An error has ocurred. Please try againJust like Los Angeles there are lots of movies available that show us a dark and gritty side of the famous city on the east coast.
BE CAREFUL! when you visit the big city, you'll be lost in a New York minute!
Good times, high stakes & all activity 24/7
An experience you don't miss out on, take every chance to visit the oasis of money in the Nevada desert!
For now everyone is safe, but when the time comes you better arm yourself with EMP weapons and be ready for the next stone age.
However... if one would look closer, there is a much more darker side of L.A. that goes beyond the all the make believe that we're so obsessed with. A side of L.A. so dark it's almost unthinkable to outsiders and deniers. Only a few directors dared to descend into that darkness to film whatever there was to be found. Their movies can be seen as the complete stories of events that would have otherwise ended up as easily overlooked small newspaper articles, except for the stories that revolve around mass destruction, good luck covering that up :P
Reality is that for most people in L.A. each day is a struggle to survive. While some are trying to get ahead, others prefer gang-life and engage in dangerous activities, some are illegally employed to do the dirty jobs. Some others just want to get totally wasted to forget about all their problems.
The movies in this list will take you on a journey to a not so pretty L.A. and it will certainly challenge your point of view. Welcome to: THE DARK SIDE OF L.A.!
BE WARNED! Some of these movies are almost a reflexion of reality...
A good story can even reach a whole new level when it is based on a true story, since much more research has been invested the project.

Close Up (1996)
Low Budget at it's best!
This movie represents an incredible impact achieved with few resources. I was especially amazed by the creative placement of well-made raw film material showed within the movie, it determined most of the gritty setting throughout the movie. With "Close Up" being Przemyslaw Reut's director and screenwriter debut, he really did a brilliant job at both of them. The story is well-written and in such a way that it relies much on the viewer's own interpretation.
The actors Michael Mauro and Eric Leffler portrayed very realistically characters that everybody is familiar with in some way through real life. Mauro playing an aspiring filmmaker from Belgium named Stefan van der Berg, a main suspect in a gruesome shooting spree he can't recall and Leffler playing a lawyer with a shark grin named Joseph Kline, seeking fame and fortune through the case of Stefan.
I think the movie was additionally trying to show a dark side of New York, but it surely succeeded at showing a dark side of human nature and it's secret intentions.
The Evil Below (1989)
A cool looking yet decent adventure movie
When I found this movie some years back in the discount bin for 1,50 I decided to give it a go. I have to admit it's cool cover art lying amongst generically looking DVD covers really caught my eye. The movie itself turned out decent, it isn't anything special nor is it a complete failure like some people may have pointed out.
The story revolves around a nearly bankrupt Captain named Max Cash who lives on a fictional island called San Sebastian. His surname says it all! He comes up with all kinds of fascinating stories about the sea just to stay in business. He hooks up with a beautiful blonde who is interested in his services and wants to rent his boat to do some treasure diving. As the story progresses they encounter stormy weather, bad luck, some clues, a mysterious individual, rivalry an eventually start romancing.
The pro's include: a good story, some funny wisecracking dialogue and at least one realistically looking fight scene.
The con's include: The slow pace of the movie, even though it got released in 1989 it looks pretty early 80s (this may affect some viewers) and it's misleading horror genre.
To all adventurers out there! Watch and learn about treasures of the deep.
