The Salvation (2014)
A Modern Revenge Spahgetti Western
I first saw Mads Mikkelsen in Valhalla Rising when it came out and then again a few years later. Impressive, violent and psychedelic film. After that I started looking for other films he'd stared in. I was impressed with this film. Most modern westerns are either based on the "budy" movie concept (which I can't stand) or are just insipid wastes of time from my perspective. This film took me back to the days of Clint Eastwood in his heyday and Charles Bronson in "Once Upon A Time In The West". It held my attention and was never slow. A little predictable at points for a movie watcher and reader like myself, but when it ended I didn't say to myself "There's an hour and a half of my life I can never get back." like I unfortunately have to say about a lot of films. If you're in the mood for a good "revenge" western, this is your film.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Poor, Poor Charlize.
First off, I'm old enough to have seen the original Mad Max movie. I find it sad that The Hollywood elites can't come up with anything new and just have to keep rehashing sequel after sequel after remake after remake.
Now that I've seen the "new" Mad Max, my first impression was, this is so bad it's almost good. Destined to be a cult hit. I've reconsidered.
This is just pathetic! How in the world this waste of electricity, payroll and all the other expenses that go into a movie..(not that this really qualifies for that category) I will never understand. I guess some executives somewhere, China most likely, are sitting around thinking; "Remember that Australian flick with the guy and the dog? Let's rip that one. Throw in some politically correct themes. We'll have a blockbuster."
I've enjoyed Tom Hardy in his past work, and Charlize I've enjoyed too, but in this case, not exactly resume enhancing, Oscar material.
That being said; if you loved the original Mad Max, Mel Gibson franchise, you'll be sadly disappointed. If you've never seen the original films and like lots of shiny flashy things with nothing inside them then please, knock yourself out.
For myself...this movie was 2 hours and some seconds of my life lost that I can never get back.
Logan's Run (1976)
A Must-See for fans of dytopian Sci-Fi
full disclosure...My dad moonlighted as a projectionist in all the movie theaters in our area. I got to see a lot of movies over and over on the big screen in a beautiful old theater with a whole closed off balcony to myself. Free pop and popcorn. *S* As a boy of 13 years, this blew me away. The memories associated with films like this keep bringing back to watch them again. Yes, I have to agree with some other reviewers about the poor special effects and acting. Still, if you can step back from our modern technological world a bit, this film is still worth watching. I watch it every couple years. It popped back into my memory again after hearing a little audio clip from if mixed into music on SomaFM a few nights ago. I recognized it immediately. Time to watch Logan again!
Godspell: A Musical Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew (1973)
Still a Fantastic film
I originally saw this movie when it was released, and my Dad, who moonlighted as a projectionist, took me to the State Theater in Lexington, Va. This was before the old movie theaters were cut up into mini 'cinemas'. The balcony at the State was closed to the public for who knows why...fire marshal, unruly patrons, cleaning expense, whatever. When my Dad was working I had the whole balcony, 200 seats or so to myself. The projectors were the old Carbon-Arc. Most people probably don't even know what those are. Sound and picture were amazing. Wasn't Dolby surround, but for 1973... This is a must see movie!! Amazes me still seeing the empty sets for the filming. Excellent music! "day by Day" and "by my side"...You have to hear them. The film may seem dated to many of you...a last gasp of the 60's flower child culture. That may be so. However, I still HIGHLY recommend it. Even if you're not a religious person, the music and sets are worth it. It's a long movie...stick with it. 40 years later it's still holding my attention if that tells you anything.
