Paparazzi (2004)
Top 10 weird things about this film...
1) The Larramie main character talks to himself during a beach run at the start of the film, but this never happens again; 2) Larramie's expression never changes. Thus, one cannot tell if the man is guilty about his murders, or just plain cold-hearted; 3) The detective assigned to the case really is a total goober; 4) A great ending would have been if Larramie's confession to Harker was actually being recorded and watched by the police back in the third murdered man's house; 5) For a man who recently received a $500K settlement, Harker lives a squalid life; 6) Larramie is a harsh murderous man - a psychopath, if you will; 7) I genuinely feel for those who paid full cinema admission to see this movie when it came out; 8) Larramie's wife is kind of weird; 9) Larramie's kid sounds brain damaged when he first talks after coming out of his coma; 10) Avoid at all costs.
Elephant (2003)
Awful, boring, slow, low quality....
Do not believe the hype. This surely is one of the world's worst films. Obviously in a thinly disguised attempt to follow television's 'reality' craze, here is a 'reality' movie. How can you tell? Well, like reality TV, the production levels are low. It is shot in a lame, shaking video camera style and you barely hear 90% of the dialogue. Aren't movies meant to be the height of production values? Did Hitchcock, Polanski and Welles achieve so much for us to disregard it all? Surely no-one would buy a car which regressed to steam power to heighten the driver's 'sense of reality'?...(then again, batteries?) This movie is slow, dull, and it feels like they chopped off the last concluding 30 minutes. With all respect to the victims of the senseless crime upon which this movie is based, one cannot help but feel the director took excessive 'artistic' license in his portrayal of the two young murderers. It's hard not to tell people not to believe the hype over a movie like this, but please, it is not at all that good.
Who's Your Daddy? (2002)
Very funny
While this is no Academy Award winner, the film is genuinely funny. It is styled like another derivative US high school teen comedy, but really made me laugh. In fact, the film tends to make more fun of itself than 'gross-out' gags, of which there are hardly any.
The scene where the lead character has hard-fought fantasy in algebra class is absolutely hilarious. The film features one of the brothers from Malcom in the Middle who adds to the humour, especially when the lads watch an "alternate' video by mistake as a prelude to their party.
Why not spend a few dollars renting this movie overnight. As an unpretentious fluff piece it is 5 stars.
