Unfrosted (2024)
Clichés hold true
For a film released on a subscription service like Netflix, there sure was an obscene amount of publicity hype. I believe it was because everyone knew this film had one week to gather views before the word of mouth killed it.
I am a huge fan of conceptual films. I even thought the Warhol character was played by Jim Jarmusch (not Daniel Levy). What Seinfeld has made is an Easter egg loaded with personal jokes. I'm 54 and from Michigan, so I get many of the cultural cereal references, but my kid just stared blankly.
Seinfeld knows how to connect with people, but he lacked a writing partner who could bring the story down to earth long enough to make it funny.
Many good set ups in this film, not enough landed.
Wine Country (2019)
No wonder SNL is horrible
This film has lots of buzz but it's like a tire with a leak, it gets flatter the longer it goes.
Each of the cast has had their moment in the limelight, but putting them together turns into a lame rehashed string of dated observational jokes woven together by a plot that wouldn't have made it to the 12:30 - 1 slot on Saturday Night Live.
I hope they got paid well. I feel bad for Tina Frey for agreeing to do a cameo.
Five Minutes (2017)
We don't all need a hug.
As the parent of two Montessori children, I can tell you that this mirrors almost every parent's contribution to exercises like the one in this short.
Instead of spending a lot of time reading some philosophical review, just go watch it on Prime Video. It's 10 minutes long.
Idiocracy (2006)
Sadly too true to life
I had a chance to see this film prior to the final edit at a film festival. It is under-appreciated for what it is; a reflection on our culture. I believe now, 5 years after the release, it is funnier than when it came out, given the state of our politics and culture.
The characters are great, given that Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph are the only two actors that have had compelling roles other than this one. Dax did a great job as the sidekick. Great film, compared to most of the offerings in 2011.
The plot is simple and the main gag; we are getting dumber over the generations doesn't escape the many opportunities to exaggerate the point of the film.
Rubber (2010)
It could have been great
This film started out excellent (first 20 minutes). I had to pause to go to work, and I was telling co-workers about it. The idea of those 1970's suspense films brought to today using a tire as the antagonist seemed to be pretty brilliant, and the film maker started down the right path.
I just had the chance to finish it, and what a let down. The film has a great premise, but the plot just seemed to vanish and it turned into a series of "breaking form" gimmicks.
The acting was marginal, and the way the film ends is such a let down. There are a few funny scenes, so it's worth a watch after all the 7+ films on IMDb have been watched...
Seems like "B-" final project from a film student...
