The Tomorrow War (2021)
A fun if predictable sci-fi flick
I actually enjoyed this more than I expected based on its score. I was thrilled throughout the movie - the action sequences were pretty well shot and the actors were doing a good job, especially Chris Pratt.
If you want to, you can find a ton of plot holes here. But if you simply enjoy the movie for what it is, it's quite fun.
And a great sign is that my girlfriend stayed awake :D She can fall asleep even in movie theaters and that makes this one obviously quite enthralling. And she was also on the edge of her seat the whole time.
Switch off too much critical thinking, grab some popcorn and have a good blockbuster night with it.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Stunning visuals, thin plot
The visuals are breathtaking. This is the type of movie that the 4DX experience is made for.
I loved getting sprinkled with water when the characters had that on screen and to feel the air brushing through my hair while they were flying... Truly mesmerizing!
I read some reviewers saying they were bored when watching the exploratory scenes where you get to see the creatures and the world of Pandora.
And I can see how that may be the case for some but I personally didn't feel the time as it passed by. 3 hours felt like a regular hour-and-a-half movie.
As for the plot - it was absurd, paper-thin and full of weird plot holes that seemed like a 16 year old intern with no experience in screenwriting has written it.
Brining back the original villain from the first movie? OK, not great, not terrible.
Having his motives be to simply hunt down and kill Jake Sully? Makes no sense without any background story to it. Who sent him? Why sent him on this specific mission? He finds out that it was Sully's mate who actually killed him but proceeds to want to kill mainly Sully?
They were mining some weird mineral that was the most expensive thing on Earth in the last movie but now they don't need that at all? As the general said "We're not a mining operation".
The bad guy is completely evil - he kills for the sake of showing his strength and burns down entire villages only to find Jake Sully.
And then proceeds to capture the main character's children but doesn't kill any of them? He wants to provoke Jake Sully but he keeps them all alive?
The humans are terrible, theirs soldiers that are trained and they kill everything in their wake but when the na'vi fight back, the humans are unable to kill a single one of them?
Jake Sully strangles the bad guy to death and leaves him for many minutes underwater after that but he is: 1. Alive after that? 2. Immediately conscious as soon as he is above the water? 3. Is able to get on his flying creature and take off right away?
Those are just a few of the absurd plot holes that plague this movie.
But, dare I say it, even with these absurdities, the movie is still a great watch in a movie theater (especially 4DX).
So, if you loved the first visit to Pandora, you're going to like this one. It's a decent movie that gets the visuals perfect and is entertaining throughout, so long as you don't think too much about why things are happening on the screen 🙂
Definitely a good movie that is worth your 3 hours!
Ticket to Paradise (2022)
Enjoyable
A movie to kill time.
Not exactly hilarious, not exactly boring.
Not exactly unexpected, not exactly entirely linear.
Characters are not exactly stale, not exactly growing either.
That's the defining theme here - everything is OK and nothing stands out.
George Clooney and Julia Roberts are great to see on screen and the rest of the cast also play well with what they're given.
Worth a watch once if you're bored and you're into romcoms.
Not exactly a movie worth going to the cinema for though. I'd wait and watch it on some streaming service. I went to see it in the movies because my girlfriend liked the ad for it and you know how it is :)
It's good for taking your girlfriend to the cinema though 🙂
Sing 2 (2021)
A joy for the family
If you go into this movie expecting deep emotions and unexpected plot twists - you've got to get your expectations straight :)
It's a family movie with a decent story, incredibly cute animals, outstanding visuals (it's rare that I vocally "Wow" while watching a movie and this one had me do that several times) and some good themes to talk about with the kids afterwards.
Are you going to let a stranger you don't know tell you you're not good enough and let that define you?
When you dream of something big, you're going to have to overcome obstacles. It'll be rare that you succeed from the first time.
And some more of the sort.
A very enjoyable movie that's definitely worth the screen time!
The Batman (2022)
OK
The set pieces were great, the music was brilliant, the atmosphere was completely immersive.
And yet I didn't care for the characters as I did when Christian Bale was playing the character.
Still, a good movie that was worth watching on the big screen.
Dan in Real Life (2007)
Heartfelt and funny
It is a wonderful movie.
Steve Carell is doing a wonderful job in not only making you laugh but also having really touching moments.
The movie is not a typical romantic comedy - if you walk in with expectations it will be, you are about to be disappointed.
But if you're interested in a clever, heartfelt and funny romantic comedy - you will be delighted to see this.
Free Guy (2021)
Ryan Reynolds at his best!
This movie was super fun!
But that was what I expected. Ryan Reynolds is truly marvelous - hilarious, looks kindhearted and is a comedic genius.
The part that I didn't expect was that the movie had me emotional several times. The connection between Ryan's character and his best friend as well as with his love interest is truly touching.
There is a chemistry between the across that flows from the screen and straight into your slightly teary eyes.
Definitely my favourite movie do far this year.
Klaus (2019)
A heartwarming story
Beautiful, if different for my girlfriend, art style.
A touching story.
Brilliant Santa Klaus backstory. Best one I've heard.
Emotional music.
And a lighthearted and so amazingly true message - A selfless act of kindness always sparks another.
I got emotional on more than one occasion.
A true masterpiece.
