is no implied common law system but the 'good book' contains all that needs to be known. Summary executions are common and trials rare. The law cannot be wrong, it cannot be sorry it just is.
17th and 18th century English legal history have come full front in the film. In that century Parliament enacted an ever greater number of capital offences for a perceived endemic problem of lawlessness. The bloody code as it was termed sentenced defendants to death for trivial offences such as wood taking, wrecking, and property offences. The law was deified, the judges helpless to her power to carry out sentences. The magic, mercy and justice of the law was admired by all from the working class to MPs. This is precisely what happened in the Judge Dredd verse.
So yeah that's why I think the film is damn neat. And in the year 2005 in light of recent international and national law infringements of the governments of the west; we have to question - do we need to be completely serviant to the law, when those in charge of its administration have such wanton disregard for it? Indeed do we need Judge John Dredd to enforce the law and pronounce "I AM THE LAW!" in the UK Parliament and US Congress?! OK yah that's kinda lame but whatever it'd be cool.
Dredd's opening line "I AM THE LAW", now that shoulda been up there with "I'll be back".
Harvard Man (2001)
Not as bad as people make out
Reading all the negative comments I wasn't gonna watch the film but with SMG in it I just had to. I was pretty surprised to say the least. It is a good film. It explores philosphical debates about the self, I, the void in your mind etc. the end message is excellent to all those who examine every second they exist: dont look inward at yourself; look outward at the world and enjoy its splender. The scene when Alan got real high on 3 hits of LSD was very funny. I just don't see what's so bad about this film. Its worth at least 6/10.
Seven Days (1998)
1st series great, second entertaining
7 Days seems to have been two shows. The first series was edge of your seat plain great television. The plots always challenged you and the fact that many of the events in the first season hit close to home on 9/11 makes them all the more special. The writing was consistent and both Sci-fi nit pickers and action fans alike could enjoy it.
The second and I suspect third (haven't seen it yet) seems to be targeted more towards a 14-29 male audience. Sci-fi 'nit pickers' won't enjoy some inconsistencies (which can be explained, however but its more to do with bad writing). The plots get a little less serious and the backsteps rarely seem to be for national security. But, to me at least, its still very entertaining and got a great deal funnier. So those of you who enjoy general action shows will enjoy it throughout but those of you "more serious", for want of a better word, won't enjoy the second and third seasons as much.
Its a shame it got cancelled but it did make room for Buffy so I'm not complaining.
Fargo (1996)
Why?
Why is this film rated so highly? The only reason I watched it was a friend of mine who is into the same type of films as me said it was a really good film. So I watched it and actually fell asleep. I have no idea why this film is rated so highly.
Some scenes are funny but its just so slow. But this movie got me into other films by the Coen brothers like "The Man Who wasn't there" which is a hundred times better than this.
Tick Tock (2000)
Cleaver (no spoilers)
The only reason I watched this film was because of Megan Ward but I'm glad I did. The film is good to pass the time I like these types of flicks. I think it can be compared to 'Wild Things' its got a ton of plot twists and some twisted humor.
Well worth the watch. The cast is good as it needs to be with the two female leads doing well. All the film needed was an actual 'scary' bad guy figure none the actors came across that way.
There's Something About Mary (1998)
Everyone knows a Mary
This film was great, the reason being I think is that everyone knows a girl like Mary from their school years. I certaintly do.
The best scene in the movie is the fight with the dog one of the all time classics.
