There is nothing here

Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes it's nice to watch a movie and see something, anything at all. This movie has nothing.

The loss of Hugo Weaving and Lawrence Fishburne is a hard pill to swallow to begin with, but to replace the characters the way they did with a typically lacking explanation? It's all too Matrixy in its lack of compelling explanation, but not Matrixy enough in its execution. Then - to placate the viewer with the worst kind of callbacks and tired plot devices already well used up from the first three movies...? Its just frankly insulting.

This movie cares way to much for itself, and forgets what made the concept and execution so compelling in the first place. Not unlike the situation neo and trinity find themselves in this movie.

A poor installment to say the least...

A real treat

What a great ride!

I'm Canadian, and nothing kills me more (being a Canadian) than saying that there is an undeniably 'crappy' feel to most, if not all, Canadian productions. That being said, this movie was actually really good. Great performances from most of the cast, really great to see Kenneth Welsh and Terence Stamp adding some credibility to whole thing.

As far as heist movies go, this one is fairly typical but the production/editing really pull it together. Kurt Russell does a great job along with Baruchel and Winnick and my usual aversion to Matt Dillon was even kept in check to some degree. Nice little twist-up at the end even if it was somewhat predictable. Also Some pretty funny scenes and exchanges, especially if you watch the outtakes in the credits.

All in all a great film with a surprisingly good feel.

Such a shame

Warning: Spoilers
Man from earth seems, by description, to be a film with an interesting plot base to write from. You might think that it could be interesting to observe how the director/writer pull it off. You may think that maybe they would tailor the story to some interesting sort of unbiased theological/scientific limbo which leaves the viewer provoked but not completely driven to one conclusion.

You would be wrong. As I was.

The acting is mostly poor and the production completely uninspiring... not to mention the writing. They sit there and initially show suspicion at the 1 or two objects and indications of the truth, but when they confront the subject they are pacified with kindergarten answers.

One character has a complete breakdown about 2/3rd's in, which you might imagine to be a reasonable response for a less emotionally stable subject when confronted with the daunting truth behind the "man[...]". Wrong again. The writer manages, with the help of the actors, to make the whole scene completely un compelling and un believable.

You would expect a "man[...]" of his nature to be slightly more learned about how to leave town without arousing suspicion, or to be more careful about building apparently close relationships with the people in every time and place he's lived.

Don't waste your time. Instead: call up a friend or two or five, grab a beer/drink, and talk the subject over yourselves. You will come up with much more intriguing observations and possibilities than this movie offers.

Zero plot 30
15 March 2013
I was speaking to an old friend the other day and the conversation meandered into the latest movies, she began to talk about Zero Dark Thirty and i knew i would have to tell her that i thought it was a complete waste of time eventually. This idea didn't excite me as it usually does when I'm given an opportunity to argue with someone about the merits of a film. I asked myself 'why?' and immediately realized why when she began to talk about it. "I didn't know that a women played such a major role in the whole thing.." she said. "Its interesting that someone like her was behind the whole thing pretty much...".

I was about to begin to explain to her why the presence of a woman in that role was not meant to be taken literally, or perhaps it was, but thats not the point.

This movie is different for Bigelow in that it doesn't appear to have a clear message, to me at least. Her other films always portray the subject in such a near-perfect light. Strange days, The hurt locker, Point break, and K-19 all seem to give a fair presentation to both sides while staying decidedly in the realm of opposition to the main ideals and themes depicted. This "opposition" is exactly what draws a person like me to a Bigelow film. I could not find her stamp on the movie until the end. Thats the other thing, did i really spend that much time watching a buildup to an event so highly spoken of in our time? (in north America at least). I was awestruck by the amount of desperate justification of the US' methods of war, interrogation, and the like. Its almost as if she believed that this truly was a means to an end, that showing this would do anything but convince people that harsh interrogation works and that if you make the US mad, seal teams will come to your home and efficiently deal with you. Then i remember what my friend said, and i realize that most people will take every scene as truth, every action as an insight into the workings of the situation. Its our point of view and interpretation that points us on the path of understanding.

