Jin-Rô (1999)
By the hand of Mamoru Oshii
Notable drama about our fears, doubts, actions for which we regret... The film mix a good script with a very elaborated story, Mamoru Oshii work about a man who see how a girl commits suicide, been able to shoot before this happened, but not do it, and casually, he meet the girl's sister, and he fall in love. Sometimes the film may seem a slow story, but it doesn't. It is an unknown little jewel of anime, sad and beautiful. I can highlight the beauty a delicate music of a very good composer, but not well known, Hajime Mizoguchi. I like very much the diverted history. It's very curious the idea of a Japan who lost the war, but not against EEUU, but against Germany. Highly recommended.
Mortuary (2005)
Poor Tobe Hooper
I don't understand what going on with this director. He was one of those master horror of the 70'th, like Carpenter, Cronenberg or Craven, and instead this, to see this film makes you ask yourself: where is the director of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"? This was his first and very interesting film, and from there this director became relevant in the business. And then, came the also interesting "Salem's Lot" and his biggest hit: "Poltergeist". And instead, if you look his recent filmography, you'll be perplexed with films like "The Toolbox massacre" and "Mortuary". "The Toolbox massacre" was a bad film, but it had its little interesting things, all of which contributed by Hooper, but with "Mortuary" he has loose his mind. The film has not nothing new or interesting, all are nonsense often seen, and it is violent even. For ending, a film with no logic that nobody likes, and a demonstration of how a good director can doomed.
Rurôni Kenshin: Meiji kenkaku romantan - Tsuioku-hen (1999)
From today you'll get call Kenshin
With no doubt, we have here one of the masterworks of the anime. It is great, from the beginning to the end, in this film everything is carefully prepared: the direction and the screenplay a memorable, told with an unusual beauty in anime, delve much into the characters and gives a faithful description of the time, both the politics and the era, and the problems that face the innocent who dies day after day about the politic situation. Here we have one sentence of the film: "... you should not feel resentment even despair, one who has died will not return to life, you glad to be alive, ...". And of course, I can't forget the score, one of the best anime score I never listen, it helps you with its delicacy and tragic beauty to believe the tragedy who have to live with poor Shinta (later knows like Kenshin).
Sennen joyû (2001)
Great!!
One of the best films (animated or not) I see lately. All in this film is great. This director has a privileged mind, and a very original way to told tails. If I have to say a similar American director, it would be David Lynch with no doubt, only with the different that in Kon's films the stories have more sense (does not make them better). But we haven't make comparisons. Kon is Kon and only Kon. For me, there are two significant secondary characters, the reporters, they seem to me very sympathetic and necessaries. This is a typically Kon's way of telling stories, like he will do with "Paranoia Agent". This director loves to hide his stories under major metaphors and different subplots. Nothing else to say, except I recommend this film to every living thing with a piece of heart.
Batman: The Animated Series (1992)
The original Batman
We have here, perhaps, one of the best superhero American series, or at least, one of them who has best shape the universe of the superhero who it adapted. In this is presented the Batman as Bob Kane created him, and with a lot of influences of Tim Burton's films. In fact, if you have seen the Burton's films, you can see the similarities between both Gotham recreation, besides the great Danny Elfman's score, because, although it has not the same main theme, it has the same musical structure. Talking about the Batman universe, can say that what the series has best embodied (or at least, for me) is the Bruce Wayne/ Batman psychology itself. I like very much how the series treat the character, in so darkly and adult way (not how in the Joel Schmacher's poorly films or in the series Batman Beyond). Although not only Batman, other character too, like my favorite villain: the Joker. And finally, to say that there are two animated films of Batman (from the creators of the series): Batman subzero (which even I can not say nothing about, because I not see it), and Batman: the mask of the phantom (that I see and I recommend it to all who have seen the series, because in 70 minutes the series talk about more things than Schumacher in 3 hours).
