Magic Mike (2012)
Magic is a poor illusion
A series of scenes one after the other until there's no more. Upon seeing the closing credit roll my response was, "that's it?".
The characters are detestable or uninteresting and none of them are fully realised. That "Magic Mike" can't get a personal loan is the most actualised part of the movie and who cares about that?
Awful. Soderberg laid a bad egg. I gave it an extra star for the casting of Kevin Nash, because I love wrestling. I would have given it two extra but even he lost points for not doing proper star jumps.
For shame!
High Fidelity (2000)
Toxic masculinity personified
This is like triumph of the will for men's rights activists.
If you want something that says that white men are right and the rest of the world is the problem then I can't recommend this highly enough. If you have any capacity for self reflection or don't want to see how fragile white men view themselves as a victimised, marginalised and maligned then avoid. AVOID!
Holmes & Watson (2018)
Abysmal
The costume design raises it to 2 stars. A waste of a good cast and public domain property. The only person who gets a pass is Lauren Lapkus because she does the best with the z rate script. Etan Cohen should be banished to directing public access TV commercials for the remainder of his career.
The Wrong Missy (2020)
Lapkus makes her mark
I'm generally skeptical these dates of anything that Adam Sandler's name is attached to these days. While the movie itself has its shortcomings, not the least of which is Spade as the romantic lead it has a shining light: Lauren Lapkus, whose comedic performance is the superb.
It puts her alongside the best comedic actors of the moment. She completely commits to everything which means that many of the moments that would be rendered unfunny in less capable hands hit the mark or exceed it.
I will be going out of my way to watch her in the future.
The Grinch (2018)
An excellent iteration for all ages
It's been done a few times but this version captures the heart of the story. The jokes are plentiful and hit the mark for young and old. Cumberbatch leads an excellent voice cast he do a great job and the animation replicates that of the Seussian world perfectly.
A great directorial outing by the criminally underrated Scott Mosier who I look forward to seeing more from in the future.
Night of the Templar (2012)
Toilet
What a waste of time, money and resources. Gave it a go because of Norman Reedus, but even he is terrible. Tommy Wiseau put on an acting and directing masterclass in The Room when compared to this.
A narrated explanation of events at the beginning is an excuse for a lack of storytelling ability and I genuinely paused to check if it was a History Channel reenactment documentary before proceeding.
The male violence towards female characters was deplorable as was the passive acceptance by those characters; confusing and disturbing.
Woman wants to leave, gets choked out and the other people at the house start talking about the ladies liking the rough stuff? Poor at best.
This is the worst movie I have seen in a long time and I watched Grown Ups 2 recently.
Avoid.