That being said, don't waste your time on this two hour bore-fest, this pro-American barfy justification of perseverance and 'righteousness'. the first truly poor film on Bigelows list without a doubt.

Key and Peele (2012–2015)

Its hard making a sketch show...
15 February 2012
Remember a guy named Dave Chappelle? Take him and dilute his blackness between two guys and you have Key and Peele.

The show is designed exactly the same as a lot of other shows focused around one or two people; quick stand-up bits between skits. This being said, the show is pretty good. Its not all laughs all the time but when they nail a joke they really do NAIL it.

If you like racial humour mixed with truly creative writing (in the skits at least) then you should probably watch the first few episodes. The only bad thing about this show is the over-scripted and frankly very awkward stand up bits in front of the audience. Good show, good guys, bad stand-up. The skits are way to good to stop watching this show just cause of a little bad stand-up (which they might figure out SUCKS later on) i'll keep my digits crossed.

I'm baffled...
23 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Of all the movie reviews I've had the pleasure of reading to-date, i must say that the reviews for this one leave me confused...

As for the movie, i loved it. I was blown away. Saw it right at release and wasn't expecting much so maybe thats why i was so taken aback with the quality (in a good way).

I am a huge sci-fi fan. I've literally seen it all whether its movies or TV, right from the first star trek ever made to all good and bad spin-offs. Stargate, same thing. Battlestar galactica etc... All the classic movies and all the new gems (and steamy piles of crap sometimes)in this genre have been viewed by me. I literally made a point of this 5 years ago. Now that you know I'm not a sci-fi noob i must say that it doesn't make any sense to me that so many reviewers have said that "those who like this aren't sci-fi fans" or, "those who like this haven't seen a single episode of trek/stargate". This is original (despite its references to so many movies and shows), moving, exciting, and most of all believable! Ya i said it... believable! EVERY SCI-FI MOVIE/SHOW EVER MADE OR DREAMPT UP HAS "HOLES" Such is the genre of science fiction...FICTION Things like "How can Gerty communicate with earth if its the tower thats blocking the signal", if they had taken the time to explain this it would have been some easily creatable sci-fi typical explanation "uhhh... the tower has a .... Gerty detecting algorithm", its complicated and poorly explained in sci fi, always is, thats why its almost better that they leave it open, some dumb sci fi explanation for these "holes" would have taken away from the writing and point of the movie. Sure, you'd need some sort of a centrifuge to create gravity where there should be none (the moon-base interior), and we've no mention of this... would that have helped the people who didn't like the "holes"? Maybe they live in a future where technology exists that allows gravity to happen in the moon-base.... point is WHO CARES? thats for the writer to decide because (drum roll....) ITS A WORK OF FICTION! Watch this movie for what it is, a good, original, and sly flick with great acting, great premise and good set/effects.

Think for two seconds how hard it would be to make a sci-fi movie without giving any referable aspects of other sci fi in it.

The movie isn't perfect, i agree that more probably could have been done with the plot/excitement after starting with such a great premise, but i don't feel it takes much away from it.

Most of all, to all of you who consider yourself sci-fi fans: don't be deterred by bad reviews. This is a perfect example of the genre and delivers everything a true fan of sci-fi loves.

