Showgirls (1995)
Dynasty on Ice
If you want to see a big budget version of Dynasty then look no further. Showgirls is just as camp, just as bitchy, just as over-the-top and just as funny as any Aaron Spelling production.
Admittedly my friend and I were the only two people laughing in the cinema but I suspect that was because everyone else there was trying to watch the movie as though it should be taken seriously. Very odd.
The signpost at the end of the movie said 'Los Angeles' and I'm still hoping that one day there will be a sequel set in La La Land. I can dream, can't I?
Death Becomes Her (1992)
It just gets funnier every time I watch it
I love this movie and have watched it more than any other film I own. What makes it for me is the subtle face acting of the two leads whose comic timing is perfect. Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn have never been so good (plus this is the only film in which Bruce Willis doesn't do his trademark smirk even once).
Every role is played to perfection and the script is a comedy work of art.
I won't bother defending it to those people who need their jokes hammered home to them by comedy actors whose only way of getting a laugh is to gurn and fart. Each to their own.
Big Business (1988)
Two Bettes are better than one
Why doesn't Bette Midler make movies like this anymore? This is the second most watched film that I own (Death Becomes Her being the first). Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler are on top form here (watch Bette's sudden change of expression as she orders a Campari and soda) and work wonderfully together.
Aside from the mini-golf tournament scene (which I would shorten) there isn't a thing that I would change about this movie.
It ranks up there with Ruthless People and Outrageous Fortune as Bette's best work.
Reign of Fire (2002)
Christian Bale vs Dick Van Dyke
I'm not sure whose East End accent is worse but I suspect that it may be Christian Bale's. It sounded like he'd been having vocal training from Mark Fowler in Eastenders. It ruined the film for me.
Aside from that... I liked the dragons but the film seemed to have been shortened/cut and, due to lack of character development, I really didn't care whether anyone lived or died.
And yes... the poster of dragons torching London is very misleading.
I think Pitch Black did it all far better.
