The Tall Man (2012)
While entertains, lacks common sense and substance.
This film really does have some major issues that prevent it from being very good. First of all, THIS IS NOT A HORROR FILM. Do not go and watch this film expecting lots of jump- scares or violence, it just won't happen. Saying that, there are a few tense scenes but nothing compared to a genuine horror. The mystery in this film is what it's all about.
So basically, a load of kids have gone missing and nobody knows what's happened to them. If I'm honest, I think this film could've been excellent if there was an actual Tall Man, some deranged psychopath who kidnapped kids and murdered them or whatever. But they decided to go all preachy, and attempted to create some deep philosophical twist in the plot. They failed miserably. I won't completely ruin the storyline, but honestly, it just doesn't make sense and is completely hypocritical. The so-called good guys are just retarded morons who think they're doing good when in reality they're ruining lives and feeding the audience a load of idealistic "rich people are better parents" bullshit.
Sadly, the errors do not end here. The plot really is not feasible in reality. People would find out. Kids don't have amnesia. I'm pretty sure if my entire life changed suddenly when I was 5, I wouldn't be too happy about it and would definitely remember it. And yet, for all of TTM undeniable pitfalls it was actually entertaining. The unknown aspects kept me interested throughout, the acting was quite good, particularly from Jodelle Farland and Jessica Biel, and if you're not paying attention, this film could easily seem like it makes sense and is orally justified.
To sum up, this film is really a tale of what could have been. While I admire how the director decided against pumping the movie full of shocks and scares, this simply does not excuse the weak plot. Worth a watch if there's nothing else on I guess, but turn your brain off if you want to enjoy it.
Zeitgeist: Addendum (2008)
Insightful and un-contradictable.
I found this documentary truly excellent. I've seen all the other reviews on here saying how "eye-opening" it was. I agree to a large extent. It is very educational on how fundamentally flawed and ridiculous our monetary system is. Its hard to believe some of the stuff about perpetual debt but it does make sense, as shown by the worldwide economic collapse in recent years, and how nothing seems to have changed even after this. What this film does is explain how the current worldwide economy is unsustainable, unjust and horribly corrupt. I think people know there is poverty and suffering all over the planet, but assume that eventually there will be peace and happiness and abundance. Why? If we sit idly by and don't change anything, we will continue towards oblivion until all our resources are gone and everyone nukes the s*@!out of each other. War is such a futile exercise. This film made me realize that unless you actually get up of your couch and stop supporting the huge corporations, and stop believing the propaganda that is spoon fed to us, then millions will suffer in the third world for eternity and society as a whole will be held back immensely so the elite don't lose their status. Watch this.
Peep Show (2003)
The best mix of satire, angst and common sense I've ever witnessed .
This is my favourite TV show of all time, narrowly defeating Scrubs although the two are nothing alike. The contrast between the two characters is nothing amazing. The combination of a laid back, lazy yet instantly likable character living with a control freak is as old as sitcoms themselves. However, the clever part of this show is that the inner feelings of the characters can be heard during the episodes. Most of the comedy occurs in this other realm, and the honesty is equally as hilarious as it is insightful. You need a bit of a tough skin to enjoy this show if I'm honest, some of the situations are very real. Not for you if you think 90210 is compelling television. Mark and Jeremy have a strange and awkward dynamic, they get along but both seem to dislike each other. They have a deep- rooted friendship and won't leave each other, although they know they'd be better off. Despite this, they have plenty of good times and you feel as if each character becomes more like the other as time progresses. To sum up, Peep Show is absolutely brilliant, not very Hollywood or glamorous but the best TV never is. Watch it.
The Cable Guy (1996)
Terrible. Really terrible.
I am very disappointed that I stayed for the duration of this film. It really is awful, in my opinion. I like stupid humour, when it's done properly like Monty Python or Aeroplane. This was just poor. Jim Carrey plays a psychotic yet supposedly lovable former cable guy. The purpose of his character seems to be more focused on saying random "jokes" than advancing the plot in any way. He starts the film as a stalker and does not develop. Matthew Broderick is also annoyingly bad in places, though not nearly to the same extent. This film failed to make me actually laugh once, although I did manage a smirk a few times. If you like smart dumb comedies, this isn't for you. If you like laughing at anything said in a funny voice, prepare to be entertained.