Straightforward action right?
22 November 2011
We were all excited to see this, me and 6 of my friends had our tickets pre-purchased and we trekked out to the theatre which is in its own little way becoming more and more uncommon. I wasn't expecting much... i knew it was a comic (not that popular) and i knew it had a lot of cash and production muscle in it, not that it means its going to be good ... but the point is that i really wasn't expecting to be dazzled, maybe some Harrison/Craig action mixed with some sci-fi and sexy-ol' Olivia Wilde right? Wrong. At about 45 mins into the movie i had fallen asleep, my one friend sitting next to me noticed this and found it quite funny but, interestingly enough, the one sitting next to me on the other side didn't notice because he was asleep also. Noticing that we were quite peaceful i guess he decided to let us be for the remainder, which for the most part we both did. Im 25, I've been going to movies for a while now ,not to say that i know more than anyone else my age, or that this implies some sort of knowledge, but I've never come close to falling asleep in a theatre. Apparently neither had my friend. Consider what kind of a feat it is to fall asleep in a modern movie theatre, consider now the added problem of explosions at max volume and attractive women doing exciting things purely for ones enjoyment... how did we sleep for 80% of the film? Better yet how did i (and my friend) still manage to walk away with a perfect understanding of the storyline? Needless to say the film didn't deliver the action it promised, never mind all the other characteristics of good films...

Modern racism perfectly exemplified
8 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Im not certain how its possible that so many people can give glowing reviews to this. To me such a high score on such an overwhelmingly mediocre film is ludicrous. I like a good action film, i quite enjoy Neesons acting usually, but this is horrible. I guess it makes sense that people like Pierre Morel and Luc Besson will continue to make loads of money cranking out this predictable, formulaic, demeaning and regressing cinema so why stop? I guess i would do the same. I wont go into the plot because there are some really fantastic reviews already (apparently there ARE people who have sense out there) that sum it up perfectly. Essentially UTTER crap, tripe, funny and horrifying but only when its not trying to be. Actually maybe i will go on, bear with me... i promise this is an accurate description. Before i continue i have to say that if you happen to be a student of sociology, or if your interested in understanding modern or historical racism then this movie actually has merit; but only as a study or example of how racism still exists everywhere in our world. Especially in the US. Seriously, its terrible to see that people think this raises some sort of awareness about human trafficking, once again other reviews have tackled this already but i must throw my lot in with the rest. Its too bad that people around the world have to put up with these stereotyped "threats to America", the crooked police (with a friggen baguette under his arm!), the Muslim/Albanian/UNAMERICAN (thats the point) who wants to take your daughter, give her drugs, rape her and then sell her to Muslims.... It exists sure enough, and its terrible of course, but this is neither appropriate or needed in this medium. French are stereotyped as incapable and crooked, Albanians as fat greasy ugly rapists (don't forget the drugs) who are apparently also really bad at what they do. I was about to go on but to this point i'll just say that this film is ignorant, and RACIST. "Damn we should have listened to Liam!!"the daughter thinks it, the wife thinks it, the step husband thinks it, the crooked police think it.... did i miss anyone? oh yeah, the abductors think it of course "he said he was coming... i sure underestimated that American"

Fine, hes superman and captain America in one, happens enough in movies and frankly not a big deal... but the tracking of the mobsters? c'mon... if your going to make him a secret agent you can actually create some justification as to how he is so bloody competent at finding people in a foreign country, but no they don't bother because then the writers might have to take two minutes to look at the storyboard, all we know is hes superman. Why leave every girl? if your superman you might as well take 2 minutes to do some good... he hurdled every other seemingly impossible obstacle easily enough.... No emotion from daughter or dad at death of friend? what about the parents? what about the OTHER GIRLS??? Where'd the methadone come from and why didn't they simply give us a reason for Neesons superman status? This in-of-itself is why the movie is so horrifyingly bad, they could easily throw two lines in explaining some of the less believable scenes but they don't!

IM ANGRY AND CONFUSED, mainly at how its possible that this received such a high rating. This is the best example i can think of right now of the worst movie ever made, for many many reasons.

All of you who think this is good or relevant to a human trafficking discourse, or that its good for awareness of the topic should seriously get some sense and, i mean this, feel ashamed. The money doesn't go to trying to stop human trafficking, it goes towards the house, cars, and meals of the already FAT Luc Bisson.

