Death Sentence (2007)
If you liked Taxi Driver & Deathwish you should just re-watch them
I rarely bash a film, but this is a movie so here goes: Kevin Bacon & John Goodman were wasted in this recycled pile of 80's pulp. Basically if you threw Taxi Driver, Deathwish together & cast the one dimensional villains from The Crow you'd have this little treasure. Kevin Bacon's character was ineffectual in every way, if you are mad enough to start a gang war you shouldn't have any reservations about going thru with it. His character comes into question when he endangers his surviving family because of the loss of his son. If you want to see what this movie could have been a just a 10th of please watch Straw Dogs and enjoy. Boring,Trite & More Boring ..... THE END! -Erich Von
Penn & Teller: Bullshit! (2003)
Cowscat: the greatest show on earth
I just want to say that this is the single greatest show on TV. Somehow Penn & Teller managed to make a funny, scary and timely show that is just chock full of good information and very well researched. They are smart enough to not outright bash the uninformed with their opinions; instead they inundate the viewer with tons of credible sources and let them decide for themselves. The goal of this show is to break up stigmas & misconceptions about things that are widely thought of as true IE: Recycling, PETA, Bottled Water and a whole other laundry list of the stuff we just blindly accept. If you see any of the Bullshit DVDs for sale you really should just buy them outright, you won't be disappointed. -Erich Von
Grizzly Man (2005)
How I spent my summer vacation becoming bear scat
If anyone on this planet deserved to become a bear's lunch, it was probably Timothy Treadwell. Let me first point out that I usually love Werner's work, but this film was so hard to stomach (pun intended) because the "naturalist" was so completely unlikable. Watching this lunatic unravel on film was a little funny at first & then quite disturbing. His she-male toned narration was just dreadful & it's pretty obvious that he knew little or nothing about the nature of bears. Amie Huguenard is little more than a footnote in this because most of the footage is of Treadwell's insights & strange diatribes. Herzog starts the film with his usual empathetic tone but as the film progresses even he has to point out just how misguided Treadwell was. I score this one: Bears 2 Timothy Treadwell, Amie Huguenard & Werner Herzog 0
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Was this a remake?
I saw this movie yesterday and found it to be a gory squelch-fest with beautiful undead effects and the proper tension between the remaining few humans in the Mid-West, but I can't actually call it a remake. It has a mall and a cop and hordes of zombies but it is a different movie on every level. This has no real social underscore and their aren't two schools of thought on how to deal with the zombie problem, although they begin with a two camp face off that is quickly thwarted .I am a fan of this movie and I rated it a 7-8 out of ten, but the original (not to sound all film snob)is a better picture .If this film stood on it's own instead of having the same and being shadowed by a genre classic it would be viewed as a "28 days later" or "Dellamorte Dellamore". -Erich
