Hick (2011)
Good Movie with Supreme Acting
First off the movie is very good, it's not great but nonetheless a good movie. The movie itself does lack some depth and elements that would have made it a great picture but it's also another example that exceptional acting can exist within a lacking movie.
First off Chloe Moretz, how could anyone not like this kid? She's just stunning to watch on screen. She ranks right up there with the top kid actresses of their time, Dakota Fanning, Jodi Foster, Saoirse Ronan etc.. She's just that good whether it be a foul mouth little vigilante superhero, a 12 year old blood sucking killer or an intense peek into the life of a little girl who has absolutely nothing good in her life to help guide her into adulthood. She captures audiences with tools of facial expressions, sincerity, real tears and of course her innate ability to drop F bombs like she's a drunken sailor. She's the type of actor that makes any movie better. With her in a picture it's a win-win for all that is involved even if it's just a viewer.
Eddie Redmayne - I don't know what it is about this guy but he's a true scene stealer, He has a wonderful ability to bring life into his characters and an element of realism that is far superior then most actors we see today. I watched a few episodes of The Pillars of the Earth and although I didn't like the series Redmayne was the only interesting actor in the series. I think it's his realistic young man next store, somewhat dorky trouble making look combined with excellent acting ability that sets him apart from today's actors. Watch out for Eddie because I think he's going to have a wonderful career.
Blake Lively was really good as well, totally believable and a pleasure to watch. The rest of the cast although good were pretty much just filler and could have been pulled off by most actors today.
Anyway if you like character studies and the struggles of youth then you'll enjoy this movie. Even though the movie itself lacks some depth the main cast will definitely give you a feel for the characters and at times it may even feel like you're a fly on the wall or standing in the same room with them. The actors will draw you in and Chloe through her character of Luli can and will make grown men eyes swell up and shed a tear; especially any fathers with daughters.
Second Skin (2008)
Not Real
Although I played World of Warcraft, I never raided or had a high end character. My part was heavily scripted and improvised based on the direction of the producers.
It was just something to do to add to my resume. They were not supposed to use my real name either but the producers were unethical in their approach for me to do the movie.
They actually would buy me alcohol so i would get a buzz on and open up more because I thought the movie doc was stupid. So please don't send me anymore email telling me your hardship stories. I'm not the person you think I am.
They also lied about where i lived, who I lived with, what I did for work. It's not a real look into a gaming addicts life. Unless perhaps the losers from Indiana were for real but that I don't know. From what i can tell they were actually real life friends of the producers who were also playing a role.
The Last Airbender (2010)
Horrible is an under statement.
This movie is awful with a very few exceptions that being the little boy in this movie does seem to have potential as an actor. Despite there being no depth in his character he managed to give the character a little substance. The visual effects were pretty awesome. these two reasons are the only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1.
The young girl acting is flat but then again she's given a role of a character that lacked depth, it's like trying to create something out of nothing.
The fight sequences were awful, the only one that looked to have martial art ability was the little boy but that wasn't enough to make the action scenes interesting.
All the dancing involved to bend the elements bordered on the line of stupidity.
Although this movie is targeted to younger audience I think even kids would think this movie is too stupid to get into.
Also without giving a away anything the movie seems to stop in the middle of it and end. Sort of like watching a weekly TV show that leaves you hanging until next week. I only hope there will be no next week for this movie.
Definitely not worth the time of day to watch.
Hounddog (2007)
What it took for a little white girl to sing the blues.
Warning- Some of this maybe consider a possible spoiler It takes something extreme to get a 12 year old white girl to sing the blues. She was a shimmer of light being engulfed by the darkness that surround her. Everyone turned on her, her father neglected her and then became mentally challenged, her grandmother gave her no room to be "her", the stranger lady lied and turn her back on her, her childhood friends that she confined in would turn against her and even her idol Elvis kept on riding by. The only person she could trust was Charles and he was a mentor that guided her to find peace and harmony within her spirit. All her Elvis mimics weren't her true self it was just a fantasy, an escape from her daily hardships. Charles could see her for what she really is, which was an amazing beautiful gift from god that was trapped in a world of darkness. That's why Charles says 24 minutes in the film "feeling the spirits in the dark, are you?" Charles identifies her life as that of a snake charmer or medicine man that handles the venom of the snake when the medicine man gets so much of the venom in their veins they either die or become immune to it. What more poison can a little girl have then to be raped? She was bite by the snake and the venom was killing her. Charles realized this and knew her spirit was buried and suffocating from the darkness that poison her body, mind and soul. He knew the only way to bring forth that spirit was for her to do which she loved most despite all the wrong she been dealt and that was to sing "hounddog" but not to imitate Elvis with the song but to sing it from her own perspective, with her heart and soul. Dakota plays it perfectly when she first is standing their singing I can almost see the darkness around her through her body language and speech but as she sings it's like a light emerging from underneath her and rising upward completely surrounding her that takes her away from that dark place. As horrible as it seems, something like what happen to her would make a little white girl sing the blues.
As for Dakota Fanning she absolutely blows my mind. I never seen a child on screen as talented as her. I just hope as she gets older that the life style that comes with being a famous actor doesn't eat her up. I personally have and will continue to enjoy seeing her grow up before my eyes on the wide screen as she continues to take on challenging roles such as Lewellen.
In my opinion Dakota is the next Hilary Swank but yet innovating enough to still be in her own league.
way to go kiddo!