Its not the fact that this movie was made that gets me, there are always poor decisions being made for all the wrong reasons all around the world... its the fact that what i thought was a community of (for the most part) intelligent and conscious movie goers is not.

Respect your movies, don't put up with this garbage. Most of all respect the victims of a real and horrifying problem in our world: don't support this cinematic-diarrhea.

Its about Nazi zombies....
7 November 2011
To all of you who think that the script is "inconsistent" and "unbelievable", or that the zombies have varying skills and abilities compared to usual zombies, your correct. the movie, however, is about Nazi zombies.... you actually want a scientifically believable script which allows for Nazi Zombies to exist? Not me, that almost ruins it, and besides the idea is actually not that unbelievable too... This movie is amazing. It takes a possible death-trap idea and breathes new life to the Nazi Zombie concept. Good acting, okay script, great special effects, and great production/editing. I was expecting another re-hash zombie idea played out over a poorly designed script with the usual horrible acting but i was completely proved wrong. If you have ANY desire to watch zombie films, you should see this. If you are familiar with the Nazi zombie scene than you have no choice, you must watch this.

Its about Nazi zombies....
6 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
As far as zombie movies go, this is worth seeing.

Keep in mind its about Nazi Zombies. So... your gunna have some zombies, who were once Nazis, attacking poor unsuspecting people, in ways which a zombie perhaps doesn't usually attack.

Get used to it, they're organized and surprising, inconsistent and apparently verbal (at the end the zombie leader yells "rise!"). But what do you want? Its a movie about zombies, who were once Nazis, enjoy the great zombie kills, great gore, and hopelessness of a good zombie flick. Too much zombie material these days have no good zombie kills, at least this one delivers an entertaining and funny ride. Give me more Nazi zombie flicks like this, keep it coming i don't care how low the budget is you can do wonders with zombie material with a little creativity (and maybe some Nazis?). It looses one possible rating mark higher simply because they had to be attached to some gold or something...why? Itsa bunch of Nazis they don't need reasons to kill, they're Nazis.

If you liked this film try "outpost", another fantastic Nazi Zombie film which is in a league of its own.

Consider the history
6 November 2011
I have to say that i think one of the best things to take away from this movie also seems to be one of the things which nobody considers.

I'm not familiar with the original series or comic so i can not attest to its being good or bad in that sense. What i am familiar with is the historical significance of the battleship Yamato and the symbolism and slight role it played in WWII for the Japanese People. Japan had one of the most powerful navies (and arguably the most powerful)in the world at the beginning of hostilities in the Pacific theatre of WWII. By the 6th of April 1945 when the Yamato left port for the last time, the Japanese navy had been ravaged, they had lost most of their carriers and cruisers with only about 10% of its original naval forces remaining. The Yamato and a few escorts were to attempt to attack the now Allied occupied Okinawa in a near-futile attempt to deal a blow to the US fleet. She was destroyed en-route to the battle by relentless air attack by the US and never got to use her 9 46cm batteries, the largest in existence at the time. This story is about hope, honour, and the tenacity of the Japanese people as a whole. Of course it was corny, they raised the hulk of the ship out of the ground! And besides bearing a resemblance in spirit its clearly not the actual ship, its about 5 times as large. The acting was perfectly appropriate for the type of story this was and despite a few drawn out scenes i was still very entertained. Sure, some of the CGI at the end was, to quote another review, "dodgy", but for the most part actually pretty good. But, thats not what this movie is about.

Its about the symbolism of a desperate mission which only a Japanese navy would have taken, its about remembering history, and its about transferring it to a modern setting of hope prevailing in a time of despair. Enjoy the CGI, enjoy the space battles, don't worry about the inconsistencies with weapons and apparent inept "Gamillas" forces towards the end (maybe new recruits?),and instead enjoy the heroes and unmistakable, "fight to the last man" mentality and Japanese spirit which comes through in every scene.
